chapter 9 - O Brother, Where Art Thou?

THEN

From 10.23 "Lover's Keeper", outside the restaurant, the huge rolling cloud of black smoke soared toward Ness, Dean and Sabrina.

Drake: (voice over from 11.03 The Bad Seed) "Something's changed."

From 11.05 "Thin Lizzie", outside the bed and breakfast, Tween Amara consumed Len's soul.

From 11.03 "The Bad Seed", in Amara's room, Young Amara consumed a Demon's soul.

Drake: (voice over from 11.03 The Bad Seed) "Something's here."

From 11.03 "The Bad Seed", in the bar, Drake the Demon and Levi the Angel were having a conversation.

"It's big," Levi told him. "Big as God. Big as the Hybrid. Big as Sabrina Winchester. Someone's gotta do something."

"Someone?" Drake repeated.

"Yeah," Levi answered. "Power to the people, my friend."

"You?" Drake asked.

"Name's Levi," Levi told him, putting money on the bar, walking out, leaving.

From 11.03 "The Bad Seed", in Amara's room, Young Amara stood in front of the full-length mirror. The Darkness appeared in the mirror in front of her instead of a little girl's reflection.

From 11.03 "The Bad Seed", in Amara's room, Tween Amara looked at Crowley, smirking.

From 11.06 "Our Little World", in Amara's room, Teenage Amara looked at Crowley, smirking.

The Darkness: (voice over from 11.03 The Bad Seed) "I am what you are becoming."

From 11.03 "The Bad Seed", in Amara's room, Crowley and Young Amara were talking.

"God locked me away," Young Amara told him.

From 11.03 "The Bad Seed", in Amara's room, Young Amara stood in front of the full-length mirror.

The Darkness was in the mirror in front of her instead of a little girl's reflection. "All for His own ego. You must stay fixed on our purpose."

From 11.06 "Our Little World", in Amara's room, Dean and Ness were cautiously facing Teenage Amara.

"What's that?" Dean asked.

"Settle an old score," Teenage Amara answered.

Teenage Amara disappeared, leaving.

From 11.06 "Our Little World", in Catty and Cas' room, they were talking about Sabrina's plan to go after the Darkness.

"Ava was helping Sabrina like I was helping her," Castiel explained. "But Ava and I can't be there now because what we've been teaching Sabrina will disintegrate everything around her, including Angels."

Catty frowned curiously. "And you and Ava think that what she's doing right now can kill Amara?"

"Ava and I are guessing not," Castiel answered. "But it might make the Darkness so weak the Sabrina will be able to exorcise it out of Amara."

"Will it hurt Sow, and can it save Amara?" Catty asked.

"It will take a very big toll out of Sabrina, but she'll be fine," Castiel answered. "If the Darkness is out, and Amara is gravely injured, then Sabrina should be able to heal her."

From 11.06 "Our Little World", in the desert, Sabrina was alone in the middle of the desert. She closed her eyes, tilting her head back toward the sky, raising her arms on either side of her in concentration. A forceful wind started to blow around her. Lightning flashed. Thunder crashed. The clouds darkened and swirled around. Sabrina was emanating with blindingly bright white light that swirled around her with the wind. The light that surrounded her, her own power, was being channeled into the sky above her. The wind was chaotic around her, like a wind storm, blowing the dust and the dirt around her. The dust and the dirt caught in the chaotic wind continued to blow around, surrounding Sabrina completely, as if it was a cocoon, completely obscuring her from view.

Castiel: (voice over from 11.06 Our Little World) "That's why Sow's out in the desert, where no one is around her for hundreds of miles. Sow's basically channeling every ounce of her power to converge it into a large scale. Channeling the power outside of her body to the sky above so that Sow can smite the Darkness on a large scale. It would create a storm from Sow's power."

From 11.06 "Our Little World", in the Bunker's control room, the family was having a meeting.

"Amara is in the wind," Sam told them.

Ness scoffed, shaking her head, turning away. "I can't believe we let Amara get away."

"You just said it, Ness," Dean told her. "'God's freaking sister'. We wouldn't be able to 'let' Amara do anything if we wanted to."

Octavia looked at Sam. "I don't suppose God's decided to share any wisdom on the matter."

From 11.02 "Form and Void" and 11.06 "Our Little World", there were flashes of Sam's visions of him being tortured and the Cage.

From 11.07 "Plush", in the Bunker's library, Ness was sitting in the library at one of the tables, holding Aiden. Dean was sitting next to her, looking at Aiden thoughtfully. Catty and Sam were standing nearby.

"I keep praying to God, because if it is God, and I now you think it isn't, but if it is, then He's showing me something I don't know what to do with," Sam told them.

"What?" Ness asked.

"The Cage," Sam answered.

"Lucifer's Cage?" Ness asked.

"Yeah," Sam answered. "What if He's telling me I have to go back? What if He's saying that's where the answer is to beating the Darkness?"

"Sam, no," Dean answered. "No, okay? We've been down that road."

"Anything having to do with the Cage is... it--it's suicide," Catty told him.

From 6.13 "Unforgiven", in Sam's flashback of Hell, Sam was standing in the Cage, burning, screaming in agony.

Catty: (voice over from 11.07 Plush) "And you of all people know that."

From 11.07 "Plush", in the Bunker's library, Catty looked at Sam. "So, no. Just... not gonna happen."

"Okay," Sam told them.

Ness looked between them. "Okay."

Sam didn't look convinced that everything was fine.

NOW

  §

Day One

Day - Park

There was a fountain of an angel.

A man was standing in front of the fountain.

People were gathered around him.

They held signs with different writing, one of them being "God Is Watching You", listening to the man.

The man preached through a small megaphone. "Repress your sins. Beg for His divine mercy. When the end comes, and come it will..." Teenage Amara was in the crowd, looking around, with her back to the man preaching. "Only the forgiven will ascend to Holy Grace." Amara scowled, turning to walk toward the man. "He's watching. He's waiting."

"This is God you're speaking of?" Amara asked. The man lowered his megaphone. "Do you really think He's watching?"

The man nodded. "Deciding which of us is worthy. Only the chosen will be raised to Heaven."

"Oh, and that's you?" Amara asked. "Truthfully, I don't think He's all that interested. He doesn't even seem to be around. Believe me, I've searched."

"Stop right there, sister," the man told her. "Beg for His forgiveness or face His terrible wrath."

"Really?" Amara asked. "Gets annoyed, does He?"

"His wrath comes in many forms, but only God is able to create the fiercesome plague and destruction and all on Earth will bow before," the man told her.

"You mean something like this?" Amara asked.

Amara pointed at the fountain, using magic to turn the water into blood. She raised her hand to the sky.

The clouds turned dark.

There was lightning and thunder.

The man looked at Amara in awe. "Is it you? Are you testing us?"

Amara laughed, smiling in amusement. "God, you mean?" She stopped smiling, shaking her head, smirking. "No. But let's just say He's not the only game in town." She raised both her arms toward the sky, using magic to compel lightning bolts to strike down members of the crowd one by one, with the final lightning bolt hitting the man who had been preaching, killing them all, completely scorched, letting them all fall. The blood on the fountain turned back into water. The thunderstorm ended. Amara surveyed her work, her gaze resting on one body that was still holding a sign that read: 'The End Is Near!'. "Oh, honey, you wish." She looked up toward the sky. "Well?"

Sam's Vision

Hell - The Cage

Sam was in complete darkness, lit only by lightning flashing from outside the Cage. He realized where he was, terrified, turning around.

Lucifer was behind him. He walked toward Sam. He placed a hand on Sam's face, smiling.

Sam looked calm.

  §

Lebanon, Kansas

Trail in the Woods

Sam and Octavia were walking on the trail through the woods.

"So, this dream you had last night..." Octavia trailed off.

"Vision," Sam corrected.

Octavia nodded. "Right. Vision. You were in Lucifer's Cage, and he touched you, and..."

"And I feel calm," Sam answered. "Like things will be all right. And that's not something I would ever come up with. I mean, that is the last thing I would ever feel."

"If Lucifer touched you, it would be the last thing you think, Sam," Octavia told him. "Ever. Why would God even ask this of you?"

"I don't know, Ava," Sam told her. "I don't know if it's really the answer. I don't know if this is what He wants. But I only get these visions when I reach out to God."

A bush behind them burst into flames.

Sam and Octavia heard the disruption, slowing to a stop, looking at each other, slowly turning around to look at the burning bush.

"Really?" Octavia asked in annoyance. "The burning bush?"

"That's--that's a sign, right?" Sam asked.

Octavia sighed. "From the Bible." She turned to face him. "Sam, before anything, you need to talk to Ness, Dean and Catty."

"They're not gonna like it, Ava," Sam told her.

"Of course they're not gonna like it," Octavia told him. "Cas and Sabrina won't either. I don't even like it, and I know that you don't, either. But whatever you decide... I'll be there."

Sam nodded barely. "I know. Thank you, Ava."

  §

The Bunker - Library

Sam, Dean and Catty were sitting at one of the tables, arguing.

Ness was standing nearby, pouring them glasses of whiskey.

"Because you and Ava are crazy, okay?" Catty asked. "And it's not going to happen. How many times do we have to say that this is a horrible idea?"

"About as many as I have to say, 'Okay, then what else have we got?'" Sam answered. "Listen, I'm all ears. Catty, ordinarily, I'd agree with you, and Ava does agree with you, but even Ava knows the visions only happen when I reach out to God. And Ava and I are not sure if Sabrina can take down Amara/The Darkness. I mean, Ava's sure that Sow can save Amara, but not sure about taking down the Darkness. I asked Him for a way to beat the Darkness, and the visions got more specific. And I was in the Cage."

"Yeah, with Lucifer," Dean told him. "The biggest monster ever hatched."

"Fan-freaking-tastic," Catty told him sarcastically.

"You know, Lucifer was the biggest monster ever hatched, until we hatched one that's even worse," Sam told them.

Ness handed them their drinks. "You know what, man? Maybe there is something to it all, maybe, and maybe there's not."

"Doesn't it make sense?" Sam asked. "I mean, Lucifer would know how God ended the Darkness. He was there. After Sow save Amara, what do we do about the Darkness?"

Ness shook her head, looking away.

  §

Night - Bridge

Castiel, Sabrina and Octavia were meeting with Crowley underneath the bridge.

"So, God assured you of this, did He?" Crowley asked. "I'd say you're making this up, but I never think of Cas and Ava as imaginative."

"Aunt Ava's very imaginative, thank you very much," Sabrina told him. "Where do you think I get it from? Aunt Ava."

"We're not saying it's going to happen," Castiel told him. "We just want to know..."

"Theoretically," Octavia told him.

"If it's possible," Castiel finished.

"The Cage is a can of worms you do not want to open," Crowley told them. "I believe this conversation is over."

Crowley prepared to snap his fingers.

"Is it?" Octavia asked. "Crowley, you know that the Darkness is going to pound on everything, and that includes you."

"Now, I have a shot at expelling the Darkness from Amara, if I ever find her again, but we know it's not going to kill either the Darkness or Amara," Sabrina told him. "And you had a shot at taking her out when she was with you, but apparently, you thought that sucking up was the way to go. And that worked out about as well as keeping me captive did. You thought that you would have figured out that if that wouldn't work on the True Hybrid, it wouldn't work on God's sister."

"God's sister?" Crowley repeated. "He has relatives? I had that kind of leverage under my thumb, and I let it slip away."

"Can we focus on the big picture here, please?" Octavia asked.

"Can we meet with Lucifer or not?" Castiel asked. "Without going into the Cage and without letting him out?"

Crowley thought for a long moment. "There may be a way."

  §

Hell

The Cage was suspended by chains that never seemed to end and that didn't seem attached to anything.

  §

The Cage

Lucifer was inside, leaning forward against the wall. He was smiling.

  §

Bridge

Castiel, Sabrina, Octavia and Crowley were still under the bridge, continuing their conversation.

Crowley was pacing around them. "Clearly, if your precious family enters the Cage, they're gone. And, yes, it's on my bucket list. Now is not the time to be selfish. Need a secure site. A way to neutralize Lucifer's powers."

"In Hell?" Octavia asked.

"Yes, in Hell," Crowley answered. "So we have a modicum of control. You think I want that abomination running amok upstairs?"

"Is it possible to control the situation?" Castiel asked.

Crowley nodded. "I can arrange for transit into Hell. Opening the Cage? That's another matter."

"You're the King of the joint," Sabrina told him. "Don't you have a key?"

"It was sealed by God Himself," Crowley told her. "Of course I don't have a key." Sabrina looked away, to Castiel. "The mechanisms of divine manufacturer, I believe its secrets, along with the spells for warding were recorded where many such mysteries are found. 'The Book of the Damned'."

  §

Day Two

Morning - Church

Many people were praying.

The church bells were ringing.

A priest was talking to various parishioners. "Good to see you again. Hello, Mary, how are you? Agnes, what a pleasure. Good to see you." Amara was sitting in one of the pews. The priest walked toward her. "Hello."

"Are you in charge here?" Amara asked. "I'm looking for God."

"Oh, of course," the priest told her. "We all look for God in all things."

"No, I need an actual meeting in a room," Amara told him.

"Well, it's the right place," the priest told her. "This is His house. And the way to reach Him is through prayer."

Amara looked at the parishioners praying. "Like them, you mean?"

The priest nodded. "Mm-hmm. Go ahead. Take her for a spin."

Amara held her hands together, closing her eyes to pray. She looked at the priest. "It's not working."

"Well, of course it's working," the priest told her. "He heard you."

"How do you know?" Amara asked.

"Because He promised," the priest answered.

"Oh, so you have seen Him, then?" Amara asked.

"Well, no one has," the priest answered. "At least no one alive."

Amara looked at him in confusion. "Wait. So, only dead people get to see Him?" The priest nodded. "And this makes sense, to billions of you?"

"It is the nature of faith," the priest told her. "It's all here." He picked up a Bible. "The mercy of God, His love of the world and mankind, His perfect plan for us..."

"A manipulation," Amara told him. "You only believe what He wants you to believe."

"Exactly," the priest told her.

"You don't know what He's like at all," Amara told him.

"We certainly do," the priest told her. "God is the Light, and it is the Light that vanquishes the Darkness."

Amara was angered by the words.

The priest handed Amara the Bible, walking away.

Amara looked at the Bible in disgust.

Fall River, Massachusetts

Needham Asylum - Throne Room

This throne room was slightly different than the throne room in Hell.

Crowley still had a throne to sit in.

Two Demons brought Rowena into the room, taking the hood off her head.

"Mother," Crowley told her. "Good of you to stop by."

Rowena looked at the two Demons restraining her. "Unhand me, you goons." Crowley motioned for the Demons to leave. The Demons walked out, leaving. Rowena glared at Crowley. "So, Fergus. Think you've won? Lay a hand on me, and my followers will swoop down on this tin-can palace of yours with all the power of 'The Book of the Damned'."

"Stow it, you lying bitch," Crowley told her. "If you could do that, you'd have done it. If I wanted to kill you, I'd have done that."

"Not that you haven't tried," Rowena told him.

"You tried to kill me, twice," Crowley told her.

"What is it they say?" Rowena asked. "Third time's the charm." Sam, Octavia, Catty, Sabrina and Castiel walked in. "Oh, you're not handing me over to them. It's beneath even you. They're your enemies, as well."

"All right, Rowena," Catty told her. "We get it. We're all enemies, okay? But right now, we've got bigger fish to fry. Then we can go back to killing each other."

"Ah, the chicken's come home to roost," Rowena told them. "This ghastly force set free when the Mark was removed."

"So you know?" Sabrina asked.

"I've heard whispers," Rowena answered. "As bad as they say?"

"Well, let's just say that everyone in this room might hold a piece of the puzzle to corking it back up," Sam told her.

"Oh, really?" Rowena asked. "And what happens to me once the danger is past. How do I know that I can trust any of you?"

"You don't," Castiel answered. "None of us do."

Octavia raised her eyebrows slightly. "It's a devil's bargain."

  §

PJ's Autobody Shop

There was a group of Angels talking.

"This is a time for all Angels to pull together, put aside our disagreements and show the big bosses how to save Heaven from being taken over," Angel 1 told them. "'Cause it's grunts like us who'll get kicked aside. Believe me. The Darkness has a plan for every one of God's creations."

"Take over Heaven?" Angel 2 asked. "How is that even possible?"

"Yeah, who made her God?" Angel 3 asked.

Levi was in the crowd of Angels, standing next to a female Angel with big glasses. He crossed his arms over his chest, annoyed and impatient.

"Come on," Angel 1 told them. "You know the stories as well as I do. All powerful. All consuming."

"Her beef is with God," Angel 2 told them. "Not us. He locked her away. It's on Him to make this right."

"Yeah?" Levi asked. "You tell Him that. Next time you see Him. Oh, oops. He's not around."

Angel 1 nodded in agreement. "Yeah. Levi's right. God locked her up, and you don't think she's going to want to get even by tearing apart anything He ever made?"

"And you're going to lead us against her?" Levi asked skeptically. "You've never led anyone."

"None of us have, Levi," Angel 1 told him. "When our leaders do nothing but pit the factions against each other."

Some of the Angels nodded in agreement.

"You think that we can get past our differences and stand united to take her down?" Levi asked.

"You don't?" Angel 1 asked.

"No, I don't," Levi answered. "I think that whatever we try won't work, and in revenge for trying, the Darkness will take out each and every one of us."

"Levi, please shut up," the Angel next to him told him.

Angel 1 stepped closer to Levi threateningly. "So, what do you suggest, Levi?"

"I suggest that we wait for the Hybrid to make her move," Levi answered. "Sabrina Winchester might not be able to take out the Darkness alone, but she'll be far more competent against her than all of us put together. Unless you want to try something extreme and get us killed."

The Angels were muttering nervously to themselves in agreement.

Angel 1 glared at Levi. "Fine. We'll do things your way. This one time. And after Sabrina Winchester makes her move against Amara, you'll yourself..." He looked at the female Angel with the big glasses standing next to Levi. "Along with your little friend Ambriel here..." Ambriel looked confused at the mention of her. Angel 1 looked at Levi. "Will go into the war zone to see who comes out victorious. If either one of them live, Sabrina or Amara, you're a dead Angel walking, Levi."

Angel 1 walked away.

Levi was unbothered by the Angels' reactions toward him.

  §

Needham Asylum - Throne Room

Sam, Octavia, Catty, Sabrina, Castiel, Rowena and Crowley were still talking.

"Can this be true?" Rowena asked. "His sister? In my day, we'd all be burned at the stake for even thinking any of this."

"You see, then, Mother, the need for urgency," Crowley told her.

"Well, if my deciphering of the book is so pivotal, I'd like to know what's in it for me," Rowena told them.

"You mean, other than your life?" Sabrina asked.

"Speaking of which, I'll make you a little deal, Mommy," Crowley told her. "You pitch in like a good girl? I'll call off my assassins. No more looking over your shoulder, for now."

"I'll need the codex, of course," Rowena told them. "And the code-breaker Charlie and Ness devised."

"Yeah, you'll get limited access," Sam told her. "Supervised."

"We need to know exactly this," Octavia told her. "How to open the Cage and how to protect Sam once it is."

"Just what's in this Cage that's so dangerous?" Rowena asked.

"Lucifer," Octavia answered.

"Lucifer?" Rowena repeated. "The original dark prince?"

"Yes, an Archangel so badass that he was personally dumped into the Cage by God Himself," Catty answered.

Rowena was barely able to contain her happiness. "Well, let's get to it, then."

  §

Lebanon, Kansas

Church

There were statues that had fallen over and shattered.

The parishioners were all dead.

Amara had her hands on the priest's cheeks, consuming his soul. She threw his dead body against the pulpit. She looked at the stain-glass window. "Do you see what's happening? All your favorites. All your chosen. They are suffering." She stretched her arms out, looking above, screaming the words, tears in her eyes. "Show yourself!"

  §

Park

Dean and Ness were walking in a park.

Ness was pushing Aiden in a stroller in front of her. "So, you sure that the others have got Witch bitch duty under control?"

"Not entirely, but we have a case here, and I'm staying here with you and Aiden, because you are definitely not going to Hell," Dean answered. "Neither are you, Aiden."

Aiden smiled.

"So, what happened in the church?" Ness asked.

"The cops said that the last time the vics were seen alive, one of them, a priest, they were talking to some mystery woman," Dean explained. "She was not killed."

"Amara?" Ness asked.

"Amara, I bet," Dean answered. "Apparently, it's a massacre. The place is covered in blood."

"Amara's upping her game," Ness told him.

"Which is why Sow, Cas and Catty are floating somewhere around here, looking for her, because Sow said that she's closer to us than we think," Dean told her. "She said she felt the Darkness."

Ness took a deep, nervous breath. "Listen, are you sure that you're okay with this whole deal?"

"No," Dean answered. "Not even a little. For the record, I hate it. But what choice do we have?" Ness nodded sadly in agreement, sympathetic. "But Sam's right. If Sabrina can't take out the Darkness, then we need a Plan B. Ness, you think Sow can do it?"

Ness shrugged. "Well, in the words of the wise Catty Winchester, there's only one way to find out." Dean smiled a small smile. "I mean, Dean, I don't like any part of this situation, okay? I hate that the Darkness had to take Amara as a vessel, and I hate the idea Sabrina literally putting herself in danger to try and save Amara so that Sow can bring Amara back home. For us and for Aiden. I hate the idea of Sam and Ava going to Hell to Lucifer. But you're right. We don't really have a choice. Which is what makes all of this worse."

Dean nodded, sighing.

Aiden started to cry.

Dean and Ness stopped walking.

Dean turned to stand in front of Aiden. "Aiden? What's wrong, little guy? You worried like your mom and dad?" Aiden started to cry harder, louder, shifting in the stroller. Dean and Ness were concerned. "Well, Aiden doesn't sound too good."

Ness looked behind Dean, worried and scared for Aiden. "Dean. Aiden."

Dean stood, turning around.

Amara walked closer.

Ness and Dean stood in front of Aiden protectively.

  §

The Bunker - Dungeon

Rowena was chained with the iron shackles so she couldn't do magic, reading and translating 'The Book of the Damned'.

Octavia was watching over her.

Rowena looked up. "You talk about trust."

"No, I don't," Octavia told her.

"You and your bloodthirsty boyfriend say we're partners in this holy war against Amara, and yet..." Rowena trailed off, showing Octavia her chained hands. "Trussed like a chicken."

"You're sitting there with 'The Book of the Damned' and the means to read every word, and you think I'm going to set you free?" Octavia asked. "Do I look crazy?"

"Well, despite the fact that you've twice died because of the Winchesters and the Angel Castiel, only to be resurrected, you're still as close to them as ever," Rowena told her. "Even though they could easily lead to your death once again, 'Ava'."

"You know what?" Octavia asked in annoyance. "Just get back to work, all right?" Rowena laughed. "We're running out of time here."

Octavia turned away toward the door.

Sam walked in, seeing how annoyed and exasperated Octavia was. "Ava? You okay?"

Octavia sighed, shaking her head.

Rowena looked at a spell on the page, standing. "Aha."

Octavia turned to face her in annoyance. "What? What now?"

"Well, I'll need some ingredients," Rowena told them. "But you may summon Fergus. And tell him to bring a hand-cart."

"A hand-cart?" Sam repeated.

Rowena nodded. "We are going to Hell."

  §

Park

Ness and Dean were still standing in front of Aiden protectively.

Aiden was still in the stroller, crying.

Amara walked closer. She shook her head barely. "Don't be afraid."

Amara closed her eyes in concentration.

Ness and Dean looked at her in confusion.

  §

Clearing

Ness, Dean, Aiden and Amara were suddenly in a clearing. Amara, Ness and Dean looked around at the beautiful surroundings. Mountains, lake and forest.

Ness turned to see Aiden in his stroller behind them, kneeling next to him instantly.

Dean turned to Ness and Aiden protectively.

Amara walked closer.

Dean and Ness looked at Amara cautiously.

  §

Hell - Limbo

Corridor

Sam, Octavia, Crowley and Rowena were walking down a corridor with high brick walls and flaming torches lighting the path.

A thunderstorm raged overhead.

Rowena looked at Crowley. "Flop sweat, sonny? Dread of what's to come?"

"Can it," Crowley told her. "Your barbs may amuse your circle of hags. You have no idea what you're tampering with. What Lucifer is capable of."

"Well, dear, if you can't stand the heat, get out of Hell," Rowena told him.

Sam looked around nervously, uncertain of what they were about to face. "Ava..."

Octavia looked at him understanding, taking his hand reassuringly, nodding to his questioning gaze, sighing. "I must say, Sam,  it's not as scenic as I'd expected."

"We are in the furthest reaches of Hell, Limbo, where I send unruly souls for timeout," Crowley told them.

"This is where we meet Lucifer?" Sam asked.

"What it lacks in ambiance, it makes up for in security," Crowley told them. They came upon an empty cage. Rowena painted Sigils on the cage. The thunderstorm continued to rage. "Makes your flesh crawl, doesn't it? I get it. I'm the King of this place. It's still not my cup of tea."

"I don't know, Crowley," Octavia told him. "I'd say it suits you. Dark. Empty."

"Fascinating," Crowley told them sarcastically. "Ava's utter contempt, when I'm in the midst of saving the Winchesters' bacon, again."

"Let's not forget the time you had me killed," Octavia told him. "And the point of this is to save everyone's bacon, including yours. Let's just hope she knows what she's doing. This cell won't hold anything is the warding's not right."

"Don't you worry about me, 'Ava'," Rowena told her, mocking her nickname. "I'm a professional."

"Are you sure you can do this without actually opening the Cage?" Sam asked.

"We are about to find out, aren't we?" Rowena asked. She stood over a podium with the spell. "Foro dega la moray." She raised her arms. The warding on the cage illuminated. "Mah ho tah." A fire appeared, completely surrounding the cell. Rowena smiled. "Now, let's have a go at that Cage. Foh reh say-lah."

Sam looked anxious.

Octavia sighed, not knowing what to expect, still unsure about this.

Crowley looked intrigued. "It begins."

  §

Clearing

Aiden was still in his stroller. Ness was still kneeling in front of him. Dean was still standing next to them. Amara was still standing nearby. Ness stood next to Dean. Dean and Ness looked at Amara cautiously, anxiously.

"You misunderstand my purpose on Earth," Amara told them.

"What do I misunderstand about the people that you butchered in the park or that church?" Dean asked.

"I had to get His attention," Amara told them.

"His?" Ness repeated.

"God," Amara answered. "I tried praying, calling out in need. He ignored me. He forced my hand. I had no other reason to harm His chosen. My issue is with my brother, not His creation."

"Whatever the deal is between you two, whoever threw the first punch, whoever was Daddy's favorite..." Dean trailed off.

"There was no Daddy," Amara told them.

"Whatever," Dean told her.

"That mess is your mess," Ness told her. "It's between you two. You're taking people's lives. You're taking their souls."

"I consumed their souls," Amara told her. "They aren't gone. They're a part of me, and, in that way, they live forever. You know that as well as I do, Ness, as I gave Dean his soul back."

Hell - Limbo

Sam, Octavia, Crowley and Rowena were outside of the cell.

The cell was completely surrounded by fire.

The thunderstorm still raged overhead.

Sam looked worried.

An outline of a person appeared in the cell, standing in the shadows. His eyes glowed red. He emerged from the dark. The red glow faded. Lucifer nonchalantly leaned against the bars of the cell. "My old friend, Crowley."

"A mere acolyte, carrying your torch," Crowley told him.

"You're too kind..." Lucifer trailed off. "To yourself. The Angel Octavia. Quiet the double agent, the last time I saw you. Ava gave Heaven a run for their money." Rowena gazed at Lucifer in apparent adoration. "What do you want of me?" Sam walked toward the cell, but kept his distance. Lucifer smirked. "Sam Winchester. My old roomie. Hug it out?"

Lucifer was still leaning against the bars of the cell. "I gotta say, I'm a little in the dark about this meeting. Am I up for parole? Time off for bad behavior?" He laughed mockingly. "I don't really get visitors."

"If it weren't for the crisis top-side, you wouldn't be getting any now," Sam told him.

"Crisis?" Lucifer repeated.

Rowena started to drool. "He's so alpha, isn't he? Probably not relationship material, though."

"Mother, you're drooling," Crowley told her. "Get a hold of yourself."

Octavia rolled her eyes, walking away from them toward Sam, standing next to him, looking at Lucifer in the cell. "You're aware of the Darkness?"

Lucifer inhaled sharply. "Yikes. That doesn't sound good. Um, I'm aware of what she was, but that was eons ago."

"She's been released," Octavia told him. "So, now, she's somewhere, or everywhere, on Earth."

"How ever did that happen?" Lucifer asked.

They didn't answer.

"The point is, she poses a threat to all that exists, including you," Sam told him.

Lucifer nodded. "Hmm. Oh, that leads me to my next question. Where's the big burrito Himself? Where's Dad in all of this, Ava?"

"All current indications of His presence are that there are no current indications of His presence," Octavia told him.

"What?" Lucifer asked. "Caught the fun bus out of town? Figures."

"But, recently, He has reached out to an interested party," Sam told him.

"Who?" Lucifer asked.

"Me," Sam answered.

Lucifer pointed at Sam. "You?"

"He answered my prayers," Sam told him.

"Did He now?" Lucifer asked. "And, what was Dad's suggestion?"

Sam took a deep breath. "To seek out you."

Lucifer laughed. "Get outta town. Seriously? Who'd have thunk?"

Clearing

Dean, Ness, Aiden and Amara were still in the clearing.

Aiden looked afraid, trying not to cry.

"I see the wariness in your eyes, the mistrust," Amara told them. "The pain that you feel when you look at me, knowing that I'm inside your daughter Amara. I don't blame you."

"Don't you?" Ness asked.

Amara shook her head. "It's incredible, Ness. The millions of emotions that I felt and saw from consuming Dean's soul. And I see the same thing when I look at you." She looked between them. "So much pain and so much suffering, and you've convinced yourselves that this is actually what you deserve." She stepped closer, looking at Aiden in his stroller. Aiden started to cry loudly. "All this pain, suffer and regret. You've never felt true happiness, have you? Or little Aiden."

Amara placed a finger on Aiden's forehead.

Aiden stopped crying. He looked completely happy, giggling soft, sweet baby laughs.

Dean and Ness were confused.

Amara placed a hand on both Dean and Ness'.

Dean and Ness both felt a rush of feeling, like ecstasy, and even though they knew it wasn't real, it felt like it to them. They couldn't help but laugh in wonder, their laughs mingling with Aiden's.

"What did you do?" Ness asked.

"I only caused the  two of you and even Aiden more suffering," Amara told them. "And I can make it go away, at least for a moment. You think you're to blame, that there's any choice to this. It's not a choice. It's destiny."

"We don't believe in destiny," Dean told her. "We've stopped destiny before."

"But you can't always stop it," Amara told them. "My brother made it so. How it endures, the propaganda. He was so threatened by me, fearful that I would make a more perfect creation than He. So, He exiled me. Virtually erased me. Passed on stories that I was a threat. He encouraged religions as monuments to His ego, promised the fearful safety if they'd adore Him. His way or the highway."

"Some people find comfort in that," Ness told her. "Golden rule. Brother's keeper. It is His universe. His rules."

"What if there were no rules?" Amara asked. "No pain? No prayer? Just bliss. That feeling that you all just had. For everyone. Forever."

Park

Catty, Sabrina and Castiel were in the park that Amara had taken Dean, Ness and Aiden from.

"Uncle Dean, Aunt Ness, and Aiden were here," Sabrina told them.

"Where are they now?" Castiel asked.

"I don't know," Sabrina told them. "The Darkness... Amara was here. She took Uncle Dean, Aunt Ness and Aiden."

Catty looked at them worriedly in denial. "What? You're telling me that Dean, Ness and Aiden are with Amara?"

Sabrina turned to face them. "I can find them, Mom. I mean, I've been around Uncle Dean, Aunt Ness and Aiden enough to find them quickly. But it might be a little bit harder because they're with Amara/The Darkness."

"They should be praying to you so that you know where to find them," Castiel told her. "But the odds aren't exactly in our favor at the moment. Sam and Ava with Lucifer in Hell, Dean, Ness and Aiden with Amara wherever they are." Catty sighed worriedly, looking down, overwhelmed. Castiel looked at Catty, nodding reassuringly. "We'll find them, Catty. Whatever happens, we'll save them for whatever's to come. I promise. Whatever it takes."

Catty looked up, nodding. She looked at Sabrina. "You find Dean, Ness and Aiden, you send them here the first chance you get. We have to get them away from Amara as soon as we can."

Sabrina nodded understandingly. "Of course. And then I'm gonna take Amara far, far away so that I can do the thing that Dad and Aunt Ava have been teaching me to do."

Catty looked at her seriously. "Give it all you got. But if you can't exorcise the Darkness from Amara... then it's not your fault. We'll find another way."

Castiel stepped closer, looking at Sabrina seriously. "I'll be there to see what happens. I will be there for you, win or lose. Just be careful, Sabrina."

Sabrina nodded, embracing Catty and Castiel both for a long moment, taking a deep, steadying, nervous breath. "Wish me luck."

Sabrina pulled away, disappearing, leaving.

Castiel sighed somberly. "Good luck."

Catty and Castiel looked at each other worriedly in concern, not knowing what was going to happen.

Hell - Limbo

Sam and Octavia were still standing outside the cell to talk to Lucifer.

Crowley and Rowena were talking several feet behind them.

"Can you hear what they're saying?" Crowley asked.

"I could if you'd just shut it," Rowena told him.

Lucifer looked at Sam and Octavia. "I completely get why you came to me. You can't ignore God, right? Tell him, Ava. God says jump, every Angel, every man says, 'How high?'"

"Not that kind of Angel anymore," Octavia told him.

Lucifer smirked.

"So, does this mean you are on board?" Sam asked.

"Do you think that you can help Sabrina take care of the Darkness forever?" Octavia asked.

"Well, I did help Dad seal up the Darkness all those years ago," Lucifer told them. "She's quite a force. Determine to take over everything, even back then. Prone to tantrums. I can see why Pop is laying low."

Crowley and Rowena watched on.

"A lot of blabber going on," Crowley told her. "Surely Sam and Ava know better than to cut some sort of deal."

"You know, Fergus, sometimes striking a deal, even a painful one, may be the only option," Rowena told him.

"Like the hit you took out on me, for instance?" Crowley asked.

"It's not easy being a parent," Rowena told him. "Knowing when to hug your child, when to kill him."

Lucifer looked at Sam and Octavia. "Now that sis is here, God's not the only circus in town."

"Is she equal to Him in power?" Octavia asked.

"Raw power?" Lucifer asked. "Sure. But she's got none of the experience. Dad is a master strategist."

"And why is that?" Sam asked.

Lucifer shrugged. "Oh, because God needs me to help the Hybrid put the cat in the bag." He laughed. "Ironic to say, since Sabrina's mother is Catty Winchester. Catty, Catty, Catty, that girl is the vessel for everything, isn't she? Even the True Hybrid. And now you all have to take down the Darkness. Sabrina can't do it by herself. It took all the Archangels and God Himself to put the Darkness away the first time. Now, me and Sabrina working together? It should do the trick. Maybe."

"And?" Sam asked.

"And, I need a ride out of here," Lucifer told them. "I mean, I look swell in here and everything, but I'd be so much smoke top-side."

"You want a vessel," Octavia told him.

"One who is strong enough to hold me, handy, and available now," Lucifer told them. Sam and Octavia looked at each other knowingly. "Catch my drift?"

  §

Clearing

Dean and Ness were still standing next to Aiden.

Amara was pacing around them.

"What is it exactly that you want?" Ness asked. "When you make the world of bliss and peace, what's in it for you?"

"What I deserve," Amara told them.

"Which is?" Dean asked.

"Everything," Amara told them.

"Everything?" Dean repeated.

"I was the beginning, and I will be the end," Amara told them. "I will be all that there is."

"So, you're it?" Dean asked, turning away from her, looking at Aiden in front of him, turning the stroller away from them so he didn't have to see. "That would make you God."

"No," Amara answered. "God was the Light. I'm the Dark."

Ness held her hand behind her back, reaching into her pocket, pulling out a silver blade. "Then what?"

"That's all you need to know for now," Amara told them, turning to face them. Ness plunged the blade toward her stomach. The blade shattered, as it didn't penetrate her body. The useless broken shards fell to the ground. Ness backed away toward Dean, stunned. "You had to know that was pointless. I know that you're both warriors, and your instincts are to resist. But I can't be resisted."

Dean and Ness looked at each other worriedly.

Hell - Limbo

Crowley and Rowena still stood at the podium.

Sam and Octavia still stood outside the cell to talk to Lucifer.

Sam looked at Lucifer angrily. "Did you really expect me to agree with this?" Lucifer nodded, smiling. "So, what, I just disappear while you take my body and get set loose on the world again?"

Lucifer smirked, nodding. "I know. I know, Sam. It's a lot to ask. But desperate times require desperate measures."

"That's not desperate," Sam told him. "That's certifiable."

Lucifer pointed at Sam. "Okay, hold on there a second, cowboy. Take a breath. You have been working with Crowley. You passed certifiable three off-ramps ago. And, look, I'm no fan of the ruler of the universe, but here I am, ready to pitch in." Octavia looked at him skeptically in contempt. "Why do you think God sent you to me, Ava? To get my help, which I only now just offered. Sam, your visions were the word of God. You can't say no to that."

Sam looked away. "Ava..."

Octavia barely shook her head.

  §

Clearing

Dean and Ness stood in front of Aiden now.

Amara stepped closer.

"So, all of this, what was it?" Dean asked. "Why did you bring us here? Just to talk about the future? The future that you want?"

"The future that you can have if you and your family stand down," Amara told them.

"And why would we do that?" Ness asked.

Amara tilted her head slightly. "Because I can give Amara back to you." Dean and Ness looked at her warily in shock, not knowing whether or not to believe her. "I can find someone else and return Amara back to you. It's so simple. I can make the world a place without pain. Without suffering."

"So, we stand down, and you find another vessel, and in return, you'll give us Amara?" Ness asked skeptically.

Amara raised her eyebrows. "Why wouldn't you want that?"

Dean and Ness didn't get the chance to respond.

Sabrina appeared, walking toward them.

Dean looked at her in relief. "Sabrina."

Amara turned to face Sabrina. "You're the True Hybrid. I don't know what I expected, but I guess I expected... more."

"Yeah, I could say the same thing about you," Sabrina replied.

Sabrina held her hand toward Dean, Ness and Aiden, teleporting them away.

Amara looked at Sabrina.

Sabrina grabbed Amara, teleporting them away.

Park

Catty and Castiel were walking through the park.

Dean, Ness and Aiden appeared several feet in front of them.

Catty looked at them in relief. "Dean. Ness." Dean and Ness were confused and disoriented, turning to Catty. Catty walked closer instantly, embracing them in relief. "Thank God you're here." Castiel walked closer. Dean, Ness and Catty pulled away. Catty looked at Aiden in his stroller. "Is Aiden okay?" Castiel walked closer. Catty looked at Castiel. "Is Aiden okay?"

Castiel placed two fingers on Aiden's head, as if checking. "Aiden's fine."

Dean and Ness sighed in relief.

"Where's Sabrina?" Dean asked. "She just sent us here. Why didn't she come with us?"

"Because she's going to take on the Darkness to bring Amara home," Castiel answered. "She's doing so now as we speak."

Dean and Ness were stunned, looking from Castiel to Catty.

Catty was worried, but relieved that they were okay.

Dean and Ness were still overwhelmed from what had happened with Amara that day, and in shock that she would make them such a deal as she had.

Desert

Sabrina had taken Amara to the same desert she had practiced in before, pushing her away.

Amara stumbled, but regained her balance, looking around. "And where is this?"

"Somewhere where no one else can get hurt because of this," Sabrina answered.

Amara looked at Sabrina in confusion.

Sabrina closed her eyes, tilting her head back toward the sky, raising her arms on either side of her in concentration.

A forceful wind started to blow around them.

Lightning flashed.

The clouds darkened and swirled around.

Sabrina was emanating with blindingly bright white light that swirled around her with the wind.

The light that surrounded her, her own power, was being channeled into the sky above her.

"What are you doing, Sabrina?" Amara asked.

"I'm channeling every ounce of my power out of me into the sky above us so that I can hit you with everything I've got," Sabrina answered. "You can't flee, can you?"

Amara tried to leave, but she was unable to. "You're stronger than I would've imagined."

"And I'm just getting started, Amara," Sabrina told her.

Sabrina closed her eyes, channeling even more power into the sky above, glowing brighter with blindingly bright white light.

The wind was chaotic around them, like a wind storm, blowing the dust and the dirt around them.

Lightning and thunder continued to flash and crash.

The dust and the dirt caught in the chaotic wind continued to blow around, surrounding Sabrina and Amara completely, as if it was a cocoon.

The power in the sky above them was blazing brightly.

Amara looked worried.

Sabrina let go of the power.

The power enveloped Sabrina and Amara completely, exploding all around them.

Hell - Limbo

Crowley and Rowena were still standing at the podium.

Sam and Octavia were still standing outside the cell to talk to Lucifer.

Lucifer was pacing from inside the cell. "So, have you thought about it? Do I have an invitation to look forward to?"

Sam looked at Octavia, looking uncertain. "No. I won't do it. There has to be another way."

Lucifer looked down at the illuminated warding on the cell.

The warding began to fade.

The fire around the cell was dying.

Crowley looked startled.

Rowena looked intrigued.

"What the hell is going on?" Crowley asked.

The fire around the cell was completely extinguished.

Octavia stepped closer to Sam worriedly. "Why did the warding fail? What's happening?"

Rowena looked at Crowley calmly. "Follow me, Fergus."

Rowena and Crowley walked out, leaving.

Lucifer snapped his fingers.

Cell

Sam and Octavia were suddenly in the cell with Lucifer.

Lucifer smirked. "Together again." Sam was terrified, backing into the corner of the cell. Lucifer approached. Octavia stood in between Lucifer and Sam. Lucifer was amused. "Hey. Did you miss me? I bet you did." Octavia looked at Sam worriedly. Sam took a deep breath. His terror was replaced by stoic faith. "I have to say, Sam, you're extraordinarily calm given the circumstances."

"Well, it's pretty much exactly how God told me it was going to be," Sam told him. "Guess we just have to go with it and play our hand."

"Well, that would make so much sense if it was God that was doing the talking," Lucifer told them. "You see, when the Darkness descended, the impact on Hell was massive. The Cage was damaged. Through the fissures, I was able to reach out. It wasn't God inside your head, Sam. It was me." He looked at Octavia and Sam, smiling in satisfaction. Octavia closed her eyes, looking away. Sam was terrified. "So, you see, He's not with you. He's never been with you. It was always... just... me." Sam shook his head in disbelief. Octavia opened her eyes, sighing. Lucifer chuckled. "So, I... I guess I am your only hope."

Octavia looked at Lucifer. "It's never going to happen."

Lucifer smirked in amusement, looking at Sam. "Ava's a feisty little firecracker, isn't she? Gotta say, out of the Angels, Ava was always one of the least boring. Ah, settle in there, guys." He smiled. "Hey, roomies. Upper bank? Lower bunk? I guess that you two wanna share. Mind if I join you?"

Octavia looked at Sam, in shock.

Sam looked at Octavia, terrified about what would happen to the both of them.
