THEN

From 6.04 "Singers' Weekend", in Bobby's House, Ness looking over a map of Scotland, searching on her laptop.

Bobby was answering calls on the walls. "Yeah, Garth, what do you got? Never heard of a Vamp doing that. It doesn't sound like our kind of thing. Better drop a dime to the FBI." He hung up, placing it back on its charger. Another phone labeled FBI Tom Willis rang. "Willis, FBI. No, Garth, not me, the FBI. The real FBI. How are you still alive?"

Ness chuckled, shaking her head.

From 7.08 "Season 7, It's Time for a Wedding!", in Mutual Freedom Insurance's foyer, Ness, Dean and Catty were posing as FBI, standing with Marsha.

Dean pointed at Marsha. "We drop this lady off at..."

"Where?" Catty asked. "Bobby's in the nest at Oregon. She can't go to Rufus' Cabin."

"Garth," Ness suggested.

Catty thought for a moment, nodding. "Yeah, okay. Garth."

Ness looked at Marsha. "Now, you—you'll be living with a semi-functional hunter until this all blows over, okay?"

From 7.18 "Party On, Garth", in Ness' Car, Ness was driving. Catty was in the passenger seat. Sam and Dean were in the backseat.

Ness' phone rang. She pulled it out to answer. "Hello?"

Garth's voice was on the other line. "Hey, Ness. It's Garth." He was in his car, sounding proud and smug with his name. "Garth Fitzgerald IV."

"I know who this is, Garth," Ness told him. "You don't have to say your full damn name."

Garth smiled. "I know. I just like saying it."

Ness seemed amused, shaking her head.

From 7.18 "Party On, Garth", in the morgue, Sam, Dean, Catty and Ness were posing as FBI. Sam, Dean and Catty watched Garth go, looking at Ness, raising their eyebrows.

Ness shrugged. "He grows on you."

From 7.18 "Party On, Garth", in the brewery, The Shojo appeared in front of Garth. Garth smiled awkwardly, nervously. The Shojo used magic to throw Garth into a wall of glass windows, making the windows shatter, and Garth fall unconscious.

From 7.18 "Party On, Garth", in the brewery, Garth stood, holding his head. "What'd I miss?"

From 7.18 "Party On, Garth", outside the motel, Garth got into his car, starting the engine.

Sam looked at Ness. "You're right. He has grown on me."

From 8.01 "We Need to Talk About Sabrina", in Rufus' Cabin's kitchen, Sam, Dean, Catty and Ness were gathered.

"I guess, um... I guess something happened to us this year, too," Sam told them. "Uh, I could barely keep track of Catty and Sabrina because they were always on the run, and I don't hunt anymore."

Sam smiled tentatively.

"You quit?" Dean asked.

"Yeah," Sam answered. "We stuck together for a little while. Then they tracked us down and tried to take them and kill me. Sabrina barely got us out. Sabrina's still learning how to use her... powers. We got separated because of it. We talked after that, but we haven't seen each other since."

"You didn't even try to find them?" Dean asked.

"Yes, he did," Catty answered. "Sabrina and I were the ones that stayed away because I was trying to protect him, Dean. And there was no possible way for him to catch up because we had to be ready to fight or move at a moment's notice."

From 8.01 "We Need to Talk About Sabrina", in the joined motel room, Sam, Dean and Catty were talking.

Sm looked at Dean. "I tried to find them. I did." He looked at Catty. "You just mixed up your running and hiding routine so much that even I couldn't find you."

"Yeah, because I didn't want to be found," Catty told him.

"I get that, and I get that you just wanted to protect me, which I thank you for that," Sam told her. "I just... I don't know."

"Look, Sam, even if you weren't with Catty and Sabrina, you could have still done the job," Dean told him. "What could possibly make you stop just like that? A girl? Was there a girl?"

"Yeah," Sam answered. "Amelia."

From 8.05 "Blood Brother", in flashback to the motel room, Sam and Octavia were sitting together.

Octavia shook her head, sighing. "If something happens to me, after you've grieved... you promise me that you'll move on, and live your life. Whether it's as a hunter, or as a regular Human being living with a nice girl, safe and sound."

"Why is this so important to you?" Sam asked.

"Because I need to know that if something happens to me, if I'm gone, that you'll be safe," Octavia answered. "That you'll be fine. And that you'll be happy. Promise me, Sam."

Sam looked at her for a long moment, knowing she was serious and understanding why she was doing this, nodding. "I promise you, Ava."

From 8.05 "Blood Brother", in the phone booth, Catty and Sam's phone call (phone booth and street).

"You almost got killed because of me and Sabrina," Catty told him. "I just got Sabrina back, Sammy, and I will die before I lose her again, but I can't lose you, too."

"What the hell are you talking about, Catty?" Sam asked. "I'm not just gonna leave you and Sabrina."

"It's not leaving us if you don't know where Sabrina and I are at," Catty told him.

Sam realized what she was doing. "No. You're insane. You cannot do this alone. You said it yourself, Catty, it's you against the world. You need all the help you and Sabrina can get."

Catty had tears in her eyes, shaking her head. "No, what I need is for you to be okay. Alive." She let a few tears fall, looking down. "Take care of yourself, Sammy."

"You're not gonna be able to get rid of me that easily," Sam told her. "I'm gonna find you and Sabrina."

Catty hesitated, looking up, taking a deep breath, trying to make herself sound strong. "I'd like to see you try."

From 8.05 "Blood Brother", lakeside, Young Sabrina was standing in front of Catty. "Where's Uncle Sammy, Mommy?"

Catty exhaled shakily, kneeling in front of Young Sabrina. "Uncle Sammy's not gonna be with us anymore. He's okay. Just... We have to go our own way. But we're gonna be fine. And he's gonna be fine. Okay?" Young Sabrina looked at Catty for a moment, showing how scared she was, nodding small, barely noticeable nods. She had tears in her eyes. Catty held Young Sabrina's shoulders. "It's okay, Sabrina. Come here." Catty and Young Sabrina embraced sadly. Young Sabrina started to cry. Catty stroked her hair soothingly, having tears in her own eyes, trying to be strong for Young Sabrina. "It's okay. Shh. It's okay, Sabrina."

Catty looked up toward the sky, as if she was asking for help, looking as if she had no idea how to do this.

Catty: (voice over from 8.03 Heartache) "You have no idea how scared I actually was."

From 8.01 "We Need to Talk About Sabrina", in Dean and Ness' motel room, Ness was sitting at the table, on her laptop, drinking coffee. She was tense and nervous, rubbing her hands together. She was shaky and on edge.

From 8.01 "We Need to Talk About Sabrina", in the joined motel room, Catty looked at Dean. "All right, what about you and Ness?"

"What about Ness?" Dean asked.

From 8.01 "We Need to Talk About Sabrina", in Purgatory, Another Vampire yelled, running toward Dean, tackling him to the ground, holding him against the ground, trying to feed. Dean unsuccessfully reached for his Purgatory weapon. Benny appeared, tackling the second Vampire to the ground, beheading him with his own weapon. He turned to looked at Dean, his Vampire teeth descended.

Catty: (voice over from 8.01 We Need to Talk About Sabrina) "You still act like you can't calm down."

From 8.02 "What's Up, Tiger Mommy?", in Purgatory's Vampire Nest, There were closeups of Ness' bloody, filthy body. She was covered in sweat, blood and filth. There were sounds of growling Vampires and closeups of Vampire fangs. Ness looked to be barely alive, glaring toward the Vampires. There were flashes of Vampires feeding from Ness, having her nearly dead, and several Vampires having Ness pinned against a tree, rock or ground, looking at her intently, feeding from her neck, some looking as if they weren't biting her, but kissing her roughly, pushing back her hair, pulling at her black tank top and shorts, becoming more and more rough. One grabbed her by the back of her head, moving forcefully, pushing back the leg of her black shorts. Ness was too weak, too close to death to stop them.

Catty: (voice over from 8.01 We Need to Talk About Sabrina) "And Ness? She's shaky. She's on edge. She... she's different. I don't know how to explain it."

From 8.01 "We Need to Talk About Sabrina", on the Lafitte Property, Dean and Ness started to dig until they dug up the uncovered bones in the grave. Dean held his arm, lowering himself into the grave, rolling up his left sleeve. His forearm was glowing red, pulsing. He cut his left arm with a large knife, holding his arm out over the grave. Red glowing liquid dripped from his arm onto the bones. The light played over the bones, vanishing. Benny offered Dean a hand. Dean shook it. Benny offered Ness a hand. Ness shook it.

From 8.05 "Blood Brother", in the Vampires' House's hallway, Two more Vampires appeared at the end of the hallway, walking in. Dean used his Purgatory Ax to behead one of them, killing him. The other Vampire ran toward Ness. Ness held the blade of her Purgatory Machete toward him, making him run himself through, taking it out, letting him fall to the floor, taking hold of the handle in both hands, swinging it at his neck, beheading him, letting the body fall.

From 8.05 "Blood Brother", in the Vampires' House's living room, Andrea snarled, transforming. Dean stabbed Andrea from behind, taking the weapon out of her back, beheading her, killing her, letting the body fall.

From 8.05 "Blood Brother", in the fuel barge, Ness was leaning against the wall. Dean was leaning forward against the table. He stood straight, turning to give Ness a look.

"Don't look at me like that, Dean," Ness told him. "I'm fine. Honest. If I wasn't, you'd know it."

Dean looked at her seriously. "Ness, really, stop with whole moving on and forgetting shtick. I've seen it on Catty enough to recognize it anywhere. Catty's the only one that would know what you're going through. And she already said that she wanted to repay you for all the times you gave her counsel sessions, so..."

"I'll talk," Ness told him. "When I'm ready. To who I want." Dean raised his eyebrows slightly. "To who has yet to be revealed."

Dean nodded sarcastically, looking away. Ness managed a small, barely noticeable smile.

From 8.05 "Blood Brother", in Dean and Ness' Motel Room, Dean nodded barely. "Sam's not gonna like it. Catty and Sabrina aren't gonna mind. But none of them know about Benny. Not everything, anyway."

"So?" Ness asked. "Crap like that with Sam, Catty and Sabrina? That's your business, Dean. Not mine. I mean, I'm not up for the whole secrecy, but I can't make you tell them."

From 8.05 "Blood Brother", on the dock, Benny, Dean, Ness, Sam, Catty and Sabrina were gathered.

Benny stepped onto the dock. "I'm Benny." Catty raised her eyebrows, looking at Dean and Ness. Benny offered them a hand. Catty slowly shook it, cautiously. "Heard a lot about the three of you. Especially Catty and Sabrina" Benny offered Sabrina a hand. Sabrina looked at his hand for a moment, shaking it, looking up at him. Benny smiled a small smile, offering a hand to Sam. Sam took it, looking at Dean and Ness, undoing the cover of a knife holster with his other hand, flexing on his knife. Sabrina and Catty watched. Ness looked down. Dean shook his head. Sam loosened his grip on his knife. Benny let go of Sam's hand. "I can see you have a lot to talk about."

Benny patted Dean and Ness on the arms, picking up his bag, stepping between Sabrina and Catty, walking away, leaving. Sabrina and Catty looked at Dean and Ness in confusion. Sam looked at Dean and Ness in angry disapproval.

Day One

Night - House - Outside

A car pulled up, parking outside a house. In a covered area next to the house, a man was underneath his car, working on it. A woman walked toward the car, standing near the man's feet.

"Hey, hon," the man told her. "Just in time. Grab me a cold one, would you?"

"Why don't you have Sara Alcott get it for you?" the woman asked angrily.

"What?" the man asked.

The woman kicked away the jack that was holding up the car, making it fall onto the man.

The man screamed. "Oh, my God! Mary, help! Mary, what are you doing? Mary, what are you doing? Mary!" Mary got into the car, starting the engine. "Help me!"

Mary drove away. The man screamed. Blood splattered a refrigerator upon which there was a large sticker that read: The South Will Rise Again

Day Two

Morning - Fat Mack's Rib Shack - Outside

Dean, Ness, Sabrina and Catty were standing outside of the Impala. Ness was checking her phone.

Sam walked up carrying bags of food and a tray of drinks. "Heads up."

Catty took two drinks from the tray, handing one to Sabrina. Sabrina took it, taking a drink. Dean took two, handing one to Ness. Sam, Catty and Sabrina walked toward the passenger side of the car. Sam stood across from Dean in the front seat. Catty and Sabrina stood across from Ness at the backseat.

"I caught wind of a case on this police scanner," Ness told them. "Sounds like our kind of thing."

"I wasn't even gone ten minutes," Sam told her.

"Okay," Ness told him. "That matters why?"

"I don't know, Ness," Sam told her sarcastically. "How about because you haven't said a word to us since Prentiss Island?"

Catty rolled her eyes, raising her eyebrows. "Here we go."

Sam looked at Ness. "What has even you speechless?"

Ness shook her head. "Because I'm not getting involved in this. This is between you guys."

Ness walked around the car to grab a bag of food from Sam, walked toward the restaurant to eat.

Sam grabbed Ness' arm to stop her. "Yes, this does involve you, Ness." Ness sighed in annoyance, turning to face Sam. "You're involved in this as much as Dean is. Why are you trying to run from it?"

"I'm not running from anything, and I'll prove it," Ness told him. "You want to talk about Benny? Fine. Let's talk."

"Okay," Sam told them. "How about he's a Vampire?"

"He's also the reason we're topside and not roasting on spits in Purgatory," Dean replied. "Anything else?"

"Don't pretend I don't get it," Sam told them. "I know you had to do what you had to down there."

"I highly doubt you get anything about Purgatory," Catty told him. "I mean, Sam, we've both been to Hell, and I can't even imagine what it's like."

"Yeah, I know, Catty, but they're out now, and Benny's still breathing," Sam told her. "I want to know why."

"He's a friend, Sam," Ness told him.

"And what about my friend, Amy?" Sam asked. "She was what? 'Cause Dean sure as hell didn't have a problem ganking her."

"Well, I guess people change don't they?" Catty asked. "We let that Werewolf Kate go, didn't we?"

"She was different," Sam told her. "Just like Sabrina's different." Dean and Ness nodded. Sam noticed the weird looks. "You think Benny's different? He tell you he's not drinking live blood, or something?" Dean and Ness didn't answer, exchanging a look. "And you believe him. Wow. Okay. You know what, Catty? You're right. People do change."

"Yeah," Dean agreed. "Ness and I got a Vampire buddy, Sabrina and Catty are paranoid and scared from a year of running, during which time you turned your phone off, Sam."

"Don't turn this on me, Dean," Sam told him.

"Look, Benny slips up and some other hunter turns his lights out, so be it," Ness told them.

"But it's not gonna be either one of you, right?" Catty asked. Dean and Ness looked at Catty in confusion. "Look, I'm not trying to start another fight or make this one worse. I'm actually curious."

Dean and Ness didn't answer, looking down.

Sabrina seemed annoyed. "Are we going or not?"

Sabrina got into the back driver's side seat, closing the door.

Catty sighed. "Sabrina..."

House - Outside

An ambulance was leaving the driveway. The Impala pulled up, parking on the street outside the house.

§

The Impala

Dean was in the driver's seat. Sam was in the passenger seat. Ness, Sabrina and Catty were in the backseat. Sam, Dean, Ness and Catty were posing as FBI.

"So, guy's old lady comes home while he's working underneath his ride, puts the pedal to the metal, and takes half his head off," Ness told them.

"What?" Sabrina asked. "That's it?"

"Yeah, in a nutshell," Ness answered. "She says she blacked out, doesn't remember a damn thing."

"She sounds like a crazy person," Sabrina told them.

"Maybe," Ness told them.

"So, how does that make this our kind of thing?" Sam asked.

"Because, Sam, Kevin's in the wind, okay?" Ness asked. "You're sulking around like a eunuch in a whorehouse, Sow and Cat are still looking over their shoulders every where they go, which is a really smart but really sad thing that they need to mull over and relax, and I can't help but ask myself, when is decapitation not my thing?"

Ness got out of the car, closing the door behind her. Sam and Catty were surprised over Ness' behavior and words. Dean wasn't surprised, getting out of the car, following Ness.

"Sabrina, stay in the car," Catty told her.

Sabrina nodded. Sam and Catty exchanged a confused look, getting out of the car, following them. Sabrina sighed, waiting in boredom.

§

House - Outside

Sam, Ness, Dean and Catty walked up to a sheriff's line outside the house, holding up their badges.

"Whoa, whoa," a Deputy told them. "FBI?"

Sam nodded. "Yeah, happened to be in the neighborhood."

Catty looked around the premises.

"First a Texas Ranger, now you guys?" the Deputy asked.

"Texas Ranger?" Dean repeated.

The Deputy nodded. "Yes, sir. Right over there."

The Deputy pointed toward the house. They followed his gaze to Garth. Garth was interviewing a witness, wearing a cowboy hat and tasseled leather jacket.

"Oh, you got to be kidding me," Ness told them. Garth took off hit hat, fanning himself. Sam, Ness, Dean and Catty walked closer. "Hey, Chuck Norris."

Garth smiled in surprise. "Ness?" He embraced Ness, pulling away. "Sam, Dean and Catty."

"Shh," Sam told him. Garth laughed, embracing Sam. "Forgot he was a hugger."

Garth pulled away, hugging Catty. Catty smiled a small smile, returning the embrace.

Garth pulled away, looking at Dean. "Come here!"

"All right," Dean told him. "Okay." Garth embraced Dean, pulling away. "We're still—we're still working here."

"Uh, you guys have no idea how much I missed you," Garth told them.

Dean looked at the witness. "Um, excuse us, would you?"

"Yeah, we'll be right back," Garth told him.

Sam, Ness, Dean, Catty and Garth walked away from the witness, slowly toward Sabrina in the Impala.

"A Texas Ranger, Garth?" Ness asked. "Seriously? We're in Missouri."

"What?" Garth asked. "Come on. I look like a funeral director in one of those. Wow. I heard some chatter you four were back in the batter's box, but I didn't believe it till now." A cell phone played Kris Kross' 'Jump'. Garth opened his jacket to reveal three phones in a row in separate pockets. "Oh, uh, one sec. Um..." He answered one of the phones. "Yo, Earl. What you got? A Revenant. Okay, uh, you'll need a casket and some silver spikes. Oh, and don't get bit. No, it won't turn you, but it will hurt like hell. Okay, so, once you got all that, nail that sucker in, bury him, and throw away the key. Okay? All right. Hasta."

Garth hung up, putting the phone away.

"What are you doing?" Dean asked.

"My job, hombre," Garth answered.

"Your job?" Dean asked.

"Yeah," Garth answered.

"And since when is giving advice your job?" Dean asked.

"Hold up," Sam told him. "Are you the new Bobby?"

"Shut up, Sam," Ness told him.

Garth nodded. "Yes."

"You shut up," Ness told him. "What?"

"Bobby was gone," Garth told them. "You guys were MIA. It was a weird time. Somebody had to step in and take up the slack. All right. Let's just get back to work, and we'll talk about this later, all right?"

Garth walked away.

"Did Garth just tell us what to do?" Catty asked.

Sam, Ness Dean and Catty exchanged a look, following after Garth.

Garth returned to the witness. "Uh, Scott Lew. These guys here are with the FBI. Mr. Lew's parents were the individuals involved in this... unfortunate situation."

"Sorry for your loss," Catty told him.

"Just a few questions, Mr. Lew," Sam told him. "Um, by any chance were your parents having... marital problems?"

"No," Scott answered. "Uh, no more than anyone else."

"What about your mother's health?" Sam asked. "Any chance this was a seizure, a stroke, anything that might help explain this?"

"I don't think so," Scott answered. "Um, they're checking her out at the, um, hospital right now."

"What about stranger behavior?" Dean asked.

"Stranger?" Scott repeated. "How?"

"Hearing voices, seeing things," Dean answered. "Your mother mention anything like that?'

"My parents were married for 30 years," Scott told them. "High school sweethearts. There's no good explanation for why this happened, no matter where you want to look."

"Okay, well, thank you, Scott," Garth told him. "We'll be in touch." Scott walked away, leaving. Catty looked over Garth, slightly impressed with his sudden professionalism. Garth noticed. "What?"

"How did you get this far?" Catty asked. Garth opened his mouth to speak. Catty pointed at him. "Don't answer that." She looked around to see that they were the only ones left on the crime scene, everybody else leaving or already gone. Catty looked at Garth. "Hey, you wanna know what I've been up for the past year?"

"Yeah, an explanation would be nice," Garth answered.

Catty smiled, walking toward the Impala. Garth looked at Sam, Ness and Dean in confusion. Sam, Ness and Dean nodded for him to follow, following Catty.

Catty looked around, unsettled. She opened the back door to the Impala. "Garth, I believe that you've heard all about my daughter..." Sabrina stepped out of the car, turning to face them. "Sabrina."

Garth looked between them in shocked confusion, getting excited.

"Yes, way," Sabrina told him.

Catty smiled. "Sabrina, this is our friend Garth. He's a good guy. A hunter, like us."

Sabrina looked at Garth. "Hi."

"Hi, there," Garth told her. He looked from Sam, Ness and Dean to Catty and Sabrina. "This is amazing." Catty smiled a small smile. "And no offense, but, uh, why is Sabrina here at a crime scene?"

"A, 'cause I'm too paranoid to leave Sabrina alone and have her taken away again, and B, because Sabrina can find things that we can't," Catty answered.

Sabrina smiled. "Wanna see?"

§

Later

Sam was on one knee using an EMF reader in the covered area where the father/husband had worked on his car and died. "No EMF. No traces of sulfur anywhere. Like I thought. Bust."

Sabrina was walking around the covered area, looking around, using sense of smell.

"Hold on there, Sam," Garth told him. "There's a lot of things to factor in here. Uh, it happened last night, so the readings could be cold by now."

"Good point," Ness told him.

Sabrina seemed to smell something, turning in the direction it came from.

"And, uh, even if there was any sulfur, Barney Fife and his crew probably contaminated the whole crime scene and any evidence that was here with it," Garth told them.

"Wow," Catty told them. "He's on a roll."

"That's one word for it," Sam told them.

Sabrina knelt next to the car jack that was in the way. "Uh, guys, I think I found something."

"You need a little help there?" Garth asked. Sabrina pushed the car jack aside as if it was nothing. "Or not."

There was green goo on the concrete where the car jack at been.

"Is that gun, or is the Ectoplasm?" Dean asked.

"Ectoplasm is usually black, right?" Sam asked.

Sabrina dabbed her finger in the goo, sniffing, grimacing. "Not gum. Ecto... Aunt Ness, what's Ectoplasm?"

"It's what a Ghost creates when it gets mad," Ness answered. "Uh, like, really mad."

"Ghosts?" Sabrina repeated.

"Yeah, Sabrina, one of the things that you are not," Ness told her.

Sabrina smiled, excited.

One of Garth's cell phones played Kool Moe Dee's "Wild Wild West". He pulled it out of his jacket, answering it. "Uh, Ranger McCrae here."

"One of those things rings Hammer, I'm throwing down," Dean told them.

Garth spoke to his phone. "Oh, great. Okay. Okay." He wrote something on his palm. "Thanks, Doc." He hung up, putting the phone away, looking at us. "Asked the coroner to drop me a line in case the autopsy turned up anything... unusual. And guess what. Our dead guy had the word 'Alcott'..." He showed them his palm, on which he had written the word. "Carved into his chest."

"With what?" Sam asked.

"Coroner's best guess?" Garth asked. "His wife Mary's fingernails."

§

Hospital - Mary's Room

Sam, Ness, Dean, and Garth were speaking with Mary Lew. Mary was handcuffed to her hospital bed. A Sheriff stood guard outside the room.

"Mrs. Lew, can you tell us what happened?" Sam asked.

"I was at the store getting groceries, and the next thing I know, my son Scott finds me in the driveway," Mary told them. "And Chester was..."

"Do you remember anything at all about what happened?" Ness asked. "Um... Chester dying?"

"Not really," Mary answered. "Bits and pieces, I guess."

Garth started to chuckle. He looked at Sam, Ness and Dean, turning his chuckle into a cough.

Dean looked at Mary. "Such as?"

"I remember his screams," Mary told them. "The smell of burnt rubber, and... I remember feeling so angry. Just uncontrollable rage, like I wasn't myself. And after it was over, all that anger was just gone."

"Uh, ma'am, does the word 'Alcott' mean anything to you?" Garth asked.

Mary clenched a hand into a fist, tugging against the handcuff chaining her to the bed. "What does she have to do with anything?"

"It's a she?" Sam asked.

"My husband, Chester, and I were going steady in high school for a few years already when we had a big fight," Mary told them.

"What about?" Dean asked.

"Something stupid, I'm sure," Mary answered. "It was around prom, and so he took Sara Alcott as his date instead of me."

"So, this Sara Alcott was a rival for your husband's affections?" Ness asked.

"Sara had one night with him, whereas I was with Chester from 37 years," Mary told them, starting to cry.

"Of course," Sam told her. "Right. Sure. Um, just one more question. Um... is... Ms. Alcott still alive?"

"As far as I know, yes," Mary answered.

"Thank you very much, Mrs. Lew," Dean told her.

Mary nodded.

§

Outside

Catty and Sabrina were leaning against the Impala outside the hospital. Sam, Ness, Dean and Garth were standing in front of them.

"Let me get this straight," Catty told them. "This poor guy goes to prom with some girl over 30 years ago, and because of that, he is now a pancake?"

"I mean, if this is a Ghost, maybe it's some sort of possession," Ness told them.

"What are you talking about?" Sam asked. "You heard her. Alcott's alive."

"Well, we're definitely gonna want to talk to her," Garth told them.

"Yeah, sounds like a plan," Sabrina told them. "Did we eat yet?"

§

Night - Diner

Sam, Dean, Ness, Catty, Sabrina and Garth sat at a table, eating. Sam had a chicken salad. Dean had a cheese hamburger. Ness had pizza. Catty had chili cheese fries. Sabrina had spaghetti and meatballs. Garth had fried chicken.

A waitress brought another plate, placing it down. "There you go."

"Mm," Garth hummed. "Thanks. Keep them coming."

"All right," the waitress told them, walking away, leaving.

Garth spoke with his mouth full. "So, Catty, give me the skinny. How's it like to have Sabrina?"

Catty glanced around the restaurant, trying not to be paranoid. "Good."

"And you just took the year off to raise Sabrina?" Garth asked. Sabrina scoffed. Garth looked between them. "I'm missing something."

"Yeah, uh, Garth, remember how everyone wanted Sabrina when she was with Crowley?" Catty asked. Garth nodded. "Things haven't changed."

"So, what?" Garth asked. "You've been..." Catty gave him a look. Garth smirked in approval, impressed. "You sly cat. You and Sabrina avoided all of those things coming after you for a whole year? So, when I said you four were MIA, you and Sabrina were really MIA." Catty nodded. "Well, I guess that explains why you look so raggedly paranoid like you're expecting some monster to come crashing in through the door at any second, Catty." Catty looked away in annoyance. "Don't worry, Sabrina. If anyone can keep you safe and defy all rations rules of the world, it's Catty." Sabrina nodded once awkwardly, looking at her food, continuing to eat. "So, Dean, Ness, where were you this past year?"

"Why don't we save what we did on our summer vacation for another time?" Dean asked.

"Aw, come on," Garth told them.

"All right," Ness told him. "We were in Purgatory."

"Like the Purgatory Purgatory?" Garth asked.

"No, the one in Miami," Ness told him sarcastically.

"Man, that's balls," Garth told them.

"That's not how you say 'balls'," Ness told him.

"So, how'd you get out?" Garth asked.

Sam, Sabrina and Catty looked at Dean and Ness because they didn't know the full story either. Sam made more of a show of looking at Dean and Ness than Sabrina and Catty did. Ness looked at Dean.

Dean looked at a Confederate flag on the wall. "What's up with all the, uh, hillbilly hankies? These people know the Civil War's over, right?"

"Mm, that's a touchy subject around these parts," Ness told them. "See, Missouri was a border state. So, half the men were Confederate, the other half were the Union."

Sam nodded sarcastically, knowing they were trying to change the subject.

"Aunt Ness, how do you seem to know everything?" Sabrina asked.

"Oh, I wouldn't say that I know everything, Sabrina," Ness told her. "Just more than any of you do."

"All right, all right, showoff," Dean told her. "Quit bragging."

Ness smiled a small smile.

On the Road - Car

Scott was driving. His phone rang. He pulled over to a stop, answering his phone. "Hey, hon." A man walked toward the grocery store Scott had parked outside. "Uh, just, uh, grabbing some joe on the way to the hospital. Gonna bring Mom her stuff." The man saw Scott, waving. "Oh, crap. Jeff's here. Don't worry. I'll be fine. Okay." Jeff walked into the store. "Love you."

Scott hung up, taking an asthma inhaler, inhaling from it. He took some money from a bag next to him.

§

Grocery Store

Scott walked in. Black goo ran from one of his ears. He started to pour himself a cup of coffee.

Jeff walked toward Scott. "Hey, Scott, how's... Uh, look, I heard about what happened with your folks. I'm really sorry. If there's--there's anything--I mean, anything--that I can do, just--just ask, man. Please."

"How about getting me my money back, Jeff?" Scott demanded, flinging the hot coffee in Jeff's face.

Jeff fell to the floor, yelling in pain. Scott took a shovel from a rack nearby, stabbing Jeff with it. Blood splattered a refrigerated cabinet. Scott stabbed Jeff several more times with the shovel, dropping it to the floor, turning away. He looked up at a security mirror. Scott's reflection flickered. A reflection appeared as a Confederate soldier with gray skin.

§

Day Three

Morning - Grocery Store

Jeff's body laid on the floor, covered with a bloodstained sheet. Sam, Dean, Catty, Ness and Sabrina stood nearby.

"So, first the mom goes 'Natural Born Killer', and now the son?" Dean asked. "Well, what do we got? A Ghost with an Oedipus complex?" Sam, Catty and Ness looked at him in confusion. "I don't know what that means."

Sabrina looked at the bloodstained sheet, turning around, stepping down the aisle, turning to face the wall. "Guys. Check this out."

Sam, Dean, Catty and Ness walked closer, looking at the wall at the end of the aisle, unable to see anything.

"What is it?" Catty asked.

"I smell blood," Sabrina answered.

"What, Scott wiped it away or something?" Sam asked.

Sabrina shook her head. "I have no idea. I can't see it, but I can smell it."

Dean took out a black light, shining it over the wall to reveal the word 'Sussex' in blood, turning the light off. "'Sussex'. What is that, another name?"

"I don't know," Ness told them. Garth walked toward them in his Ranger jacket and a baseball cap. "Hey, what'd the cops say?"

Garth was about to take a step toward them.

"Wait," Sabrina told him.

Garth looked at Sabrina in confusion. Sabrina looked at the floor.

Garth followed her gaze to the green Ectoplasm on the floor. "Thanks for the heads up, Sabrina." Sabrina smiled. Garth looked at Sam, Dean, Catty and Ness. "Not much. Uh, Scott insisted he wasn't in control of himself. Says all he remembers is a red hot rage."

"So, what is this?" Catty asked. "Some—some kind of family curse?"

Ness looked at the hat Garth was wearing. "Is that my dad's hat?"

"Oh, yeah," Garth answered. "Sure is. We worked a Rougarou case together a few years back. He left it in my car, so I kept it as a..." Ness took the cap off of Garth's head. "Memento. What are you doing?"

"That's not how you wear it," Ness told him. Garth looked at her in confusion. Ness looked at the others.  "Anyway, surveillance is up. But something is all screwy with it."

§

Guard Room

Ness showed the others the security footage of Scott stabbing Jeff with a shovel on a TV screen on the wall. Scott's head was obscured by white light, along with a white line across the screen.

"You guys see the head?" Dean asked. "Ever seen anything like that before?"

"A few times, with a few different creatures," Ness answered. "It's rare. I'm gonna have to hit some of my dad's old stuff." She looked at Sam. "What did you do with the stuff that we kept of my dad's, the research?"

"In the storage locker," Sam answered.

Ness nodded. "All right. So, I'm gonna go see what I can find. Oh, I'm thinking we need to talk to Sara Alcott. I found her, although, these days, she goes by Sara Brown."

Sam nodded. "Okay. How about this? Garth, you help Ness look through Bobby's stuff. It's gonna take a while." Garth nodded. "Catty, Sabrina, you two can go back to the motel, and just wait for us to get back. Meanwhile, Catty, try to find out what Sussex means. Dean and I'll go check out Sara Brown."

"Okay," Catty told them.

"Word," Garth told them.

"Awesome," Dean told them.

Sabrina looked up at Sam. "Meathead."

Sabrina walked out of the room, leaving.

Sam looked at Catty, giving her a confused hand gesture. "Catty, why did Sabrina..."

Catty shook her head, smiling. "Sabrina doesn't want to stay at the motel or in the car anymore. She gets too bored and impatient."

"Like you were when you weren't old enough to do what we do, Sabrina's age," Sam told her.

Catty rolled her eyes, pushing Sam lightly toward the door. "Let's go."

§

House - Outside

Sam and Dean were sitting in chairs on the porch, drinking iced tea, sitting across from a woman, Sara Brown/Alcott.

"Mm," Sam hummed.

"Now, I know you didn't come all this way for my sweet tea, Agents," Sara told them.

"No," Sam answered. "Um, actually, we're--we're here about Chester Lew."

"Oh, yes," Sara told them. "So sad."

"It is," Dean told her. "Is it true you and Chester... dated a ways back?"

"Well, that is an odd question for the FBI, isn't it?" Sara asked.

"You wouldn't believe the awkward questions I've had to ask people," Dean told her.

Sara chuckled. "Yeah. Well, yes. Yes. Me and that old tomcat, Chester? We went to prom together. That's about it."

"And that's all?" Sam asked.

"Well, I wasn't exactly a good girl, if that's what you mean," Sara told them. "And after that, I--I thought that Chester and I were gonna be hot and heavy. But it just wasn't meant to be. And, uh, a week later, he eloped with Mary."

"Did you speak much to Mary or Chester again after that?" Sam asked.

"Well, I'd see them about, you know," Sara answered. "Picnics and such. But... Mary kept Chester on a pretty short leash. Honestly, I'd moved on, but it seems she never did."

"And why do you think that is?" Dean asked.

"Well, I guess in her mind, I was a reminder of Chester's betrayal," Sara answered.

Dean nodded. "Huh."

"So, if that's all..." Sara trailed off.

"Yes, uh, thank you very much for your help," Sam told her.

Sara stood, walking inside. Sam and Dean walked down the porch steps toward the Impala.

Sam hesitated, sighing. "Dean--"

"Sam," Dean replied.

"Dean, why didn't you tell us?" Sam asked. Dean stopped. "And why are you and Ness trusting a Vampire? I mean, why didn't you just..."

Dean turned to face Sam. "Let him rot? Because he saved us, Sam. End of story."

Sam shook his head. "No. There's more to this than just that. I know that. Catty and Sabrina know that. Why can't you just tell us the whole story?"

"'Cause it's not my place to tell," Dean answered, turning toward the Impala.

Sam frowned in confusion, gazing off thoughtfully.

Flashback

Kermit, Texas

Night - Motel Room

An empty bottle of alcohol laid on its side next to two glasses on a table. Clothes were strewn across the floor, coffee table and sofa. Sam and Amelia were in bed together.

Amelia had her head on Sam's chest. "It's been a long time since I let myself go like that."

"Yeah, I know what you mean," Sam told her.

"You asked me if I lost someone," Amelia told him. "I did. My husband. He died in Afghanistan eight months ago."

"That must have been, um..." Sam trailed off. "I... I can't imagine."

"Yeah," Amelia told him. "We were together forever. Or at least it seemed that way. Then one day, Don just enlists. Didn't ask me. Just said something about wanting to do the right thing. Next thing I know, he's off overseas. And I'm all alone. I got a couple letters, some phone calls, and then a knock at the door. Just like that. And everywhere I looked, all I could see was judgment and pity and just this constant reminder of Don everywhere. So I moved here. And became even more of a hot mess than I already was. And you hit a dog."

Now

Day - Sara Brown's House - Outside

Sam pulled out of his reverie, looking back at the house, walking toward Dean in the Impala.

Joined Motel Room

Catty was on her laptop.

Sabrina sat at the table, looking at John's Journal. "Why we always got to stay behind?"

"Because the interviews are something that you can't be apart of," Catty answered. "I highly doubt that someone would mistake you for an FBI Agent, Sabrina."

"But I got to be in on the crime scenes," Sabrina told her.

"Yeah, because no one would have had to see you," Catty told her. "You snuck in and out. And it's a good thing you did, Sabrina. You found the Ectoplasm and the Sussex word on the wall when we couldn't see it. Any more questions?"

Sabrina sighed. "No."

"Okay," Catty told her. Sabrina looked down at John's Journal. "What are you doing with that?"

"Trying to help," Sabrina answered innocently.

Catty smiled a small smile, looking at her laptop.

§

Motel Room 2

Ness and Garth were going through Bobby's research. Ness was drinking beer. Garth reached for a beer on the table nearby.

Ness took it out of his reach. "Easy there, flyweight. Last time you drank a beer, I had to pick you up off the floor."

Garth smiled. "You're such an idjit."

"Idjit's supposed to be used angrily," Ness told him. "Okay? Not happy. If you're gonna butcher it, don't say it at all."

"Whoa, then," Garth told her. "Okay. N--none of my business, but... this have anything to do with... Purgatory? I mean, I noticed something different about you right off. And I noticed that people are pushing too hard for the truth, which would set anybody on edge."

"No, you had it right," Ness told him. "It's none of your business."

"Okay," Garth told her. "It just seems that you're--"

"I'm fine," Ness told him. "Can we get back to work?"

"Yeah," Garth answered.

"Okay," Ness told him.

"All right," Garth told her. "Just, uh... just letting you know that I'm here for you, for anything. I know sometimes Bobby, he would--"

"You're not my dad," Ness told him. "Okay? You're never gonna be my dad, so stop. Please. I know you're just taking what he showed you, and what I showed you, and trying to do something with it, but--" Ness couldn't finish, turning away, holding her head in her hands, closing her eyes, sighing. "My God."

Garth looked at her in concern. "Ness?" Ness looked up. "What happened to you?"

Ness took a deep breath, getting under control. "Nothing. I'm fine."

Garth stepped closer. "Aw. Somebody need a hug?"

Ness shook her head. "No." Garth embraced her anyway. Ness sighed, calming down. "Garth, I'm fine."

"Clearly," Garth told her sarcastically, pulling away.

Ness was relaxed, sighing, hesitating. "I'm gonna see if I can find something in this bourbon-drenched book of his so I can get the hell out of Dixie, all right?" Garth nodded. Ness' phone rang. She took a deep breath, answering, putting the phone on speaker. "Yeah, you're on speaker."

Catty's voice was on the other line. "Hey. 'Sussex' is not a who. It's a what." She was still in the joined motel room with Sabrina. "It's a business that went belly-up about a year ago." She looked at the screen to see an article about the bankruptcy of Scott Lew and Jeff Belt's tire company. "So, the guy that Scott brained? His old business partner. Ran the company into the ground."

Sam and Dean were on the road, speaking into the phone on speaker, three-way calling.

"So, Scott had beef with Jeff," Dean told them.

"Looks like," Catty asked.

"All right, well, Sara Alcott's clean, if you look past the fact that she and Chester knocked boots on prom night back in the day," Sam told them.

"Okay, so..." Ness trailed off. "Mary has a grudge against Sara, and Scott has a grudge against Jeff."

"Besides the fast this is making my head hurt, how does this add up to a Ghost?" Garth asked.

Ness was looking at Bobby's Journal.  She read a page about Spectres. "Guys. My dad has it right here. We're dealing with a Spectre."

"Which equals Ghost, right?" Garth asked.

"Mm, yeah, kind of," Ness answered. "A Spectre is an avenging Ghost. It, uh, it possesses you and finds out whatever betrayals you're feeling and forces you to act on them."

"Bobby say anything in there about how we hunt these things?" Catty asked.

"Uh, the last Spectre he encountered rose shortly after someone desecrated a nearby grave," Ness told them, sitting at the table at her laptop, searching for 'grave, vandalism, Kearney' in the Federal Criminal Database. "Which..." A Kearney Sheriff's Office investigation report appeared on the screen. "Uh, there was a grave desecrated locally three days ago. It says here... Oh. You got to be kidding me."

Garth looked at Ness in confusion. "What?"

§

Cemetery

Sam, Dean, Ness, Catty, Garth (wearing normal clothes), and Sabrina walked toward a tomb outside which a uniformed guard stood.

"The Unknown Soldier?" Dean asked. "You're kidding me, right?"

"Mary Lew steamrolled her husband the day after this place was vandalized," Ness told them. "Do the math."

"But I thought the Unknown Soldier was buried in Arlington," Sam told them.

"Yeah, but this is the Confederate tomb of the Unknown Soldier," Ness told them. "See, the idea was, they took a faceless, nameless soldier they couldn't identify, and they buried him here to commemorate all the soldiers who died."

Sabrina looked up at Ness. "You're like a wiki of all things weird."

Ness messed with Sabrina's hair. "Thank you, Sabrina."

Sabrina smiled. Ness smiled a small smile.

"Okay, uh, what about the guard?" Catty asked.

"Uh, he's ceremonial," Ness told them. "Gone by dusk."

"So, then we do this tonight?" Dean asked.

"Yeah," Garth answered.

"Burn a Confederate soldier's bones in a town full of rednecks?" Sam asked. "Sure."

§

Night - Unknown Soldier's Mausoleum

Sam, Dean, Catty, Ness, Sabrina and Garth walked in.

"Place doesn't look disturbed to me," Sam told them. "What's the police report say?"

"Uh, they think it was just some kids messing around," Ness answered. "They, uh, they found some beer cans, some graffiti. Oh, and the casket was open when they got here, but they closed that back up. But not before Casper had a chance to make a run for it."

"So, what?" Sabrina asked. "If they never touched this, none of this would be happening?"

"Yeah, according to Dad," Ness answered.

"All right, well, let's get this party started," Dean told them. Sabrina looked at the floor, kneeling to the concrete, picking up a circle of thin cord from the floor. "Sammy, you want to give us a hand?"

Sam, Dean and Garth moved the lid of the casket. Sabrina stood next to Catty and Sabrina at the casket. They looked inside the casket to the skeleton in a uniform, with a sword and gun.

"Whoa," Garth told them. "Check out this hardware. Do you guys know how much this is worth?"

"Yeah, but why open it up if you're not gonna take anything?" Dean asked, pouring salt on the bones.

"I don't know," Sam told them, pouring lighter fluid on the bones. "Maybe the cops showed up and they had to split fast."

Garth looked at Ness. "You sure this will work, even on a Spectre?"

"Yeah," Ness answered. "It's still a Ghost. You burn its bones, the Ghost disappears. And in case the regular salt and burn doesn't work... Sabrina?"

Sabrina smiled, reaching inside the casket.

"Sabrina," Garth told her to stop her. "All right. All right. Uh, I kind of feel like we should say something, all right? Don't you? Just... a little."

Sabrina looked at Catty and Ness. "Sure." She looked at the skeleton. "We won."

Sabrina reached inside to touch the uniform hat on the skeleton's skull, setting it ablaze with white flame, backing away. They watched the white flames burn around the body, engulfing in the casket.

Catty looked at Sabrina. "Show off."

Sabrina smiled.

Day Four

Morning - Sheriff's Station

The Sheriff put a folder on a Deputy's desk. "Write that up for me, would you, Doug?"

Sheriff walked toward his desk. Doug watched him go.

Scott's voice came from the cell block. "Help!"

§

Cell Block

Doug walked in.

Scott was in a holding cell, holding a hand to his chest, struggling to breathe. "Please."

"Hey, you okay?" Doug asked.

"Need my... asthma... inhaler," Scott told him. "From evidence. Please."

§

Evidence Room

Doug walked in, grabbing an envelope from the shelf, tipping the inhaler and a set of keys into his hand. There was a strange noise. Black goo ran from Doug's left ear.

§

Main Room

Doug took his rifle from a cabinet, aiming it at the Sheriff. "Why don't you write your own reports, Sheriff?"

The Sheriff screamed. Doug shot the Sheriff, killing him.

§

The crime scene was being cleared out, mostly empty, aside from Sam, Dean, Catty, Ness, Sabrina and Garth.

Sabrina sniffed, looking down on the desk. "Ten bucks says Deputy Doug had a fight with his boss."

"How can you be so sure, Sabrina?" Garth asked. Sabrina pointed to the green Ectoplasm on the Sheriff's tape dispenser. "Aw, what the hell?"

"Maybe we torched the wrong redneck," Dean told them.

"Or maybe not," Ness told them. "Maybe an object was removed from the grave, something the Spectre's attaching itself to."

"Like Bobby's Flask," Dean told them.

"Um, I don't know, guys," Garth told them. "You saw what I saw. Those kids didn't take anything."

"Or they did," Sabrina told them.

"And this Spectre hitched a ride with it," Catty agreed.

"And whoever has the object gets possessed," Sam told them.

"Okay," Ness told them. "So, who's got the object, and, more importantly, who do they got a grudge against?"

§

Holding Cell

Sam, Dean, Ness and Garth were in a holding cell with Doug.

"All right," Sam told him. "We need you to focus, Deputy. Other lives depend on it. Tell me what happened after you shot the sheriff."

"I was on the ground," Doug told them. "I think Karl tackled me, and I asked him what happened."

"And?" Ness asked.

"He didn't answer me," Doug told them. "He just took my gun and walked away."

"Did he say where he was going?" Ness asked.

"I guess... I must have hurt him, too," Doug told them. "He said he was going to the hospital."

§

Outside

Dean, Sam, Garth, Ness, Catty and Sabrina were standing next to the Impala.

"Ness and I'll ask out about Deputy Karl, ask what kind of grudges that he would have," Sam told them. "Sabrina, Catty, find out what you can about the Unknown Soldier. Dean, Garth, you got the hospital?"

"Yeah," Dean answered.

Dean and Garth walked toward Garth's Car, getting inside, driving away, leaving. Sabrina and Catty turned toward the Impala, getting inside, driving away, leaving. Sam and Ness exchanged a look.

Ness turned toward the station. "All right, let's see who Deputy Karl had a grudge against so we can help stop him from killing them."

"Hey, uh, Ness," Sam told her.

"If this is about Purgatory and Benny and you being pissed at me, take it up with Dean," Ness told him. "I'm not getting any more involved than I already am."

"Oh, you've been involved since the jump," Sam told her. "I just wanna find out what's going on. What aren't you and Dean telling me? What aren't you guys telling Catty and Sabrina?"

Ness turned to face him. "It doesn't matter, Sam. It's over. It's done. Dean and I are back. Can we just let it go so we can all move on?"

"Move on from what, Ness?" Sam asked. "See, I know a little more about you and Dean than you give me credit for, and the only time you get cagey and secretive like this is if you're protecting someone. And I don't know why you would be protecting Benny, so..."

Ness shook her head. "This isn't about Benny. Trust me."

"Then who?" Sam asked.

Ness didn't answer, looking toward the station. "We should get in there and find out what we can. The Ghost's not gonna gank itself, so..."

Ness turned around, walking into the station. Sam hesitated outside.

Flashback

Kermit, Texas

Day - Motel Room

Sam woke, rolling over in bed. "Hey."

Amelia was dressed, carrying a handbag. "Hey. Uh, just lock up when you leave. I'm late."

Amelia picked up her keys.

"Wait," Sam told her. "What?"

"I just think it's better if neither of us get the wrong idea here," Amelia told him.

"O--Okay," Sam told her.

"And I know I said a lot of things last night, and I know I can't ask you to forget them," Amelia told him. "But just... do."

"Why?" Sam asked.

"Because I don't need your pity," Amelia answered. "I don't need you looking at me the way they all--Like that."

"Wait, um, you think this is pity?" Sam asked. "Amelia, I'm glad you told me about Don. It helps me understand."

"How messed up I am?" Amelia asked. "You think I don't know that? You don't have to feel sorry for me, Sam."

"I didn't mean it like that," Sam told her.

"Yeah, well, like I said, I'm late," Amelia told him. "So..."

Amelia walked out, leaving. Sam watched her go.

Now

Hospital - Outside

A Deputy's vehicle pulled up outside the hospital. A Deputy, presumably Karl, grabbed a rifle, getting out. He glanced in the side rear view mirror to see his reflection change to that of the Unknown Soldier.

§

Library

A librarian led Sabrina and Catty through the library.

"You do know there is a good reason he's called the Unknown Soldier, right?" the librarian asked.

"Right," Catty answered. "Uh, Sabrina and I were just hoping maybe a theory or two had been a floated around over the years. Something local, maybe? See, Sabrina has this very big project for school, and it's kind of short notice."

The librarian nodded. "There is one."

The librarian took a book from a shelf. Sabrina looked at Catty in confusion. Catty shrugged.

§

Hospital - Outside

Dean and Garth got out of Garth's Car, walking quickly toward the hospital.

Dean was on the phone. "Hey, Ness, please tell me you and Sam got something so we know who to save from this guy."

§

Inside - Waiting Room

A woman and a man in a hospital employee uniforms were laughing together on opposite sides of the reception desk. A shot shattered a pane of glass next to them. They screamed, ducking for cover.

Karl pointed his rifle at the man, having black goo leading out of his right ear. "Hey, Earl. You remember me? I stole second."

"Karl?" Earl asked. "What the hell are you doing? Why are you doing--"

"Why am I gonna make mustard from your brain stem?" Karl asked. "I don't know. Why did you call me out, Earl?"

"I'm sorry," Earl told him.

Karl pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't fire.

Dean walked closer. "Looks like you're shooting blanks."

Karl turned to face Dean and Garth.

Garth punched Karl in the face, holding his hand in pain. "Dang it!"

Karl used the rifle to hit Garth in the face, making him fall and hit his head against the wall. Garth fell unconscious. Karl tried to hit Dean with the rifle. Dean caught the rifle, punching Karl in the face.

"Hey, that tickled," Karl told him, punching Dean in the face, making him fall to the floor.

Karl grabbed Dean, pulling him to his feet.

§

Library

The librarian was turning pages in a book for Catty and Sabrina to see. "Corporal Collins of the Union shot and killed his brother, Vance, who fought for the Confederacy. Local boys."

They saw a photograph of Vance in the book.

"Wait," Sabrina told her. "So two brothers fought on two sides of the Civil War?"

"Legend has it that Vance swore vengeance on his brother with his dying breath," the librarian told them, "Years later, consumed by guilt, no doubt, the corporal dug his brother up where he'd buried him on the battlefield and brought him home."

"Are you suggesting this Vance guy is the Unknown Soldier?" Catty asked.

"That's one theory, anyway," the librarian told them.

"What's that?" Sabrina asked, pointing to the photograph, at the necklace that Vance was wearing with a round disk pendant as small as a penny.

The cord that Vance was wearing along with the pendant was the same cord that Sabrina had found in the crypt on the floor.

§

Hospital - Waiting Room

Karl was gripping Dean by his throat.

"Karl, listen, I know the Spectre's turning the temperature up in there," Dean told him. "So just tell me what the object is, and we'll send this joker home."

"I don't think so," Karl told him. "There's unfinished business, thanks to you." He smelled Dean. "Oh, the Spectre likes you."

"Oh, yeah?" Dean asked. "Why don't you tell him to come on out here and we'll make promise bracelets?"

Karl threw Dean onto and over a desk, making him fall to the floor.

§

Library

The librarian explained to Catty and Sabrina. "Most of the soldiers were poor farmers, so..." She turned to another page in the book, which showed a close-up of Vance's necklace, a 1859 Indian Head penny on the cord. "The families would give them a penny on a string. It was for good luck, and in case they ever got lost, they always had a penny for food or drink."

Sabrina looked at Catty. "A penny."

§

Hospital - Waiting Room

Karl held up a penny with a hole drilled through it, kneeling next to Dean on the floor. "Here. Have a taste."

Karl pressed the penny into Dean's hand.

§

Library - Outside

Sabrina and Catty walked out of the library, toward the Impala. Catty tried to make a call.

Dean: (voicemail)"It's me. Do what you gotta."

"Dean, hey," Catty told him. "There was a string on the floor of the tomb. It used to hold an old penny. That's the object. We're coming right now."

§

Motel - Outside

Sabrina and Catty got out of the Impala, walking toward Sam and Ness.

"Hey," Sabrina told them. "Have you seen Uncle Dean and Garth?"

"They said they would be back soon," Ness told them.

Sam nodded, walking toward the room.

§

Joined Motel Room - Sam's Side

Sam, Catty and Ness walked in.

Ness was on the phone, seeing Dean standing behind the door, his phone ringing on the table next to him. "Dean?" She hung up. "We went to the hospital. You're not answering your phone."

Dean poured a line of salt in front of the door, locking it.

§

Outside

Sabrina tried to open the door to no avail because of the salt. "Uncle Dean?"

§

Dean had black Ectoplasm running from his right ear, pointing a gun at Sam. "You should have looked for us when we were in Purgatory."

Now

Day - Joined Motel Room - Sam's Side

Dean was still aiming his gun at Sam.

"Come on, Dean," Ness told him. "I know it's not you in there pulling the strings."

Catty reached a hand toward the weapon on her belt.

Dean noticed. "Don't!" Catty stopped. Dean looked at Sam. "You never even wanted this life. Always blamed me for pulling you back into it. Always blamed Catty, too."

"That's not true," Sam told him.

"Really?" Dean asked. "'Cause everything you've ever done since you climbed into my ride has been to deceive us."

"What do you want me to say?" Sam asked. "That I've made mistakes? I've made mistakes, Dean."

"That's not Dean, Sam," Catty told him.

"Shut up!" Dean told her. He looked at Sam. "Mistakes? Well, let's go through some of Sammy's greatest hits. Drinking Demon blood, check. Being in cahoots with Ruby. Not telling me and Catty that you lost your soul. While soulless, you manipulated Ava into thinking that the changes she saw in you were actually the changes Ava saw in herself. Or how about running around with Samuel for a whole year, letting Catty, Ness and me think that you were dead while you're doing all kinds of crazy? And let's not forget the time that you left Sabrina and Catty to fight in their battle, their fight against every monster, every Demon, and every Angel in the world. Yes, you tried to find Catty and Sabrina, but you gave up, Sam. Brothers or uncles are not supposed to give up when the only two people in your family that you thought were alive were on every hit list in the world. Those aren't mistakes, Sam. Those are choices!"

§

Outside

Sabrina was still trying to open.

Garth ran closer, breathless. "Sabrina? What'd I miss?"

"Uncle Dean's possessed," Sabrina answered. "Uncle Dean is really mad at Uncle Sammy. He put salt in front of the door." She tried to open the door to no avail. "Uncle Dean!"

"Hang on, Sabrina," Garth told her, taking out his lock pick.

Sabrina stepped back.

Catty, Ness, Sam and Dean could see the lock being picked. Dean fired a shot at the door.

Outside

Garth and Sabrina jumped, ducking slightly to avoid being hit by the bullet that passed through the door.

Sabrina covered her ears, squealing in surprise. "Uncle Dean!"

Ness stepped closer to the window barely, seeing that salt was lining the window, too, keeping Sabrina out.

Outside

Sabrina took Garth's hand, leading him around the building.

Dean aimed the gun at Ness. Ness stepped away from the window. Dean pointed the gun at Sam.

"All right," Sam told him. "You said it. We've all played a little fast and loose."

"Yeah, Catty and I might have lied, but we never once betrayed you," Dean told him. "We never once left you to die. And for what? A girl? You left not just me, Catty and Sabrina to die, but Ness, to die for a girl? All because you promised Ava that you would move on? Is it the promise to real Ava or hallucination Ava that got you to turn back on your family?"

Sam pushed the gun aside, punching Dean in the face, pushing him into a glass pane, making it break, punching Dean two more times. Dean backhand punched Sam in the face, headbutting him, kicking him across the room. Sam fell to the floor, pulling himself up to lean against the sofa. Catty and Ness stood in between Sam and Dean, keeping them back.

"Whoa!" Catty told them. "Hey!"

"Stop it," Ness told them, putting a hand on Dean's chest to keep him back.

"Ness, don't," Sam told her.

"No, he won't kill me," Ness told them. "You're not gonna shoot me, are you, Dean?"

"Move," Dean told her.

"Ness..." Catty trailed off.

"Come on, Dean," Ness told him. "You do not want to kill Sam. You--you've been protecting both Sam and Catty your whole life. We've been helping Catty protect Sabrina ever since we got back. Dean, don't stop now."

"He left us to rot in Purgatory, Ness," Dean told her. "He gave up on trying to find Catty and Sabrina, and because of that, both Catty could have died, and Sabrina could have been taken, or both of them could have been taken."

"Catty told Sam to stay away from her and Sabrina, Dean," Ness told him. "Catty and Sabrina wanted to protect Sam. I know you want to protect Sabrina, Catty and Sam, so please listen to me."

Outside - Fire Escape

Garth and Sabrina were climbing the fire escape. Garth reached the window leading to the joined room on Catty and Sabrina's side, seeing that the window was also lined with salt, using two fingers to break the line of salt. Sabrina climbed in through the window.

Ness looked at Dean. "We got out. Catty and Sabrina are okay. They're alive. I know you're angry. But, Dean, you got to fight this thing. Do not do this. Just let it go. Come on, Dean."

Dean hesitated, about to pull the trigger. Sabrina appeared next to them, catching Dean's wrist, pointing it to the ceiling, making the fire shoot at the ceiling instead of anyone else, twisting the gun out of Dean's wrist, making him fall to his knees. Dean tried to stand. Sabrina punched him in the face, making him fall to the floor. The penny fell out of Dean's hand, to the floor. Garth walked in from Catty and Sabrina's room. Sabrina saw the penny on the floor, picking it up.

"Sabrina, don't!" Catty told her.

"It's okay," Sabrina told them. "I'm fine."

Dean touched the green Ectoplasm on the side of his face trailing from his ear. Sam sighed. Ness looked up in slight relief. Garth raised his eyebrows. Catty closed her eyes, sighing. Sabrina looked at the penny.

Night - Motel - Outside

Ness, Sabrina, Garth and Catty were in the parking lot.

Garth walked toward his vehicle, carrying a bag. "It took us forever to find that penny, but we found it, and it's finally gone. Sabrina, how come that penny didn't jack you like everyone else? I mean, I understand why it didn't affect the kid who took it. He's young and innocent, and I'm not saying that you're not, but, uh, everyone at some point in their life feels like they've been screwed, and trust me when I tell you this, Sabrina. You've been screwed since before the day you were born."

"I'm a Hybrid," Sabrina told them. "Every monster there is, an Angel, a Human, and—oh, yeah—a Demon. You think that a Ghost can possess all of that?"

Catty chuckled lightly. "Sabrina's got a point."

Ness sighed. "Yeah."

"And, for a little monster, Sabrina turns out to be quiet a hero, doesn't she?" Garth asked.

"There's some Angel prophecy about either Sabrina can be the thing that destroy the earth or be the one to save it," Catty told them.

"Yeah, well, from where I'm standing, it looks likes Sabrina's gonna save it," Garth told them. "Save it from what, though, exactly?"

Sabrina raised her arms in an exasperated, cute, confused shrug. "Like I have a clue. I wasn't even here two years ago."

Garth looked from Sabrina to Catty. "Catty, I'm sure you hate the way Sabrina was brought to be and everything that's happened since, but you can't change the past." He looked at Ness. "Now, there's something I want to say to you. Look, whatever's going on with you, Ness... if anyone can get through it, it's you."

Ness smiled a small smile. "Thanks, Garth."

Garth smiled. "Now, you know what's coming next, right?" He looked at Sabrina, holding his arms toward her. Sabrina smiled, jumping in for a hug. "Yeah!" Garth put Sabrina down, turning to Catty, embracing her. Catty smiled, wrapping her arms around him. Garth pulled back, looking at Ness, spreading his arms slightly. "Come on."

Ness smiled a small smile, embracing Garth, pulling back. "Hey, uh..." She took Bobby's hat out of her back pocket, putting it on Garth's head. "Keep on trucking, Garth."

"Thanks," Garth told her, touching the brim of the cap in salute. One of his cell phones played MC Hammer's 'U Can't Touch This'. "Oh, got to go." He took it out of his jacket, answered. "Yo, Lamar. What do we got? Wendigo?" He got into his car. "You got a flare gun? No? What about a flame thrower?" He laughed. "Then you'd better get some sneakers, buddy, 'cause you're gonna have to run. All right." He hung up, putting the phone away, trying unsuccessfully to start his car, slamming a hand on the steering wheel. "Balls!"

Catty and Ness raised their eyebrows in surprise. Garth tired again to start the car, this time with success, giving them a thumbs up. Sabrina waved bye. Garth returned the wave, driving away, leaving. Sabrina smiled, walking toward the motel. Catty turned to follow.

Ness hesitated for a moment. "Hey, Catty." Catty stopped, turning to face her. "I, uh..." Ness sighed. "You were right."

"About?" Catty asked.

"Dean and I didn't tell you, Sam and Sabrina... everything," Ness told her.

Catty mocked surprise. "No. Really?"

Ness barely chuckled. "Shut up." She sighed, leaning against the Impala. "I thought I was handling it better than I actually am. I found out yesterday that I was sadly mistaken. Just... trying to believe that I was okay."

Catty slowly leaned against the Impala next to Ness. "Okay."

"So, you and I..." Ness trailed off. "We're gonna have a talk."

"About?" Catty asked.

Ness exhaled, looking at Catty. "About Purgatory."

Catty was only slightly surprised, nodding.

Flashback

Kermit, Texas

Night - Motel Room

There was a knock on the door.

Amelia opened it to reveal Sam. "Sam, I can't."

Amelia started to close the door.

Sam put a hand out to stop her. "I don't pity you. Okay? I don't. You and I? We're a lot of things, but we're not to be pitied. Look, I lost a lot of people in my life. The people that I lost most recently? I lost my... girlfriend. Ava. And I lost my brother, and sister-in-law, Dean and Ness. And now I lost my sister, and her daughter, Catty and Sabrina. Catty and Sabrina are alive, but I don't know where they are. After Dean, Ness and Ava died, after Catty and Sabrina disappeared, it felt like my world imploded and came raining down on me, and... I ran. Just like you."

"Is that supposed to be a pep talk?" Amelia asked.

"Yeah, uh, sort of," Sam answered.

"Because..." Amelia trailed off. "See, now I pity you."

Amelia led Sam inside, closing the door behind him, picking up an empty glass.

"Well, I mean, that wasn't really my point," Sam told her.

Amelia picked up another glass. "Yeah, well, bell's rung on that one, so..."

They sat down on the sofa. Amelia poured whiskey.

"So, uh, so what now?" Sam asked.

"I don't know," Amelia told him. "You want to talk about it?"

"Last night?" Sam asked.

"No," Amelia answered. "What happened to Dean, Ness, Catty, Sabrina and Ava, you pervert."

"Yeah," Sam answered. "Yeah, I'd like that. Do you want to talk about Don?" He offered Amelia a hand. "Hey, I'd like that, too."

Amelia took Sam's hand in her own.

Sam's Side

Dean walked in. "Sammy." Sam walked in. "Catty, Ness and Sabrina are packed and ready. Let's get rolling."

Dean turned toward the door.

"For the record, the girl, her name's Amelia," Sam told him. Dean stopped. "Amelia Richardson. She and I had a place together in Kermit, Texas."

Dean turned to face Sam. "Look, man, I don't even remember what I said, but, uh--"

"But what?" Sam asked. "But you didn't mean it? Oh, please. You and I both know you didn't need that penny to say those things. Not just about Catty, Ness and Sabrina, but Ava too?"

"Come on, Sam," Dean told him. "Whatever I said about Ava, I'm sorry, all right?"

"Own up to your crap, Dean," Sam told him. "I told you from the jump where I was coming from. Why I didn't look for you and Ness. Why I wasn't with Catty and Sabrina all this time, because Catty and Sabrina are the ones that stayed away. Why I tried to move on with my life, because I promised Ava I would. Not just hallucination Ava. But the real Ava. The real Ava made me promise that I would move on if something ever happened to her. When Ava thought that she was under threat. And that was before we found out Balthazar was working against Ava, before he killed her. So, yeah, Ava was right. I was truthful with you. But you, and Ness? You had secrets. You had Benny. And you got on your high and mighty, and you've been kicking me ever since you got back. But that's over. So move on, or I will."

"Okay," Dean told him. "I hear you."

"Good," Sam told him. Dean turned to leave. Sam started to follow, but stopped. "You know what?" Dean sighed, stopping. "Hear this, too. I just might be that hunter that runs into Benny one day and ices him."

Dean slowly turned to look at Sam. "I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, won't we?"

Sam nodded. "Yeah. Yeah. You keep saying that."

Sam and Dean looked at each other, no longer speaking.
