chapter 13 - After Images

Outfits in the external link

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly", in the tunnels, Tara, Malia, Natalie, Liam, Angel, Chayton and Mason were looking at the rat king.

Liam: (voice over) "Previously on Worlds Colliding (Teen Wolf)"

Malia walked away.

"Where are you going?" Chayton asked.

"Paris," Malia answered.

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly, in the Sheriff's office, Stacie and Noah were talking.

"I will protect this town, and you will go to college, to the FBI, where Stiles already left for, soon," Noah told her.

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly", in the morgue, Scott and Melissa were talking.

"You have orientation tomorrow," Melissa told him.

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly", in Nicole's office, Ari, Lydia, Adriana, Macey and Nicole were talking.

"Ari and Lydia are going to college soon, and I am staying here until I learn how to control myself without hurting anyone," Adriana told them.

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly", in the loft, Scott and Tara were talking.

"You, actually giving it more thought to college than I thought you would," Scott told her.

Tara smiled, stepping closer. "I just realized that none of us can stay in Beacon Hills forever. It might be worth actually getting something to do with my life more than all of this."

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly", in the hospital, Angel, Amelia and Isaiah were talking.

"College is coming soon, and you two are the ones that are practically forcing me to go, even after I just got you back," Angel told them.

"Angel, you can go to college with Chayton and still have us and your Uncle Jordan," Isaiah told her. "You have to live your life."

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly", in the locker room, Natalie and Liam were talking, healing from the Hellhound fight.

"Natalie, we can do this without them soon," Liam told her.

Natalie shook her head, sighing painfully. "I don't know when I'll get used to thinking of them being gone. All of them."

From 6.12 "Raw Talent", on the lacrosse field, Adriana and Brett were talking.

"I'm sorry for hurting you," Adriana told him. "I never meant to. I never wanted to. Whenever you need help, I'll be there."

From 6.12 "Raw Talent", behind the school, Adriana was trying not to shift, growling in anger and frustration, leaning her head against the wall of the school, hitting the brick wall, breaking the bricks each time she hit with more strength, breaking a big piece of wall of the bricks, finally able to release enough of the anger and strength that she could get it out of her system for the time being, starting to calm down now that she took it out on something.

Adriana: (voice over from 6.12 Raw Talent) "But it's best if you stayed away from me while I'm like this."

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly", in the guidance office, Monroe looked at Natalie from across the desk. "I'm here to guide you."

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly", in the woods, Monroe shot Hawlyn in the head, killing him.

Monroe: (voice over from 6.11 Said the Spider to the Fly) "Not push."

From 6.12 "Raw Talent", in the parking lot, Monroe stabbed Brett in the chest with his broken lacrosse stick.

Monroe: (voice over from 6.11 Said the Spider to the Fly) "Not prod."

From 6.11 "Said the Spider to the Fly", in the guidance office, Monroe looked at Natalie from across the desk. "Guide."

From 6.12 "Raw Talent", in the woods, Brett was about to slash into Monroe when an arrow was shot into his chest. He let Monroe go, running away.

Monroe looked around for the person who had saved her life. "Who are you?"

Gerard stepped out of the shadows with his crossbow. "Someone who recognizes raw talent when he sees it."

Same Night - Day One

Night - Woods

Brett was running through the woods of Beacon Hills, with the hunter's arrow still sticking out of his chest. He knew that he was being pursued by both Monroe and Gerard. He stopped to catch his breath, leaning against a tree weakly, taking out his phone desperately to call for help, but he didn't have service while in the middle of the woods, putting it away. He attempted to pull the arrow from his chest, but realized he couldn't, he turned toward the tree, bracing himself for severe pain, pressing him up against the tree to drive the arrow further into him and out his back, having to ram his chest into the tree twice to do so. He fell to his knees in agony, breathing heavily, and with more of the arrow protruding out of his back, he was able to reach around, grab it, and rip it from his body. He was breathing heavily in fear and pain, bracing himself to fight back.

Elsewhere

Gerard and Monroe were tracking Brett.

Monroe was getting impatient with how slow Gerard was moving. "He's gaining too much ground on us. We should be moving faster."

"You're talking like an amateur," Gerard told her.

"An amateur that killed a Hellhound," Monroe told him.

"Who was wounded and bleeding," Gerard replied.

"And I took out a Werewolf," Monroe told him.

"Also injured and alone," Gerard told her. "Let's not mistake luck for skill. The longer we wait, the weaker he will be."

"And the more time he'll have to find help," Monroe told him.

Gerard smirked. "'The greatest victory is that which requires no battle'."

Monroe nodded sarcastically. "Sun Tzu. Got it. Can we at least keep moving?" They continued to walk along, hearing a cellphone start to ring. "Did you hear that? It's him."

They set off to follow the sound, finding the phone lying on the ground, still ringing.

Brett was in a tree, throwing Gerard's arrow back at Monroe, but the old man pulled the new hunter out of the way just in time, making it hit a tree instead. Brett smirked despite how strung out he looked.

Monroe and Gerard caught sight of him, starting to fire with Monroe's rifle and Gerard's crossbow.

Brett dodged the shots, running away into the night.

Dunbar House - Liam's Room

Natalie and Liam were sitting on the bed, studying for the test the next morning that they mentioned last chapter.

"Liam, Macey's going to check out the body," Natalie explained. "She said that she'll call if she finds anything strange or weird about it."

"Strange, other than the fact that we were right in the same room with it, and we couldn't smell it or the blood?" Liam asked.

"Or that it made both of us feel terrified," Natalie added.

"Nattie, why do you still seem scared?" Liam asked. "Natalie, what's wrong?"

Natalie took a deep, nervous breath, trying to appear fine. "I can't get the body out of my head."

Liam nodded in understanding. "Yeah, me, too."

Natalie shook her head. "No, Liam, I'm--I mean, I--I literally can't get it out of my head. You know what after images are, Liam?"

"Natalie, you mean, like, when you look at a light bulb, and when you look away, you still kind of see it?" Liam asked.

"Yeah," Natalie answered. "Liam, after so much loss, and being forced to see it over and over again, I was once diagnosed with a more extreme version called palinopsia. It literally means 'seeing again'. I mean, the image just stays with you, and you see it again, and again. I only had this when it came to Boyd, Erica, Allison, Camden. My mom and dad. Liam, now I'm seeing it with the body, too."

Liam looked at Natalie in concern and worry. "Nattie, where are you seeing the body?"

Natalie looked past Liam toward an image of the body behind him. "Everywhere."

Ari, Adriana and Macey's House - Outside

Ari, Adriana and Lydia were about to get into a car.

"We're not saying that you're not struggling, Adriana," Lydia told her. "You're obviously struggling. We're just saying that you're doing better than you think, Adri."

Adriana scoffed.

"Don't doubt yourself, Adriana," Ari told her. "Adri, we'll get through this."

"Whatever you say, Ari," Adriana told her. They turned toward the car, seeing Lori walking closer. "Lori? Are you okay?"

Lori walked closer with Brett's broken, bloodied lacrosse stick to show them. "I found this. It's Brett's, and he's missing, and I heard gunshots."

"How do you know this is his blood?" Ari asked.

"Because he's my brother," Lori answered. "It's mine, too. Adriana, I heard you two talking earlier. I know that you're fighting, but I also know that you never wanted to hurt him, and that you've always wanted to protect him. So, please, help me save him."

Ari, Adriana and Lydia exchanged a look of worry.

Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital - Morgue

Macey bolted the doors to the hospital morgue, pulling out the drawer containing the bloody lump of the body that Liam and Natalie had found and were just talking about, intending to take a tissue sample. She hesitated, seeming to feel a small amount of fear, sighing, clicking her tongue. "Get it together, Macey."

Macey pulled back the sheet covering the body, gasping, afraid, quickly covering it back up. Managing her fear but still breathing heavily, she pulled the sheet back once more, just not as much as the first time. She retrieved a scalpel, reaching out to cut away a piece of flesh. As the tool came close to the body, all the lights in the room flickered. She reached forward again, almost making contact with the blade, and the lights went out completely. Macey managed to get her phone light on. It appeared that the body was no longer lying in the drawer. Macey looked around with the phone's light, appearing to see all of the bodies in the room beginning to move in hallucination, fear taking her as she ran for the exit.

Hallway

Macey burst out of the morgue doors in terror, turning to look back into the room in confusion, breathing heavily, backing away to lean against the wall, trying to calm herself down.

Beacon Hills High School - Outside

Stacie, Malia, Angel and Chayton were meeting up outside the school.

"Angel, Chayton, why did you tell us to meet here?" Malia asked.

"Brett's missing," Angel answered.

Stacie was trying to be optimistic and cheerful. "'Missing', as in no one can find him and they're really worried?"

"No, Stacie, 'missing', as in his sister Lori found blood all over his lacrosse stick," Chayton answered.

Malia sighed, making a face. "Why's our missing always involve blood?"

"Uh, because it's Beacon Hills," Stacie answered with her usual level of sarcasm and sass.

"Come on, we're meeting with Mason and Cory," Angel told them. "We're gonna find him."

¤•¤°¤•¤

Inside - Classroom

Stacie, Malia, Angel, Chayton, Mason and Cory were gathered as Angel was trying to initiate a premonition, focusing on the blue flame of a Bunsen burner, trying to concentrate, with a pen and piece of paper in front of her.

Mason was looking around nervously.

"You all right?" Cory asked.

"Yeah, why?" Mason asked.

"Just checking," Cory answered.

"No, it's okay," Mason told him.

"Quiet, please," Stacie told them. "Anyone with half a brain would know that Valkyrie premonitions would work better if the Valkyrie, Angel, could focus."

Cory and Mason nodded in agreement. "Sorry, Stacie."

"Thank you, Stacie," Angel told her.

Stacie smiled. "You're welcome, Angel."

Angel narrowed her eyes at Mason and Cory, turning her attention back to the flame.

"Chayton, has Angel ever tried this before?" Malia asked.

Chayton kept his voice low as to not distract Angel. "Initiating a premonition? A few times? They usually find her."

"How will it help us find him?" Malia asked.

"I don't know," Stacie told them quietly. "But if Brett's dead, I think both Angel and Lydia would already know."

Cory spoke louder than they were. "Do you think it's working?"

"It might if you stop talking," Angel told them.

Cory couldn't help but reach out for the Newton's cradle sitting on the lab station, plucking at one of the steel balls. Stacie and Chayton realized what he was doing just a second too late to stop it, while Mason and Malia didn't try to stop it. There was a loud click from the kinetic energy toy, distracting Angel again. Stacie, Angel, Chayton and Malia gave Mason and Cory an annoyed look.

Mason and Cory spoke at the same time again. "Sorry."

Angel began to hear something, a school bell ringing, and footsteps in the hall. The Bunsen burner flame blew out. Angel began to write on the paper, looking up creepily, looking like she was possessed.

Chayton looked concerned. "Angel? Angel."

Angel couldn't hear them while in the premonition, writing.

Woods

Scott, Tara, Ari, Adriana, Lydia, Liam, Natalie and Lori were searching the woods for Brett.

Lydia found the arrow in the tree, coated in blood. "Here." She picked up Brett's phone from the ground, handing it to Adriana. "I think he set a trap."

"He's fighting back," Scott told them.

"And now we know he's alive," Natalie told them.

Lori took the arrow out of the tree. "Natalie, he's still hurt. We need to find him. He needs to know we're here."

Lori turned to howl.

Tara stopped her. "You want the hunter to know we're here, too?"

"Tara, he's new," Liam told her. "We can take him."

"What if Brett howls back?" Ari asked. "He'll lead the hunter right to him."

"Ari, we could find him first," Scott told her. "There's no human that can track sounds faster than we can. And we've got the advantage. We've done this before. We know what we're doing, Ari."

"How come I can't catch his scent?" Adriana asked.

"He's masking it," Lori answered.

"Can someone tell him not to?" Adriana asked.

Natalie followed the tracks on the ground. "He went this way."

They started to follow the trail.

"His trap didn't work," Lydia told them.

"Tara, what if this hunter is not such an amateur?" Ari asked.

"Or maybe he's learning, Ari," Tara told her.

No one liked the sound of that.

Beacon Hills High School - Classroom

Angel was now out of her trance, showing Stacie, Chayton, Malia, Mason and Cory that she had written a lot of stuff in various forms.

"Does anyone speak Chinese?" Malia asked.

"My phone does," Stacie answered, using her phone to take a picture of the piece of paper and translate it.

Chayton read from another piece of the paper. "Lux-V?"

"No, it's a Roman number, '68'," Mason told them.

"68," Stacie repeated, showing them her phone. "That's what the Chinese says, too."

Malia read from the paper. "ER."

"ER?" Chayton repeated. "ER, what?"

Angel turned to the element property table in realization. "Erbium. The atomic number for Erbium is 68."

"Angel, what if this whole thing just says '68'?" Chayton asked.

"68 what, Chayton?" Cory asked.

"I have no idea," Chayton told them. "Angel?"

Angel shook her head, confused. "Chayton, I have no clue."

"Okay, so what do we try next?" Stacie asked.

"I'm going back to where my last premonition was," Angel answered. She gave Mason and Cory a look. "And you're not coming."

"Why do Stacie, Chayton and Malia get to go?" Mason asked.

"Because Stacie, Chayton and Malia are not constantly distracting me with annoying tendencies," Angel answered.

Stacie gave Mason and Cory a smug 'I told you so' look.

Malia smiled smugly. "At least Angel likes us."

Chayton smirked in amusement. "Come on."

Mason and Cory looked sheepish and awkward but knew they were right.

Angel, Stacie, Chayton and Malia stood, walking out of the room.

¤•¤°¤•¤

Woods

Brett was lying down a false trail of blood and tracks to throw the hunters off his trail, seeming to bleeding black now due to the poison in Gerard's arrow. He tied up the wounds so he would not leave any more blood behind, not healing. He saw a squarish rock, kneeling next to it, picking the rock up, getting an idea.

Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital - Hallway

Macey had called Chris to the hospital for help.

"Macey, why did you call me here?" Chris asked.

Macey held a scalpel toward him. "I need a tissue sample from a body. I was hoping you would go in there and get it for me."

Chris was confused and a little amused. "It's a dead body, right?"

"Mostly," Macey answered.

"Mostly?" Chris repeated.

"Maybe you should just go see for yourself," Macey told him.

Chris sighed, nodding in agreement, turning to the morgue, walking inside.

¤•¤°¤•¤

Morgue

Just inside the morgue, Chris began to feel something was off. He looked back toward Macey through the window in the door. Macey nodded. Chris walked closer to the body, becoming overwhelmed with the same scared feeling that Natalie, Liam and Macey had felt. He was shaking and sweating by the time he reached the drawer with the bloody lump, removing his coat, wiping his brow. He reached forward with the blade.

The plastic wrapping on another table began to rustle as the corpse inside appeared to breathe, terrifying Chris.

¤•¤°¤•¤

Hallway

Chris quickly rejoined Macey in the hallway, both of them shaking and still scared.

"That's not just a dead body," Chris told her.

Macey nodded in agreement. "You felt it, too, didn't you?"

"Yeah," Chris answered.

"Fear?" Macey asked.

Chris nodded. "Terror."

¤•¤°¤•¤

Woods

Gerard and Monroe were still tracking Brett through the woods.

Monroe turned to face Gerard in confusion. "The trail ends."

"The trail ends when you've found him," Gerard told her. "Remember what I told you?"

Monroe nodded. "Look for signature prints, look for heel marks."

"And why the heel marks?" Gerard asked.

"Because the heel comes down first," Monroe answered. "It bears all the weight."

"So what do you see?" Gerard asked.

"No prints, nothing," Monroe answered.

"And that tells you what?" Gerard asked.

Monroe realized where he was going with this. "It's a misdirect."

Gerard smirked slightly in approval. "Good. And what does that tell us about our young wolf?"

"He feels us closing in on him," Monroe answered. "He wants to escape the pressure."

"Don't ask yourself what a teenager would do," Gerard told her. "Ask yourself what an animal would do."

"An animal would run and hide," Monroe answered.

"And where do wounded animals go to hide?" Gerard asked, walking toward a manhole in the ground nearby them in the woods, opening it to lead them to the tunnels. "They go underground."

Beacon Hills High School - Hallway

Walking down the hallway, Malia, Stacie, Chayton and Angel were counting their paces. "65. 66. 67. 68."

They reached a locker with a red combination lock, looking up at the number to see it was Stiles' locker. Malia and Stacie exchanged a small smile.

Stacie looked up at the locker number, realizing something. "Guys, all the lockers have numbers."

"So, what if it means locker 68?" Angel finished.

They hurriedly walked down the hallway to find locker 68. Chayton broke the lock off the locker, opening it, looking inside to find it empty. He exchanged a look with Malia, Stacie and Angel, disappointed, sighing. He closed the locker so they could keep looking for and find the answer.

¤•¤°¤•¤

Library

Nolan jerked awake at one of the desks on the upper floor of the library. He looked down, seeing Cory and Mason trying to figure out what significance the number 68 might have held.

Aaron walked closer to join Nolan on the balcony, looking down at Cory and Mason. "I've seen it, too."

"What are you talking about?" Nolan asked nervously.

Aaron nodded to Cory. "How he shows up out of nowhere. Don't pretend you haven't noticed."

"I'm not sure what I've seen," Nolan told him, anxious.

"Do you wanna be sure?" Aaron asked. "If you really wanna know, I know a way."

Woods

Scott, Tara, Ari, Adriana, Lydia, Natalie, Liam and Lori were still looking, losing the trail.

"His trail's gone," Ari told them.

"Uh, maybe he just stopped bleeding," Scott told them.

"I think we should split up into groups of four," Liam told them. "Scott, Tara, Natalie and I'll go that way, and Ari, Adriana, Lydia and Lori can go that way."

"Or maybe we all go in different directions?" Lori asked.

"We should stick together," Lydia told them.

"We have the advantage," Natalie told them. "It's eight against one."

"Not if we split up," Tara told them.

"Tara, we've been doing this the past three months without your help," Liam told her. "I think we can make a decision."

"Well, if you're deciding to do something stupid and die, then go ahead," Adriana told them. "I'll do whatever it takes to save Brett, but I'm not gonna do something that might get one of us or him killed."

"It's one hunter," Liam told them. "One amateur who doesn't know what they're doing."

"Liam, I've been doing this a lot longer than you have," Tara told him. "And I've dealt with hunters my entire life. It's not smart to underestimate them. At all."

Adriana turned away, frustrated and trying to stay calm.

Ari and Lydia walked closer to calm Adriana down. They were obviously the only reasons why Adriana was not getting angry or losing control right now.

"Adri?" Lydia asked. "Adriana, you okay?"

Adriana swallowed. "I'm fine."

"It's gonna be okay, Adri," Ari told her.

Natalie nodded in agreement. "Adri, we're gonna find him."

Scott was looking at the tracks. "The hunter. He's covering his tracks."

"There's another," Natalie told them.

"Two of them?" Lydia asked.

"Maybe more," Ari answered.

"Tara, how many hunters have you seen out here before?" Lori asked.

"A lot," Tara answered.

Adriana looked at Natalie, Liam and Lori sarcastically, trying to stay in control and normal by using humor like usual. "Still wanna split up?"

"We can deal with it," Liam told them. "Right, Natalie?"

Natalie sighed. "We just need to find Brett's trail."

Lori looked away to a set of rocks set up nearby. "No, we don't. Rock balancing. Satomi taught us. It's him, and I know where he's going."

Tunnels

The group walked through the tunnels underground, finding more blood.

Ari knelt next to the blood. "He's been poisoned."

"That's why he's not healing," Scott told them.

Ari stood.

"What if he only has a few hours to live?" Adriana asked worriedly.

"Well, if we howl, we can find him," Liam told them.

"That's too risky," Tara told them.

"Who cares about the risk?" Lori asked worriedly. "He could be dying."

"Lydia, what can you tell us about Brett right now?" Natalie asked.

"He's not dead, Natalie," Lydia answered. "He's still moving, but... he's getting close."

"We just need time to think," Scott told them.

"I need him to know that I'm here, that I'm coming for him," Lori told them. "He has to know we're here."

Lori turned to howl.

"Lori, wait," Tara told her.

Lori howled so Brett would know they were looking for him.

Elsewhere

Brett was lying across a pipe high above the tunnel floor. He heard the howl from his sister, struggling to lift his head.

Just below, Monroe and Gerard were tracking him, turning to look behind them as they heard Lori's howl.

"How did he get behind us?" Monroe asked.

"He didn't," Gerard answered. "That wasn't Brett. That was a Werewolf making a mistake."

Above them, a single drop of black blood started to drip from Brett toward them. He managed to catch it before it fell too far and alerted the hunters below, staying as quiet and still as possible.

"His friends are coming for him?" Monroe asked.

"It's safe to assume they're coming for us," Gerard answered, starting to lead Monroe back down the way they came.

"Why are we going back?" Monroe asked. "What if there's a pack?"

"Oh, there is," Gerard told her. "We can count on it."

"Wait, how many are we talking about?" Monroe asked.

"That's not the right question," Gerard told her. "You're thinking from a place of fear."

"I'm thinking logically and mathematically," Monroe replied. "Two of us against too many of them."

"Try thinking strategically," Gerard told her. "That's Scott McCall and Arielle Martin's Achilles' heel. Like most teenagers, they think with their hearts. They all do."

"So what's our strategy?" Monroe asked.

Gerard smirked. "Right now? Divide and conquer."

Monroe and Gerard walked away. Brett watched them go, worried about what it would mean for whoever came for him.

Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital - Morgue

Chris held his hand gun pointed at the head of the faceless bloody lump.

Macey was once again trying to get a tissue sample, despite the fact that both of them were still terrified. "Okay. There's a perfectly logical explanation for this, but if it moves..."

"I'll empty a clip into it," Chris assured.

Macey shuddered, breathing heavily, gasping, backing away. "Sorry."

"Macey, talk," Chris told her.

"What?" Macey asked.

Chris kept his eyes on the body. "You said there's a logical explanation. Tell me what it is."

"You mean to distract myself?" Macey asked.

"And me," Chris answered.

Macey nodded, starting to ramble off explanations to distract both of them while she struggled to push through the fear. "Okay. Okay, okay. Okay, sure. It could be a toxin... or gases, chemicals released by the body."

"This thing?" Chris asked.

"Yeah," Macey answered. "Carbogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen gas mixed, can, uh, make your brain think that you're suffocating, and then your body reacts with intense anxiety and fear."

Macey got closer to the body, preparing to cut off the piece of flesh, though she was still scared.

"Macey, what else?" Chris asked.

"Any noxious smells can induce fear," Macey answered. "Or even infrasounds, sounds below 20 hertz."

The talking was not helping; their fear was reaching a peak, both shaking.

"Just do it," Chris told her.

Macey nodded in agreement, moving the blade closer to cut off the piece of flesh, looking around when the lights flickered around them. "Yeah."

"Macey, now," Chris told her. "Macey."

Macey slit off a thumb-sized sliver into a Petri dish. "I got it."

Chris slammed the drawer closed, trying to catch his breath.

Tunnels

The group continued to run through the woods, following Lydia's sense of death to lead them to where Brett could have been.

"Why didn't he answer?" Adriana asked.

"Maybe he didn't hear us," Natalie told them.

"Maybe he can't," Lydia told them.

Scott saw that Lori was about to trip a tripwire near the floor. "Lori, no!"

Just as Lori tripped the wire, Scott pulled her back behind him to safety, receiving the trap himself, in the form of a spiked wooden weapon in the stomach.

¤•¤°¤•¤

¤•¤°¤•¤

Ari and Adriana were giving Scott power to help ease his pain, while Tara and Natalie were taking his pain. Lydia, Lori and Liam were struggling to remove the weapon from his stomach. They set him on the floor.

"They knew we were coming," Scott told them.

"Don't talk, just heal, and let us figure this out," Tara told him.

"Tara was right, they've been a step ahead of us the whole time," Ari told them.

"I'm sorry, but I can't wait around," Lori told them. "We have to go."

"We still have the numbers, seven to two," Liam told them. "We're faster, and stronger."

"They're smarter," Lydia told them.

"I don't care who's smarter, or faster, or whatever," Lori told them. "My brother's going to die."

"Something's not right," Ari told them. "The arrow, the tripwire, the poison. These aren't amateurs."

"But they've never fought us before," Liam told them.

"And you've never fought hunters before, Liam," Natalie told him.

"Natalie, we need to stick together," Lydia told her.

"I need to go," Lori told them.

"No, you're not going alone," Natalie told her. "Adriana, Ari, Liam, Lydia and I'll go with you."

"Natalie, we don't know who they are, or what they're capable of," Adriana told her.

"I know who we are," Natalie told them. "We never give up, especially when it's someone innocent, when it's someone alone, when it's one of our friends."

They all knew Natalie was right.

"Okay, Nattie's right, let's go, go," Ari told them. "Let's go."

Ari, Lydia, Adriana, Natalie, Liam and Lori ran off.

Tara stayed kneeling next to Scott worriedly.

"Go, Tara, go with them," Scott told her. "I just need a minute. Tara, go."

Tara shook her head. "You just need to shut up. If there's more than two out here, I'm not leaving you alone when you're hurt and healing and possibly poisoned because they could kill you, too. They'll have a harder time doing that with me here."

Scott chuckled softly, touched. "Tara, we'll be fine. I'll be fine... Tara."

Tara sighed, shaking her head. "I'm not taking any chances."

Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital - Morgue

Chris and Macey were more calm now as they were about to run tests on the piece of flesh from the body. They had put the tissue sample into a test tube, and the test tube into a centrifuge, watching as it stopped spinning.

"I think the scary part's over," Macey told him. "This is just the boring science part."

Chris shook his head. "I'm not gonna leave you alone with that thing."

Macey smiled a small smile. "I bet you wanna know what scared the hell out of you."

Chris shrugged. "I'm curious."

"Let me guess, not very much," Macey told him.

Chris smiled a little. "Very little." They both smiled small smiles, chuckling. Macey placed the sample on a slide, the slide under a microscope to see what she could find, frowning in confusion. "Macey, what is it?"

"It's nothing," Macey answered. "No DNA, no cell structure. There is nothing here."

"How is that possible, Macey?" Chris asked.

"It's not," Macey answered.

They both looked toward the drawer with the body anxiously, worriedly.

Tunnels

Lydia was leading the way for Ari, Adriana, Natalie, Liam and Lori because of her Banshee abilities. "I can feel him. It's just... it's hard to find him. Normally I wind up at places that I don't remember going. Actively trying to find someone dying... I haven't really had much experience with."

"Well, which way?" Liam asked. "There's gotta be something."

Adriana looked at Lori. "Did he leave anything for you to find, like a signal, or more rocks?"

"I don't see anything," Natalie told them. "I don't hear anything."

"We'll find something," Ari told them, reassuring both Lori and Adriana, because they were both not in the best emotional state. "He's gonna be okay."

Adriana was losing patience and trying to stay calm, turning away. "How do you know?"

Adriana couldn't control it when she lashed out and punched the wall in front of her.

Ari and Lydia rubbed Adriana's shoulders to calm her down. "Adri..."

"'Cause he's strong," Liam answered. "He's really strong. He's knocked me down on the lacrosse field more than once. Now, when I see him coming,  I do everything I can to get the hell out of the way."

Lori smiled slightly. "Brett actually started playing lacrosse for me."

"For you?" Ari repeated.

"I didn't have any friends at my old school," Lori explained. "Devenford Prep needed lacrosse players, and Brett practiced all summer. And he got a scholarship and told them that they had to take me if they wanted him."

Lydia rubbed both Lori and Adriana's arms reassuringly, comfortingly. "Hey, we're gonna find him."

Lori, Liam, Adriana, Ari and Natalie caught a scent.

"Do you smell that?" Liam asked.

"What?" Lydia asked. "Smell what?"

"It smells like something's rotting," Natalie told them.

"Nattie, I think it's poison," Ari told her.

Adriana was relieved to find a new lead. "That's how we'll find him."

This time it was the wolves leading Lydia down the tunnel to find Brett by following the scent.

Alcove

Gerard and Monroe were set up in an alcove in the tunnels, setting up a sniper rifle.

Monroe was tired of waiting. "It's been too long."

"Don't worry, they'll have to come this way," Gerard told her.

"How do you know?" Monroe asked.

Gerard chuckled. "Well, I wouldn't be down here if I didn't know exactly where I was."

As Monroe watched through the rifle's scope, Ari, Adriana, Natalie, Liam, Lori and Lydia ran by. Gerard pushed the gun, interrupting her shot.

"Why did you let them go?" Monroe asked in annoyance.

"Because this isn't about killing just one Werewolf," Gerard answered.

Monroe looked at him in confusion.

Beacon Hills High School - Library

Mason and Cory were still sitting at their table, trying to figure out what Angel's premonition meant.

"68 miles, 68 degrees, Route 68?" Mason asked.

"Angel, Stacie, Malia or Chayton will call us when they have something," Cory told him.

"Yeah, I just wish I could be there," Mason told him. "You know, help them--"

"Distract them?" Cory countered.

Mason nodded in agreement. "Yeah, good point."

Nolan arrived at their table, sitting down with his books.

"Hey, Nolan," Cory told him. "Studying for bio test?"

Nolan nodded. "Trying, yeah. Um, trying to understand how organisms evolve and change. Like, how a fish can turn into an alligator."

"Uh, alligators aren't fish," Mason told him. "Um, they're reptiles. They--they hatch from fertilized eggs..."

"And isn't the test on DNA versus RNA?" Cory asked.

"Do you think DNA changes?" Nolan asked.

"If it's damaged, yeah," Mason answered. "A change in DNA could cause cancer."

"So organisms can change," Nolan told them. "Organisms change." He chuckled nervously, creepily. "They can change right in front of your eyes."

"I don't think this is on the test," Cory told him.

"I wonder if organisms can change, and then change back," Nolan told them. "Like, they can be two things at once."

Mason nodded. "Uh, parrotfish are protogynous hermaphrodites, both male and female. Um, hawkfish change and change back. As well as earthworms, of course, but..."

Cory looked at Nolan, shaking his head. "That's definitely not on the test, or any high school test."

"I wonder if any of us have changed," Nolan told them. "And if we did, would there be any way to tell?"

"Like a DNA test?" Mason asked.

"I was thinking a different type of test," Nolan told them.

Cory was looking at Mason in confusion because Nolan's behavior. Nolan took the advantage to stab him in the hand with his pen brutally, making blood rush out and cover his hand.

Everyone in the library was looking. Mason and Cory stood in shock.

Cory looked at Nolan incredulously. "Ow! What the hell is wrong with you?"

Nolan grabbed Cory's hand, making sure it was completely healed when he showed it to his classmates. "Look at him! Look!"

Cory pulled his hand away from Nolan.

Nolan grabbed his stuff, starting to walk away.

Mason looked around the library at the students. "Wait, he's fine. It's just a scratch."

Aaron watched from the second floor, smiling.

Nolan stopped at the door to the library, looking at his bloody pen.

Hallway

Stacie, Malia, Angel and Chayton were walking down the hallway. Nolan was coming from the opposite direction, bumping into Chayton.

"Sorry," Chayton told him. Nolan walked past them. Chayton looked back to see his lacrosse hoodie had the number 68 on his back. "Hey, 68." The four of them ran up to Nolan. "Hey, hey."

Stacie grabbed Nolan's wrists to check his heartbeat through the veins to see if he was lying or not. "Do you know anything about Brett?"

"Who?" Nolan asked.

"Brett Talbot," Malia told him. "Lacrosse player. What happened to him?"

"I don't know any Brett," Nolan told them. Stacie let him go. Angel, Chayton and Malia were listening to his heartbeat. Nolan looked at them in realization. "You're with them, aren't you?"

"With who?" Stacie asked.

Nolan didn't answer, running down the hallway, leaving the school, leaving the four of them confused.

Angel looked at them in confusion. "Okay, what the hell is up with that creepy kid?"

Chayton shook his head. "I have no idea."

Tunnels

Scott and Tara were still on the floor next to the tripwire.

"How did we miss that?" Scott asked.

"We underestimated them, when I told you guys not to," Tara answered.

"But, how did they rig a trap that big with us down here in the tunnels?" Scott asked.

Tara noticed rust on the trap of the tripwire, shaking her head. "They didn't. They rigged it a long time ago."

"Tara, we've been through these tunnels a hundred times," Scott told her.

"And whoever this hunter is, he's been through them a hundred more," Tara told him. "And he knew we were here, he was waiting for us, tracking us. He was prepared and we weren't."

Scott groaned in pain. "There aren't a lot of people who spend time in these tunnels."

Tara gave Scott a look, because she already knew who they were dealing with. "Who was the last hunter you saw down here?"

"Argent..." Scott trailed off, looking at Tara in realization as he realized where she was going with this. "And Gerard."

"The trap wasn't lethal," Tara told him.

Scott shook his head in agreement. "It slowed us down."

"And split us up," Tara added.

"He's planning something else, another trap," Scott told her.

"And Ari, Adriana, Lydia, Natalie, Liam and Lori are walking right into it," Tara told him.

Tara helped Scott up to his feet, leading him down the tunnels so they could try to get to them and Brett in time.

Elsewhere

Ari, Lydia, Natalie, Adriana, Liam and Lori were running through the tunnels in search for Brett, following Lydia's sense of Banshee prediction with the help of the scent of poison in the air.

"They all look the same," Lori told them. "Are you sure we're going the right way?"

"Positive," Ari answered. "I've gotten lost down here before, more than once. Just follow us."

"I hate that scent," Liam told them.

"Wait," Natalie told them. "I hear something. It sounds like..."

"Sounds like what, Natalie?" Lydia asked.

"A heartbeat," Adriana answered. They ran in the direction of the scent and sound, finally finding Brett sitting weakly on the floor, black blood bleeding from his eyes, nose, ears and mouth, running instantly to his side. Lori and Adriana knelt next to him worriedly in relief. "Brett."

Brett was barely conscious, looking at Lori. "You found the rocks."

Lori smiled in relief. "Yeah, I found the rocks."

Brett breathed heavily in pain. "Ari. Adriana. Natalie. Liam."

"Hey, we're gonna get you out of here," Adriana told him.

Adriana and Lori helped Brett stand up.

"You're dumbasses for doing this," Brett told them.

"Oh, is that your way of thanking us?" Liam asked sarcastically.

"No, that's my way of calling you dumbasses," Brett answered. "But thanks."

Brett and Adriana managed small smiles.

Ari and Natalie heard something behind them, turning around. A bright white light turned on, momentarily blinding all of them. Fog entered the tunnels.

"They're coming," Natalie told them.

"Okay, Lydia, take them and go," Ari told her. An emitter started to pulse, surprising and hurting the Werewolves, making them hold their ears in pain. Ari looked at Lydia, gesturing for her to help Lori get Brett out of there. "Go, go!"

Lori and Lydia each took an arm of Brett's to wrap around their shoulders, helping him get away.

Liam, Natalie, Adriana and Ari shifted to face whoever was there. Liam and Natalie let their eyes glow gold; Adriana let her eyes glow completely purple; Ari let her eyes glow red. They ran into the fog, looking around. Natalie saw the emitter, taking it out of the wall, breaking it to make the sound stop, tossing it down.

"Ari, there's nobody here," Liam told her. "Natalie? Adriana?"

Adriana realized it was just a distraction to split them up. "Lydia, Lori and Brett."

They ran quickly down the tunnels after Lydia, Lori and Brett to try and get to them.

Elsewhere

Gerard and Monroe were walking down the tunnels.

"Seems like we're letting a lot of opportunities pass us by," Monroe told him.

"I know we only just met, but I'm gonna have to ask you to trust me a little longer," Gerard told her.

"I'm generally not a very trusting person," Monroe told him.

"That's why you are gonna be good at this," Gerard told her.

"Good at what?" Monroe asked. "I thought we're trying to hunt down a Werewolf."

"Anyone can learn to hunt one Werewolf," Gerard told her. "We are building an army."

"An army?" Monroe repeated.

Gerard nodded. "To hunt them all."

Elsewhere

Tara was still helping Scott through the tunnels. While being poisoned and not healing, Scott couldn't make it much further, collapsing to the floor of the tunnel.

Tara knelt next to Scott worriedly. "I'm sorry. Let me try again."

Tara was trying to take Scott's pain, but the poison was making it difficult.

"No, no, no, Tara, it's just not working," Scott told her. "I don't think that we should waste any more time."

"Quiet," Tara told him.

"Tara, why isn't it working?" Scott asked. "How come you can't take the pain?"

"Because the poison is making it hard, but not impossible," Tara answered.

Scott was nearly unconscious. "It's okay, Tara."

"No, it's not okay," Tara told him. "None of this is okay. I've lost a lot of people in my life, Scott, and I'm not gonna lose you again."

Scott managed a small smile. "You're not... gonna lose me... Tara."

Scott was starting to fall asleep.

Tara tried to wake him up. "No, no, no, no, no, no. Don't pass out. You're not supposed to pass out. Scott, wake up. Scott?"

Tara was at a loss for options, worried and concerned and anxious about his well-being, placing a hand on Scott's cheek, leaning her head against his, kissing him slowly and softly for a long moment to wake him up, taking his pain through both her hand and lips, making the pain trail through her bloodstream, up her cheeks and arm in black veins.

Scott woke, looking at Tara in relief. "Tara. What happened?"

"It worked," Tara answered in relief, sighing heavily. "Come on."

Tara helped Scott up, helping him down the tunnels.

Ari, Adriana and Macey's House - Living Room

Chris had brought Macey home. Macey was holding her stun baton.

Chris showed Macey his gun. "Macey, you let me know if you wanna upgrade to something with a little more kick."

"Oh, I--I think this is good enough for now," Macey told him. "I'm pretty good with a stun baton, if you haven't noticed."

Chris chuckled, nodding. "I've noticed, Macey. Taking down a Chimera and Alpha with one."

Macey smiled. "But I might take you up on the offer of learning how to use a gun soon, if I think that I need it. Let me know if you remember anything about your family history that deals with any of the bizarreness that we've been dealing with."

"Bodies with no DNA?" Chris asked.

"Or bodies with no DNA that somehow make you feel terrified," Macey answered.

"I don't know if the body's actually causing the fear," Chris explained. "Maybe it's just amplifying it?"

Macey nodded in agreement. "You still feel it, don't you?"

"Yeah, it's like something crawling on the back of my neck," Chris answered.

"Me, too," Macey told him.

They looked at each other for a moment, comforted now, calm, smiling small smiles.

"I should go," Chris told her.

"You don't have to go," Macey told him.

They looked at each other for a moment, kissing slowly and softly.

Beacon Hills High School - Outside

Stacie, Angel, Chayton, Malia, Mason and Cory were standing outside, talking.

"It was about Nolan," Malia told them. "Angel's whole premonition was about him."

"Would've been nice to know before he attacked me," Cory told them.

"No, he wasn't trying to hurt you," Stacie told him. "He was trying to expose you. That was a test."

"Well, you definitely failed," Mason told him. He looked at Stacie, Angel, Chayton and Malia to explain what had happened. "It was a geyser, half the library staring." He looked at Cory. "You didn't even have a scratch."

"Yeah, I remember, because it was, like, five minutes ago," Cory told them. "Why would Nolan do that?"

"He afraid," Chayton answered.

"Of Cory?" Malia asked.

"Of all of you," Stacie answered. "The supernaturals."

Chayton sighed. "Angel, I thought your parents' premonition was about people turning on each other."

"We were wrong, Chayton," Angel told him.

They looked around, seeing that everyone was staring at them, or more correctly, Angel, Chayton, Malia and Cory.

"They're gonna turn on us," Chayton told them.

Angel sighed. "And I think it's already started."

Tunnels

Lori and Lydia were helping Brett up to the manhole in the tunnels to get out above.

"Just a little further," Lydia told them. "We're almost out of here."

Lori climbed up first, turning back to pull Brett up.

Ari, Natalie, Adriana and Liam ran toward them frantically, knowing they were walking into a trap, finding another emitter in the wall that was herding them to the manhole.

Lydia started to climb up the ladder.

"Lydia, no!" Ari told her.

Lydia stopped in confusion.

"Brett, wait!" Adriana told him.

"Lori, wait!" Natalie told her.

"What's wrong?" Lydia asked.

"It's a trap," Liam answered.

Lydia felt the impending deaths coming.

Adriana ran up to the ladder, jumping up. Natalie and Ari followed her. Liam was still shifted, following.

¤•¤°¤•¤

Street

Brett and Lori reached above ground in the middle of an intersection. They were holding hands, trying to make a run for it. A large truck was barreling toward them.

Adriana leaped up above ground, only to see the large truck barreling toward Brett and Lori, running closer to try to get to them in time to stop it. "No!"

Brett and Lori didn't have time to run away as the truck was literally in front of them, closing their eyes so they didn't have to see the impact come.

Adriana couldn't get to them in time, stopping just as the truck hit Brett and Lori in front of her, in shock and denial, gasping softly, breathing heavily, tears in her eyes, a few tears falling down her cheeks, but she was too angry and too close to losing control to the darkness that was screaming to be released after having to watch this to fully cry. Natalie, Liam and Ari came up above ground behind her, just as shocked.

Tunnels

Lydia looked horrified, like she felt the crash, the death. "No."

Street

Lydia climbed out of the manhole to join Adriana, Ari, Natalie and Liam outside, running up behind them, looking at Brett and Lori on the ground in shock. Liam was still shifted completely.

Lori weakly pulled herself over to Brett, trying to take his pain from her dead brother, but instead of taking his pain, she was taking the poison in his veins. "Close your eyes. I couldn't take away his pain."

With her head on her brother's chest, Lori slowly died as well.

Ari and Adriana ran toward Brett and Lori's bodies, grabbing their hands to start to give them power, making gold veins trail from their hands into theirs, but it was too late due to the poison in their veins.

So upset and not knowing what to do, Natalie let her eyes glow gold, roaring for Scott and Tara to hear from the tunnels.

Tunnels

Scott and Tara almost made it to the ladder when they heard Natalie roaring from up above. "Natalie?"

Scott and Tara knew what it meant, in shock and horrified.

Street

Ari knew it was too late to save Brett and Lori no matter how much power she and Adriana tried to give them, tears in her eyes, standing, pulling Adriana away from their bodies so she wouldn't lose control to anger, darkness and grief and guilt. "Adri... I'm so sorry."

Cars from all around Ari, Adriana, Lydia, Natalie and Liam suddenly appeared all around the intersection, driving closer on all sides of them, blinding them with headlights.

The driver of the truck got out, spotting Gerard and Monroe in the distance, nodding in their direction, obviously a hunter that had purposefully killed Brett and Lori in front of them.

Monroe looked at Gerard in realization. "You set this up."

"Of course I did," Gerard answered.

"Is this part of the lesson?" Monroe asked.

"Everything's a lesson, every moment with me," Gerard told her. "And if there's one thing you learn today, it's this. The best way to build an army is through fear."

Adriana was so angry and overcome with grief and guilt and rage and devastation that she was starting to lose control. Her eyes glowed completely purple without her meaning to, and her claws and canines grew as well.

People all over the street saw Liam completely shifted, Natalie with gold glowing eyes, and Adriana partially shifted. Everyone looked at them with a mixture of fear and hate.

Natalie looked around worriedly. "Liam..."

Adriana roared angrily in pain at them because they hadn't been able to save Brett and Lori, nearly losing control, roaring in fury and pain.

Ari and Lydia were trying to calm Adriana down, holding her back to keep her anchored to control, holding her to comfort her. "Adri. Adri!"

Natalie had to help Ari and Lydia calm Adriana down so she didn't do anything she regretted in front of everyone. The three of them were the only reasons she was able to even partially hold herself together.

Gerard looked pleased to see Adriana lose control and having to be stopped from hurting someone, scaring the people in the street, which seemed to be a big part of his plan all along.
