chapter 15 - Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid

Outfits in the external link

THEN

After dark, the Impala drove down the road.

From 5.02 "Good God, Y'All!", in the gas station, Catty pushed Sam away just as Man 2 swung the baseball bat toward them twice. Sam fell to the floor. Man 2 swung the baseball bat toward Catty. Catty caught it with one arm, stabbing him in the neck with her knife, killing him, taking it out, letting him fall to the floor.

From 5.03 "Free to Be You and Me", in the Vampire barn, a Vampire ran toward Ness. Ness grabbed him, turning around, pushing him into the wall nearby, punching him in the face, swinging the blade toward him. The Vampire ducked, tackling Ness to the ground. Ness elbowed him in the face, making him let go, rolling him to the ground, straddling him to the ground, raising the blade over her head, stabbing it down into his neck, decapitating him, killing him.

Pastor: (voice over from 5.02 Good God, Y'All!) "Are you saying that this is the... Apocalypse?"

From 5.02 "Good God, Y'All!", in the church's basement, Sam looked at the pastor. "And these specific omens, they're prelude to what?"

"The Four Horsemen," the pastor answered.

"What which one rides the red horse?" Sam asked.

From 5.02 "Good God, Y'All!", in the street, War walked toward the cherry red Mustang, looking over his shoulder to see nothing.

Pastor: (voice over from 5.02 Good God, Y'All!) "War."

From 5.14 "My Bloody Valentine", in Biggerson's Restaurant, people started to eat ravenously. A woman poured a bottle of pills into her mouth. A man was drinking thirstily. A couple were kissing hungrily. A man was eating ravenously.

Castiel: (voice over from 5.14 My Bloody Valentine) "This town is suffering from Famine."

From 5.14 "My Bloody Valentine", in the motel room, Sam looked at Castiel. "A--as in the Horseman?"

"Great," Catty told them sarcastically.

From 5.14 "My Bloody Valentine", in the alley, Sam had the Demon pushed against the brick wall, using Catty's Knife to cut across his cheek, making the wound flash with red, making him groan a scream.

From 5.10 "Abandon All Hope...", in the Singer House, Bobby explained to Sam, Dean, Catty and Ness through the radio. "The Angel of Death must be brought into this world..."

From 5.10 "Abandon All Hope...", at William Jasper's Farm's Field, one by one, the Demons flashed gold, all of them falling, dead.

Ness, Dean, Sam and Catty watched in horror.

Bobby: (voice over from 5.10 Abandon All Hope) "Through a place of awful carnage."

From 5.10 "Abandon All Hope...", at William Jasper's Farm's Field, something rose from underneath the ground, unseen.

Lucifer smiled. "Oh, hello, Death."

From 2.02 "Everybody Loves a Clown", at the Roadhouse, Dean and Ness were sitting at the bar. Dean noticed Ness' Necklace.

Ness took the pendant, opening it to reveal an old picture of Bobby, a blonde woman and a little brunette girl, presumably a Young Ness, with the initials K.S. carved into the other side. "Karen Singer. My mom."

Dean nodded. "What happened to her?"

Ness looked down. "Something that shouldn't happen to anyone."

From 2.14 "Born Under a Bad Sign", at TJz, Sam/Meg ran a blade across Ness' cheek, looking at Catty, both who were tied to posts. "See, a Demon got into Nessie's mommy when she was really little. And her mom was gonna skin Ness alive in front of her daddy. But Bobby stabbed her over and over and over again. Demon leaves, but Mommy stays dead." He/she said the next sentence in a quiet singsong voice, looking at Ness tauntingly. "Daddy stabbed Mommy to save Nessie."

3.10 "Dream a Little Dream of Me", in Bobby's Mind Space, in the Singer House, Young Ness looked behind Ness, hiding behind Bobby in fear.

Ness turned around to see Karen Singer, looking the same as before. She looked at Karen in shock, unable to look away, her voice barely above a whisper. "Mom?"

From 5.11 "Catty, Interrupted", in the hospital's hallway, Catty looked at Eric. "It's the end of the world. And if I don't stop it and save everyone, then no one will, and we all die."

From 5.10 "Abandon All Hope...", outside the hardware store, the hardware store exploded, glass shattering, fire spreading, killing everyone and everything inside.  Across the street, Catty, Sam, Dean and Ness couldn't help but stop, looking back into the flames to watch it blow, knowing that Ellen and Jo were gone, breathing heavily, mourning their loss silently, numbly. Ness was crying silently, looking more angry than sad, but despaired all the same.

From 5.10 "Abandon All Hope..." at William Jasper's Farm's Field, Dean and Catty stood on either side of Sam. They were all aiming shotguns at Lucifer. Ness stood behind Lucifer, using the Colt to shoot Lucifer in the back of the head. Lucifer fell to the ground, his wound sparking. Ness circled around Lucifer to stand next to Dean. Lucifer stood. Ness, Dean, Sam and Catty looked at him in horror.

From 5.02 "Good God, Y'All!", in the street, Sam and Dean grabbed either of War's arms, restraining him. Ness and Catty helped push War against the Mustang, pinning him. Ness used Catty's Knife to cut War's ring off.

Crowley: (voice over from 5.10 Abandon All Hope... (to Ness) "The only reason these three are alive is because they have you on their side."

From 5.10 "Abandon All Hope..." in Crowley's mansion, in the study, Crowley looked at Dean, Catty and Sam. "See, without your genius best friend Ness here, you three would have died years ago."

"Well, I'm not gonna deny that," Dean told him.

From 5.14 "My Bloody Valentine", in the Singer Salvage Yard, Catty and Ness were leaning against Catty's Mustang.

"Look, Ness, I told you before," Catty told her. "I can't talk about it."

Ness nodded to herself. "Yeah, and I told you before. You're drowning, and you need to let someone in before you destroy yourself." Catty had tears in her eyes, pushing them back. "You know, all this time, while everyone knew, the only thing that never happened was... You've never told anyone. And you never actually let yourself grief. You never let the sadness take over and let it all out. You have to sometime, Catty. Just talk to me."

Catty exhaled shakily, hesitating. "I can... I can put on a good face, but if I'm really being honest, it's all just an act, trying to be who I was before Hell, before Alastair." There was a long moment of silence. Catty could barely make herself continue, tears in her eyes, taking a deep breath. Her voice broke. "And after all he did... it broke me in the worst possible way, and the Angels aren't helping in the healing process at all." She took a deep breath. "I have to relive everything that he did to me every night. And even while dead, he still wins. Because if I don't want love of all things, then what is there that I could possibly want?" She hesitated, looking at Ness, letting a few tears fall. "So, please tell me how you can help with any of that, Ness, because I'm not seeing anything that you can possibly help."

Ness seemed to be in pain from seeing Catty's pain like this. She didn't answer, not knowing how she could help, wrapping an arm around Catty soothingly, comfortingly. Catty looked away, crying silently, unable to help it, still trying to remain strong.

NOW

§

 Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Day One

Night - Cemetery

There was a lightning storm up in the sky overhead. There was a headstone labeled:

Clay James Thompson

June 3rd, 1967

October 15, 2004

Father, Coach, Friend

A hand pushed its way through the soil, then another. Clay pulled himself out of his own grave.

§

Trailer

A man was reclined on the sofa, watching a documentary about cheetahs, drinking beer. The lightning storm continued to rage outside.

Documentary: (on TV) "Here on the Savannah, the wildebeest lounges, lazy and self-content, and is oblivious to the fierce predator that stalks him from the shadows. The great wildebeest herds migrate south in search of water, drinking their fill in preparation for the long dry season to come. The wildebeest are on edge. Every movement could be a sound of potential attack. Merely a rustle of the wind through the bushes could scare the entire herd into a bone-crushing stampede."

The trailer rattled. The man stood, walking closer to investigate, opening the door to look outside, rain and wind pelting down around him. It seemed to be just the wind. The man closed the door, walking toward his chair, sitting down, continuing the documentary.

Documentary: (on TV) "At first the animal reacts with confusion..."

The window blew the door open.

Documentary: (on TV) "The wildebeest returns warily to its watering hole, where..."

The man stood, walking toward the door, looking around outside to see nothing, closing the door, locking it.

Documentary: (on TV) "who are closing in for the kill. When it attacks, it attacks quickly."

Clay was standing behind the man, still covered in mud.

The man turned to face Clay, trying to recognize him through the mud on his face. After a moment, he did, shaking his head in denial. "No." Clay stalked closer. The man backed away. "No." He backed away into the wall, next to a shotgun, grabbing it, aiming it at Clay, clocking it, pulling the trigger. All the gun did was click. Clay stalked closer. "No. No. Please! God! No!"

Clay began to strangle the man, both falling to the floor.

Documentary: (on TV) "... every day across the Serengeti."

there was a poster of five classic race cars on the wall, reading: He who dies with the most toys... WINS!

Day Two

Morning - TJz - Outside

Sam, Dean and Catty got out of the Impala, walking up the dock steps to where TJz was, posing as FBI.

Sam was on the phone. "Bobby, listen, when you get this message, call. Or tell Ness to call. Okay?"

Sam hung up.

"Are they still not home?" Dean asked. "How far could Bobby get in that chair?"

Catty looked at the sign for TJz, shrugging. "Well, at least we know where Ness might be."

§

Inside

(Song:) You're One of a Kind - Moot Davis

Sam, Dean and Catty walked inside, looking around.

"Nope," Dean told them. "Ness is not here either."

"So, what do we do?" Sam asked.

"Well..." Catty trailed off. "Guess we just do it ourselves." They sat down at a table opposite of a man. "Mr. Wells, why don't you tell us what you saw in your own words?"

"Call me Digger," Wells told them.

"Digger?" Dean repeated. "Who gave you that name?"

"I did," Digger answered.

"You gave yourself your own nickname?" Dean asked. "You can't do that."

"Who died and made you queen?" Digger asked.

Dean seemed slightly offended. Catty smirked.

Sam looked at Digger. "Okay. Uh, why don't you just tell us what you saw?"

"I saw Clay Thompson climb into Benny Sutton's trailer through the window," Digger told them. "Couple minutes later, Clay walked out, and Benny's dead."

"And, uh..." Catty trailed off, showing Digger a picture of a man. "Is this the guy you saw?"

"Well, he was all covered with mud, but, yeah," Digger answered. "That's Clay."

"And you are aware the Clay Thompson died five years ago?" Sam asked.

"Yep," Digger answered.

"And you're positive that it was this guy?" Dean asked.

"You calling me a liar?" Digger asked.

"No, no, no," Catty answered. "Of course not. Look, can you think of any reason why Clay Thompson, alive or dead, would want to kill Benny Sutton?"

"Hell, yeah," Digger answered. "Well, five years ago, Benny's the one that killed Clay in the first place."

"Is that a fact?" Dean asked.

"Well, yeah," Digger answered. "So-called 'hunting accident'. Now, if you ask me... Clay came back from the grave to get a little payback."

"Go on," Dean told him.

The local Sheriff walked into the diner, talking on her cellphone. "Owen, put down the cupcake and pick up an apple, okay? Okay. I love you."

"Heads up," Digger told them. "'Fargo'."

Sheriff walked closer. "Digger."

"Sheriff," Digger replied.

Sheriff looked at Sam, Dean and Catty. "I'm Sheriff Jody Mills. I don't believe we've had the pleasure."

"Agents Dorfman, Neidermeyer and Pepperridge," Dean told her. "FBI."

"Welcome to Sioux Falls, Agents," Jody told them. "Can I ask you what you're doing with Digger here?"

"They're doing their job," Digger answered for them. "They believe me, Sheriff."

"The FBI believes a dead man committed a murder?" Jody asked skeptically.

"Look, we're just asking a few questions, Sheriff," Sam told her. "That's all."

"Of course, if a dead man didn't commit the murder, then, uh, who did?" Catty asked.

"What'd you say your jurisdiction here was again?" Jody asked.

"Our jurisdiction is wherever the United States government sends us," Dean told her.

"Oh, yeah," Jody told them. "How about me and your supervisor have a little chat about that?"

"Absolutely," Catty told her, taking out a business card, handing it to Jody.

Jody dialed the number, putting her phone to her ear. In the Singer House, one of the phones on the wall started to ring. It was the one for the FBI, when a hunter needed to pose as an Agent to get the information they needed, and someone needed confirmation.

Ness answered the phone. "Agent Mina speaking."

"Agent Mina, this is Sheriff Jody Mills," Jody told her. She seemed to recognize her voice. "Ness?"

Ness was brought up short, making a face, looking away. "Uh, excuse me?"

"Is this Ness Singer?" Jody asked.

Sam, Dean and Catty exchanged a busted look.

"Listen, I don't know who this is, but... this is Agent Mina Murray of the FBI," Ness told her.

"Bull crap," Jody told her. "I've been to TJz enough to recognize the bartender's voice, Ness." Ness looked down, scratching her head awkwardly. Jody looked at Sam, Dean and Catty, also speaking to Ness. "FBI, huh?"

Jody hung up.

"So, uh..." Dean trailed off. "So you know Ness Singer?"

"That is... a fun coincidence," Catty told them.

"Here's what I know about Ness' father, Bobby Singer," Jody told them. "He's a menace around here, ass-full of drunk-and-disorderlies, and mail fraud. While Ness Singer is not the drunk her father is, she is quite the troublemaker, but as far as I know, she's good at covering her tracks. If she wasn't, Ness probably would've gotten into more trouble that Bobby. You understanding me?"

"I think we all can agree that you've made yourself perfectly clear, yes," Sam answered.

"So, whatever the four of you are planning, it ends here," Jody told them. "Now. Ten-four on that, Agents?"

Catty nodded. "Yeah."

Singer House - Library

Sam, Dean and Catty were wearing normal clothes now, looking at Ness and Bobby.

"You know how many times we called?" Dean asked. "Where have you been?"

"Playing murderball," Bobby told them sarcastically.

"Bobby, Ness, seriously," Sam told them.

Ness looked down, nodding. "We been working. You know, trying to find a way to stop the Devil."

"Find anything?" Catty asked.

"What do you think?" Ness asked.

"It's just..." Sam trailed off. "There's a case less than five miles from your house."

"What, the--the Benny Sutton thing?" Ness asked. "That's what this is about?"

"You knew about this?" Catty asked.

"Hell, yes," Ness answered. "I checked into it already. There's nothing here."

"Except a witness who saw a dead guy commit murder," Sam told them.

"What witness?" Ness asked. "Digger Wells?"

"Yeah," Dean answered. "So?"

"So, he's a drunk," Bobby answered.

"Well, what about the lightning storms?" Sam asked. "They look like omens."

"Except in February in South Dakota, it's storm season," Bobby told them. "Guys, we thought it was something, too. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

"So who killed the guy?" Catty asked.

"Take your pick," Bobby told them. "This Benny Sutton guy was a grade-A son of a bitch. There's a list of the living a year long who wouldn't mind putting a cap in his ass."

"So, you're telling us, nothing?" Catty asked.

"Sorry," Bobby told them. "Looks like you wasted a tank of gas on this one."

Catty sighed. "Great."

Ness looked down thoughtfully, almost guiltily, biting her lip. Dean noticed, confused.

§

Night - On the Road

The Impala drove down the road.

§

The Impala

Dean was driving. Catty was in the passenger seat. Sam was in the backseat. Dean pulled over by St. Anthony's Cemetery.

"What's up?" Catty asked.

"Isn't that the graveyard back there?" Dean asked.

"Yeah," Sam answered. "So, what? Ness already checked it out."

"Did you guys notice how Ness was acting?" Dean asked. "Like she was guilty. She only acts that way when she's lying."

"Well, why would Ness be lying?" Catty asked.

"I don't know," Dean told them. "But I wanna find out. Come on. We'll take a peek. Can't hurt."

§

St. Anthony's Cemetery

Catty, Sam and Dean walked through a cemetery, looking for Clay Thompson's grave.

Catty found the headstone with Clay's name and memorial, the grave with overturned soil. "Hey. That look fresh to you?"

"Yeah, actually," Sam answered.

Catty, Sam and Dean exchanged a look.

§

Later

Catty, Sam and Dean had dug up the grave, discovering the coffin was empty.

"What is going on here?" Sam asked.

"I don't know," Dean told them. "But something stinks."

§

Thompson House - Living Room

Sam, Dean and Catty had broke in, looking around, shotguns raised. Clay attacked Dean, thinking he was a burglar, trying to hit him with a golf club. Dean ducked, making the club hit a picture frame behind him, the glass shattering, standing straight, pushing Clay to the floor, aiming his gun at him. Sam and Catty walked closer, aiming their guns at Clay.

"Don't shoot me!" Clay told him. "Please. There's money in the safe."

"We don't want your money," Dean told him.

"What do you want?" Clay asked. "Anything. Please."

"You're Clay Thompson, right?" Sam asked.

"Who are you?" Clay asked, slowly standing.

"Um, FBI," Sam told him.

"FBI?" Clay repeated. "Oh, my God. This is about Benny."

"Wha--what about Benny?" Catty asked.

"He killed me!" Clay told them. "He shot me in the back. I'm supposed to let him get away with that?"

"Hold up," Catty told him. "Are--are you confessing?"

"Please," Clay told them. "I'll go with you. Just--Just don't wake my kids."

"Y--you'll go with us where?" Sam asked.

"Jail," Clay answered.

"Let me get this straight," Dean told him. "You're Clay Thompson, and you died five years ago?"

"Yes," Clay answered.

"And three days ago, you climbed out of your grave, and you killed Benny Sutton?" Dean asked.

"Yes," Clay answered.

"So, you are, in fact, a dead guy?" Dean asked.

"I guess," Clay told them. "I--I--I don't know what I am."

A woman walked in. "Clay? I called 911."

"It's okay, honey," Clay told her. "These people are the FBI. They're here about Benny."

"Why don't come with us, Mr. Thompson?" Dean asked. "I think that'd be best."

§

Outside

Clay led the way toward the street. Dean took out a gun, hiding it from Clay while preparing to shoot him.

"Dean," Sam told him.

"He's a monster," Dean told them.

"He's a soccer dad," Sam told him.

"What do you want to do with him?" Dean asked.

Sheriff Jody Mills and another police officer walked closer, aiming guns at them.

"Freeze!" Jody told them. "Drop your guns!"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa," Catty told them, chuckling, putting the shotgun down. Sam put his shotgun down. Dean put his handgun down. "All right. Hey."

"Remember the guy you said that was dead and couldn't possibly commit murder?" Dean asked. "There he is."

"And?" Jody asked.

"'And'?" Dean repeated. "And you're welcome, for catching the undead killer Zombie."

"Whatever he is or isn't, that don't give you the right to shoot him in the middle of the street," Jody told him, handcuffing Dean.

"Shoot me?" Clay repeated.

"You're free to go, Mr. Thompson," Jody told him.

"Free to go?" Dean repeated in a demand.

"I can't believe you were gonna kill me," Clay told him.

"You're a Zombie," Dean told him.

"I'm a tax payer!" Clay told them, walking toward the house.

The two other officers handcuffed Sam and Catty.

§

Sheriff's Station - Holding Cell

Dean was sitting down on a bench. Sam was pacing.  Catty was leaning against the wall closest to the bars.

"So, what?" Dean asked. "Sheriff's on the take?"

Sam exhaled, shrugging. "Yeah. No. The Zombies are paying her off?"

Catty saw Jody and Ness talking in the main room. "Hey." Sam and Dean followed her gaze. "So, what? Now they're friends?"

Ness and Jody looked toward them.

§

Hallway

Ness led the way toward the exit. Sam, Dean and Catty followed.

"Ness, I thought the Sheriff hated you and hated Bobby," Sam told her.

"She did," Ness told them. "Till five days ago."

"What happened five days ago?" Dean asked.

"The dead started rising all over town," Ness answered.

"So you knew about this?" Catty asked.

"Yep," Ness answered.

"I think what Catty meant to say is, 'You lied to us?'," Dean told her.

Ness turned to face them, making them stop. "Look, Dad and I told you there was nothing here. And there isn't. Not for you."

"There a Zombies here," Dean told her.

"There are Zombies, and there there are Zombies," Ness told them. "Come with me."

Ness turned around, walking toward the door. Sam, Dean and Catty exchanged a look, following.

§

Singer House - Living Room

Ness led the way into the house.

"You want to tell us what the hell..." Dean trailed off.

Ness opened the sliding double doors, leading the way into the dining room.

§

Dining Room

Sam, Dean and Catty stood behind Ness. Bobby was sitting in his wheelchair at the table. Karen Singer was wearing an apron, walking toward Bobby, carrying a plate, placing it down in front of him.

"It's 4:00 AM, babe," Bobby told her. "You didn't need to cook."

"Oh, please," Karen told him. She noticed Sam, Dean, Ness and Catty, walking closer. "Oh, hey, Nessie. I didn't realize you were bringing company, sweetie." She put a hand on Ness' cheek. Ness smiled a small smile. "I'll get some more plates."

Karen walked out, toward the kitchen.

Catty looked from Bobby to Ness. "Who was that?"

Ness slowly turned to face Sam, Dean and Catty. "My mother."

§

Catty, Sam, Bobby, Ness and Dean were sitting at the dinner table. Karen was standing, still serving them food.

Dean took a bite of pie. "This is incredible, Mrs. Singer."

"Thank you, Dean," Karen told him.

Sam gave Dean a look.

"What?" Dean asked. "It is."

"It's great, Mom," Ness told her. "Thanks."

"Could you, um, just give us a minute?" Bobby asked.

Karen walked out of the room, leaving.

Catty looked at Bobby and Ness, keeping her voice down. "Are you crazy? What the hell?"

"Catty, I can explain," Ness told her.

"Explain what?" Dean asked. "Lying to us? Or the American Girl Zombie making cupcakes in your kitchen?"

"First of all, that's my mom, Dean, so watch it," Ness told him.

"Ness, whatever that thing is in there, it is not your mother," Dean told her.

"And how do you know that?" Bobby asked.

"Are you serious?" Sam asked.

"You think we're idiots, boy?" Bobby asked. "My dead wife, her dead mother shows up on the doorstep, we're not gonna test her every way we learned?"

"So, what is it?" Catty asked. "Zombies? Revenant?"

"Hell if I can tell," Bobby told them. "She's got no scars, no wounds, no reaction to salt, silver, Holy Water..."

"Bobby, she crawled out of her coffin," Catty told him.

"No, she didn't," Bobby told them. "We cremated her." Catty, Sam and Dean exchanged a confused look. "Somehow, some way, she's back."

"That's impossible," Sam told him.

"Tell me about it," Ness told them.

"You bury her ashes?" Sam asked.

"Yeah," Ness answered.

"Where?" Dean asked.

"In the cemetery," Ness answered. "That's where they all rose from."

"How many?" Catty asked.

"15, 20," Ness answered. "I made a list." She pulled the list out of her pocket, handing it to Dean. "Uh, there's Mom, Clay. Sheriff Jody Mills? Her little boy came back."

"And there were no signs?" Sam asked. "No omens?"

"Well, there were the lightning storms," Bobby told them.

"That's what we said," Catt told them. "What else?"

Bobby rolled his wheelchair away, toward a shelf, grabbing a Bible, reading from the Book of Revelation. "'And through the fire stood before me a pale horse. And he that sat atop him carried a scythe, and I saw since he had risen, they, too, shall rise, and from him and through him'."

"So, what, Death is behind this?" Dean asked.

"Death, Death?" Sam asked. "Like 'Grim Reaper' Death?"

"Yeah," Bobby answered.

"Great," Catty told them sarcastically. "Another Horseman. Must be Thursday."

Sam stood, walking around the table. "Why would Death raise 15 people in a podunk town like Sioux Falls?"

Sam sat at the desk, taking the Bible.

"I don't know," Ness told them.

"You know, if Death is behind this, then whatever these things are... it's not good," Dean told them. "You know, what we have to do here."

"She doesn't remember anything, you know," Ness told them.

"What do you mean?" Catty asked.

"Being possessed by the Demon," Ness told them. "The Demon trying to make her kill me in front of Dad. Dad killing her. Her coming back."

"Ness..." Dean trailed off.

"No, no, don't 'Ness' me," Ness told him. "Just... just listen, okay?"

They could hear Karen humming in the kitchen.

"She hums when she cooks," Bobby told them. "She always... used to hum when she cooked. Tone deaf as all hell, but... And I never thought I would hear it again." He looked at Sam. "Look, just read Revelation. The dead rise during the Apocalypse. There's nothing in there that says that's bad. Hell, maybe it's the one good thing that comes out of this whole bloody mess."

"And what would you two do if you were us?" Dean asked.

Ness looked down, nodding barely. "I know what I'd do. And I know what you think you got to do." She looked up. "But... This is my mom. And I never had a chance to know her like my dad did. I figured you three of all people would understand that." Catty, Dean and Sam looked at each other. "And you three were willing not to be even born to save your parents. What do you think I'm willing to do to save mine?" They knew she had a point. "I'm begging you. Please. Please, leave her be."

§

Day Three

Morning - TJz

(Song:) Loving the Sin I'm In - Terry Campbell

Sam, Catty and Dean were sitting at the bar, eating and drinking.

"So, what do you think?" Sam asked.

"There's nothing to think about," Catty told them. "I'm not gonna leave Bobby and Ness at home with the Bride of Frankenstein."

"Then, what do you want to do?" Sam asked. "Just walk in there in front of Bobby and Ness and blow her skull off?"

"If she decides that Bobby and Ness are the blue plate specials, I'd like to be there," Dean told them.

"Fine," Sam told him. He looked at Catty. "You and I will see what else we can find out."

§

Singer Salvage Yard

Dean was outside the Singer House, running a hand along the hood of the Impala, turning his back to it, leaning against it, seeing that Karen was behind him, jumping slightly.

"Oops," Karen told him. "Did I scare you?"

Dean shook his head. "No. No. No. There's... nothing scary about you at all."

"Feel like some lunch?" Karen asked.

"Uh, I'm good," Dean told her. "Thanks."

"Come on," Karen told him.

"I don't think that Bobby wants me inside," Dean told her. "Ness would be okay with it, but I don't think Bobby would."

"Guess it'll have to be our secret, then, huh?" Karen asked. "Come on."

Karen led the way toward the house. Dean hesitated, following her.

§

Mills House - Outside

Catty snuck up to the window to see Jody and her husband reading a book to their young son. She looked toward Sam, who was leaning against Catty's Mustang, shaking her head.

§

Singer House - Kitchen

Bobby was sleeping in a chair out in the living room. Karen and Dean stood in the kitchen.

Dean was eating a piece of pie. "Where's Ness?"

"At work, for a little while," Karen answered. She chuckled, shaking her head. "Hard to believe my little Nessie turned out to be a bartender at a bar on a dock."

"Oh, Ness turned out to be a lot more than that," Dean told her, looking around at all of the other pies in the room. "I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that you like pies. Did you bake all these?"

"I don't know what it is," Karen told him. "Since I got back, I can't stop baking."

"Yeah, when do you have time to sleep?" Dean asked.

"I don't," Karen answered. "It must be the excitement."

Dean shrugged. "Or being dead."

Karen sighed. "I know you don't trust me."

"Why would you say that?" Dean asked.

"Come on, Dean," Karen told him. "That's why you're here, isn't it? Keeping an eye on me? I know who you are. Just like I know Bobby's not the same mild-mannered scrap dealer I married. And like you said, I know that Ness is a lot more than a bartender in a small town. You hunt things. I--I'm a thing. I get it."

"So then you know that Sam, Catty and I would never let anything happen to Bobby and Ness," Dean told her.

"I understand," Karen told him. "And Bobby and Ness are lucky to have you looking out for them, Dean. But you're not the only one."

"Is that so?" Dean asked.

"I remember everything, you know," Karen told him. "When I died. That Demon taking over my body... and the things it made me do." She had tears in her eyes. "The things it made me do to Ness while Bobby watched. And Bobby have no choice but to... Well, you know what he did to save Ness. But I can see it in their eyes when they look at me. The guilt. The sadness. It weighs on them. Bobby knows the truth. He knows that I remember. But Ness doesn't."

"So why don't you just tell Ness you remember?" Dean asked. "I mean, you told Bobby. Why not tell Ness?"

"I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say you've never felt the love for your own child," Karen told him. "She's my daughter. My job is to take care of her. I failed the first time. I can't fail again. But my job is also to bring her peace. Not pain. But I know I'm not the only one that loves our girl Ness." Dean looked at her in surprise. "I can see it, the way you're worried about her. The way you look at her. She's lucky to have you, Dean. And I think she knows it."

Dean looked away thoughtfully.

House - Outside

Catty's Mustang pulled up outside. Sam and Catty got out of the car.

Catty looked at Sam. "This the right house?"

Sam looked at Ness' list in his hand. "Yeah. Yeah, Ezra Jones."

Sam and Catty walked up the porch steps.

Catty knocked on the door. "Mrs. Jones?"

Sam looked down to see blood on the floor. "Cat."

Catty followed his gaze. She looked at Sam, taking out her lock pick, kneeling to pick the lock. Sam played lookout. Catty opened the door, walking inside. Sam followed her, closing the door behind them.

Jones House - Foyer

Sam and Catty were looking around.

"Ezra Jones?" Catty called, walking toward another room, seeing something. "Sam."

Sam walked closer.

§

Ezra's Room

Sam was standing in the doorway. Catty stopped next to him, seeing what he saw. An elderly woman, was lying in bed weakly, looking sick, her face scabbed.

"Um..." Sam trailed off. "Ezra Jones?" The woman nodded weakly, coughing, gesturing for them to walk closer. "Uh..." Sam stepped closer. "Uh... What is it?" Sam stopped. Ezra coughed, gesturing for him to come closer. "You think maybe you could tell us from here?"

Ezra gestured for Sam to come closer.

Catty tilted her head in a seriously way. "Sam..."

"Just give me a second," Sam told her, walking toward Ezra.

"You're gonna regret this," Catty told him. "I guarantee it." Sam ignored her, walking closer to Ezra. Ezra coughed, screaming, trying to bite Sam. Sam backed away quickly, tripping over another dead body that looked as if it had been eating. Ezra stood, lunging at Sam, slobbering over him. Catty drew her gun instantly, shooting Ezra in the head, killing her, making her fall to the floor. She walked toward Sam. "Told you."

Sam gave Catty a look, wiping the saliva away from his cheek.

Singer House - Library

Ness closed the double doors so Karen wouldn't hear the discussion between her, Bobby, Sam, Dean and Catty.

"Keep your damn voices down," Bobby told them. "Karen's upstairs."

"Oh, I'm sorry," Dean told him sarcastically. "We're a little tense right now. Who's old lady Jones?"

Ness turned to face them. "The first one to come up."

"First one to go bad," Sam told them.

"Ah, she was always a nutty broad," Bobby told them.

"Nutty how?" Dean asked. "Nutty like the way she ate her husband's stomach? Was that the level of nutty she was in life?"

Ness hesitated. "No."

"Look, guys, I feel for you," Catty told them. "But you have got to acknowledge that you're not exactly seeing this straight."

"Whether you admit it or not, these things are turning," Sam told them. "We have to stop them. All of them."

Bobby pulled out a gun, setting it on his lap. "Time to go."

"Dad," Ness told him.

Bobby ignored her, looking at Sam, Catty and Dean. "You heard me. Off my property."

"Or what?" Catty asked. "You'll shoot?"

"If Karen turns, Ness and I will handle it our way," Bobby told them.

"This is dangerous," Dean told them.

Bobby cocked the gun. "I'm not telling you twice."

Ness gave Bobby a look. "Dad!"

Sam, Catty and Dean looked at Ness for a moment, exchanging a look, sighing, walking out of the house, leaving. Ness sighed, shaking her head barely, looking at Bobby for a moment, walking away.

Singer Salvage Yard

Dean, Sam and Catty walked outside into the yard, standing next to the Impala and Catty's Mustang.

Dean turned to face them. "Bobby's crazy. Ness is not as crazy, but she is still crazy enough to let Bobby get away with that."

"It's Bobby's wife, and Ness' mother, Dean," Catty told him.

"So Bobby goes 'Full Mental Jacket' on us?" Dean asked.

"Look, man," Sam told him. "Bigger fish, okay? I mean, we got a bunch of Zombies about to turn this town into a giant chew toy."

Dean walked toward the trunk of the Impala. "Yeah, and Ness and Bobby are alone in the house making pie with one of them."

"All right, so?" Sam asked.

"So?" Dean repeated, opening the trunk and the arsenal, propping the lid up with a shot gun. "I'm gonna have to go back there and--and--and kill her. That's the only thing I can think of."

"If Bobby sees you, you're a dead man," Sam told him.

"Well, then, I guess I won't let him see me," Dean told them, preparing bullets.

"Okay," Catty told them. "Sam and I'll... head to town and rescue everyone. Should be easy."

"Sounds like," Dean told them, grabbing a shotgun, putting the bullets into the barrel.

Catty looked at Dean. "We're gonna need some help."

"What about the Sheriff?" Dean asked.

"Uh, last time I checked, the Sheriff was pretty pro-Zombie," Sam told them.

"Well, I guess you'll just have to convince her," Dean told them, closing the arsenal and the trunk.

"How?" Catty asked.

"I don't know," Dean told them. "You're just gonna."

Catty sighed, looking at Sam. "Let's go."

Sam and Catty walked toward Catty's Mustang, getting into the car with Catty driving, driving away, leaving.

Mills House - Living Room

Jody's son was lying on the couch, obviously sick.

Jody was sitting next to her son, blotting his head with a cold cloth. "There. Does that feel better, Owen?"

"Mm-hmm," Owen answered. "I'm so hungry, Mommy."

"Oh, I know," Jody told him. "I know. Mommy's gonna make you some soup, okay?"

"Okay," Owen told her.

Jody looked at Owen sadly.

§

Kitchen

Jody was making soup.

Jody's husband was on the phone. "I don't know what else to tell you, doc. We checked the thermometer three times. His temperature is 111 degrees.

They heard Owen's voice. "Mommy."

"Hold on, doc," Jody's husband told him, handing the phone to Jody.

They heard Owen's voice. "I'm hungry!"

Jody handed the bowl of soup to her husband. "Sean, can you take that in to him?" Sean took the bowl, walking out of the kitchen, into the living room. Jody put the phone to her ear to speak to the doctor. "Dr. Dwight, it's Jody Mills."

§

Singer Salvage Yard

Dean stood at the trunk of the Impala, loading a shotgun, closing the trunk, walking toward the house.

§

Singer House - Living Room

Bobby was looking out of the window, paranoid. "Karen, say away from the windows." He heard a thud from the kitchen. "Karen?"

§

Kitchen

Ness walked into the kitchen to see Karen collapsed to the floor. "Mom?" She ran to Karen's side, kneeling next to her. "Mom!"

Karen coughed, gasping weakly. "I'm... I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm okay. I just... I'm okay. I--I just got to be dizzy, Nessie."

Ness helped Karen sit up. "You're burning up."

"Oh, I'm okay," Karen told her. "I--I just need something to eat. And I'll be fine. Really."

Karen coughed heavily. Ness watched her worriedly.

§

Mills House - Kitchen

Jody was still on the phone. "I don't know how to explain it, doctor. That's... that's why we're calling you. I..." There was a noise from the living room. Jody put the phone on the counter. "Sean? Owen?"

§

Living Room

Jody walked into the room, looking around. Owen was kneeling over Sean's body on the floor, eating him alive, his mouth and chin bloodstained.

Jody looked on in horror. "Oh, my God."

Owen stood, turning to face Jody, slowly approaching her.

Catty burst through the door, pulling her toward the door. "Let's go!"

"No!" Jody told her.

"Go!" Catty told her.

Jody ran outside. Catty closed the door behind them.

§

Outside

Catty and Jody stood with Sam.

Jody looked at Catty, crying. "My husband!"

"Leave it," Catty told her. "He's dead."

"That was not my son," Jody told them.

"You're right," Catty told her. "It wasn't." She looked at Sam. "Go." Sam nodded, walking toward the house with the gun. Catty looked at Jody. "Listen, Sheriff. Your town is in danger. People are in danger, and we need to help them now. Can you do that for me?" Jody didn't answer, in shock. "Can you focus for me, Sheriff? Sheriff?"

Jody hesitated, slowly nodding. "How do we put them down?"

"Head shot," Catty answered.

Jody nodded. "We're gonna need weapons."

"We can start by rounding up everybody we can find," Catty told her. "Where is there a safe place we can take people? You know, somewhere that can fit everyone. Jail's too small."

Jody nodded in agreement. "TJz. It's on the dock, surrounded by water. If we're safe anywhere, we're safe there."

"Right," Catty told her. "Good idea."

Jody looked toward the house. "What is he going to do?"

"Hey, look at me," Catty told her, putting her hands on Jody's shoulders, turning her to face her, away from the house. "Jody, look at me."

Jody looked at Catty. They could hear a gun shot. Jody closed her eyes, wincing, starting to cry. Catty embraced her.

Singer House - Bobby's Room

Karen laid in bed, sick. Ness sat next to Karen on the bed, holding her hand. Bobby sat in his wheelchair next to them.

"I'm so hungry," Karen told them.

"I'll fix you something to eat in a minute," Ness told her.

"I can feel it," Karen told them. "It's happening."

"Shh," Bobby told her. "It's gonna be all right."

"No," Karen told him. "It's not. I'm turning, Bobby. You know I am." Ness looked at her gun on a table nearby. "It's okay, Ness. Do it."

Ness shook her head. "No way."

"Please," Karen told her.

"No," Ness told her.

Karen took a deep breath. "I remember."

"You remember what?" Ness asked.

"Everything," Karen answered. "The Demon inside of me. What he tried to make me do to you. Bobby killing me. I remember."

"Then you know... why I can't do it again," Bobby told her.

"I remember something else, too," Karen told them. "When I came back... there was a man."

"What do you mean, a man?" Bobby asked.

"At the grave," Karen told them. "He was so thin. Like a skeleton. Ness, he told me to give you a message."

"Me?" Ness asked. "W--why didn't you tell me this before?"

"You've seen so much," Karen told her. "You've been through so much. And you're my little girl. I just... I just wanted to see you smile, Nessie."

Ness looked away with tears in her eyes. She took a few deep, silent breaths, looking at Karen. "What was the message?"

§

Foyer

Dean opened the front door, walking in. He heard a gunshot from upstairs, instantly worried. "Bobby? Ness?"

§

Bobby's Room

Dean walked in to see Karen dead with Bobby and Ness by her side. He looked at them expressionlessly, sympathetic. "Ness?"

Ness stood, looking at the gun in her hand, having been the one to kill her mother, tears in her eyes. She could barely meet Dean's gaze.

§

TJz

The place was crowded, but not as crowded as if would've been in the sheriff's station. People had pushed the tables and the chairs aside to get more room. Sam and Catty were going through the arsenal from Catty's Mustang's trunk.

"All right, if we hand you a gun, and you see a dead person, I don't care if it's your friend, your neighbor, or your wife, you shoot for the head," Sam told them, handing out the two guns in hand to two people. Catty handed out the two guns in hand to two people. "That's the only way we survive."

A man looked at Sam and Catty. "Uh, you mind telling us who the hell you two are?"

"Friends of Bobby and Ness Singer's," Catty answered.

"Town drunk and the troublemaker bartender?" the man asked.

"No, I--I thought..." Catty trailed off, nodding toward Digger. "He was the town drunk."

"Who told you that?" the man asked.

Catty hesitated. "Bobby Singer." The man nodded. "And Ness Singer is a whole lot more than a troublemaker and a bartender, believe me. Anyway. Stay sharp. I'll watch the front door."

§

Singer Salvage Yard

Ness was going through Ness' Car's arsenal to get the weapons that she needed. She was crying silently, wiping the tears away, clearing her throat, composing herself.

Dean walked closer. "You know, Ness, if you want to sit this one out..."

Ness looked down, shaking her head. She looked at Dean. "You were right."

Dean sighed. "I wish to God I wasn't."

"I don't just mean about the Zombies, Dean," Ness told him. "I mean, you were right about me not seeing this one straight."

"After everything that happened, I don't think anybody could," Dean told her. "I've been in your position before, and in those times, I wasn't seeing straight. But you did pull through. You did what you had to do." Ness looked down. Dean closed the trunk of Ness' Car and arsenal. "You okay?"

Ness sighed, shaking her head, looking away. "Let's just get going."

Ness turned toward the driver's side of the car. Dean caught her arm. Ness looked up at him, trying to keep herself under control. Dean pulled her into an embrace. Ness returned it, leaning her head against his shoulder, trying not to cry.

"I'm so sorry," Dean told her sadly.

They heard something further in the yard, like someone was approaching, pulling away. Dean and Ness grabbed shotguns, walking toward it to investigate.

§

TJz

Catty opened the front door, looking outside, around, searching for any Zombies, closing the door, turning to face Sam, shaking her head.

§

Singer Salvage Yard

Dean and Ness separated to look for the noise.

Ness saw a flitting figure. "Dean? Dean!"

Ness turned to see Dean shoot a Zombie. A Zombie tackled Ness to the ground, making her drop the shotgun, leaning closer to bite. Ness struggled to keep him away at arms bay.

§

Ness punched the Zombie in the face, making him fall off of her. She rolled, trying to grab the shotgun behind her. The Zombie grabbed her leg, pulling Ness away from the shotgun.

Dean looked toward them. "Ness!"

A Zombie ran toward Dean. Dean shot him in the head, killing him. He saw another Zombie behind a car, trying to shoot him. The Zombie ducked behind the car. The Zombie was still pulling Ness away from the shotgun. Ness rolled to face him, kicking him with her other leg, making him let go and fall back. She grabbed the shotgun, turning toward the Zombie, shooting him in the head, killing him. She sighed, standing. A Zombie ran toward Dean. Dean shot him in the head, making him fall back into the car behind him, killing him. Another Zombie ran toward Dean. Dean shot her in the head, killing her. Another Zombie tackled Dean to the ground, making him drop his shotgun. Ness suddenly stood next to them, putting her shotgun to the Zombie's head, shooting, killing him, making him fall off of Dean, onto the ground next to him. Dean looked at Ness in surprise, breathing heavily. Ness tilted the shotgun up against her shoulder, offering Dean a hand. Dean took it, letting her help him up, grabbing his shotgun from the ground next to them. They looked at each other, breathing heavily, hearing more noises from behind each of them, turning to face the noises on either side, back-to-back, seeing two Zombies running toward them on either side, shooting them in the head, killing them. They started to run back toward the house. Ness saw a Zombie behind a car, trying to shoot him. He ducked behind the car. When he came out of hiding, Ness shot him in the head, killing him.

§

Singer House

Dean and Ness ran inside, closing the door behind them.

"Got anymore ammo?" Dean asked. "I'm low."

"Yeah, we got plenty," Ness answered. "Just run back past the Zombies. It's in my trunk, where we left it."

"A simple 'no' would have been fine," Dean told her. Ness shrugged barely. Bobby rolled closer to them in his chair. "What the hell are they all doing here, anyway?"

Bobby looked at his daughter. "I think Ness."

Dean looked at them in confusion. "What?"

They heard glass shattering from upstairs.

"Oh, that ain't good," Bobby told them.

A Zombie shattered through the living room window. Ness shot him in the head, killing him. A Zombie ran downstairs toward them.

Dean shot him in the head, killing him. He checked his ammo. "I'm out."

Ness checked her ammo. "Me, too."

Bobby looked toward the kitchen. "Come on."

§

Kitchen

Ness pushed Bobby's chair into the kitchen. Dean followed. A Zombie shattered through the window. Dean used the butt of his shotgun to hit him in the head, making him fall to the floor. Ness pushed Bobby along. The Zombie stood. Another Zombie ran in. A Zombie in front of them tried to break in through the window in front of them. Ness handed Bobby her shotgun. Bobby used the shotgun's butt to hit the Zombie in the head, making her fall back outside. More Zombies ran inside. Ness opened the door to the kitchen's walk-in pantry. More and more Zombies were coming. Ness backed away inside the kitchen walk-in pantry, pulling Bobby's chair with her. Dean followed them in, closing the door. The nine remaining Zombies pounded against the door, trying to break their way inside.

§

Pantry

Ness turned the light on above them. Dean locked the door.

"Kind of a tight fit, don't you think?" Bobby asked.

"It's all right," Dean told them. "They're idiots. They can't pick a lock."

The pounding stopped. They looked at the doorknob to see that the lock was being picked.

Ness tilted her head. "Oh, come on."

Bobby looked at Dean. "Don't you ever get tired of being wrong?"

"I'm making this stuff up as I go," Dean told them. "Sue me."

Dean and Ness held the shotguns in their hands ready. The door opened. The Zombies tried to push their way in. Ness and Dean used the shotguns to hit them back repeatedly as much as they possibly could.

They heard Catty's voice behind all the Zombies. "Get down!"

Bobby, Ness and Dean hid on either side of the closet, out of the range of the door to avoid being shot.

§

Kitchen

Sam, Catty and Jody were behind the nine Zombies, shooting three Zombies each in the head, killing them all. All of the Zombies fell to the floor, dead. Bobby, Ness and Dean came out of hiding to see blood everywhere and the pile of bodies, breathing heavily.

Sam lowered his shotgun. "Are you okay?"

Bobby, Ness and Dean didn't answer. Ness looked over all the bodies, still in shock, looking as if she was trying to wrap her head around something.

§

Day Three

Morning - Cemetery

Dean and Sam were standing in front of a massive funeral pyre for all of the dead Zombies, watching them burn. Jody and Catty walked toward Dean and Sam, standing next to them, watching the bodies burn.

"Well, if there's any Zombies left out there, we can't find them," Catty told them.

"How are the townspeople?" Sam asked.

"Pretty freaked out," Jody answered. "Hell, traumatized. A few of them are calling the papers. As far as I can tell, nobody's believed them yet."

"Would you?" Catty asked. Jody shook her head. Catty looked at her sympathetically, trying not to make anything worse. "How are you holding up?"

Jody didn't answer, shaking her head barely.

"Is that everyone?" Dean asked.

Sam nodded. "All but one."

§

Singer Salvage Yard

Bobby and Ness were watching Karen's body burn in another funeral pyre. Sam, Dean and Catty walked toward Bobby and Ness, standing next to them.

"So, thinking maybe I should apologize for losing my head back there," Bobby told them.

"Bobby, you don't owe us anything," Catty told him. "Neither or Ness do."

"At least you got to spend five days with her, right?" Dean asked.

"Right," Ness answered. "Which makes things about a thousand times worse. She was my mom. I never got to know her. Not really. I finally get to meet the real her all these years later, and I have to kill her so my dad doesn't have to again."

"Are you gonna be okay?" Sam asked.

Bobby and Ness didn't answer.

Ness took a deep breath. "You guys should know... Mom told us why Death was here."

"What do you mean?" Sam asked.

"We know why he took a stroll through a cemetery in the sticks of South Dakota," Ness told them. "He came for me."

"What do you mean, you?" Dean asked.

"Death came for me," Ness answered. "He brought my mom back to send me a message."

"You?" Catty asked. "Why you?"

"Because I've been helping you three," Ness answered. She scoffed, shaking her head. "I went with you to help turn one of the Horsemen into a quivering heap, which I did by cutting off his ring, and I went with you to help you kill Lucifer, but we all know how that turned out. War's still alive, but in the fetal position, and all we did was end up pissing Lucifer off. Dean, I'm one of the reasons Sam and Catty are still saying no to Lucifer and Michael."

"So this was, like, a hit on your life?" Dean asked.

"I don't know if they wanted to take my life, or... my spirit," Ness told them. "Either way, they wanted me out of the way."

"But you're gonna be all right," Dean told her. "Right, Ness?"

Ness didn't answer, looking at Dean. Dean looked at Ness sadly, trying not to make anything worse. Ness looked at Bobby. Bobby looked at Ness worriedly. Bobby and Ness looked into the flames of Karen's funeral pyre. Catty, Sam, Dean, Ness and Bobby continued to watch the body of Karen Singer burn away.
