Clips from 1.01"Pilot"
The Winchester House.
Young Sam walked into Baby Catty's nursery to see a man's silhouette standing over Baby Catty's crib. "Daddy?"
Mary ran toward the nursery, stopping short.
John gave Baby Catty to Young Sam. "Take your sister outside as fast as you can! Now, Sammy, go!"
Young Sam and Young Dean ran out of the house with Baby Catty.
John looked at the ceiling.
Their mother mysteriously died.
John watched the nursery burn, Mary with it. "Mary! No!"
Now they are...
From 1.07 "Hook Man", in Lori and Taylor's dorm room, Dean, Catty and Sam were looking at the message on the wall.
From 1.01 "Pilot", in Sam's Apartment, Catty spoke to Sam and Jessica. "Dad's on a hunting trip."
In Sam's Apartment's bedroom, Sam pulled out a hook-shaped knife.
In Sam's Apartment, Catty spoke to Sam and Jessica. "And he hasn't been home in a few days."
Are on a quest for answers
In the Jericho County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff tossed down John's Journal.
From 1.02 "Wendigo", in the woods, Dean knelt in front of Sam and Catty, holding John's Journal. "This is Dad's book. I think he wants us to pick up where we left off."
From 1.07 "Hook Man", in the church, Sam slammed the basement door closed. The hook broke through the wooden door.
Sam took Lori's hand, running down the aisle of pews.
Dean: (voice over from 1.02 Wendigo) "Saving people."
Hook Man opened the basement door.
Catty shot Hook Man in the chest, making him disappear.
Dean: (voice over from 1.02 Wendigo) "Hunting things."
From 1.01 "Pilot" on the road, The Impala drove right through Constance Welch as Sam brought it to a halt.
From 1.06 "Skin", in the sewers, Dean, Sam and Catty were looking for the Shapeshifter.
Dean: (voice over from 1.02 Wendigo) "The family business."
From 1.01 "Pilot", in the stairwell outside Sam's apartment, Sam spoke to Catty and Dean. "You think Mom would have wanted this for us?"
Outside in the parking lot, Catty spoke to Sam. "We can't do this alone."
From 1.07 "Hook Man", outside the church, Dean and Catty stood at the Impala.
"I wanna drive," Catty told him.
From 1.07 "Hook Man", The Impala drove away up a slightly inclined street, reaching the top of the hill, starting to go down, leaving the field of sight.

Rockford, Illinois
Day One
Night - Roosevelt Asylum
The building was deserted.
Graffiti and rubbish was everywhere.
Flashlights moved along the walls.
A chain across a door was broken.
§
Outside
A police car pulled up. Two officers walked up to the chain link fence surrounding the building.
"Can't keep kids out of this place," Officer 1 told him.
"What is it, anyway?" Officer 2 asked.
"I forgot," Officer 1 told him. "You're not a local. You don't know the legend."
"Legend?" Officer 2 repeated.
"Every town's got it's stories, right?" Officer 1 asked. "Ours is Roosevelt Asylum. They say it's haunted with the ghosts of the patients. Spend the night, the Spirits will drive you insane."
§
Inside
The officers walked inside with flashlights.
"Hello?" Officer 1 called. "Police officers. Po-lice officers." They saw the broken chain on the floor. "You telling me these kids brought bolt-cutters? Come on. Let's split up."
"Right," Officer 2 agreed.
The officers walked away in different directions.
§
Boiler Room
Officer 2 walked into the boiler room, using his flashlight to look around. "Hello?" He continued on out of the room. "Hello?"
§
Hallway
Officer 1 was walking down the hall, flashlight in hand. He slowed to a stop, looking cautious.
§
Basement
Officer 2 walked into the basement. "Hello?"
Officer 2 opened a steel door with a bio hazard symbol on it with a message underneath:
Caution
Dangerous
Hazardous
Officer 2 ignored the message, walking inside.
§
Hallway
Officer 1 turned around, going back the way he came.
§
Room
Officer 1 wandered into the room, looking around with the flashlight. He looked behind a dresser, his expression changing. "All right. Come on out."
The flashlight revealed three teenagers sitting in the dark, one a girl, the other two boys.
§
Basement
Officer 2 continued into the hazardous room. His flashlight went out. He shook it, trying to get it to turn back on to no avail.
A door creaked open. Something hidden was watching the officer.
Officer 1 slowly turned toward the door.
§
Outside
Officer 1 watched the teenagers' car drive off. He reached for his police radio. "Kelly, you copy?" Officer 2 was suddenly behind him. Officer 1 turned around, jumping when he saw him. "Jeez. Where the hell you been?"
"In there," Officer 2 answered.
"What was it?" Officer 1 asked. "See anything?"
Officer 2 chuckled. "No."
They got into the police car.
Officer 1 spoke into the car police radio. "This is patrol one four. We are clear and returning to the station."
"Roger," Dispatch told them.
Officer 2's nose started to bleed. He slowly wiped it away.
§
House - Bedroom
Officer 2 walked into the bedroom.
A woman was lying in bed, reading. "Hey." Officer 2 lined up a gun, keys and other police supplies on a chest of drawers. "So, what? You're still not talking to me? Walt! I saw I was sorry about before. How many times do I have to say it?"
Walt picked up his gun.
§
Outside - View of Window
There was a sound of a gunshot. There was a flash of bright light. There was a brief pause. There was another sound of another gunshot. There was another flash of bright light.

Day Two
Morning - Motel Room
Dean was going through John's Journal.
Catty was sitting at the table on her laptop.
Sam was on the phone. "No, Dad was in California last we heard from him. We just thought if he comes to you for munitions, maybe you've seen him in the last few weeks. Just call us if you hear anything. Thanks."
Sam hung up.
"Caleb hasn't heard from him?" Catty asked.
"Nope," Sam answered. "Neither has Jefferson or Pastor Jim. Or Bobby or Ness."
Catty looked at Dean. "What about the journal? Any leads in there?"
Dean shook his head. "No. Same last time I looked. Nothing I can make out." He chuckled. "I love the guy, but I swear, he writes like freaking Yoda."
"Maybe we should call the Feds, file a missing person's," Sam told them.
"We've talked about this," Dean told him. "Dad would be pissed if we put the Feds on his tail."
"I don't care anymore," Sam told them. "After all that happened back in Kansas, I mean, he should have been there. Both of you said so yourselves. Catty, you tried to call him, and nothing."
"I know," Catty told him in annoyance.
"You know, he could be dead for all we know," Sam told them.
Catty looked at Sam. "Don't say that. He's not dead. He's—"
"He's what?" Sam asked. "He's hiding? He's busy?" Catty didn't answer, looking at her laptop. Sam looked at Catty in annoyance. "What are you even doing?" Catty opened her mouth to speak. Sam cut her off. "And do not tell me that you're looking for another job."
Catty rolled her eyes. "Then you're gonna be sadly disappointed."
"Catty—" Sam started.
Catty computer beeped.
Catty looked at the email on the screen.
From: Unavailable
Subject:
Msg; 42, -89
Catty scoffed. "I don't believe it."
"What?" Dean asked.
"It's a—an email," Catty answered. "It's coordinates."
Catty turned back to the laptop, going to Google Maps and looking up where the coordinates would lead them to.
Dean looked at Catty in realization. "You think Dad was emailing us?"
"He's given us coordinates before," Catty told them.
"The man can barely work a toaster, Cat," Sam told her.
"Sam, this is good news," Catty told him. "It means he's okay... or alive."
"Was there an email address?" Dean asked.
"It said 'unknown'," Catty answered.
"Okay, well, where do the coordinates point?" Dean asked.
"That's the interesting part," Catty told them. "Rockford, Illinois."
"Okay, and that's interesting how?" Sam asked.
"I checked the local Rockford paper," Catty told them. "Take a look at this." Sam and Dean stood, stepping closer to get a closer look. Catty clicked on the picture of a deputy. "This cop, Walter Kelly, comes home from his shift, shoots his wife, then puts the gun in his mouth, blows his brains out." Dean sat next to Catty. Sam stood behind them. "Earlier that night, Kelly and his partner responded to a call at the Roosevelt Asylum."
"Okay, I'm not following," Sam told them. "What does this have to do with us?"
Dean sighed in realization and recognition, grabbing John's Journal, flipping through it to find a page. "Dad earmarked the same asylum in the journal. Let's see. Here. 'Seven unconfirmed sightings, two deaths'. Till last week, at least. I think this is where he wants us to go."
Sam scoffed, turning away, stepping away from them, running his hands through his hair. "This is a job. Dad wants us to work a job."
"Maybe we'll meet up with him," Catty told him. "Maybe he's there."
"Maybe he's not," Sam told them. "He could be sending us there by ourselves to hunt this thing."
"Who cares?" Dean asked. "If he wants us there, it's good enough for me."
Dean stood, walking away.
"This doesn't strike either of you as weird?" Sam asked. "The email, the coordinates?"
Dean turned to face him. "Sam. Dad's telling us to go somewhere. We're going."
Sam looked at Catty.
Catty shook her head, closing her laptop, standing, walking past Sam.
§
Night - On the Road
The Impala came driving down a shoulder of the road.
§
Rockford, Illinois - Bar
(Song:) Hey, You - Bachman-Turner Overdrive
Dean approached Officer 1 from the beginning. "You're Daniel Gunderson, right? The cop?"
"Yeah," Daniel answered.
Dean chuckled, sitting down in front of him. "I'm Nigel Tufnel with the Chicago Tribune. Do you mind if I ask a couple questions about your partner?"
"Yeah, I do," Daniel answered. "I'm just trying to have a beer here."
"It won't take long," Dean told him. "I just want to hear the story in your words."
"A week ago, my partner was sitting in that chair, and now he's dead," Daniel told him. "Are you gonna ambush me here?"
"Sorry, but I need to know what happened," Dean told him.
Sam approached them, looking at Dean. "Hey, buddy, how about leaving the poor guy alone, huh?" He grabbed Dean, pushing him into the wall behind him. "The man's an officer! Why don't you show a little respect?"
Catty was sitting on the other side of the bar than them, looking at Sam and Dean. "How about both of you show a little respect to the people around here who are just trying to take the night off? If you have issues, take it outside and not bother anyone else with your problems."
Sam and Dean gave Catty a look, turning around, walking out, pushing past each other on the way toward the door.
Daniel looked at Catty. "You didn't have to do that."
Catty stood, walking closer. "One of them is my cousin, and the other is my best friend's boyfriend. Yeah, I did. They never liked each other. They always make it a point to start something, especially in public. I guess it makes them feel more like men."
Daniel nodded understandingly. "Let me guy you a beer, huh?" Catty nodded. Daniel looked at the bartender. "Two?" The bartender nodded. Catty sat down across from Daniel. "Thanks. Saved me having to stop the fight and arresting them off of the job."
Catty smiled.
(Song Ends)
§
Outside - Parking Lot
Dean and Sam were leaning against the Impala, waiting.
Catty walked outside, toward them.
"You really put in that whole 'Super Girl to the Rescue' thing to stop the 'fight' that was about to 'start' before coming in hard with the flirting there, Catty," Dean told her.
"I had to sell it, didn't I?" Catty replied. "It's method acting."
"Huh?" Sam asked.
"Never mind," Catty told them, standing next to Dean at the driver's side back seat door, leaning froward against the car. "Still. Can't there be any hot guys on the job that I'm not related to?"
Sam and Dean rolled their eyes.
Catty smirked.
"What did you find out from Gunderson?" Sam asked.
"So, Walter Kelly was a good cop," Catty told them. "Head of his class, even-keeled. He had a bright future ahead of him."
"What about at home?" Dean asked.
"He and his wife had a few fights like everybody," Catty answered. "But it was mostly smooth sailing. They were even talking about having kids."
"Either Kelly had some crazy waiting to bust out, or something else did it to him," Dean concluded.
Catty nodded. "Right."
"What did Gunderson tell you about the asylum?" Sam asked.
Catty scoffed, smirking. "A lot."
§
Day Three
Morning - Roosevelt Asylum - Outside
Sam and Dean climbed over the chain link fence to get within property lines.
Catty climbed up to the top.
"Come on, Buffy," Dean told her.
"Hilarious, Dean," Catty told him sarcastically, grabbing the top of the fence, flipping the rest of her over the top, falling down to the ground below, landing on her feet lightly. "I wish it was that easy to jump over fences."
They walked up the stone steps leading into the asylum.
There was a sign on the door nearby.
Roosevelt Asylum
Est. 1872
KEEP OUT
Condemned building
No entry allowed
Violators prosecuted
§
Inside
Sam, Dean and Catty walked inside.
"So, apparently, the cops chased the kids here, into the South Wing," Catty told them.
"South Wing, huh?" Dean asked, pulling out John's journal. "Wait a second." He flipped through the journal. "South Wing, South Wing. '1972, three kids broke into the South Wing. Only one survived.' The way he tells it, one of his friends went nuts and started lighting up the place."
"So, whatever's going on, South Wing seems like the heart of it," Sam told them.
"But if kids are spelunking the asylum, why aren't there a ton more deaths?" Dean asked.
Catty looked at the broken chains over the doors to the South Wing. "It looks like the doors are usually chained. They could have been chained up for years."
Catty walked closer to the doors.
"Yeah, to keep people out," Sam told them. "Or to keep something in."
Catty opened the doors, walking in.
Sam and Dean followed.
§
South Wing - Hallway
Dean looked at Sam. "Let me know if you see any dead people, Haley Joel."
"Dean, enough," Catty told him.
Dean chuckled, taking out the EMF. "I'm serious. Sam, you've got to be careful. Ghosts are attracted to that ESP thing you got."
"I told you, it's not ESP," Sam told them. "I just have strange vibes sometimes, weird dreams."
"Yeah, whatever," Dean told him. "Don't ask, don't tell."
"Did you get any reading on that thing or not?" Sam asked.
"No," Dean answered. "Of course, it doesn't mean nobody's home."
"Spirits can't appear during certain hours," Sam agreed.
"The freaks come out at night," Catty told them.
"Hey, Catty, who do you think is a hotter psychic?" Dean asked. "Patricia Arquette, Jennifer Love Hewitt, or Sam Winchester?"
Sam pushed Dean further down the hall.
Catty laughed, following them.
§
Room
Sam, Catty and Dean walked into a room that looked as if it was meant for torture of some kind, used for research.
Dean whistled, putting the EMF away, looking around. "God. Electroshock, lobotomies. They did some twisted stuff to these people, kind of like my man Jack in 'Cuckoo's Nest'. So what do you think? Ghosts are possessing people?"
"Maybe," Catty answered. "Maybe it's more like Amityville or the Smurl Haunting."
"Ah, Spirits driving them insane, kind of like my man Jack in 'The Shining'," Dean told them, looking away.
"Dean..." Sam trailed off. "Catty... When are we going to talk about it?"
"Talk about what?" Catty asked.
"About the fact that Dad's not here," Sam answered.
"Oh, uh, let's see," Catty told them. "Never."
"I'm being serious, Catty," Sam told her.
"So am I, Sam," Catty told him.
"He sent us here," Dean told them. "He obviously wants us here. We'll just have to pick up the search later."
"It doesn't matter what he wants," Sam told them.
"Like hell it doesn't," Dean told him.
"See, those attitudes right there, that is why I always got the extra cookie," Catty told them.
"Dad could be in trouble," Sam told them. "We should be looking for him. We deserve some answers. This is our family."
"I understand that, Sam, but he's given you, me and Catty an order," Dean told him.
"So what Dean, we've got to always follow Dad's orders?" Sam asked.
"Of course we do," Dean told him.
"All right, shut up, both of you," Catty told them.
Sam looked at her. "You know what? I notice that you never give your opinions in these little discussions. What are you thinking, Catty?"
Dean turned to face Catty, giving her the same look that Sam was.
"I know what you're trying to do," Catty told them.
"And what is that?" Sam asked.
"You're trying to get me to pick a side," Catty answered. "And I'm not gonna pick a side. We do our job, and then we'll look for Dad. Does that sound good to everybody? Yeah?" She didn't wait for an answer. "Good." She turned around, looking at a name plague on the table in front of her. "Sanford Ellicott. You know what we got to do? We've got to find out more about the South Wing." She turned to face Sam and Dean. "See if something happened there."
Catty pushed the name plague into Dean's chest, walking past them, out of the room.
Sam and Dean followed.
§
Dr. James Ellicott, Clinical Psychiatry - Waiting Room
Sam was sitting on a couch, flicking there a magazine.
A man walked into the open door frame. "Sam Winchester?"
"That's me," Sam told him.
"Come on in," the man told him.
Sam stood, walking toward him.
§
Office
The man led Sam inside, sitting down at his desk.
Sam sat down in a chair. "Thanks again for seeing me last minute." He looked around the room. "Dr... Ellicott. Ellicott, that name. Wasn't there a... a Dr. Sanford Ellicott? Yeah, he was a chief psychiatrist somewhere."
"My father was chief of staff at the old Roosevelt Asylum," James Ellicott told him. "How did you know?"
"Ah, well, I'm sort of a... local history buff," Sam told him. "Hey, wasn't there an incident of something? In the hospital, I guess. In the South Wing, right?"
"We're on your dollar, Sam," James told him. "We're here to talk about you."
"Oh, okay," Sam told him. "Yeah, yeah. Sure."
"So, how's things?" James asked.
"Ah, things are good, doctor," Sam told him.
"Good," James told him. "What have you been doing?"
"Ah, same old," Sam told him. "I've just been on a... on a road trip with my brother Dean and sister Catty."
"Was that fun?" James asked.
Sam hesitated. "Loads. Um, you know, we, ah... we... met... a lot of... interesting people. Did a lot of, uh, interesting things. Ah, you know? What was it exactly that happened in the South Wing? I forget."
"Look, if you're a local history buff, you know all about the Roosevelt riot," James told him.
"The riot," Sam repeated. "Well, no. I know. I'm just curious."
"Sam, let's cut the bull, shall we?" James asked. "You're avoiding the subject."
"What subject?" Sam asked.
"You," James answered. "Now I'll make you a deal. I'll tell you all about the Roosevelt riot, if you tell me something honest about yourself. Like, uh, this brother and sister you're road tripping with. How do you feel about Dean and Catty?"
Sam looked nervous.
§
Outside
Dean and Catty were standing outside, waiting.
Sam walked outside.
"Dude, you were in there forever," Catty told him. "What the hell were you talking about?"
"Just the hospital, you know," Sam told them.
Sam, Dean and Catty started to walk toward the Impala.
"And?" Catty asked.
"And the South Wing, it's where they housed the real head cases," Sam answered. "The psychotics, the criminally insane."
"Sounds cozy," Dean told them.
"And one night in '64, they rioted, attacked the staff, attacked each other," Sam explained.
"So, what?" Catty asked. "The patients took over the asylum?"
"Apparently," Sam answered.
"Any deaths?" Catty asked.
"Some patients, some staff," Sam answered. They stopped next to the Impala. "I guess it was pretty gory. Some of the bodies were never even recovered, including our chief of staff, Ellicott."
"What do you mean, 'never recovered'?" Dean asked.
"Cops scoured every inch of the place, but I guess the patients must have stuffed the bodies somewhere hidden," Sam answered.
Catty tilted her head. "That's grim."
"Yeah," Dean agreed.
"So they transferred all the surviving patients and shut down the hospital for good," Sam finished.
"All right, so, to sum it up, we've got a bunch of violent deaths and unrecovered bodies," Catty told them.
"Which could mean a bunch of angry Spirits," Dean told them.
"Good times," Catty said sarcastically. "Let's check out the hospital tonight."
They got into the Impala.
§
Night - Roosevelt Asylum - South Wing
A blonde teenage girl and a brunette teenage boy walked into the South Wing with flashlights.
"Check this out," the guy told her. "Creepy... yet terrifying."
"I thought we were going to a movie," the girl told him.
"This is better," the guy told her. "It's like we're in a movie."
"I can't believe you call this a date," the girl told him.
"Come on," the guy told her. "It'll be fun. Let's look around. Come on." They walked down the hall. The guy jumped, turning around. "What's that?" The girl turned around in fear. The guy poked the girl. The girl jumped, hitting the guy. The guy laughed. "Hey, look. Come on. Let's check it out."
"I... don't want to," the girl told him. "Let's just go."
"Come on," the guy told her. He realized how freaked out she was. "Okay. Okay, you can wit here."
The guy started to walk away.
"W—Gavin," the girl told him. "No."
"I'm just gonna be a minute," Gavin told her. "Nothing's gonna get you. I promise."
§
Room
Gavin walked into the next room alone.
The door slammed closed behind him.
Gavin looked at the door, thinking it had been the girl, smiling, continuing on.
In the doorway behind Gavin, there a blond female figure in the shadows.
Gavin's flashlight failed. He shook it, trying to get it back on to no avail. "Damn it." He turned around to see the woman. "Hey, sweetie. Couldn't take it, huh?"
The woman walked closer, putting her hands on either of his cheeks. "Hey."
The woman kissed Gavin. Gavin started to return it.
His girl called from the distance. "Gavin? Gavin, where are you?"
Gavin pulled away from the woman, gasping, pushing her away.
The woman stepped back into the light the windows allowed in, revealing that her face was utterly destroyed and deformed.
Gavin breathed heavily, starting to freak out.
§
South Wing - Hallway
Catty, Sam and Dean walked in.
Catty handed a flashlight to Sam, already having one of her own. She had a bag of weapons over her shoulder, holding a shotgun in her hands.
Dean pulled out the EMF reader.
Sam had a video camera.
"Getting readings?" Catty asked.
"Yeah, big time," Dean answered.
"This place is orbing like crazy," Sam told them.
Catty looked at the night vision on the camera, which had several spots that shouldn't have been there. "There's probably multiple Spirits out and about."
"And if these unrecovered bodies are causing the haunting..." Sam trailed off.
"We got to find them and burn them," Catty finished. "Just be careful, though. The only thing that makes me more nervous than a pissed off Spirit is a pissed off Spirit of a psycho killer."
They started to walk forward. Hearing something behind them, they turned to face the other end of the hall to see that there was no one there.
Catty, Sam and Dean turned back forward, walking down the hall.
There was a crazed-looking bald man strapped into straitjacket in the corner.
§
Research/Torture Room
Catty, Sam and Dean walked back to the room that they had been earlier, splitting up to look around.
Sam saw an old woman through the video lens, white haired, one eye bleeding and hanging out, walking toward him. "Catty! Dean!" Catty and Dean ran closer. "Shotgun!"
Dean rummaged through the weapon bag.
Catty still had her shotgun. "Sam, get down!"
Sam ducked.
Catty shot the Ghost in the head with the rock salt shells, making it disappear.
Sam sighed, standing. "That was weird."
"Yeah, you're telling me," Dean told him.
Catty picked up the bag.
§
Hallway
Sam, Catty and Dean walked down the hall.
"No, I mean, it was weird that she didn't attack me," Sam told them.
"It looked pretty aggro from where I was standing," Dean told him.
"She didn't hurt me," Sam told them. "She didn't even try. So if she didn't want to hurt me, then what did she want?"
They walked around a corner, hearing whimpering, looking toward an over-turned table.
Sam pointed his flashlight at the table.
Dean held the EMF.
Catty raised the shot gun.
They walked forward.
Sam pulled down the table to reveal the blonde teenage girl.
The girl turned toward them, screaming.
Catty lowered her gun. "It's all right. We're not going to hurt you. It's okay." The girl stood. "What's your name?"
"Katherine," the girl answered.
"I'm Catty," Catty told her. "This is Sam and Dean."
"What are you doing here?" Dean asked.
"Um, my boyfriend, Gavin..." Katherine trailed off.
"Is he here?" Sam asked.
"Somewhere," Katherine answered. Dean looked away in annoyance. "He thought it would be fun, try and see some Ghosts. I thought it was all just... you know... pretend." Katherine wrapped her cloth jacket around her more tightly. "I've seen things. I heard Gavin scream, and—"
"All right, Katherine, come on," Dean told her. "Catty's gonna get you out of here." Catty raised her eyebrows at him. "Then we're gonna find your boyfriend."
"No, no," Katherine told them. "I'm not gonna leave without Gavin. I'm coming with you."
"It's no joke around here," Dean told her. "It's dangerous."
"That's why I've got to find him," Katherine told them.
"All right," Catty told them. "I guess we're gonna split up, then." She nodded for Katherine to follow her. "Let's go."
Catty and Katherine walked one direction.
Sam and Dean walked in the other.
§
Hallway 1
Sam and Dean were wandering around.
Dean had the weapons bag.
Sam had the video camera. "Gavin? Gavin!"
"Shh," Dean told him. "You'll bring them all down on us."
Sam gave Dean a look.
Dean walked along without responding.
Sam followed him.
§
Hallway 2
Catty and Katherine were wandering around.
Catty had the salt shell shotgun.
"Gavin!" Katherine called. "Gavin!"
"I've got a question for you," Catty told her, turning to face Katherine, making her stop. "You've seen a lot of horror movies, yeah?"
"I guess so," Katherine answered.
"Do me a favor," Catty told her. "You know what? No. Scratch that. Do yourself a favor. Next time you see one, pay attention. When someone says a place is haunted, don't go in."
Catty turned around, leading the way down the hall again.
Katherine followed.
A dark shape moved across the inside of the window.
§
Room
Sam and Dean walked inside cautiously, looking around.
Sam found Gavin unconscious on the floor, kneeling next to him, shaking him.
Gavin woke, freaking out.
"Hey, Gavin," Sam told him. "It's okay. We're here to help."
"Who are you?" Gavin asked.
"My name is Dean," Dean answered. "That's Sam. Uh, we found your girlfriend."
Sam and Gavin stood.
"Katherine?" Gavin asked. "Is she all right?"
"Yeah," Dean answered. "She's with our sister Catty, worried about you. Are you okay?"
"I was running," Gavin told them. "I think I fell."
"You were running from what?" Dean asked.
"There was... there was this girl," Gavin told them. "Her face.. it was all messed up."
"Okay, listen," Sam told him. "Did this girl... did she try to hurt you?"
"What?" Gavin asked. "No, she... uh..."
"She what?" Dean asked.
"She... kissed me," Gavin answered.
"Uh, um, but... but she didn't hurt you, physically?" Sam asked.
"Dude, she kissed me," Gavin told him. "I'm scarred for life."
"Well, trust me, it could have been worse," Dean told him. "Now, do you remember anything else?"
"She, uh..." Gavin trailed off. "Actually, she tried to whisper something in my ear."
"What?" Sam asked.
"I don't know," Gavin told them. "I ran like hell."
§
Hallway
Katherine and Catty were walking down another hallway.
Catty was leading the way with her flashlight.
The light faded.
Catty shook it, trying to get it to work. "You son of a bitch." She put her flashlight away. "It's all right. I've got a lighter."
Catty pulled out her lighter, lighting it.
"Ow," Katherine told her. "You're hurting my arm."
Catty turned to face Katherine. "What are you talking about?"
Katherine looked at Catty, realizing that she wasn't touching her, scared.
Catty lowered the lighter to show that a Ghost's hand was gripping Katherine's arm tightly.
The Ghost pulled Katherine into the room next over, making her scream, slamming the door closed.
Catty ran up to the door. "Katherine!"
Catty tried to pull the door open, but it wouldn't budge.
"Let me out, please!" Katherine called.
"Katherine!" Catty called, trying to open the door.
The door still wouldn't open.
§
Catty was still trying to pull the door open with all her strength.
§
Room
Katherine was banging on the door, crying. "Let me out! Please!"
§
Hallway
Catty continued to try to open the door to no avail. "Katherine, hang on!"
Catty picked up a crow bar, banging it repeatedly into the door to try to open it.
§
Room
Katherine backed away from the door.
A male Ghost was standing behind her.
Katherine turned around.
The Ghost disappeared before she saw him.
Katherine looked around the otherwise empty room.
§
Hallway
Catty was no longer banging the crow bar against the door. She was trying to use it to pry the door open, but even that didn't work.
§
Room
Katherine was still looking around.
The male Ghost appeared behind her.
Katherine slowly turned around to see him, backing away, screaming.
The Ghost appeared behind her.
Katherine turned to face him, screaming.
§
Hallway
Sam, Dean and Gavin ran toward Catty.
"What's going on?" Dean asked.
Catty looked toward them, still trying to get the door open. "She's inside with one of them."
§
Room
Katherine backed away against the wall and the door, her hands against both of them to keep her standing. "Help me! Get me out of here!"
The Ghost stalked closer to Katherine.
§
Hallway
Gavin looked at the door but stayed out of the way. "Katherine!"
Catty was still trying to open the door with the crowbar.
"Katherine, it's not gonna hurt you," Sam told her. "Listen to me. You have to face it. You have to calm down."
Catty looked at Sam in confusion. "She's got to what?"
§
Room
Katherine had her back against the wall, trying to stay away from the Ghost, just as confused at Catty was. "I have to what?"
§
Hallway
Dean spoke through the door, looking at Catty, explaining to her and Katherine. "The Spirits aren't trying to hurt us. They're trying to communicate. You've got to listen to it. You've got to face it."
§
Room
The Ghost stalked closer to Katherine.
Katherine turned her head away in fear. "You face it!"
§
Hallway
Dean spoke through the door. "It's the only way you're gonna get out of there."
"No!" Katherine told them.
"Look at it," Sam told her. "That's all. Come on. You can do it."
§
Room
Katherine slowly turned her head to look at the deformed Ghost's face, her back still pressed against the wall.
The Ghost leaned forward to whisper into Katherine's ear.
§
Hallway
Gavin was still worried about her. "Katherine?"
Catty looked at Sam and Dean. "I hope you two are right about this."
"Yeah, me, too," Sam told them.
Dean nodded.
The door unlocked.
Catty, Dean, Sam and Gavin all backed away.
The door opened.
Katherine was standing behind it, completely fine.
"Oh, Katherine," Gavin said in relief, pulling her closer.
Sam, Dean and Catty walked into the room, but the Ghost was already gone. They stepped into the hall.
"137," Katherine told them.
"Sorry?" Dean asked.
"It whispered in my ear, '137'," Katherine answered.
Sam, Dean and Catty looked at each other. "Room number."
Catty knelt next to the bag, preparing things, putting the crow bar away.
Sam and Dean knelt next to Catty.
"So, if these Spirits aren't trying to hurt anyone..." Dean trailed off.
"Then what are they trying to do?" Catty finished.
"Maybe that's what they've been trying to tell us," Sam told them.
"I guess we'll find out," Catty told them. "All right." They stood, turning to face Katherine and Gavin. "So, now, you guys ready to leave this place?"
"That's an understatement," Katherine told them.
"Okay," Dean told them. "Catty, get them out of here. Sam and I are gonna go find room 137. Let's split up. It'll be faster that way."
Sam and Dean walked away in opposite directions.
§
Another Hallway
Catty led Gavin and Katherine toward the exit.
"Catty, how do you guys know about all this Ghost stuff?" Katherine asked.
"It's kind of our job," Catty answered.
"Why would anyone want a job like that?" Katherine asked.
Catty chuckled. "I had a crappy guidance counselor."
"And Sam and Dean?" Katherine asked. "Who are they?"
"My brothers," Catty answered.
"They're bossy," Katherine told her.
Catty scoffed. "Tell me about it."
§
Hallway
Dean found room 137.
§
Room 137
Dean pushed the door open, using his weight to push aside the broken furniture blocking it.
The room was a mess, filing cabinets pushed over, papers everywhere, the walls stained.
Dean shone his flashlight around, flicking through some folders lying in a cabinet. He continued to look.
§
Hallway
Catty, Gavin and Katherine made it into the hallway leading to the main room of the asylum.
Catty tried to open it, but it didn't budge. She sighed, nodding awkwardly. "All right. I think we have a little problem."
"Let's break it down," Gavin told her.
"Dude, I tried to break down the door to the room that a Ghost was holding your girlfriend captive," Catty told him. "If it didn't work then, I'm pretty sure it won't work now."
"Then a window," Gavin told her.
"They're barred," Katherine told him.
"Well, how are we supposed to get out?" Gavin asked.
"That's the point," Catty told them. "We're not. There's something in here. It doesn't want us to leave."
"Those patients," Katherine told them.
"No," Catty answered. "Something else."
§
Hallway
Sam was looking everywhere. His phone rang. He pulled it out to answer. "Hey."
Dean's voice was on the other end of the line. Sam could barely hear him due to the bad connection. "Sam, it's me. I see it. It's coming at me."
"Where are you?" Sam asked.
"I'm in the basement," Dean told him. "Hurry up!"
"I'm on my way," Sam told him.
Sam hung up, walking down the hallway quickly.
§
Room 137
Dean was still searching the room. He found a loose panel, prying it off, finding a satchel full of papers. "This is why I get paid the big bucks."
Dean started to look through a journal with many notes and hand-drawn pictures of medical instruments. He pulled up a chair, starting to read, looking concerned.
After a moment, there was a very loud noise.
Dean looked up quickly, but didn't see anything.
§
Hallway
Gavin and Katherine were still standing at the door leading to the lobby.
Catty walked toward them. "All right. I've looked everywhere. There's no other way out."
"What the hell are we gonna do?" Gavin asked.
"For starters, we're not gonna panic," Catty answered.
"Why the hell not?" Gavin asked.
They heard a noise in the distance, like a metal door slamming closed, looking toward it in confusion.
"Damn it," Catty told them. She looked at Katherine and Gavin. "All right, my brothers need help against this thing. If it has any brains or a thrill for a challenge, it'll come after us. Can either of you handle a shotgun?"
Gavin stammered. "What? No!"
"I can," Katherine told them. Catty and Gavin looked at her in surprise. "My dad took me skeet shooting a couple times."
"All right, here," Catty told her, handing Katherine the shotgun in her hand. "It's loaded with rock salt. Now, it might not kill a Spirit, but it will repel it, so if you see something, shoot."
"Okay," Katherine told her.
"'Kay," Catty told them, turning around, walking away.
Katherine sighed, cocking the gun.
§
Basement
Sam was searching through the basement. "Dean?" His flashlight flickered, fading. He shook it, tapping it, trying to get it to work. A door behind him swung open. Sam raised his shotgun, approaching carefully. "Dean?"
A shadow moved behind a ragged curtain, drawing his attention.
Sam pulled the curtain back, revealing that there was no one there. He turned around.
A beaten up man with ragged hair and clothes grabbing Sam's face. His hands started to glow. "Don't be afraid. I'm going to make you all better."
§
Room 137
Catty walked inside with her flashlight, looking at all of the papers all over the desk, noticing the patient journal. "All work and no play makes Dr. Ellicott a very dull boy."
Catty started to look it over, looking over everything Dean had went through.
§
Hallway
Gavin was pacing.
Katherine was kneeling against the wall with her back to the wall, holding the shotgun. She sighed. "Hey, Gavin?"
Gavin walked closer, sitting down next to Katherine. "Yeah?"
"If we make it out of here alive... we are so breaking up," Katherine told him. Gavin didn't look surprised. They heard a noise around the corner, both standing. Katherine raised the shotgun. "Did you hear that?"
"Something's coming," Gavin told her.
Dean walked around the corner.
Katherine shot toward him, nearly hitting him.
Dean ducked around the corner, back against the wall to make her miss. "Damn it. Damn it, don't shoot! It's me!"
"Sorry!" Katherine told him. "Sorry."
"Son of a bitch," Dean told them, stepping around the corner, looking at the marks left in the wall. "What are you still doing here?"
"We can't leave," Gavin answered.
"All right, where's Catty?" Dean asked.
"She went looking for you guys," Gavin answered.
"And where's Sam?" Dean asked.
"We don't know," Katherine told him. "Last time we saw him, we were with you. But we heard something by the basement."
"Basement, huh?" Dean asked. He looked around, grabbing some extra weapons. "All right. Watch yourselves. And watch out for us."
Dean walked away, leaving.
§
Basement
Dean was walking along, looking. "Sammy? Sam, you down here? Sam? Sam!" He turned around, seeing Sam, jumping back, raising his shotgun. When he realized it was Sam, he lowered the shotgun. "Man, answer me when I'm calling you! You all right?"
Sam sounded numb. "Yeah. I'm fine. I thought you called my cell. But it wasn't you. I think something lured me down here."
"I think I know who," Dean told him. "Dr. Sanford Ellicot. That's what the Spirits have been trying to tell us. You haven't see him, have you?"
Sam shook his head. "No. How do you know it was him?'
"'Cause I found his log book," Dean answered. "Apparently, he was experimenting on his patients, awful stuff. Makes lobotomies look like a couple of Aspirin."
"But it was the patients who rioted," Sam told him.
"Yeah," Dean agreed. "They were rioting against the doctor. Dr. Ellicott was working on some sort of, like, extreme rage therapy. He thought that if he could get his patients to vent their anger, then they would be cured of it. Instead, it only made them worse and worse and angrier and angrier. So, I'm thinking, what if his Spirit is doing the same thing? To the cop. To the kids in the '70s. Making them so angry they become homicidal. Come on. We gotta find his bones and torch them."
"How?" Sam asked. "The police never found his body."
"The log book said he had some sort of hidden procedure room down here somewhere where he'd work on his patients," Dean explained. "So, if I was a patient, I'd drag his ass down here, do a little work on him myself."
"I don't know," Sam told him. "It sounds kind of..."
"Crazy?" Dean finished.
"Yeah," Sam answered.
"Yeah," Dean agreed. "Exactly."
Dean opened another door, looking inside, gesturing for Sam to follow him, walking inside.
Sam looked at Dean with a stealthy, sly, angry look.
§
Room
They walked into the room where Sanford had gotten to Sam.
"I told you I looked everywhere," Sam told him. "I didn't find a hidden room."
"Well, that's why they call it hidden," Dean told him. There was a rush of wind noise. 'You hear that?"
"What?" Sam asked.
Dean looked around, kneeling down next to the wall, holding his hand out. "There's a door here."
Sam pointed his salt shell shotgun at him. "Dean." Dean looked at him. A trickle of blood dripped from Sam's nose. "Step back from the door."
Dean stood, looking from the gun to Sam. "Sam, put the gun down."
"Is that an order?" Sam asked.
"Nah, it's more of a friendly request," Dean answered.
Sam raised the gun to point at Dean's chest. "'Cause I'm getting pretty tired of taking your orders. I don't know how in hell Catty has done it for so long."
"I knew it," Dean told him. "Ellicott did something to you."
"For once in your life, just shut your mouth," Sam told him.
"What are you gonna do, Sam?" Dean asked. "Gun's filled with rock salt. It's not gonna kill me."
Sam shot Dean in the chest.
The shot blasted Dean backward through the hidden door, making it shatter and him to fall to the floor inside the hidden room.
"No," Sam agreed. "But it will hurt like hell."
§
Basement Hallway
Catty walked along the dark, deserted hallway of the basement, looking around with her flashlight. "Sammy? Dean. You here? Guys!"
There was no answer.
Dr. Ellicott walked across the hall behind her.
Catty sensed him, turning around, pointing the flashlight down the hall.
Ellicott had disappeared.
Catty turned around, continuing to walk along.
Ellicott was hiding behind a corner, waiting.
§
Hidden Room
Dean laid on the floor, coming to, gasping for breath. "Sam!" Sam walked closer, standing over him. "We gotta burn Ellicott's bones and all this will be over, and you'll be back to normal."
"I am normal," Sam told him. "I'm just telling the truth for the first time. I mean, why are we even here? 'Cause you're following Dad's orders like a good little solider? Because you always do what he says without question? Are you that desperate for his approval?"
"This isn't you talking, Sam," Dean told him.
"That's the difference between you and me," Sam told him. "I have a mind of my own. I'm not pathetic, like you. Hell, even if Catty's the good child, Daddy's little angel, she still thinks for herself. I remember. When Catty thought Dad's plans were gonna get people hurt, she's the one that always stepped in. She has more of a heart than any of us. She fought harder than me sometimes. Which is more than you can say for yourself."
"So, what are you gonna do, huh?" Dean asked. "Are you gonna kill me?"
"You know what?" Sam asked. "I am sick of doing what you tell me to do. We're no closer to finding Dad today than we were six months ago."
"Well, then, here," Dean told him. "Let me make it easier for you." He held his handheld gun toward Sam. "Come on. Take it. Real bullets are gonna work a hell of a lot better than rock salt." Sam hesitated. "Take it." Sam took the gun, pointing the gun at Dean's head. "You hate me that much? You think you can kill your own brother? Then go ahead. Pull the trigger. Do it!"
Sam was about to pull the trigger.
Catty arrived next to Sam, grabbing the gun, pointing it at the ceiling to make the shot fire to the ceiling. "Hi." She kneed Sam in the stomach, making him let go of the gun, using the butt of the gun to hit Sam on the head hard enough to make him fall unconscious to the floor. "Sorry, Sammy."
"Took you long enough, Cat," Dean told her.
"Right, and that's exactly what you say to the sister who just saved your life from your brother, Dean," Catty told him sarcastically, offering Dean a hand.
Dean took it, letting her help him up. "How'd you even know we'd be down here?"
"I found room 137," Catty answered. "Dr. Feel Good wasn't so good after all. This is the hidden room with the experiments?" Dean nodded. Catty looked around, holding her knife ready. Dean held the shotgun. They searched the room for the remains. "Now, if I was an insane psychotic mental patient with raging anger issues, where would I hide the body of the doctor that tortured me?" Catty shone her flashlight onto a cabinet that was locked. "Dean." Dean turned to face her. Catty knelt in front of the cabinet, kicking off the lock, opening it to reveal the reeking corpse of Dr. Ellicott, groaning at the sight and smell. "Oh, that's just gross." Catty put the bag down, pulling out the rock salt. Dean walked closer, keeping an eye around them. Catty poured the rock salt over the corpse. "Soak it up."
Catty poured the gasoline from a bottle over the corpse.
The flashlight's light started to flicker.
"Cat," Dean told her to get her attention. Ellicott appeared behind her. "Catty!"
Catty turned to look at Ellicott.
Dean raised a gun toward them, trying to shoot Ellicott.
A table rolled toward Dean, pinning him to the wall, making him drop the gun.
Ellicott grabbed Catty's head. "Don't be afraid." His hands started to glow, starting to do to her what he did to Sam. "I'm going to help you. I'm going to make you all better."
Dean pushed the table away from him, grabbing the lighter from the floor, lighting it, throwing it onto the corpse, setting it ablaze.
Ellicott let Catty go, looking into the flames.
Catty slid away from him, into the wall behind her quickly, breathing heavily.
Ellicott hardened into dust, falling to the floor, crumbling, dead.
Dean knelt next to Catty. "Did you infect you at all, or did his death make it wear off?"
"I think you're safe," Catty told him. Sam woke up, looking at them. "You're not gonna try and kill us, are you?"
"No," Sam answered.
Catty nodded. "Good. 'Cause that would be awkward."
§
Day Four
Morning - Outside
Sam, Dean and Catty were standing outside of the asylum, talking to Gavin and Katherine.
"Thanks, guys," Katherine told them.
"Yeah, thanks," Gavin told them.
"No more haunted asylums, okay?" Catty asked.
Gavin and Katherine nodded, turning around, walking toward their car.
Sam, Dean and Catty turned toward the Impala.
"Hey, Dean, I'm sorry, man," Sam told him. "I said some awful things back there."
"You remember all that?" Dean asked.
"Yeah," Sam answered. "It's like I couldn't control it, but I didn't mean it. Any of it."
"You didn't, huh?" Dean asked.
"No," Sam answered. "Of course, not."
"Do we need to talk about this?" Catty asked.
"No, no," Dean answered. "I'm not really in the sharing and caring kind of mood. I just want to get some sleep."
They got into the Impala, driving away.
§
Motel Room
Sam and Dean were asleep in their side of the joined room.
The double doors to the other side of the room were closed.
§
Catty's Side of the Room
Catty was sleeping in her side of the joined room.
Her phone was on the nightstand next to the window leading to the fire escape. It began to ring.
Catty stirred awake tiredly, still half asleep, reaching over to pick up her phone, looking at the Caller ID.
Unknown
Catty answered tiredly. "Hello?" She sat up instantly at the sound of the voice on the other line, alert, confused and surprised. "Dad?"
