chapter 16 - Safe House

Outfits in the external link

From 6.04 "Singers' Weekend", in Bobby's House's foyer, Bobby Singer opened the door for Rufus Turner.

"Oh, good," Rufus told him. "You're home. Listen, you got to help me bury a body."

THEN

From 3.15 "Time Is On My Side", outside the Turner House, Rufus opened the door for Ness.

Ness: (voice over from 3.15 Time Is On My Side) "His real name's Rufus Turner."

From 5.02 "Good God, Y'All!", in the supposed Demon town, Rufus was firing his automatic gun.

Ness: (voice over from 3.15 Time Is On My Side) "He's a hunter."

Catty: (voice over from 3.15 Time Is On My Side) "One of your old friends?"

From 6.04 "Singers' Weekend", in Bobby's House, Agent Adams showed a sketch of Rufus to Bobby and Ness. "Have you seen this man? Rufus Turner?"

"No, never seen that dick," Bobby told him.

"How do you know he's a dick?" Adams asked.

"Lucky guess," Bobby told them.

From 6.04 "Singers' Weekend", in Bobby's House's foyer, Bobby and Rufus stood at the door.

"Miss me?" Rufus asked.

From 7.10 "Death's Door", in Bobby's flashback of the church, Rufus opened Lara Coggin's coffin.

Bobby: (voice over from 6.16 ...And Then There Were None) "He always used to pull the old 'Can't work on the Sabbath' card..."

From 6.04 "Singers' Weekend", in the Singer Salvage Yard, Bobby, Rufus and Ness dumped the Okami's body into the grave.

Bobby: (voice over from 6.16 ....And Then There Were None) "Whenever we had to bury a body."

From 7.10 "Death's Door", in Bobby's flashback of the church, the Ghost of Lara Coggins drove her hand into Bobby's chest. Rufus used an iron pipe to slash through Lara, making her disappear.

Bobby: (voice over from 6.16 ...And Then There Were None) "Taught me and Ness a thing or two about what's really out there."

From 6.16 "...And Then There Were None", in the morgue, Rufus and Bobby stood over a body.

Bobby: (voice over from 6.16 ...And Then There Were None) "Pretty soon, we were riding together."

From 6.16 "...And Then There Were None", in Bobby's Mind Space's park, Bobby and Rufus watched Bobby's memory of Young Winchesters and Young Ness.

Bobby: (voice over from 6.16 ...And Then There Were None) "Worked like that together for years."

From 6.16 "...And Then There Were None", in the cemetery, Sam, Ness, Dean, Catty and Bobby stood at Rufus' grave.

Bobby looked at Sam, Dean and Catty. "Kind of like you three knuckleheads."

From 6.16 "...And Then There Were None", outside the warehouse, Bobby and Rufus were posing as FBI.

"Just like old times," Rufus told him.

"Long as I get to drive," Bobby told him.

Rufus laughed. "Hell, no."

Day One

Grand Rapids, Michigan

Night - Old House - Living Room

A woman was on a ladder, scraping the old wallpaper off of a wall in her house, talking on the phone with an earpiece. "I'm not mad, honey. I'm just... outnumbered. This place is way more of a fixer-upper than we thought. Like I'm starting to see why it was on the market for so long. No, I know. You're right. That's right. One room at a time. Starting with this awful wallpaper. Than you. Yeah, love you, too. Okay, bye." She hung up, turning to the wall to the wall, scraping off some more wallpaper, revealing some lines of red paint underneath. She heard a child's scream, turning toward the stairs. "Kat?"

            §

Kat's Room

Kat was sitting on her bed, terrified.

The woman ran inside. "Kat?"

"Mommy?" Kat asked. "Something--something bad is in the house."

"It's just a nightmare, honey," the woman told her.

"But I heard footsteps," Kat told her. "Why did we have to move here? And why is it so cold in my room?"

"Yeah, it is cold in here, huh?" the woman asked. "But the furnace is going to be fixed tomorrow, so just gotta be patient, okay? We all do. Can I get you anything?"

Kat nodded. "I'm thirsty."

"Okay," the woman told her. "One glass of water coming right up. But then, back to sleep. Okay?" Kat nodded. "Okay."

The woman walked out, leaving.

Kat laid down.

The lights went out.

Kat was startled, sitting up.

The door slammed closed by itself.

Kat was terrified, hiding underneath her bed. She could hear footsteps getting closer and closer on the other side of the door.

The shadow of feet were seen near in the light underneath the door.

Kat looked toward the door. "Mama?"

There was no answer.

The door opened with a loud creak.

No one was there.

Kat sat up in confusion.

Behind Kat, a gnarly gray hand reached out, grabbing her, dragging her away.

Kat screamed.

Day Two

Lebanon, Kansas

Morning - The Bunker - Library

Amara was kneeling to the floor in front of Aiden, holding his hands, helping him take a few steps forward. "There you go. You got it. You wanna try it alone now?" Dean and Ness were sitting at the table closest by, and Castiel, Catty and Sabrina were sitting at the table closet to the door, watching them, smiling. Ness was recording on her phone. Amara let go of Aiden's hands. Aiden took the first step forward. Amara smiled. "There you go!" Aiden couldn't do it anymore, nearly falling. Dean stood, swooping Aiden up his arms. Amara looked at Ness. "He almost had it."

Ness smiled, saving the video, putting her phone down.

Sam walked in. "What do we got?"

"Uh, nothing on the Darkness," Ness answered. "Nothing on Ava." Sam looked down. "Keep your head up. We're gonna win this. Remember?"

"Yeah, that was before two weeks of squat," Sam told them.

"Yeah, well, look, nobody said is gonna be easy," Ness told them. She looked at Sam, Dean and Catty. "You know the drill. In the meantime, you three need to hunt. And should one of us want to step in to help, that's fine, too." She pulled out her iPad with a case information on it. "Check this out. Naoki Himura. Said her little girl was attacked by an entity."

Dean looked at the tablet. "Kid's in a coma?"

"Yeah," Ness answered. "Only site of trauma is what the mom is describing as a handprint from the alleged attacker. But no one else was in the house at the time, so..."

"So, Vengeful Spirit?" Castiel asked. "Poltergeist?"

"It's worth finding out," Ness told them. "It's only a couple hours away."

"You really think now is the time to take our eye off the prize?" Sam asked.

"We can't just sit around and--and wait for a lead," Sabrina told them. "You guys can go, you know. Plus, it would be nice to get a win. This case seems like a lay-up."

Catty scoffed. "Yeah? When's the last time we had a lay-up?"

            §

Grand Rapids, Michigan

St. Eligius Hospital - Kat's Hospital Room

Sam, Dean and Catty were posing as FBI, questioning Naoki near the bed where her daughter Kat laid unconscious.

"My wife if flying back, but her flight's been delayed in London, so..." Naoki trailed off, her voice breaking. "I'm alone in all this."

"Well, we're here to help however we can," Sam told her.

"I appreciate that, but why would the FBI have any interest in this?" Naoki asked.

"Just doing our due diligence," Catty told her. "You know what? Why don't you go ahead and tell us about the night of the attack?"

"Nobody believes there was an attack," Naoki told them. "Even the Internet thinks I'm crazy."

"Well, we don't," Dean told her.

"Okay," Naoki told them. "Well... Kat woke up screaming. I thought she was just having a nightmare. But she said she heard footsteps. And that she felt something... bad... in the house."

"Did you also hear footsteps?" Sam asked.

"No," Naoki answered.

"Did you notice anything else?" Catty asked. "Cold spots, or flickering lights?"

"Yeah, actually," Naoki answered. "The lights were out in her room. And it was cold in there. What does that mean?"

"Would you mind if we went and had a look at your house?" Dean asked.

"Sure, yeah, if you think it's gonna help," Naoki answered. "There's a hide-a-key under a painted rock by the front door."

"Great," Sam told her. "Thank you for your help."

"Yeah, sure," Naoki told them.

Sam, Dean and Catty walked out, leaving.

            §

The House - Outside

Sam, Dean and Catty pulled up to the house, getting out of the Impala, walking up the house's walkway.

The next-door neighbor was outside, watering her plants. "Excuse me. Can I help you three?"

"Maybe," Catty answered. "Special Agent Lucia." Sam, Dean and Catty pulled out their fake badges to show her. "These are my partners, Special Agents Rizer and Bean, and we--"

"Why do the FBI keep coming back to that house?" the woman asked.

"Excuse me?" Sam asked.

"A handful of years ago, the FBI came here," the woman told them. "I'm the head of the neighborhood watch, you know, so I asked the two Agents what they were doing here."

"And what'd they say?" Dean asked.

"Not a thing," the woman answered. "They were two of the rudest people I'd ever met."

"Huh," Sam told her. "By any chance were these Agents, um... elder statesmen?"

"Yeah," the woman answered. "Friends of yours?"

Sam, Dean and Catty looked at each other, knowing who that had been that had come here, not sure what to say.

            §

Flashback - A Handful of Years Ago

The House - Outside

Bobby's Car was parked in front of the same house.

            §

Bobby's Car

Bobby was fast asleep in the driver's seat.

A truck pulled up behind him, parking.

The occupant got out of his truck, walking toward Bobby's car, opening and slamming the door.

Bobby woke up with a start, drawing his gun.

The other person was revealed to be Rufus Turner. "Why are you sleeping in your car, Bobby? It's lunchtime."

            §

Outside

Bobby put his gun away, getting out of the car. "What the hell am I doing here?"

"You're helping me with a case, like I told you on the phone," Rufus answered. "You okay?"

They walked toward the house.

"The Apocalypse is on the horizon, and you wanna hunt a damn Ghost?" Bobby asked.

"Well, unless you found a way to stop the end of the world during your little siesta, we got jack all on any of that business," Rufus told him. "I know that Ness is helping Sam, Dean and Catty with the Apocalypse stuff, so I called you. Now, I knew you were in the area, heard about this possible little gig. I thought a win would be nice."

"Oh, wait," Bobby told him. "I'm supposed to be your freaking backup?"

"Yeah, well, if by backup you mean you do all the heavy lifting while I watch," Rufus answered. "It's Sabbath."

"Are you serious?" Bobby asked.

"Deadly," Rufus answered.

"You drove over here," Bobby told him. "Ain't that against the rules?"

"Uh, less talking, more hunting," Rufus told him.

The same nosy neighbor stopped Bobby and Rufus. "Excuse me. What are you gentlemen here for?"

Bobby pulled out his fake FBI badge. "FBI, ma'am. Special Agent Riggs, my partner Special Agent Murtaugh. We're on official FBI business. Nothing to worry about."

"Well, I'm in charge of the neighborhood watch here, sir," the woman told them. "I would like to know what this official business is you're here about."

"It's officially none of your damn business, ma'am," Rufus told her.

The woman looked highly offended.

Bobby gave her a weak smile.

Rufus and Bobby walked toward the house.

"Were you ever nice?" Bobby asked.

"1985," Rufus answered. "Worst year of my life."

Rufus knocked on the door.

            §

Now

Day - The House - Foyer

Sam, Dean and Catty walked into the house, looking around, taking out their EMF readers.

Immediately, all of their meters started to pick up readings.

They split up.

Dean headed to the basement.

Sam went over the ground floor.

Catty checked upstairs.

            §

Later

They met up again downstairs.

Dean was on the phone, having his phone on speaker.

"I'm getting hits everywhere down here," Sam told us.

"Same thing down in the basement," Dean told them.

"Yeah, upstairs as well," Catty told them.

Ness, Castiel, Sabrina and Amara were in the library of the Bunker.

"So, are you saying that Rufus and Grandpa Bobby worked a case there back in the day?" Amara asked.

"Maybe," Dean answered. "I mean, we've had houses with with multiple Ghosts before."

"I don't know, guys," Sam told them. "I mean, the world is small, but it's not that small."

"I've got a couple of my dad's old journals in the trunk of my car," Ness told them. "Why don't I dig into those, dig into the history of the house, see what's what?"

            §

Flashback

Day - Old House - Dining Room

Bobby and Rufus were sitting at the dinner table with the house's previous owner.

"It was our first night in the house," the woman told them. "We had all gone to bed. And then, Will, my son, he called out for help. Said he heard a strange noise. Sounded like footsteps. My husband and I ran to his room, but by the time we got there, my baby was on the ground, unconscious."

"Did you notice anything else that night?" Bobby asked. "Cold spots, or lights flickering?"

"Actually, yes," the woman answered. "Both. Will's room was cold, and the lights were out. The doctors don't know what's wrong with him. Apart from the strange mark on his ankle, there's no sign of trauma."

"How do you mean, strange mark?" Bobby asked.

"It looks like a handprint," the woman explained.

Bobby and Rufus exchanged a look, looking at the woman.

"Well, thank you very much," Bobby told her.

"Uh, do you know of any affordable motels in the area?" Rufus asked.

Bobby gave Rufus a look.

            §

Now

Day - Travel USA Motel - Outside

Sam, Dean and Catty were outside of Travel USA motel, in normal clothes.

Catty and Dean leaned against the Impala.

Sam walked toward them. "Get this. Manager said two FBI Agents stayed here years ago. So, I got the same room. For luck."

Catty smiled a small smile.

            §

Flashback

Day - Motel Room

Rufus was on a bed, reading.

Bobby walked in. "Sorry to disturb reading time, your holiness."

"Do not religiously persecute me, Bobby," Rufus told him. "Tell me something, man. Why were you sleeping in your car earlier?"

Bobby didn't answer, changing the subject. "Cop's got nothing."

"Oh, you're really not gonna answer me, huh?" Rufus asked.

Bobby continued as if he hadn't spoken. "But I got the realtor's report on the house."

"'Cause they legally have to tell you who died in the house before you buy it," Rufus told him. "Look at you, being all smart. So, who died?"

            §

Now

Day - Motel Room

Sam, Dean and Catty were in the motel room, going over their research.

Dean's phone was on speaker on the table.

Ness, Castiel, Sabrina and Amara were at the library in the Bunker, going through Bobby's old journals to see if they could find the right case information.

"There were two deaths at the house," Sam told them. "The first was accidental, and don't laugh. A dude choked on a chicken bone." Dean tried to keep a straight face. Catty raised her eyebrows. "And the other was a murder. A man shot his wife."

"Well, Rufus and my dad were definitely on a Ghost hunt," Ness told them, looking at one of Bobby's journals. Amara was excited to see something left behind by her grandfather, looking over Ness' shoulder to read. Ness read aloud. "'Grand Rapids, Michigan. Possible Ghost hunt with jackass'."

"That's all he wrote?" Amara asked.

"Yeah," Ness answered. "I guess Dad never got around to finishing it. Slacker."

"Okay, so they were either hunting chicken bone or ass-hat," Dean told them "One Ghost breaks bad back then, the other's been marinating until now. The only problem I see is that we don't know what bones Bobby and Rufus burned, so we might have to... dig up two graves."

"I don't know, guys," Castiel told them. "I think there's more to it than that. I mean, something's not right. It's all a little too easy."

"Hey, easy like Sunday morning works for me," Catty told them. "Okay? We could wrap this up quick, get back to hunting the Darkness, get Ava back. I mean, hey, this case is supposed to be a lay-up, right?"

Catty opened the motel room door to leave.

"Yeah, but you were right, Catty," Castiel told her. "You know, I mean, when have we ever had one of those?"

"Come on," Sabrina told them. "You think Bobby and Rufus wasted any time arguing about this kind of crap? Go."

Sam, Dean and Catty walked out of the motel room.

            §

Flashback

Day - Motel - Outside

Bobby and Rufus were leaving the motel room.

"Damn it, Rufus," Bobby told him. "Why you always have to make everything so freaking complicated?"

"What's complicated?" Rufus asked. "I'm just saying it's not a Ghost. It's a Baku."

"What?" Bobby asked.

"A Japanese monster," Rufus answered.

"I know what a Baku is, you dumbass," Bobby told him. "We hunted one together in Alaska."

"All right, I'll bet you a bottle of Johnny that it's a Baku," Rufus told him.

"Well, get ready to buy me a bottle of Johnny, 'cause it ain't a Baku," Bobby told him. "It's a Ghost, plain and simple. And the sooner we get to burning bones, the sooner we can get back to figuring out how to save the world. Now, come on. We got digging to do."

"We?" Rufus repeated. "How man times I gotta tell you, man?" They got into Bobby's car. "Would it kill you to at least wash this damn thing? It smells like roadkill casserole in here."

"Just shut up, ya idjit," Bobby told him.

They drove away, leaving.

            §

Now

Night - Cemetery

Sam, Dean and Catty were in the cemetery after dark. Catty opened a casket to find the body inside had already been burned.

Dean and Catty sighed in exasperation. "Son of a bitch."

"Ashes," Sam told them.

Dean sighed, out of breath. "There's gotta be an easier way to dig graves."

            §

Flashback

Night - Cemetery

Bobby and Rufus were in the cemetery after dark.

Bobby was operating an excavator to dig the grave.

Rufus was watching.

Bobby stopped.

"Why you stopping?" Rufus asked.

Bobby stepped out of the excavator. "'Cause it's your turn."

Bobby handed a shovel to Rufus.

"What, my turn?" Rufus repeated. "Yo--yo, Bobby. Read my lips, Bobby. I cannot help you. All right, it is Sabbath."

"It is after sundown, so get to digging," Bobby told him.

Rufus looked around at the darkness around them. "Good catch." He started digging. "Bobby, can I ask you something?"

"As long as it's not about why I was sleeping in my car earlier," Bobby answered.

"Why were you sleeping in your car earlier?" Rufus asked.

Bobby took a drink from his flask. "Been burning the midnight oil. Last couple of weeks. Up for days. Looking for ways to stop the Apocalypse. Looking for... anything. Sam, Dean and Catty are right in the middle of this thing, and Ness is willing to do anything it takes to help her friends, our family. I'm worried about my daughter, Rufus."

"And you tell Ness that you're this worried about her?" Rufus asked.

"What do you think?" Bobby asked.

"And what'd Ness say?" Rufus asked.

Bobby gave him a look. "What do you think? She doesn't want me to worry."

"Yeah, well, no daughter wants their daddy to worry, Papa bear, least of all your little Ness," Rufus told him. "But you know more than anyone, Bobby. Even if we find a way to keep the world spinning, not everyone's going to be on that bus ride home. Sacrifice, greater good. All that jazz."

"Yeah, I know," Bobby told him.

"Oldest rule of hunting, Bobby," Rufus told him. "You can't save everyone. But I'm not saying that Ness can't be saved."

Rufus hit wood with the shovel.

            §

Now

Night - Cemetery

Sam, Dean and Catty cracked open the next grave.

The boy in this grave had also already been burned.

Catty sighed in exasperation. "Oh, come on!"

"Come on," Dean told them.

They looked at the ashes in the casket, breathing heavily.

"Bobby always was thorough," Sam told them.

"Two ash cans, which means we're not hunting a Ghost," Dean told them.

"So, then, what the hell are we hunting?" Sam asked.

They didn't have an answer yet.

            §

The House - Kat's Room

Naoki was picking up a few of Kat's belongings, walking away.

            §

Hallway

Naoki walked down the hallway.

The lights went out.

There were loud, creaking footsteps approaching.

Naoki looked around in confusion.

There was no one there.

Naoki exhaled. Her breath was visible. She rubbed her arms in an attempt to warm them, starting to walk forward.

The same gnarly, gray hand that had grabbed Kat grabbed Naoki's ankle, pulling her leg out from underneath her, making her fall to the floor.

Naoki dropped the belongings in her arms. She was dragged away, screaming.

            §

Day Three

Day - St. Eligius Hospital - Naoki's Hospital Room

Naoki was now in a coma like Kat was.

Sam, Dean and Catty were posing as FBI.

Catty stood nearby Naoki's unconscious body in her hospital room, on her phone. "Yeah. Thank you. I appreciate it. Bye."

Catty hung up.

Sam and Dean walked toward her.

Sam, Dean and Catty spoke together. "This has happened before. You first."

"Just, come here," Sam told her. Sam and Dean led Catty over to a woman. "Dr. Richards, this is our partner, Special Agent Lucia. This is Dr. Richards. Now, she's retired, but..."

"I still have friends on staff here, so when I heard that two family members had lapsed into unexplained comas, I came in to see if I could help," Dr. Richards told them.

"So, you were here when this happened before," Catty told her.

"Yes," Dr. Richards answered. "Two FBI Agents spoke to me about that case, too."

              §

Flashback

Day - St. Eligius Hospital - Mary Henderson's Hospital Room

Dr. Richards was in the previous owner's hospital room, talking to Bobby and Rufus. "Mary Henderson went home to get her son's favorite doll. When she didn't answer any calls, her husband phoned the police. They found her."

"And she's..." Rufus trailed off.

"Same as her son," Dr. Richards answered. "Weird mark on the ankle. That's it."

"So it's... some kind of coma?" Bobby asked.

"None like I've ever seen," Dr. Richards answered.

"How do you mean?" Rufus asked.

"Well, their vitals are fading rapidly," Dr. Richards answered. "They don't show some signs of rallying soon, I'm worried we may lose them."

              §

Now

Day - St. Eligius Hospital - Naoki's Hospital Room

Sam, Dean and Catty were still talking to Dr. Richards.

"So, what happened?" Dean asked.

"What happened?" Dr. Richards repeated. "I have no idea. The next day, mother and son woke up, both perfectly fine. Obviously, I hope the same thing happens here, with these two... their vitals are failing as well. So..."

"Okay," Sam told her. "Thank you for your time."

Dr. Richards walked out, leaving.

Sam turned to Dean and Catty.

"So, Bobby and Rufus' case," Dean told them.

"It's back, whatever it was," Sam told them. "Is."

Dean looked at Catty. "What'd you find?"

"I talked to the local PD," Catty told them. "The actual cops that found Mary Henderson back in the day and brought her to this hospital."

Sam nodded. "Are the Hendersons still around?"

Catty nodded.

              §

Henderson House - Outside

The Impala pulled up outside the house.

Sam, Dean and Catty out of the Impala, walking toward Mary.

"Mary Henderson?" Dean asked. "Hi. We're Special Agents."

"Oh, God," Mary told them. "Is it happening again? Am I... is my son in danger?"

"No, no," Dean answered. "Everything's--everything's fine. Um, but we--we would like to talk about what happened to your son."

              §

Inside - Living Room

Sam, Dean, Catty and Mary were sitting down in the living room, talking.

"Next thing you know, I woke up in the hospital, and one of the FBI Agents told me to never touch the wallpaper in the sitting room," Mary told them.

"Two people are in great danger," Sam told her. "Anything you can remember, any little detail..."

"I, um..." Mary trailed off. "When I was in the coma, I had a dream. I mean, it was more like a nightmare. It was like I was in the house, but it wasn't the house. Everything was dark. And it looked faded. And at first, I was alone, but then I started to see things."

"What'd you see, exactly?" Dean asked.

"My husband," Mary answered. "He was dead. I closed my eyes, and when I opened them, he was gone. I tried to leave the house, but I couldn't. And then, that's when I started to see them. Spirits, or something. I don't know. Like said, it's all faded now. It's just... a bad dream."

"And what happened when you woke up?" Catty asked.

"Well, we tried to move on," Mary answered. "But I couldn't shake the bad feeling, and so we put the house up for sale. Then the market crashed, so finally we just walked on the mortgage. Which is why we now rent and probably will forever. Destroying our credit was worth it, though. Anything to get away from that damn house."

              §

The House - Living Room

Sam, Dean and Catty went to the house, in the living room.

Catty saw where the wallpaper had been removed, seeing the red poking out from underneath. "Sam! Dean!" Sam and Dean walked in. "Check this out. Look at this." Catty pulled away more of the wallpaper to reveal a Sigil painted on the wall underneath. "You recognize that?"

"No," Sam answered. "Looks like they broke the seal when they were redecorating."

Catty ran her hand over the broken part of the seal.

Dean sighed. "The hell are we hunting?"

              §

Motel Room

(Song:) Nite Life - Willie Nelson

Sam, Dean and Catty were at the motel, sitting at the table, eating, drinking and doing research, talking to the others over the phone that was on speaker on the table. They were in normal clothes.

              §

Flashback

Day - Motel Room

Bobby and Rufus were at the motel, sitting at the table, eating, drinking and doing research.

              §

Now

Day - Motel Room

Sam, Dean and Catty were still researching at the table, still on the phone with the others.

"I got it," Ness told them. In the library at the Bunker, Ness, Amara, Castiel and Sabrina were researching. Ness was looking at a book. "A Soul Eater."

"What is that?" Amara asked.

"Undead creature that feeds on souls," Ness answered. "Hence the name. They exist in a place between our world and... another. Soul Eater moves into a house, and once it does, it makes what the lore refers to as a Nest."

"A place that exists outside of time and space," Castiel told them. Amara looked at the research curiously. "The Nest looks and feels like whatever house the Soul Eater is in."

"So, Mary didn't have a nightmare when she was in her coma," Catty told them. "Remember, she said that she was in her house, but it wasn't her house? She was in the Nest."

Ness looked through the research. "The Soul Eaters aren't really here or there, but apparently, they can muster enough strength to yank their vic's souls out of this world, and into their Nest. And then as soon as the vic's in the Nest, they're outside of our space and time."

"Okay, well, what about Mary seeing her dead husband and her son?" Dean asked.

"Apparently, the Nest messes with their victim's head," Castiel answered. "Shows them things they love, parts of their soul in distress. It keeps the victim's soul vulnerable."

Sabrina sighed, tilting her head. "So, what happens to the meat suits in the real world?"

              §

Flashback

Day - Motel Room

Bobby and Rufus were sitting at the table, researching.

"They wither and die in the real world," Bobby answered.

"Which explains Mary and her son's failing vitals," Rufus told him.

"And the Soul Eater closes up the Nest and moves on to the next house," Bobby told him.

"What happens to the remains of the souls in the Nest?" Rufus asked.

"Well, they wither, too, but they stay with the Soul Eater, keeping it fed in lean times," Bobby answered. "Sorta like a cud."

"Ew," Rufus told him. "Well, that sounds perfectly awful. We gotta kill this bastard, before the Hendersons' bodies wither and die."

"According to the lore, they can't be killed," Bobby told him. "But I'm pretty sure they can be trapped. I think I've faced one of these Soul Eaters before."

Rufus looked at him in shock. "You serious?"

              §

Now

Day - Motel Room

Sam, Dean and Catty were sitting at the table, on the phone.

Ness was showing Amara, Castiel and Sabrina one of Bobby's journals. "There's a case down in Goodlettsville, Tennessee. Dad had a call from another hunter, a guy named Harvey. Uh, he was hunting a case. House was rumored to be chock full of Poltergeists... but he couldn't find the bones to burn, so he calls Dad for backup. Dad high-tails it down there, he goes into the house, buckshots, guns blazing..."

Day - Motel Room

Bobby and Rufus were sitting at the table.

"No, no, no, no, no," Rufus told him. "Do not tell me how you tell it to Ness. Of course that's how you tell it to Ness because you want her to look up to. And Ness actually wants to believe it because you're her hero. Tell me how it really happened. Not the way you tell it to Ness."

"I stepped one foot inside that house, and filled my drawers," Bobby told him. "You could feel the badness, Rufus. I found Harv on the floor, in a coma. I tried to help, but... he looked like he'd been there for days. And then I heard footsteps. I was trapped. But I had this old Celtic sigil. Sort of a break glass in case of emergencies sort of thing. Supposed to trap monsters, but to be honest, the damn thing never worked before. But it was all I had, so I started. And this house is bad juju, it just go a hell of a lot worse. Then I finished the sigil, and once I did, the house went back to normal."

"And, um... Harv?" Rufus asked.

"He never did wake up," Bobby answered guiltily.

"Yeah, well, oldest rule, Bobby," Rufus told him. "The oldest rule." Bobby nodded. "So, um, you actually trapped a Soul Eater?"

Now

Day - Motel Room

Sam, Dean and Catty were sitting at the table, on the phone.

Amara was reading from the journal. "Rufus and Grandpa Bobby put up their sigil, and trapped the Soul Eater in its Nest."

"Right," Sam agreed. "Yeah, and it stayed there until Naoki accidentally broke the sigil's seal, when she redecorated."

"Right," Dean agreed. "Which set the Soul Eater free. Okay, but if their sigil only trapped it, then how did Mary and her son's souls get out of the Nest?"

Catty shrugged. "Maybe the trap forced their souls out. I don't know."

Castiel stood, walking toward the shelves. "You know, there's gotta be more to this."

Castiel took out more research, walking toward the table, sitting down.

"You know, it's too bad Bobby and Rufus aren't around to see this stuff," Sam told them. "They'd have been great Men of Letters."

"Yeah, grumpy old Men of Letters, but, yeah," Catty agreed.

Castiel showed Ness, Amara and Sabrina more research. "Wait a second. Looks like the Men of Letters found a way to kill Soul Eaters."

"Awesome," Dean told them. "How?"

"Well, it looks like it's another sigil, more complicated, and, uh... made from blood," Castiel answered. "You cut your hand and you paint it inside the house, while the same thing is painted... from inside the Nest."

"Which means one of us has to go in there," Dean told them.

"Yeah," Sabrina answered. "And by 'one of us', that means me. Because I'm not risking losing either one of your souls getting lost in that Nest."

"Yeah, well, I don't think the Soul Eater's gonna be going after you, Sabrina," Amara told her. "I mean, as far as we know, it only goes after Human souls."

"The Nest is just like another Veil, Amara," Sabrina told her. "And Dad taught me how to cross the Veil to talk to dead people before. I can pass the Veil to get into the Nest, kick this thing's ass and paint the sigil to kill it and release all the souls inside."

Ness sighed, nodding. "Sound plan."

Castiel sighed.

Night - The House - Living Room

Sam, Dean, Sabrina and Catty were in the house, walking into the living room.

"All right, you guys paint here," Sabrina told them. She walked into the next room, looking at the other side of the same wall. "I'll paint mine here. Now, your sigil sets the table. Mine actually kills it."

"All right," Catty told her. "You got the blood?"

"Right here," Sabrina answered, holding up a jar of blood.

Dean held up their jar of blood. "All right, let's do this."

It was after dark in the same house.

Rufus was busy painting the trapping sigil on one of the walls.

Bobby watched. "If memory served, things are about to get hairy."

"You wanna hold my hand?" Rufus asked.

They heard the floors creaking, and footsteps.

Bobby looked at Rufus. "Keep painting, Picasso."

Bobby walked away to investigate, walking upstairs.

Night - The Nest House - Living Room

Sabrina's body might not have been in the Nest, but her mind was.

Sabrina was sitting on the floor she would have been sitting in in the real world, opening her eyes, standing. She was apparently alone, in the Nest that looked exactly like the house, except darker and more creepy. "Mom?" She walked toward a door. "Mom?" She pushed the door open, seeing Catty and Castiel on the floor in the next room, dead. She looked overt the rest of the room. Dean, Ness and Amara were on the floor, dead. Aiden was on the floor, covered in blood, crying. Sam was lying on the floor, covered in blood, desperately trying to get away. Octavia/Lucifer stood over Sam, grabbing him by his collar, raising Octavia's Angel Sword to stab him. He looked over her shoulder toward Sabrina, smiling evilly. Sabrina was startled and unnerved, closing her eyes or a moment. She opened them. Everything was gone. Sabrina took a deep breath, knowing that it was just the Nest playing tricks on her, trying to reassure herself. "Okay."

Upstairs Hallway

Bobby woke up in the Nest. He stood, looking around. "Rufus?" He looked over the banister down the stairs, gasping. "Oh, God!"

Ness was at the bottom of the stairs, covered in blood, dead.

Bobby closed his eyes, shaking his head a little. He opened his eyes.

Ness was gone.

Bobby sighed, knowing that it was the Nest playing tricks on him.

He heard a little boy's voice behind him. "Are you real?"

Bobby turned around to face the boy. "Will Henderson?"

"Yes, sir," Will answered. "Am I in trouble?"

"No, no, no, son, not at all," Bobby answered. "My name's Bobby Singer, and I'm... I'm here to... well, I'm stuck here, too. But, uh, I'm gonna take care of you, okay? Have you seen your mother?"

"No," Will answered.

"Have you seen anyone... strange?" Bobby asked.

"You mean the sad people?" Will asked.

"The who?" Bobby asked.

"They're right behind you," Will told him. Bobby turned around. There were two people behind him, pale and staring. Bobby didn't see them. "They look sick. You don't see them?"

"No," Bobby answered. "But, uh... we're gonna get outta here. My friend's gonna help us."

Rufus was at the bottom of the stairs of the house. "Bobby?" He ran up the stairs to find Bobby unconscious in the hall. "Bobby? Bobby. Bobby!" He heard the floor creaking. "Oldest damn rule, Bobby. Oldest rule. I'm sorry."

Rufus ran downstairs to finish the sigil.

Now

Night - The House - Living Room

Sam, Dean and Catty looked at Sabrina's body.

Sabrina was still sitting on the floor against the wall, her legs crossed, her hands on her knees. Her eyes were still completely white, glowing blue from within.

Dean waved a hand in front of Sabrina's face, not receiving a reaction. He snapped his fingers in her face and in her ears, but she still didn't respond. He looked at Catty. "Can Sabrina see us?"

"No," Catty answered. "She can't hear us, either. Sow's mind's somewhere in the Nest. She won't be able to move her body until she comes back to us."

Sam realized something, pointing at Catty. "This is like that time Sabrina went over into the Veil to talk to Candy so we could find Mrs. Tran, isn't it?"

"Yeah," Catty answered. "Come on. Let's finish the sigil so we can kill this bastard."

Night - The Nest House - Foyer

Sabrina was getting to work on painting her sigil, hearing a little girl's voice. "What are you doing?"

Sabrina turned to see Kat behind her. "It's Kat, right?" Kat nodded. "It's nice to meet you, Kat."

"I'm not supposed to talk to strangers," Kat told her.

"And that, that is a solid rule," Sabrina told her. "My name's Sabrina Winchester. See? Now I'm not a stranger. I'm here to get you out of this place. Have you seen your mom?"

"I can't see her," Kat told her. "It's too crowded in here now."

Sabrina looked around.

A group of faceless, staring people with darkness around their eyes around their eyes and mouths appeared, crowding around Kat and Sabrina.

Sabrina looked at Kat. "Yeah, I can see that."

"You can see them?" Kat asked.

"Yeah," Sabrina answered.

"How?" Kat asked. "You just got here."

"That... is a long story," Sabrina told her. "I would tell it, but how about we get you out of here instead?"

Kat nodded.

"Your mom's around here somewhere," Bobby told him. "We look for her, stick together, okay?"

Will found Mary. "Mommy!"

Will ran toward Mary.

"No, wait, I said stick together," Bobby told him.

All of a sudden, Bobby noticed the others that had surrounded him.

A gray, gnarly, Spirit-like monster emerged from among the crowd. This was the Soul Eater. He pressed its hand against Bobby's chest.

Bobby fell to the floor.

"Bobby?" Rufus asked. He saw his eyes, pulling out his shotgun. "Whoa."

"Shoot me, you kill your friend," Bobby/The Soul Eater told him.

"Rock salt," Rufus told him. "Bobby can handle it."

"Now, now," Bobby/Soul Eater told him. "No need to hurt anyone. Just come along with me. Into the nest."

"Why?" Rufus asked. "So you can show me a bunch of messed up stuff in there while my fabulous body rots out here? I don't think I wanna take that ride."

Night - The Nest House - Foyer

Sabrina was painting her sigil on the wall.

Kat watched. "It's pretty."

"Thanks," Sabrina told her.

"I don't like it here," Kat told her.

"Yeah, me neither," Sabrina told her. "And my mom, and my uncles Sam and Dean? They're making a painting just like this one, and when I'm done with this here, we're outta here. Okay?"

Kat nodded.

Sabrina turned back to the sigil, continuing to paint.

The Soul Eater emerged through the crowd of people, soaring toward Sabrina, pushing her against the wall to stop her from finishing the sigil. "I can't let you finish that finger painting, girl."

Sabrina tried to punch the Soul Eater in the face, but her hand passed through the mist. She glared at the Soul Eater in annoyance.

              §

The Soul Eater pushed Sabrina away but barely made her move. "Just stay here with me. In the Nest. I can bring your family here. Keep them safe. From the Darkness. From your aunt Octavia."

"Oh, please," Sabrina told him. "It's not my Aunt Ava that they need protection from. It's Lucifer. But guess what? I'm gonna take care of Lucifer and save Aunt Ava right after I take care of you."

Rufus was still aiming the shotgun at Bobby/Soul Eater.

"Rufus, I can't let you trap me," Bobby/Soul Eater told him.

"Ooh," Rufus told him tauntingly. "Then we got a problem then, don't we?"

Bobby/Soul Eater approached him.

Rufus shot him with the shotgun, but it didn't have an effect. Bobby/Soul Eater punched Rufus in the face, taking the shotgun from him, using it to hit Rufus in the head, trying to hit him again. Rufus caught the shotgun, punching Bobby/Soul Eater in the face, making him drop the gun.

Night - The Nest House - Foyer

Sabrina looked at the Soul Eater, focusing into turning her spirit into more like his so she could fight him with direct contact. She punched him in the stomach, then the face twice, kneeing him in the stomach, trying to punch him again. The Soul Eater drifted back into mist to make her miss, trying to punch her. Sabrina ducked, spinning around to elbow him in the face, making him fall back into the wall behind him. She put a hand to his head to try and smite him, but he was like a Spirit, and already dead, so that wouldn't kill him.

"You didn't really think that would work, did you?" the Soul Eater asked.

"No, not really," Sabrina answered, punching him in the face four times, kicking him in the stomach, making him fall back to the wall, turning to add more to the sigil, almost finished.

The Soul Eater slithered closer. "You know that whoever wins the war, the Darkness or the Devil, everyone else loses. You know that you lose."

"The only one who's losing tonight is you," Sabrina told him, using magic to push him back against the wall.

The Soul Eater fell to the floor, standing, trying to punch Sabrina in the stomach. Sabrina backed away enough to make him miss. The Soul Eater tried to punch her. Sabrina ducked. The Soul Eater tried to slash into her with Ghost-like talons on his hands. Sabrina caught his wrist, twisting it back, but it wouldn't break since he wasn't solid. She pushed him back into the wall, punching him in the face. The Soul Eater tried to punch her in the face. Sabrina ducked, running toward him, grabbing him, turning around to throw him through the souls and the Spirits of the victims that he had trapped in the Nest, making him fall through them to the floor.

Sabrina turned to finish the sigil with the blood.

The Soul Eater stood, drifting toward Sabrina.

Sabrina finished the sigil.

The sigil started to glow.

Kat and Naoki disappeared.

Rufus looked into Mary's hospital room to see Mary and Will awake from their comas, reuniting with Mary's husband.

"So, what happened?" Bobby asked. "It was a trap spell. We should be trapped, too."

"It was a Baku, Bobby," Rufus told him. "I killed it while you slept. That'll be one bottle of Johnny, please."

Bobby rolled his eyes. "It wasn't a damn--"

"Trap sigil pushed your souls out," Rufus told him. "Case closed. You're welcome."

"I don't like it," Bobby told him.

"Who gives a damn what you like?" Rufus asked. "Take the win."

"Yeah, yeah," Bobby told him.

"You okay, Bobby?" Rufus asked.

Bobby sighed. "I'm fine."

"Nah, you saw something," Rufus told him. "In the Nest. It was about Ness, wasn't it. Didn't you?" Bobby didn't answer. "You saw Ness dead, didn't you, Bobby?"

"Yes, it was about Ness," Bobby answered. "I saw Nessie dead. And I saw... well, I don't know what the hell I saw."

"Yeah, well, forget the oldest rule, Bobby," Rufus told him. "Ness is gonna be just fine."

"Are you getting soft on me, Rufus?" Bobby asked.

"Yeah, soft this," Rufus told him, hanging up on him.

Bobby sighed, hanging up. "Idjit."

Bobby was sitting at his desk, pulling out his journal to write about the case. He heard the front door open, looking up.

Ness walked in. "Hey, Dad. How was the case?"

"Eventful," Bobby answered.

"Rufus being a jackass?" Ness asked.

"As usual," Bobby answered. He stood, picking up the bottle of Johnny Walker Blue, walking closer. "But I did win a bet, so he did have to get me one of these."

Ness smiled. "Ooh. Must have been one hell of a bet if he got you his favorite." She smiled, picking up her jacket. "Anyway, just got home from TJz, but there's no time to slow down. Think you got time to go up to Maine? Catty and the boys got a possible lead on Lilith, but they're on a case in Reno, so I was hoping that you could come with me. Come on. I wanna pay that bitch back for possessing me long enough to send Catty to Hell. Just you and me. A father/daughter hunt. When do we ever have time for a father/daughter hunt? I mean, you're always hunting with Rufus, and I'm always working, or we're always helping the Winchesters... which I love to do because they're like family, and I know that you love helping them, too. And I know that you're always worried, but come on." Bobby was obviously still thinking about what the Soul Eater had made him see in the Nest, embracing Ness suddenly. Ness was surprised, but returned the embrace, smiling a small smile. "What was that for?"

Bobby pulled away, shaking his head. "Nothing."

Ness tilted her head skeptically, unconvinced. "Dad."

Bobby shrugged. "Well, you're right, Nessie. Always am worried, but know that I can't stop you. Not that I want to. Just wanna make sure you're okay."

"Then come with me," Ness told him. "You can keep an eye on your little girl long enough to help me follow a lead on a possible dead end. Hey, at least if Lilith's not in Maine, then we still get to blow off the day."

"All right," Bobby told her. "Let's go, Ness. Ya idjit."

Ness smiled, turning around, walking out, leaving.

Bobby grabbed his jacket. He watched her go, smiling a small smile, walking out, leaving.

The Bunker - Library

The family was talking in the library.

Amara looked at Sabrina in confusion. "Okay. You know, Grandpa Bobby's journal never mentioned going into the Nest. It didn't say anything, actually. You think it really was him, or..."

"I don't know," Sabrina told them. "Maybe it's like--like you said before. That Bobby and Rufus' trap sigil forced their souls out of the Nest back then. And that the Soul Eater was just making me see things."

Ness was thinking. "However, if my dad did go into the Nest back then, and, remember, the Nest exists outside of space and time, then... well, theoretically, Sabrina and my dad could have been there at the same time."

Sabrina, Amara, Sam, Dean and Catty were stunned, confused. "What?"

Castiel shook his head. "Even I'm confused."

Dean looked at Ness. "Let's get drunk and not think about this ever again. I could use one of your TJz specialty drinks."

"I second that," Sam told her.

Catty raised her hand. "Third."

Castiel nodded. "Agreed."

"Even Amara and me?" Sabrina asked.

Dean, Ness, Castiel and Catty spoke together. "No, not you."

Sabrina and Amara exchanged a disappointed look, sighing.

Sam chuckled.

Castiel frowned. "Sow, you said the Soul Eater made you see things. Plural. So... what else did you see?"

"I saw you," Sabrina answered. "I saw all of you. Dead on the floor. With Aunt Ava standing over you, with an Angel Blade in her hand, possessed by Lucifer. He would've been the one to kill you."

Catty sighed, tilting her head. "Sow, that's so not gonna happen."

Sabrina tried to convince herself. "Yeah."

Amara looked at Sabrina sympathetically, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

Sabrina managed a small smile.

Sam, Dean, Catty, Ness and Castiel looked at each other somberly.

Ness stood to pour them a few drinks.

They spent the rest of the time drinking and trying to relieve the pressure and the stress every single one of them were under.
