chapter 4 - American Nightmare

Outfits in the external link

From 2.10 "Hunted", in the motel room, Sam and Ava Wilson were talking.

"You must be one of us," Sam told her.

"One of who?" Ava asked.

From 5.14 "My Bloody Valentine", in Biggerson's, Sam had his mouth covered in Demon blood, raising his hand toward the Demons and Famine, closing his eyes in concentration, exorcising all five Demons guarding Famine and the two Demons restraining Catty all at once.

Sam: (voice over from 2.10 Hunted) "One of the psychics. I mean, there are others like us out there."

From 2.10 "Hunted", in the motel room, Sam and Ava Wilson were talking.

"And we're all apart of something," Sam told her.

THEN

From 1.14 "Nightmare", in the Impala, Dean was driving. Sam was in the passenger seat. Catty was in the backseat.

"We both have Psychic abilities," Sam told them.

From 1.14 "Nightmare", in the Miller House, Max Miller used telekinesis to slice a knife right through Alice Miller's eye and out the back of her head.

Dean: (voice over from 1.14 Nightmare) "Sam, Max is a monster."

From 1.14 "Nightmare", in Roger Miller's apartment, Roger leaned out of the window, turning to look up at the top of the window. The window slid closed forcefully, decapitating Roger, killing him.

Dean: (voice over from 1.14 Nightmare) "He's killed two people."

From 1.14 "Nightmare", in the Impala, Dean was driving. "Now he's gunning for a third."

From 1.14 "Nightmare", in the Miller House, Max aimed his gun at Sam, Dean and Catty.

"I think I'm here to help you," Sam told him.

Max was crying, breathing heavily. "No one can help me."

From 1.14 "Nightmare", in the Miller House, Max used his telekinesis to shoot himself in the head.

From 2.05 "Simon Said", in the bar TJz where Ness used to work, Sam, Dean and Catty were sitting at the bar. Ness stood across from them.

"There are people out there, like me," Sam told her.

From 5.14 "My Bloody Valentine", in the motel room, Sam turned to a male Demon, mouth and chin drenched in blood, raising a hand toward the male Demon, using magic to throw him into the wall, making him fall to the floor.

Sam: (voice over from 5.14 My Bloody Valentine) "We all have some kind of ability."

From 2.21 "All Hell Breaks Loose: Part 1", in the Ghost Town, Andy Gallagher was holding a piece of paper to send Catty a vision of where they were.

Ness: (voice over from 2.05 Simon Said) "Ability?"

From 2.05 "Simon Said", in the diner, Ansem Weems took control of Tracy's mind.

Sam: (voice over from 2.05 Simon Said) "Psychic ability."

From 2.05 "Simon Said", in TJz, Sam, Dean, Catty and Ness were talking.

"These people out there, these Psychics..." Ness trailed off. "They dangerous?"

"Not all of them," Catty answered.

"But some are," Sam told her. "Some are very dangerous."

"Okay, how many of them are we looking at?" Ness asked.

From 12.03 "The Foundry", in the library of the Bunker, Octavia and Mary were talking.

"Ava?" Mary asked. Octavia turned to face her. "After you left Heaven, when did it start to feel like you fit?"

From 12.01 "Keep Calm and Carry On", at the outdoor cafe, Mary was sitting at a table, looking around at the kids at the next table, who were listening to music through headphones and playing video games on handheld devices, overwhelmed.

Mary: (voice over from 12.03 The Foundry) "Like you... belonged here?"

From 12.03 "The Foundry", in the library of the Bunker, Octavia and Mary were talking.

"You do belong here," Octavia told her.

From 12.03 "The Foundry", in Ariel and Faith's nursery, Octavia and Mary were talking.

"Ava, what is it like?" Mary asked. Octavia looked at her in confusion. "Being an Angel for so long... and then giving up your Grace to become Human for your family?"

"It's... reeling," Octavia answered. "Your family loves you."

"I know," Mary told her. "They're not the problem. I am."

From 12.03 "The Foundry", in the library of the Bunker, Sam, Dean, Catty and Mary were talking.

"Mom..." Sam trailed off. Mary sighed heavily. "What are you trying to say?"

"I have to go," Mary told them. Sam, Dean and Catty weren't surprised, but they were a little hurt. "I just need a little time." Mary turned to wrap her arms around Catty for a moment, pulling away. She turned to Dean. Dean took a step back, looking down. Mary picked up John's Journal from the table. "I love you." She embraced Sam, pulling away, looking at Dean and Catty. "I love you all."

Sam and Catty flinched at the sound of the door opening and closing. Mary walked out, leaving. Sam and Catty looked at Dean, sighing. Dean was gazing off into nothing.

Mason City, Iowa

Day One

Morning - Church

Church bells were tolling. Parishioners were praying.

The priest approached the altar.

A woman walked in. She was crying, showing signs of stigmata. Her feet were bleeding. The sound of a whip cracked was heard, and the woman screamed. Her back showed signs of being whipped. She left a trail of blood as she walked down the aisle.

"Olivia?" the priest asked in concern.

Olivia gasped in pain, walking down the aisle, leaving a trail of blood on the floor. "Prok yaw-thi a-law-haw." She stopped in front of the priest. The whip cracked again. Olivia cried out in pain, falling to her knees. "Prok yaw-thi..." The priest watched in horror. Olivia continued to sob. Blood began to slowly flow from her right ea, trailing down her neck.  "Prok yaw-thi a-law-haw~"

The priest ran closer.

Olivia collapsed to the floor.

The camera pulled away from her dead body.

Road - The Impala

Dean was driving. Sam was in the passenger seat. Catty was in the backseat. They were in their FBI suits. Catty was texting on her phone.

Hi, Mom. Just checking in. Is Mom still okay or weird? Should I call you Mary?

Catty waited for an answer, but none came. "Now I'm a 13-year-old girl."

Sam had his phone on speaker. "So, Father Valdecantos said that Olivia was a good person. He watched her get flayed alive by some invisible force. Says it was the Devil's work."

Ness, Octavia and Amara were in the Bunker, in the library with the babies, feeding them.

Aiden was smiling and gurgling.

Ness was sitting at her laptop, with her phone on speaker so they could tear Sam, Dean and Catty.

"Did he see any black smoke?" Ness asked.

"Uh, no," Dean answered. "No smoke."

"Sulfur?" Octavia asked.

"No," Catty answered. "No, but he did say that Olivia was speaking in tongues, that it sounded like Hebrew."

"What did she say?" Amara asked.

"Prok yaw-thi a-law-haw," Sam answered.

"That's not Hebrew," Octavia told them. "That's Aramaic."

"What does it mean?" Amara asked.

"It means, 'Save me, oh, God'," Octavia answered.

"Save me from what?" Ness asked.

Catty shrugged. "Only one way to find out. But, no sulfur means no Demon."

"You think the padre's right?" Dean asked. "We talking about Lucifer here?"

"Little small-time for him," Sam told them. "I don't know. Maybe a rogue Angel?"

"No, no, no," Catty told them. "I just talked to Cas. Well, good news, uh, there's nothing on Angel Radio. And Heaven's still on lockwdown, so rogue Angel is out."

"Bad news?" Ness asked.

"Cas, Levi and Sow are chumming it up with Crowley," Catty answered. "They're hunting Lucifer together. That's right. Two are Angels, one's a Demon, one's a Hybrid, and apparently, they solve crimes."

"Are they having any luck?" Amara asked.

"Kind of," Catty answered. "So, Lucifer, the Lord of Evil, Angel of Light, is now the Master of Butt Rock. He jumped into Vince Vincente."

"The rock star?" Ness asked.

"The douchebag," Dean told them. "Guy used to roll with purple hair down to his butt and a spiked codpiece."

"It--it was the '80s," Sam told them.

"The what?" Amara asked.

Sam chuckled. "Uh, it was the '80s."

"What, are you defending him?" Dean asked.

Sam sighed. "No, I'm not... I mean, his third album was kind of... not horrible."

"I hate you so much right now," Dean told him.

Sam ignored him, looking at Catty, who was looking at them in amusement. "Anyway, he's the Devil now?"

"Well, I mean, he was always kind of the Devil, but, yeah, now it's official," Catty answered.

"Where is he?" Octavia asked.

"Rowena blasted him to the bottom of the ocean," Catty told them.

"Why?" Amara asked.

"I don't know, Amara," Catty told her. "Why does Sammy love Vince Vincente?"

Sam gave them a look. "I don't love--"

Sam gave up, sighing.

Ness, Octavia and Amara were smirking in amusement.

"Good luck," Octavia told them.

"All right, thanks, guys," Sam told them.

Ness nodded. "Of course."

  §

Hospital - Morgue

The coroner led Sam, Dean and Catty into the morgue. "Body's right there, Agents. I can get her prepped to your--"

"That's great, Carl," Dean told him. "Uh, we'll take it from here."

"Oh, okay," Carl told them. "Um, but... it's a weird'un. If you guys need anything at all, I'm--"

"We won't," Dean told him. "We won't." Sam and Catty looked at him. "Thank you."

"Are... you sure?" Carl asked.

"Yep," Dean answered.

"Oh, okay," Carl told them.

Dean ushered Carl out of the room, closing the door.

"Little, uh, tough on Carl, don't you think?" Sam asked.

"Ah, he's a big boy," Dean told them. "He can take it."

"You okay?" Catty asked.

"Peachy," Dean told them.

"You sure?" Catty asked. "'Cause ever since Mom left, you've been a little, uh... cranky."

"Cranky, huh?" Dean asked.

"Yeah," Sam answered. "I mean, to Carl. Heck, on the way here, you wouldn't even make a pit stop."

"So, now your tiny bladder is my problem?" Dean asked.

"I'm just saying--" Sam started.

Dean looked at the clipboard. "Olivia Sanchez. The body was found. It had deep cuts on her back as though she'd been whipped. Holes punctured through her hands and her feet, and pinprick wounds around the top of her skull. What's that sound like to you?"

"Stigmata," Catty answered.

"Bingo," Dean told them. "Gets weirder."

"How?" Catty asked. Dean handed the clipboard to Catty. Catty read from the autopsy report. "'The victim's skull was filled with goopy mush'."

"That Carl paints quite a picture, doesn't he?" Dean asked. "All right. What can do all that?"

Sam shook his head. "I got nothing."

"Me, neither," Catty told them.

"Well, maybe we should focus more on the case and less on the Dr. Phil crap," Dean told them, walking toward the door.

Sam and Catty exchanged a look, sighing, following.

  §

Child Protective Service - Hallway

The siblings went to the child protective services building.

A man was removing the sign from what used to be Olivia Sanchez's office.

  §

Office

A woman escorted the siblings inside. "It's just over here. This is... was Olivia's office."

"So, what is it now?" Sam asked.

The woman hesitated. "Kinda mine now."

Catty looked at a lit candle on her desk. "So, is that yours?"

The woman nodded. "It's for positive energy. I'm a Wiccan."

"Cool," Dean told them.

Sam, Dean and Catty exchanged a look, looking at the woman.

"So, Beth, how well did you Olivia?" Sam asked.

"She was my boss," Beth told them. "Is it true what they're saying? That she, you know... killed herself?"

"Well, we're working on that," Sam told her. "Um, now the day she died, was Olivia acting strange?"

"Not really," Beth answered. "I mean, she was getting headaches. Bad ones. Like super migraines. But we all knew she was working too hard."

"She have any enemies?" Catty asked. "Somebody who held a grudge, maybe wanted to do her harm?"

"Yeah," Beth answered. "I mean, Olivia was great, but this is Child Protective Services. We get threats all the time."

"From who?" Dean asked.

"Everyone," Beth answered. "You don't make a lot of friends when sometimes what's best for a family is to split them up."

The siblings exchanged an uncomfortable look.

"Right," Sam told her. "Um, yeah, can we see Olivia's case files?"

"Of course," Beth answered. "They're right over here."

  §

Outside

Sam, Dean and Catty walked outside.

Sam was holding the case files.

"Well, that was easy," Dean told them.

"What?" Catty asked.

"What?" Dean repeated. "The Wicca'd Witch of the West in there. Little Miss Positive Energy wanted a bigger office, did a little hoodoo. Boom. I say we put a Witch-killing cap in her ass, call it a day."

"Yeah, but we checked the church and Olivia's house," Catty told him. "We didn't exactly find any Hex Bags."

"So, she covered her tracks," Dean told them.

They reached the Impala.

"But we're not looking at a Witch," Sam told them. "I'm not saying it's not Beth." Dean opened the trunk of the Impala. "I'm--I'm just saying, we need proof. And, look, if it is her, I'll shoot her myself."

Dean picked up a box of Witch-killing bullets. "Oh, no, no, no, no. No, I'm definitely shooting her."

Dean closed the trunk.

Sam and Catty sighed, shaking their heads.

They got into the Impala.

Night - Loading Dock

(Song:) Golden Dunes - The Budos Band

A delivery boy was picking up produce, listening to music through headphones. There was the sound of a whip cracking. Blood appeared on his back. He started to groan and scream in pain. "Prok yaw-thi a-law-haw!"

The whip cracked again, making him scream, cracking several more times. Signs of stigmata appeared over his body. The delivery boy fell to the ground.

The music continued to play.

The camera shot pulled out to show the scene from above.

Day Two

Morning - On the Road - The Impala

Dean was driving. Sam was in the passenger seat. Catty was in the backseat. They were speaking over speakerphone.

Ness' voice was on the other line."I hacked into the coroner's office." She was in the Bunker with Octavia and Amara. "Signs of stigmata with a side of scrambled brains, just like Olivia."

"Awesome," Dean told them sarcastically.

"Did you find anything else?" Catty asked.

"Maybe," Ness answered. "Kid delivered groceries all over town, so I checked his route against Olivia's case files."

"And?" Octavia asked.

"Got a match," Ness answered. "The Petersons. Hacked into Child Protective Services to find out what I can about them."

"All right, tell us," Amara told her.

"They're weird," Ness told them.

"How weird?" Amara asked.

"All the way," Ness answered. Sam, Catty and Dean were listening in interest."That family, they're, like, off the charts religious. Old, old testament. I'm talking no cars, no electricity, no nothing." Amara tilted her head curiously, looking at the computer in front of Ness. Octavia stood behind them so she could see as well. "Kids are home schooled.Their oldest, Magda. A few years ago, she got pneumonia, and the family wouldn't let a doctor treat her." They were looking at the information on Magda, with a picture of a girl with short brown hair. Ness showed the picture to Octavia and Amara, sending the information to Sam, Catty and Dean's phones. "They said whatever happened was God's will."

"What happened?" Dean asked.

"She died," Ness told them

Sam shook his head. "So?"

"Weird, creepy, off the grid, 'Children of the Corn' people?" Catty asked. "Yeah, I'm in."

"All right, thanks, guys," Dean told them.

"You got it," Ness told them, hanging up.

Amara looked at Ness and Octavia.

Dean started the car, driving off, leaving.

  §

Peterson House - Outside

The Impala was driving down the road, turning into a driveway, parking at a locked gate with a no trespassing sign on it.

Sam, Dean and Catty got out of the car, dressed as Child Protective Services workers, wearing sweaters.

"Guess we're walking from here," Dean told them. Sam and Dean had issues going over the fence, but they eventually made it. Catty was able to squeeze through a gap between the end of the fence and a tree. They walked down the driveway, seeing a power pole down on the ground, no longer connected. "Whoa. When they cut the cord, they really cut the cord."

"Yeah, no kidding," Catty told them.

"How fast you think their buggy goes?" Dean asked. "Like, top speed?"

Sam looked at Dean. "Hey, about yesterday..."

"Oh, all right," Dean told him. "Next time you gotta take a leak, I'll pull over."

"I'm not talking about that," Sam told him. "I'm talking about you and Mom."

"What about her?" Dean asked. "What, she took some cash, she took a cellphone, she doesn't answer, and she bailed on us."

"I mean, think about what she's going through," Catty told them. "After everything, she probably just needs some space. We've been there. We've all had times where we needed time apart."

"And we all came back," Dean told them.

"You don't think she's going to?" Catty asked.

"I don't know," Dean told them. "She hates the way that we were raised. She hates the fact that we're hunters. She loves the kids, yeah, and she doesn't mind what they are, but she wishes that things could be different with them. Maybe she starts walking and doesn't stop. You know, she obviously has zero interest in keeping this family together."

"Well, you know, sometimes families do better after a little time apart," Sam told them.

"Yeah, who?" Dean asked. "The Mansons?"

They walked up to the house.

There were sounds of animals in the distance.

A man walked around the house toward them. "Can I help you?"

"Uh, Abraham Peterson?" Sam asked. "I'm James Morrison. These are my associates Ray Manzarek and Patty Sullivan. Uh, we're your new case workers with Child Protective Services."

"Pleasure to meet you," Abraham told them.

"Pleasure to meet you," Sam told him.

"Yeah, thought you'd be, uh, you know, long beard, suspenders, big hat," Dean told him.

Abraham chuckled. "We're not that kind of religious."

Catty nodded. "Ah."

  §

Inside - Living Room

Sam, Dean and Catty were sitting with Abraham and his wife.

"Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, we're here because your previous case worker, Olivia Sanchez, has passed away," Sam told them.

Abraham and the woman made the symbol of the cross over themselves.

"What happened?" Abraham asked.

"We're not sure yet," Catty told them. "How often did she visit?"

"Every few months," Abraham answered.

"We liked her better than the other one, that Beth," the woman told them.

"And what was wrong with Beth?" Sam asked.

"She hated us because of our faith," the woman told them. "Olivia Sanchez was a Papist, but... at least she believed in God."

Dean nodded. "Hmm."

"Do you know God?" the woman asked.

"Oh, yeah," Catty answered. "Yeah, we're--we're besties."

Sam and Dean looked at Catty with seriously? looks.

Catty shrugged slightly, tilting her head.

A teenage boy walked into the room, whispering to Abraham.

"Okay," Abraham told him. He looked at Sam and Dean. "Um, I'm a little embarrassed to ask, but do you think you boys might help me with something?"

  §

Outside

The motorcycle that Ness had commented on outside of the gas station in 12.03 The Foundry pulled up next to the Impala. The man's face was hidden by his helmet. He looked at the license plate of the car, driving away.

  §

Backyard

Sam, Dean, Abraham and his son were outside fixing the wheel on the buggy.

"So, what happens when, uh, stuff like this goes wrong, and no one's around to help you?" Sam asked.

"Pray harder," the son told them.

"See, I'm not good with all this," Abraham told them. "I was a computer programmer till about five years ago."

"What made you move out to the middle of nowhere?" Dean asked.

"Oh, the world out there is all distractions," Abraham told them. "Consumerism, corporations. And the people, if they're not shopping or stuffing their face, they're sitting in front of some screen watching fake people do fake things, while the real world just gets more and more screwed up. Gail and I, we didn't want that for our kids, so... so here we are, sweating our butts off."

"The things you do for family," Sam told them. "Hmm."

"It's ready," the son told them.

"All right, thanks, Elijah," Abraham told him. 'All right, let's get this wheel on. On three. One, two, three."

Sam and Dean lifted the buggy.

Abraham and Elijah put the fallen wheel onto the buggy.

Elijah sighed. "Okay."

  §

Inside - Living Room

A clock was chiming.

Catty looked a family picture.

The woman walked toward her. "We're out of coffee. Hope lemonade's all right."

The woman handed her a glass.

"Oh, yeah," Catty answered. "Great. Thank you, Gail." She gestured to the picture. "Happy family."

"No, they weren't," Gail told her. "The father was working 80 hours a week to barely pay the mortgage. And what little time he did spend at home, he spent in a bottle. Children were on four different kind of behavior-enhancing medication and barely spoke. Could text up a storm, though. And the mother, she was the worst. She was so pilled up, she could barely think straight."

"So, what happened?" Catty asked.

"God showed them a better way," Gail told her. "I was in a car accident. Almost died. Nerves in the lower half of my body are damaged."

"Wow," Catty told her.

"I saw doctors," Gail told her. "No one could stop the pain. Best they could do was give me drugs, which helped for a while."

Catty nodded. "Yeah."

"But the more I took, the more I needed," Gail told her. "And when I didn't get them... And then one night, when things were at their worst... I was lying in a puddle of my own sick. I heard a voice. It was God's voice. And he said, 'Go. Live a life of simplicity and humility. And all your pain will be taken away'."

"So has the pain gone away?" Catty asked.

"I get by, with His grace," Gail told her.

"Gail, um, what can you tell me about Ricky Copeland?" Catty asked.

"The delivery boy?" Gail asked.

"Yeah," Catty answered.

"Comes by once a week, brings us things we can't grow ourselves," Gail explained. "Why?"

"Well, he's dead, too," Catty answered.

Gail took this in. "I see."

"You see?" Catty repeated. "That's it?"

"God has a plan for us all," Gail told her.

"So, what happened to your daughter, was that God's plan?" Catty asked.

Gail hesitated. "Yes."

"She didn't have to die," Catty told her. "She was sick. If you had taken her to a doctor--"

"God does--" Gail started.

"God doesn't care what kind of life you live," Catty told her. "Trust me. And God didn't kill your daughter. You did."

They heard Abraham's voice. "Think you three should go."

They looked toward where Dean, Sam, Abraham and Elijah were standing.

  §

Outside

Sam, Dean and Catty were standing next to the Impala.

Dean opened the trunk, pulling out his gun. "All right. We're clear on what we gotta do, right?"

Sam nodded, pulling out the EMF reader. "Yeah, definitely."

"What's that for?" Dean asked.

"To track down Magda's Ghost," Sam answered. He looked at Dean's gun. "What's..."

"Beth, the Witch," Dean told them.

"Dean, this isn't a Witch," Catty told him.

"Well, it's not a Ghost," Dean told them.

"Those people let their daughter die," Sam told them. "She's angry and wants revenge."

"Yeah, but they're alive," Dean told them. "Besides, how--how she getting around town, huh? Ghosts are tied to one place."

"Or--or to a person or to a thing," Sam told them.

"Oh, you're reaching," Dean told him.

"And you're not?" Catty asked. "Beth didn't even know the delivery boy."

"Maybe, maybe not," Dean told them. "But I'm gonna find out."

"Look, you didn't spend alone time with that woman," Catty told them. "She is disturbed."

"The family's weird, but they're good people," Dean told them. "Look, Beth wanted the better job. She killed to get it. End of story."

"You're wrong," Sam told him.

"All right, look, you got your ideas, I got mine," Dean told them. "You wanna stay here and, uh, scan the farm for EMF, you go right ahead. I'm on Beth."

"Fine," Sam told him. "We'll see who's right."

"Well, you'll see I'm right," Dean told them, walking toward the driver's seat of the car.

Sam sighed, gesturing to the car. "Catty, go with Dean and stop him from doing something he'll regret."

Catty sighed. "Yeah..." She walked toward the car. "Dean, wait."

  §

Porch

Gail was standing on the porch.

Abraham and Elijah were walking some horses.

Gail walked inside.

  §

Inside - Basement

Magda was lying on the floor. Her back was flayed and raw. She was singing. "I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy / Down in my heart / Where? / Down in my heart to stay / And if the Devil doesn't like it / He can sit on a tack / Ouch / Sit on a tack / Ouch / And I'm so happy / So very happy."

  §

Gail opened the basement door, walking downstairs toward her daughter. "What did you do?"

"Nothing," Magda told her. "Nothing."

"Liar," Gail told her. "That woman. That boy. You killed them."

"What?" Magda asked. "No."

Gail slapped Magda in the face. "I have tried to keep the Devil locked away, and you let him out. You couldn't let it rest And now... now the Devil is doing his work through you. Confess your sins." She handed a whip to Magda. "Pray for forgiveness."

Magda untied the back of her shift to show the scars from previous flayings. "Prok yaw-thi a-law-haw a-rum mayyaw mto'ad naf-shaw." She performed self-flagellation by whipping herself on the back, groaning and crying in pain. "Tma-ith bama-a-ma-ke syawn w-leth a-thar lma-kum."

Magda whipped herself again.

  §

Outside

Elijah heard the sounds of Magda chanting in Arabic and the cries of her whipping herself, walking closer.

  §

Barn

Sam stepped into the barn, wearing normal clothes. He was holding a flashlight and an EMF meter. He heard a door creek open, hiding himself.

Abraham and Elijah walked in.

"Elijah?" Abraham asked. "What's wrong?"

"Mom's with Magda," Elijah answered.

"Your mother's doing God's work," Abraham told him.

"She's hurting her," Elijah told him.

"Son, the Devil's a deceiver," Abraham told him. "Don't let him sow doubt in you." A horse whined. Sam was shown hiding in the stall. "If anyone found out about Magda, they'd come fr her." Abraham grabbed a feed bucket, hanging it on a stall. "And if that happened... I love your sister, but you know what she can do. Magda... Magda's our cross to bear."

Elijah and Abraham walked out of the barn.

Sam walked out of the stall, taking out his phone, trying to make a call, but there was no signal. "Come on."

  §

Night - Child Protective Services - Beth's Office

Dean and Catty went to talk to Beth in her office, wearing normal clothes.

Beth was sitting at her desk.

The candle was still lit.

"Working late?" Dean asked.

Beth looked up to see them standing in the doorway. "Oh. Sorry, Agents. You surprised me."

Dean was hiding a gun behind his back. "No worries."

"Can I help you?" Beth asked.

Catty walked closer. "How you liking the new gig?"

"I hate it," Beth answered.

Dean and Catty looked at her in surprise. "What?"

"Yeah," Beth answered. "You make more, but you work more. And if somebody screws up, that's on you. If somebody blows a deadline, that's on you. And if somebody's photocopying their ass in the breakroom, you have to adult and act all mad, even though it's kind of hilarious. Being the boss sucks. I don't know how Olivia did it."

"I--I thought you wanted this job," Dean told her.

Beth chuckled. "No. Nobody wants this job."

Catty nodded in understanding. "Oh."

Catty backed away toward Dean, getting him to put the gun away without Beth noticing.

"So, why are you here?" Beth asked.

Dean and Catty exchanged a look. "Um..."

  §

Peterson House - Basement

Magda was kneeling on the floor.

Gail was standing nearby. "Krav lwaw-thi prok yaw-thi." Magda whipped herself on the back, crying in pain. "Hekh ksa-gi-uth ra-chamawch this-tha-kal lwaw-thi." Magda whipped herself on the back, sobbing. Sam looked into the window. "W-al this-tha-lak... a pawch me-av-dawch. A-ni yaw-thi sar-hev a-rum yawk li." Magda was crying. Sam looked on in disgust and horror. "Again. Again!" Magda continued sobbing, whipping herself. "Ra-chamawch this-tha-kal lwaw-thi. Shezev-ni mba-le dvawv-yay." Magda whipped herself. "A-ni yaw-thi a-do-nay a-rum tawv."

  §

Outside

Sam answered his ringing phone. "Hey."

Dean and Catty were outside of the protection services building.

"Beth is not a Witch," Catty told him. "You were right about the whole Ghost thing."

"Listen, Magda is still alive," Sam told them.

"Wait, what?" Dean asked.

"Yes, Magda's not dead," Sam answered. "She's alive."

Sam heard the sound of a shotgun cocking.

"Sam?" Catty asked.

Sam turned to see Elijah holding a shotgun.

"Don't move," Elijah told him.

"Sammy?" Dean asked.

Sam looked at Elijah. "Okay, listen to me. I can help your sister, okay? I just need you to trust me here."

Abraham came up behind Sam, hitting him over the head with another shotgun, making him fall unconscious.

Child Protective Services - Outside

Dean and Catty were still trying to talk to Sam over the phone, not realizing that he had been knocked out, walking toward the Impala.

"Sam?" Dean asked. "Sammy?"

They got into the car, driving away.

Peterson House - Basement

Magda was chained up, singing to herself. "Joshua fought the battle of Jericho  And the walls came tumbling down." Sam was nearby, tied up with his hands behind his back, waking up. "You may talk about your men of Gideon / You may talk about your men of..."

"Magda?" Sam asked. Magda stopped singing. "Magda Peterson."

"That's not my name," Magda told him. "I'm not Magda. I'm the Devil."

Sam shook his head. "No. No, you're not. You're really not."

"He's inside me," Magda told him. "I can hear him whispering. He lets me hear what people are thinking. He lets me do things."

"What kind of things?" Sam asked. "Magda, I'm here... I'm here to help you. Show me. Please."

Magda looked at the cross on the wall, using the power of her mind to make it come off of the wall and hover in the air.

Dining Room

Sam's phone was on the table, ringing.

Gail and Abraham stood next to it, staring at the phone.

"They'll come for us, our children," Gail told him. "We need to leave tonight."

  §

Basement

Sam was tied up.

Magda was chained up, keeping her back to him. She let the cross down.

"Magda, you're not the Devil," Sam told her. "You're just Psychic. There are others out there like you. Like--like me. I have powers, too. I'd get these visions sometimes, and--and I could move things with my mind."

"You can do that?" Magda asked.

"Well, no, not anymore," Sam answered. "I don't think. But that didn't make me the Devil. It--it--it just made me who I am."

"Then you are evil," Magda told him. "Mother says I'm evil, 'cause I hurt people."

"Who did you hurt?" Sam asked.

"I didn't mean it," Magda told him. "She was pretty, and she always smiled." She looked up at the window. "And I thought that maybe she could help me."

Now

Night - Peterson House - Basement

Sam was tied up.

Magda was chained up, keeping her back to him. "And I did it again with the delivery boy. Mother says I killed them."

"Magda, that wasn't your fault," Sam told her. "You are not the Devil. You're not evil. And it's scary. I--I know it's scary. But you can learn how to control it. You don't ever have to hurt anyone ever again."

The door opened.

Magda turned toward the sound, making her chains rattle.

Abraham and Elijah walked downstairs.

"It's time for supper," Elijah told them.

Abraham aimed his shotgun at Sam.

Dining Room

The clock chimed.

Sam was tied to a chair at the table.

Abraham, Magda and Elijah were sitting at the table.

Gail grabbed a pot of stew from the sideboard, walking closer. "Who's hungry?"

"Abraham, your daughter needs help," Sam told him.

Gail began to serve the food.

"What do you think we've been doing all these years?" Abraham asked.

"You talk about knowing God, but we know the Devil," Gail told him. Sam scoffed. Gail continued to serve the food. "We've been wrestling with her for years. You have any idea what she's done?"

"Those people, but... that wasn't her fault," Sam told them.

"You think they're the first?" Gail asked. She looked at Magda. "Tell him. Tell him!"

Magda flinched, hesitating, looking at Sam. "Before we came here... I wanted a new cellphone, but my mom wouldn't buy me one."

"We were driving home, and she screamed at me to pull over," Gail told him. "And I felt the Devil at my hands. I yanked that wheel right into oncoming traffic. She did this to me. She did this to us. She has taken lives. Don't you understand that by keeping her here, we're protecting you?"

"By doing what?" Sam asked. "Beating the hell out of her?"

"Pain surges sin," Gail told him.

"No, it doesn't," Sam told them. "You're wrong. Abraham."

"It's time," Gail told them.

The family bowed their heads in prayer.

Abraham started to pray. "We thank you for these bountiful gifts. May they nourish our body and soul. And look after each one of us, now and until our dying day. Amen."

Gail and Elijah spoke together. "Amen."

Abraham took a bite of the stew. "Mm."

"Dig in, everyone," Gail told them. "Elijah."

Elijah didn't make a move to eat.

Abraham dropped his spoon, beginning to choke.

"Dad?" Elijah asked.

Abraham continued choking, beginning to foam at the mouth.

Sam looked at him in alarm. "Abraham?"

Abraham grabbed at his throat.

Elijah stood worriedly, in horror. "Dad?"

Gail stood to make Elijah sit down. "Shh."

Abraham continued to choke, falling face first into his bowl of stew, dead.

Sam looked at Gail. "What did you do?"

The camera panned back to reveal a can of "Rat Hell" used as mouse block and rat poison.

Gail sat down. "Eat."

"What did you do?" Sam asked incredulously.

Gail looked at Magda and Elijah. "This is how we will stay together. We will enter Heaven as a family. Eat."

"Elijah, do not eat that," Sam told him. Elijah picked up a spoonful of the stew. "Elijah!"

Gail stood.

"Mom?" Elijah asked.

Gail walked closer to stand right next to Elijah intimidatingly. "Eat."

"Elijah, do not do it," Sam told him.

"Eat!" Gail told him.

Elijah came very close to eating.

Magda was horrified and angry that her mother would make him do this. "No!"

The force of Magda's mind made Elijah drop the spoon.

Gail glared at Magda. "Devil."

Dishes and bowls flew off the table, shattering against the wall.

Gail looked down, picking up a knife, lunging for Magda.

Elijah threw himself between Gail and Magda. "No!"

Gail unintentionally stabbed Elijah in the heart when she had been trying to stab Magda because he had saved his sister's life.

Magda gasped in horror, devastated.

Gail took the knife out of Elijah's wound, letting his body fall to the floor.

Magda soon became angry.

Gail tried to stab Magda in the heart.

Magda used magic to stop the knife just before it reached her chest. "I'm not the Devil. You are."

Magda used her powers to turn the knife around on Gail.

Sam tried to get out of the chair.  "Magda, stop! You don't have to do this. You could control it." Magda continued to turn the knife on Gail, making her point it at her own chest. "Magda, nobody else has to die. Please!"

The knife paused at Gail's chest.

Magda released control of the knife.

Gail dropped the knife to the floor.

Sam looked at them in overwhelmed emotion, relieved that he had been able to stop Magda from killing her mother, but disappointed that he couldn't have stopped Gail from killing her husband or son.

Day Three

Lebanon, Kansas

Morning - The Bunker - Library

Sam, Dean and Catty had returned home to the Bunker in time to have breakfast with Ness, Octavia and Amara the next morning, eating, drinking.

"Sorry we missed all the psycho," Amara told them.

"Amara, you thought our family was crazy," Catty told her.

Ness nodded. "Yeah. What happened to Magda?"

"She went to stay with her aunt in California," Sam answered. "She has a ranch. Lots of wide open country."

"Well, that's great," Dean told them. "You know, sometimes in order to figure things out, a person needs space." They looked at Dean in surprise. Dean looked down. "Think we made the right call back there, letting Magda go?"

"Yeah," Octavia answered. "I mean, Magda didn't know what she was doing. She had no idea. I think she deserves a second chance."

"You mean like Sabrina, Ava?" Catty asked.

Octavia smiled, chuckling. "Yes, Catty, like Sabrina."

Ness looked at Dean. "Hey, um... did you mean what you said just now?"

"Yeah, you were right," Dean told them. "This whole Mom thing, it's... I mean, we get her back, and then she leaves. I hate it, but I get it. I do. I guess I just... still working through some of that crap. I'll try to be less of a dick about it."

"Deal," Amara told him.

Catty's phone chimed. She looked down to see two texts from Mary.

Hey, Catty, phone died. Didn't have a charger.

Things are good. I'll always be MOM. Tell everyone I love you guys.

Catty smiled, looking up, putting her phone in her pocket.

"What?" Amara asked.

"Mom texted," Catty answered. "She says to tell everyone she loves us."

They all smiled.

Sam chuckled. "Ava, how are you doing with the whole Human mother thing?"

"I'm... still adjusting," Octavia answered. "It's been weird, Sam, but not difficult. Surprisingly."

Sam chuckled. "Surprisingly."

"All I know is that I might be slower and weaker and more vulnerable than I was when I was an Angel, but I do want to be able to protect you guys without being taken," Octavia told them. "Again."

"Well, that wasn't exactly a fair fight," Sam told her. "You got jumped the day you turned Human. The chauffeur guy hurt Amara and Toni shot Ness, which distracted you so that she could shoot you, too. You were more worried about Ness, Amara, Aiden, Faith and Ariel than you were about yourself, Ava."

Octavia shook her head. "That's no excuse, Sam. I just want to make sure that nothing like that ever happens again."

Ness looked at her daughter teasingly. "Amara." Amara looked up. "Speaking of people who are too hard on themselves that don't want anything like that to happen again..."

"Yes, I know I'm too hard on myself," Amara told them. "But so are all of you, on yourselves. Being hard on yourselves is a family trait."

Catty nodded. "Ain't that the truth."

Dean chuckled. "But I did hear from Nessie and Ava that training's going well, Amara."

Amara nodded. "Yeah. I'm far from road-ready. I don't know if I actually want to be out there in the field. I just know that I want to be able to protect myself and stop bad things from happening."

"Well, whatever you choose, we'll stand by your choice," Ness told her. "Okay?"

"I know that," Amara told them. "And I love you guys for it."

Sam, Dean, Catty, Ness and Octavia smiled. "Aw."

Amara smiled, shaking her head. "Shut up."

They laughed, looking at each other happily, continuing to eat and drink.

Santa Cruz, California

Night - Bus Stop

The bus made a stop to allow the passengers to take a break.

"All right, bathrooms to the right," the bus driver told them. "Soda machines to the left. You have 20 minutes, folks. Then we're off to Cali."

The passengers disembarked.

Magda walked toward the bathrooms alone. She passed by the man with the motorcycle from earlier.

The man took off his helmet, following Magda, pulling out a gun, putting a silencer onto it, walking into the bathroom after Magda.

Magda turned toward him, looking confused.

The bathroom door closed behind them.

The sounds of gunshots were heard.

The man walked outside.

Magda was seen lying on the ground in the bathroom, dead.

The door closed on her body.

The man walked away, making a call.

Another man's voice was on the other line. "What's your status?"

"I cleaned up the Winchesters' mess," Man 1 told him. "As suspected, they couldn't finish the job."

"Very well," Man 2 told him. "Thank you, Mr. Ketch."

Mr. Ketch hung up.
