chapter 21 - Monsters in the End

Outfits in the external link

From 1.20 "Someone to Watch Over Me", in Spencer's room, Spencer and Peyton walked into the room to see police combing through the room, like they were doing for Peyton's room. Veronica, Madison, Lucy and Pen followed.

Mara: (voice over) "Previously on Worlds Colliding (Pretty Little Liars)"

"They served a search warrant," Veronica told them.

"Make them get out," Spencer told her.

Veronica sighed, shaking her head. "I can't. You're people of interest in a murder investigation."

From 1.19 "A Person of Interest", in the Sheriff's station, the girls and Mara were talking. Garrett walked closer.

"Garrett?" Lucy asked.

"You're a cop now?" Mara asked.

From 1.19 "A Person of Interest", in the parking lot, Spencer and Toby kissed.

"I was not expecting that," Spencer admitted.

Toby chuckled. "Me neither."

From 1.19 "A Person of Interest", in the woods, Emily and Paige were sitting at their picnic.

"I had an amazing time last night, and I would really like to keep seeing you," Paige told her.

"Like this?" Emily asked. "Always in the middle of nowhere?"

From 1.20 "Someone to Watch Over Me", in Ella's classroom, Aria, Evan and Ella were talking.

Evan looked at Aria tauntingly. "So who is it? Somebody we know?"

"I think I'm gonna have to start looking in the hallways to see if I can guess who it is," Ella told her.

From 1.20 "Someone to Watch Over Me", in the McCoy House, Dakota was arguing with Caleb. "You were spying on me the whole time."

Caleb shook his head. "No, not the whole time."

Caleb went to put a hand on Dakota's shoulder.

Dakota pushed it away. "Don't touch me."

Later when she was alone, Dakota was in the kitchen, cooking. The steam got into her eyes, but didn't know that was what made them water enough to shed a tear.

Veronica: (voice over from 1.20 Someone to Watch Over Me) "They found some fibers..."

From 1.20 "Someone to Watch Over Me", in Peyton's room, Spencer, Peyton and Veronica were talking.

"Some threads caught in a bracelet," Veronica explained.

"The ones Alison and Pen gave us?" Spencer asked.

"I think someone's going to a great deal of trouble to make you look guilty," Veronica told them.

Peyton was starting to freak out. Spencer was almost crying, holding Peyton in an embrace.

Day One

Morning - The Brew

The girls were sitting at a table and the lounge area to talk about what Veronica had told Spencer and Peyton. Dakota was gazing off at nothing.

"Do you think somebody rubbed that sweater on your bracelet?" Lucy asked.

"Somebody?" Madison repeated. "Try Ian." She looked at Peyton and Spencer. "He's doing everything he can to make you look guilty. Your parents should hire you a 24-hour bodyguard."

"What about Jenna?" Hanna asked. "What if she paid Caleb to get that bracelet?"

"Wait, when was Caleb in Spencer's house?" Emily asked.

"He doesn't need an invitation, Em," Pen told her.

"He broke into a vending machine with a spork," Aria told them.

Peyton looked past them, out of the windows. "Guys? I think somebody's watching us."

They looked outside toward life-like mannequins.

"Those?" Spencer asked. "They're for the Founder's Festival."

"Man, if that's what Rosewood's Founding Family looked like, how did they ever get anyone to move here?" Dakota asked.

"And why were they allowed to reproduce?" Pen asked.

"Guys, if Caleb was..." Emily trailed off. Dakota looked down, looking away. Emily noticed. "Kota, we know this is hard for you, but we have to talk about him."

Lucy nodded in agreement. "If we want to help Peyton and Spencer, we have to know what Caleb knows."

"Guys, there is definitely somebody out there," Dakota told them.

They thought Dakota was just trying to change the subject.

"Maybe if Emily, Madison, Lucy, Pen and I cornered Caleb, not in school, but somewhere that's Jenna-free," Hanna told them.

"If Caleb's gonna talk to anyone, it's gonna be Dakota," Pen told them.

They all looked at Dakota.

"Will you do it?" Aria asked.

"To help Peyton and Spencer, sure," Dakota answered.

"Thanks, Kota," Peyton told her.

Dakota nodded.

They stood, walking out.

Dakota stood, walking toward the window, looking outside.

"Dakota?" Lucy asked. "Are you coming?"

"Yeah," Dakota answered.

Dakota followed them outside.

Outside across the street, Garrett had been standing behind the mannequins, watching the girls.

Opening Credits

(Song:) Secret - The Pierces

A closeup of Lucy's brown eyes showed her applying mascara to her lashes.

The Pierces: (voice over) "Got a secret."

Dakota applied lipgloss to her lips with a small brush.

The Pierces: (voice over) "Can you keep it?"

Spencer fastened her black high heel.

The Pierces: (voice over) "Swear this one you'll save."

Hanna curled a piece of her blonde hair.

Madison painted her nails pink.

The Pierces: (voice over) "Better lock it."

Aria applied eyeshadow to her eye.

The Pierces: (voice over) "In your pocket."

Pen stood next to Alison's coffin, closing her eyes.

The Pierces: (voice over) "Taking this one."

Emily folded Alison's arms over her chest.

The Pierces: (voice over) "To the grave."

Mara, Lucy and Emily closed the coffin.

The Pierces: (voice over) "If I show you then I know you."

The girls were standing around Alison's coffin, all in black funeral dresses.

The Pierces: (voice over) "Won't tell what I said."

There was a closeup of Pen. She put a finger to her lips. "Shh."

The Pierces: (voice over) "'Cause two can keep a secret."

Pen disappeared.

A message appeared in the clouds that had been behind her.

Worlds Colliding (Pretty Little Liars)

The Pierces: (voice over) "If one of them is dead."

Hastings House - Kitchen

Melissa was going through her medications.

Veronica was getting herself some cereal. "What's the purple one?"

"Folic acid," Melissa answered. "Dr. Barone's new nurse chatted my ear off about it. Really just an excuse so she could ask questions about our family."

"What kind of questions?" Veronica asked.

"Mom, everyone in town's talking about us," Melissa told her. "The bracelet, the police marching out of here with bags."

Veronica put the milk away. "What did you say, to this nurse?"

Melissa scoffed. "Nothing, but you know the second I left, she probably told the others that Spencer and Peyton were gonna be wearing handcuffs at my baby shower."

Peyton and Spencer were walking down the stairs when they heard this.

Veronica noticed them. "Morning, sweeties. You want some yogurt? I have--I have fresh berries."

"No, I already ate, thanks," Peyton told them.

"What were you talking about?" Spencer asked.

Veronica cleared her throat. "The Founders' Festival. Your sister and Ian are thinking of helping Mrs. Ackard with the church booth."

Peyton rolled her eyes, sighing sarcastically. "Fun."

"Actually, I'd like you to join them," Veronica told them.

"You get on Mrs. Ackard's good side, and no one in town would--" Melissa started.

"Why do we need to be on her good side?" Peyton asked, pouring coffee.

"Because people are talking and jumping to a lot of conclusions," Melissa answered. She checked Spencer's ringing phone. "It's Toby."

Spencer tried to answer it.

Veronica pulled her phone away. "Honey, I'd prefer it if you'd not have any contact with him until this situation is behind us."

"Why?" Spencer asked. "What does Toby have to do with anything? He's a friend."

"You need to be careful about who you associate with," Veronica told them.

"So, what?" Spencer asked. "I'm just supposed to ignore him, not speak to him?"

"Yes," Veronica answered. "Spencer, listen to me. You both need to be at the festival. If you're not, your neighbors are gonna think you have something to hide."

Peyton scoffed. "I don't really care what my neighbors think."

"They're not just neighbors, Peyton, they're potential jurors," Veronica told her. "And most verdicts are decided in living rooms, and town fairs." Peyton and Spencer looked at Melissa, who looked a little smug at their discomfort and struggle. "Just take Toby out of that equation, okay?"

McCoy House - Kitchen

Dakota was looking at the open fridge, staring at nothing.

Jean walked in, in uniform. "Good morning. So... I have to be at work tonight, but do you want to wait so we can have dinner together and..."

"I'll grab something after school," Dakota told her.

Jean grabbed a coffee cup and the pot. "Okay." She poured herself some coffee. "Did... Caleb move back in with his foster family?" Dakota shrugged, shaking her head. "Do you want to tell me why he moved out so quickly?"

Dakota sighed. "There's... nothing to tell."

Dakota closed the fridge, sitting down at the counter, sighing.

"Look, if you would rather stay home from work and from school, have a mental health day..." Jean trailed off.

"I'm good, Mom," Dakota told her.

Jean sighed, putting her cup down. "I know something happened that night. And I know that you don't want to talk about it or think about it. But I just want you to know that I am here if you want to talk to me. I just... I hate seeing you get hurt."

"Well, thanks for the pep talk, but I'm not hurt," Dakota told her, grabbing her bag, standing. "I'll see tonight."

Dakota walked out, leaving. Jean watched her go, sighing, knowing that she was not fine like she wanted everyone to believe, that she was using indifference and anger as a mask to hide the hurt.

Marin House - Kitchen

Ashley, Hanna and Madison were eating breakfast at the table.

They heard Mona's voice. "Knock-knock."

"In here, Mona," Hanna told her.

Mona walked in, looking at Ashley. "Morning, Mrs. M."

"Hi, Mona," Madison told her.

Mona smiled. "Ooh, can I steal some of that coffee?"

"Sure," Ashley answered, pouring her coffee.

Madison looked at Hanna. "You sure things are good for you and Sean?"

"As good as they can be right now," Hanna answered. "I mean, we're cool after everything. Just need some excitement. We're going to the festival together."

"Well, hopefully there'll be excitement there," Madison told her, standing. "You guys ready?"

"Yeah, let's go," Mona answered.

"Thanks for the ride, Mona," Madison told her.

Mona smiled. "Oh, no probs, Maddy."

Madison, Hanna and Mona walked out of the house. Ashley watched them go, chuckling.

Rosewood High School - Hallway

Pen and Lucy were standing at Lucy's locker.

Caleb walked up to them. "Got a second?"

Lucy looked around. "Um..." She sighed. "Sure."

Caleb sighed. "Look, I don't know what Dakota's told you..."

"Everything," Pen answered. "See, Lucy, Madison, Peyton and I might have our group of friends. And Spencer, Aria, Dakota, Hanna and Emily have their group of friends. But we're all still friends. And we all still tell each other everything."

"Then maybe you can help me," Caleb told them. "Dakota's having a hard time hearing how sorry I am. She won't take my calls, she looks the other way whenever I see her."

"Caleb, have this conversation with Dakota," Lucy told him, closing her locker. "Okay?"

Pen and Lucy walked away.

Courtyard

Emily and Lucy were talking. Mara wallked up to them, pulling them toward a bench away from everyone.

Emily smiled. "What are you doing?"

Mara laughed. "I got 'em. I got the tickets."

Emily smiled in shock. "No way. I thought they were sold out."

"I know somebody at Hollis who works for college events," Mara explained.

"That's awesome," Emily told her. "How much was it?"

Emily went to pull out money from her bag.

Mara grabbed her hand. "My treat. I wanna take my sisters out for concert."

"Those tickets were expensive," Lucy told her.

"Lucy, I can handle two tickets," Mara told her.

"Well, I was thinking about talking to someone from Sheridan Prep," Emily explained. "They have a campus pride group, and I was thinking of taking Paige to help her. It's not like we can go to a meeting, though. Their school is, like, two miles from here. Paige is probably gonna ditch out on it, though, and I don't wanna go alone."

"Would it help if we went with you?" Mara asked.

Emily shrugged, nodding. Lucy looked between Mara and Emily. Mara shrugged.

Inside - Hallway

Aria walked through the hall, finding Ezra at a vending machine, walking closer.

"Hey," Ezra told her.

"Hi," Aria told him, speaking softly. "So, can we talk about this weekend, the festival?" She saw that Ella was walking down the hall, knocking over Ezra's coffee, making it spill. "Oh, God! I am so sorry. Did I do that?" They knelt down to clean it up, whispering. "Um, sorry. Look, how do you feel about a stay at home weekend instead, your place, with me?"

Ezra nodded. "Yeah. What's going on?"

Students walked by.

"Oh, did I get it on your shoes?" Aria asked. "I am such a spazz." She went back to whispering. "Look, we can just talk about it later."

Ezra whispered. "Sure. My classroom, after school."

"No, we can't," Aria whispered. "Can we just do this over dinner?"

"Sure," Ezra answered.

They stood, throwing the napkins they used to clean up the coffee away.

---- -----

Courtyard

Dakota walked into the courtyard to see Caleb sitting at a table with a laptop. She hesitated, looking around, taking a deep breath, walking toward him. "Mind if I join you?"

"Uh, no," Caleb answered, clearly surprised and taken off-guard."I mean, yes, please." Dakota sat down. "So, we're talking?"

"What does Jenna want?" Dakota asked. "Why was she willing to pay you to live in my house?"

"I told you, I gave the money back," Caleb told her.

"What did she ask you to do?" Dakota asked. "Record our conversations? Rifle through my bag, the drawers in the bedroom? What does she want?"

Caleb looked around, sighing. "A key. She offered me a lot of money to look for a key."

"A key to what, my house?" Dakota asked. "I gave you that."

"No," Caleb answered. "She thinks that your friend, the one who died, may have given Pen or one of you girls a key."

"Ali didn't die," Dakota told him. "She was murdered. What kind of key?"

"Jenna didn't know," Caleb told her. "And as soon as I realized something was happening between you and me, I told her to back off." Dakota looked away. "Dakota, what's with you guys and Jenna Cavanaugh? Why did she need me? Why couldn't she just ask you directly?"

"You know what?" Dakota asked. "You don't get to ask questions. What else?"

"If I knew more, so would you," Caleb told her. He sighed. "I miss you."

Dakota looked up. "Yeah? You'll get over it."

Dakota stood, walking away.

Ezra's Apartment

Aria used the key underneath the doormat to get into the apartment, on the phone. "Okay, I'm back."

Peyton voice was on the other line. "Hey, is Fitz there?"

"No, he got pulled into some faculty thing, so he texted me to order some food," Aria explained.

Pen, Lucy, Spencer and Peyton were in Peyton's room, studying.

"So you guys are still texting?" Pen asked. "Wow. I would have thought after that thing with your mom and Evan..."

"He doesn't know about that," Aria admitted. "If he thinks my parents or my brother are sniffing us out, it'll just make him paranoid, not romantic."

"Yeah, tell me about it," Spencer told her. "I still don't know if Toby thinks I set him up with that sweater."

"Wait, you haven't talked to him yet?" Lucy asked.

"No, he left me a message saying that he couldn't meet me after school," Spencer explained.

Pen looked at her phone. "I gotta go. I have somewhere to be."

"Okay," Lucy told her. "You good to go alone?"

"Yeah," Pen answered, standing, pulling on her jacket. "I think my paranoia's dying down a little, but my paranoia is high, so..."

Lucy chuckled, standing. "Pen, it's okay if you don't wanna go alone. With everything you've been through with Ali and A... I think we all understand it. I have to go home and talk to my mom and Mara anyway, so..."

Peyton chuckled. "You two have fun."

They walked out.

Aria hung up, sitting at Ezra's computer, which beeped on, showing a profile page for Ezra. She saw a picture of Ezra with Jackie Molina in Florence, Italy, with an engagement ring on her hand. Her phone rang. She answered. "Hey."

Ezra's voice was on the other line. "Hey, it's me. Uh, yeah, this meeting's running a bit long." He was in the school hallway. "Did you order dinner yet?

"Um, you know what?" Aria asked. "I--I can't stay."

"Is something wrong?" Ezra asked.

Aria shook her head. "No, no. Um, we'll just--we'll talk later, okay?"

They hung up. Aria was still looking at the picture of Jackie and Ezra.

McCoy House - Dakota's Room

The girls were gathered in Dakota's room to talk about what Caleb had told her.

"A key?" Madison repeated. "A key for what?"

Dakota sighed. "That's what I said."

"Was it a key to Ali and Pen's house?" Peyton asked. "Her locker at the tennis club?"

"Why would Jenna want that?" Hanna asked. "What was she gonna do? Sniff Ali's old sweat socks?"

"If Jenna's A, she's looking for any information on us she can get," Spencer told them.

Hanna looked at Dakota. "I cannot believe that he went through your closet and your nightstand. What a jerk."

"He's a total creep," Madison told them.

"He's an animal," Peyton told them.

"Easy, guys," Lucy told them. She looked at Dakota. "He looked through your stuff. He didn't invade Poland."

"Why are you sticking up for him?" Spencer asked. "He broke her trust."

"He went behind her back," Emily told her.

"He stuck his hands in her panty drawer," Hanna told her. Dakota gave them a look. "We're sorry."

"Okay, all I'm saying is that somebody can look through someone else's stuff that they're not supposed to be looking through," Aria told them.

"You wanna translate that into speech?" Pen asked.

Aria sighed. "I saw Ezra's website page. Look, I--I knocked on his desk, and his laptop screen came up."

"So, big deal," Dakota told her. "What's the juiciest thing on his status update? 'Ezra Fitz had joined the Mark Twain fan page'?"

"How about he has a double life?" Aria asked.

"Wait," Hanna told her. "I thought that you were his double life."

"Fine," Madison told them. "Triple life."

Aria sighed. "There was this picture of him cozying up to some girl wearing an engagement ring in Italy."

"What's her name?" Peyton asked.

"Jackie," Aria answered.

"How do you know she wasn't his cousin?" Emily asked.

"'Cause in picture number three, they were licking each other's Gelato," Aria answered. "I mean, guys, seriously, what do I do?"

"Be honest with him," Lucy answered. "Explain what happened and see what he says."

"Yeah, and remember, people can look guilty of something even if they're completely innocent," Peyton told them.

"Okay, you know what?" Hanna asked. "Screw that. Make a fake profile, 'friend' Jackie, comb through that skank's page, and nail his ass to the wall."

They looked at her in surprise, exchanging a weird look.

"Or we can do what Lucy says," Madison told them.

They looked at each other.

Cavaunaugh House - Outside

Toby was working on his bike. Spencer walked up to him.

"Hey, how are you?" Toby asked.

"Relieved that you're speaking to me," Spencer answered. "I wasn't sure if you'd heard the cops' theory about Peyton and me planting evidence."

"We shouldn't talk about this," Toby told her.

"So you do think it was us?" Spencer asked.

"No, of course not," Toby answered. "But I can't say the same for my family." They saw a police car pulling up. Toby stood. "Spencer, you should go home. Those guys have a way of adding two and two and coming up with five. I'll stop by your place later."

"Um, I'm not sure that that's such a good idea," Spencer admitted.

"Why not?" Toby asked. "Because your parents don't want you near me? Makes sense."

"How about the festival?" Spencer asked. "Maybe we could meet up behind a tent, or the funhouse." Jenna walked outside. "7 o'clock?"

"Toby, I need you to drive me to school," Jenna told him. "I have a makeup test."

"Okay, just let me get cleaned up," Toby told her.

Spencer held up seven fingers. She and Toby both smiled. Spencer walked away.

Street

Peyton was walking down the street.

Garrett was in the police car that followed Peyton, getting out. "Hey, Peyton. Uh, how's it going?"

"You tell me, Garrett," Peyton told him. "I thought you were on our side."

"I don't get to have personal feelings when I'm in uniform," Garrett told her.

Peyton crossed her arms over her chest. "Well, if you put on a pair of jeans, this would be called stalking."

Garrett looked away. "Peyton, look.  If being trailed is gonna help clear your name, better it's me than someone who thinks you're guilty."

Peyton didn't answer, walking away.

The Brew

(Song:) Upside Down - Garrison Starr

Mara, Emily and Lucy walked into the brew, looking around. Lucy went to sit down.

A blonde woman was waiting nearby. "Hey, are you Emily?"

"What?" Lucy asked. "Oh, no. I'm Lucy." Mara and Emily walked closer. "Emily's my sister."

"Hi," Mara told her. "I'm Mara. Lucy. Emily. Better known as Fields sisters."

Samara chuckled.

 "Are you..." Emily trailed off.

"Samara," the woman answered. "I go to Sheridan Prep. Member of the campus pride group. Did your friend tell you?"

"Yeah, sorry," Emily answered. "Didn't realize you'd be so... punctual."

---- -----

Montgomery House - Aria's Room

Dakota, Madison, Hanna, Pen and Aria were looking at a laptop.

"Okay, so even though we can't see her profile, Jackie and Mr. Fitz..." Hanna trailed off.

"Ezra," Aria corrected.

"Went to the same college," Hanna finished. "So I looked up alumni and punched in random names until I found a girl who already didn't have a page."

"Tonya Freeman?" Pen asked.

"Yep," Madison answered.

"Who's that?" Pen asked.

"Who cares?" Madison asked.

Aria sighed. "This is starting to feel so wrong."

"Hey, it's so not," Madison told them. "Look, wee don't want what happened to Dakota to happen to you. Right, Dakota?"

Dakota looked up. "What?"

"Fool me once, shame on you," Madison answered. "And fool my best friend, you're dead freaking meat."

"Madison, that's tender," Pen told her  sarcastically. "But what about a profile picture?"

"Oh, we're not putting one up," Madison answered. "Okay, if the profile is faceless, Jackie will assume it was someone she used to be friends with. Feel guilty she forgot they exist, and accept the friend request."

"Well, Jackie is about to be reunited with one of her old pals," Hanna told them.

Pen looked at Aria. "You do the honors, Tonya. Aria, do you want to know the truth or not?"

Aria shrugged, sighing, sending the friend request.

(Song:) Come and Find Me - Josh Ritter

Lucy and Mara were sitting at their table. Emily and Samara walked over, sitting down.

"Lucy, not to be rude, is there a reason that Mara and Emily brought you along?" Samara asked.

"What?" Lucy asked.

"Look, if you made it this far, you're doing great," Samara told her.

Lucy chuckled nervously, shaking her head. "Oh, no, no. It's not me." She looked at Emily. "You said that this was for Paige."

"Yeah, it is," Emily answered. "Someone I'm starting to date. But it's kinda for you, too."

"Uh, truth be told, Emily's just now accepting who she is," Mara explained. "And Lucy, she..." Lucy sighed, looking down. "She kind of doesn't know who she is. What she wants. Who she likes."

"I get it," Samara told them. "I was confused on who I was or what I wanted for a long time, and I was with a closeted girl. Nothing but drama. I started to realize that if it was meant to be, it shouldn't be this hard. Something tells me she's not coming."

"I'm sorry," Emily told them.

Samara chuckled. "It's okay, I had to be in the neighborhood anyway. I'm setting up a booth at the festival. Me and some friends from art class are selling handmade jewelry."

Samara showed them her bracelet.

"That's cute," Mara told her. "Did you make that?"

"Yeah, thanks," Samara answered. "Hey, if you want to see more, you should come by early, get the first choice."

Mara took Lucy's hand. "And Lucy." Lucy looked at her. "It's okay if you don't know whatever you feel. Sometimes girls aren't for sure of what they want. And it doesn't mean that they're different. Or wrong. Just means that you'll feel whatever you're supposed to feel... with the right one."

Lucy smiled, a little reassured, looking at Samara, pointing at Mara. "Mara should be a counselor for the group or something. She's really good at talks like this."

They laughed.

Festival Tent

Spencer and Peyton were setting up for the festival with Mrs. Ackard standing nearby with Melissa.

"Aw, that's cute," Melissa told her. "Did you come up with that yourself, Mrs. Ackard?"

"Well, if you want people to cough up money, you'd better make 'em smile," Mrs. Ackard told them.

Ian walked closer. "Okay, we're good. That tent's not coming down anytime soon."

"Oh, we feel safe in your hands, Ian," Mrs. Ackard told him. She looked at Melissa and Ian. "Shame on you two for not having a church wedding in Rosewood."

Spencer and Peyton were clearly uncomfortable.

"Well, we plan on making up for it," Ian told them. "Our baby's gonna have the biggest christening this town's ever seen."

Mrs. Ackard smiled. "Oh, good. We need as many joyous events as possible. This town still hasn't recovered since Alison's..." They glanced at Spencer and Peyton. "Oh. Me and my loose lips. I'm sorry."

"No, it's okay, Mrs. Ackard," Melissa told her. "Under the circumstances, Peyton and Spencer are doing really well."

Spencer and Peyton continued on with setting up, bored and uncomfortable out of their minds.

Mrs. Ackard remembered something. "Ian, before I forget, the reverend and I are planning a golf trip, but we can't decide between Pebble Beach, Kaanapali, Hilton Head..."

Peyton turned to face them. "Ooh! Ian knows all about Hilton Head."

"Oh, have you been there?" Mrs. Ackard asked.

"Yeah," Ian answered. "Um, I only played there once, but it was a dream."

Peyton smirked, turning to Spencer.

"And did you stay there too?" Mrs. Ackard asked.

"Yeah," Ian answered. "And make sure you get a room overlooking the ninth hole, right, hon?"

Melissa nodded. "Definitely. The room's got an amazing ocean view."

"Oh, really?" Mrs. Ackard asked. "The brochure says that the golf course and the ocean are on opposite sides of the hotel."

"Oh, no, that's right," Melissa told them. "Um, I was thinking about the view from the hotel restaurant."

Ian walked up to get food from next to Peyton. "What do you think you're doing?"

Peyton didn't answer, glaring at Ian, turning to help Spencer with the setup.

"Oh, Ian, could you help me with this box out to the booth, please?" Mrs. Ackard asked.

"Ah, yes, ma'am," Ian answered. "Of course."

Once Ian and Mrs. Ackard left the room, Peyton turned to face Melissa. "So, did you tell the police that you stayed on opposite sides of the hotel? Or were you even at Hilton Head?"

Melissa didn't answer, walking away. Spencer and Peyton exchanged a look.

Outside

(Song:) Backed Into the Corner - Amy Stroup

At Samara's tent, Emily, Lucy and Mara were looking over the handmade jewelry.

"These are beautiful," Mara told her. "Did you make these?"

Samara nodded. "Not to toot my own horn, but... toot-toot." She held up a pair of earrings to Emily's ear. "Wow. They look amazing with your skin tone. You should have them."

"You don't have to give them to me," Emily told her.

"Okay, steal them," Samara told her. "I'll turn around."

They chuckled.

Paige walked up to them. "Emily? Lucy? Mara?"

"Hi," Lucy told her.

"Hey," Mara told her. "Uh, Paige, this is Samara from Sheridan Prep, who you were supposed to meet at the Grille with us."

Paige looked at Samara awkwardly. "Oh. Hi."

"Hi," Samara told her. "Look, if you ever want to reschedule, grab a coffee, talk about your dad, Emily has my cell. Um, tell your friend how hot she looks in those earrings."

The entire situation became very awkward.

McCoy House - Kitchen

Jean was about to leave for work when there was a knock on the back door. She opened it to reveal Caleb, opening the door.

"Oh, hey, Mrs. McCoy," Caleb told her.

"Dakota's not here," Jean told him. "She's, um... setting up for the festival." Caleb walked in with his bag over his shoulder and a paper bag in his hand. "What's in the bag?"

"Screw driver," Caleb answered. "I accidentally packed it. I didn't want you to think I made off with your stuff."

Caleb put the bag on the table.

"So where are you staying?" Jean asked.

Caleb sighed. "Well, for the next few nights, on a bus, on my way to Arizona."

"Does Dakota know you're leaving?" Jean asked.

"I don't expect her or you to throw me a going away party," Caleb told her.

"All I know is my daughter's sitting in a dark room listening to Elliott Smith on a loop," Jean told him. "I don't know what happened between you two. I told you I didn't want to see my daughter get hurt."

Caleb hesitated, sighing. "I know Dakota's been through a lot, and her life's sucked. But she's lucky to have you, which some people don't get to have even that. Maybe if I had a mom like you, I wouldn't be sleeping on a bus and making up the rules as I go along." He took out a letter, holding it toward Jean. "Can you give this to her?"

Jean shook her head. "You should go to the festival and give it to her yourself. Dakota doesn't need one more guy in her life leaving without saying goodbye."

Festival - Booth

Emily and Paige were talking.

"What did you tell her, about me?" Paige asked.

Emily shrugged. "We mostly talked about Lucy. I told her you were dealing with stuff, you were scared your parents would..."

"I wish you hadn't done that," Paige told her. "If I didn't show up, there was a reason."

Mara, Lucy and Samara walked up to them.

Mara chuckled. "Hey. The second you guys left, everybody suddenly got thirsty."

Lucy handed money to Samara. "Here. For the earrings." She handed the earrings to Emily. "Consider that early Christmas gift. From me." She handed a bracelet to Mara. "And Mara, that's for you."

They chuckled, besides Paige.

"Look, Paige, I hope it didn't seem like I was calling you out," Samara told her. "I get it. We've all been there."

Paige turned to face her in annoyance. "I know you're trying to be nice and everything, but honestly, you don't even know me."

"Paige," Lucy told her.

"What?" Paige asked. "Sorry, Lucy, I'm not looking to join a club and ride down Main Street on a rainbow chopper."

"Actually, I drive a Jeep," Samara told her. "But that's beside the point."

Mara grabbed her coffee. "You know what? I'm gonna take this to go. I might be an older sister, but also a teacher, so... Tell your friends it was really nice to meet them."

"Mara, I'll go with you," Lucy told her.

"Yeah, I will, too," Emily told her.

They started to walk away.

Paige walked after them. "Emily, wait."

Emily turned back. "Why? So you can be rude to Lucy, Mara and me, too? You know what, Paige? This is becoming way too much drama.  I don't want to be your secret."

The Fields sisters walked away.

Montgomery House - Aria's Room

(Song:) What We Want - Bess Rogers

Aria was cleaning her room when she heard her computer chime from an incoming message. She walked over, sitting down on her bed, looking at her laptop to see that Jackie had accepted her friend request. After a moment of hesitation, Aria removed Jackie from her friends list, closing her laptop.

Festival

Hanna, Madison and Dakota were setting up for the festival, while Mona stood nearby, texting on her phone.

"Mona, I thought you were gonna help," Hanna told her.

"I am helping," Mona told them. "I'm making sure Dakota doesn't host a pity party for herself and invite a cheesecake."

Dakota gave her a half-hearted look, smirking.

Mona smiled.

"Where's Pen?" Hanna asked.

"Oh, she and Evan went to get more duct tape," Madison answered, looking around, seeing Caleb approaching. "Uh, don't look now, but sketchy is at 12:00."

Dakota sighed. "I--I cannot deal with him right now. Just don't tell him I'm here."

Dakota walked away. Caleb walked up to Hanna, Madison and Mona.

"We're not open for business yet," Hanna told him.

"I know," Caleb told them. "Dakota's mom said that--"

"She had to step out," Hanna told him.

"Any idea when she'll be back?" Caleb asked.

"Probably when you leave," Madison answered. "You really hurt her, Caleb. After everything she went through, how could you do that to her?"

"You know what?" Hanna asked. "Madison and I should go make sure that she's okay. Come on, Maddy."

Madison and Hanna walked away.

Caleb sighed, taking the letter out of his bag, holding it toward Mona. "Make sure she gets this. Give it to Hanna and Madison to give to Dakota, something. Please."

Mona took the letter from him. Caleb walked away. Mona looked toward the direction that Hanna, Madison and Dakota had gone, but they weren't in sight. She opened the letter, reading it, ripping it up, throwing it in the trash, pouring a slushy into the trash.

Madison and Hanna walked closer with Dakota.

"What did he want?" Dakota asked.

Mona sighed. "Change for a twenty."

Pen walked closer, smiling, holding up the roll of duct tape. "I got the tape. Let's get to work."

They continued to set up.

In the trash can, one piece of the letter said: I love you, Dakota.

Night - Festival

(Song:) Something Inside - The Longcut

After night fall, the festival was in full swing.

Pen and Evan were having fun in the crowd, laughing. Evan picked her up, spinning her around.

Pen laughed happily. "Oh, my God."

Evan put her down, still holding Pen in his arms. "Having fun yet?"

"With the distraction king Evan Montgomery as my date and my boyfriend, how can I not be?" Pen asked teasingly.

Evan and Pen smiled, kissing passionately for a moment, pulling away.

"Come on," Evan told her. "There's still more to do."

"I like the sound of that," Pen told him. "Show me what to do next, master of fun."

Evan chuckled. "Well, get ready, Pen. The night's far from done. And the ride's far from over."

Pen smiled. "I love it when you say things like that."

They walked away to have more fun.

Elsewhere

Peyton was walking alone.

Ian walked up to her. "Hey. We've been looking for you."

"Why?" Peyton asked. "Did the reverend's wife start to see through your act, too?"

Ian stepped closer angrily. "When are you gonna learn to just keep quiet?"

Peyton backed away. "Get away from me."

"You know, every time you try to bring me down, you and Spencer end up in trouble," Ian told her. "And you know what they say about quicksand, Peyton. The more you struggle, the faster you sink. And you're sinking fast."

Ian walked away. Peyton glared after him, rolling her eyes.

Ezra's Apartment

Ezra was reading off movies that Aria picked out. "Okay, 'Runaway Bride', 'Top Secret Affair', all five seasons of 'Big Love'. I sense a theme here. You trying to tell me something?"

"Yeah, I guess am, but after I do,  you have to tell me something," Aria told him.

Ezra walked closer. "Okay."

Aria sighed. "When--when I got here before you, I... I saw a photo on your website page of you... and Jackie. I wasn't looking for it, okay? I was hunting down your menus and the photo popped up, and I couldn't help but notice how happy the two of you were. And, oh, did I mention a ring? Because she was wearing a ring." Ezra put the movies down. "Look, Ezra, I am not coming from some freaky, jealous place, okay? I mean, maybe I was when I picked out 'Big Love', but honestly, I--I just feel like you know everything about me, and I don't feel like you've shared as much. Please jump in at any time."

Ezra nodded, sighing, sitting next to Aria. "I, uh, I met Jackie my freshman year in the dorm. We saw each other on and off for about two years."

Aria nodded. "Good, I need more."

"She was the first really serious girlfriend I ever had," Ezra explained. "I dated other people, but none of them were her. So, when we got back together, I... I proposed. That picture was taken in Florence. I bought the ring on the Ponte Vecchio. My brother had to wire me the money. I didn't even tell him what it was for."

"Why?" Aria asked.

"'Cause I wasn't sure what her answer would be," Ezra answered.

"So, you were married?" Aria asked.

"No," Ezra answered. "No, it never happened."

Aria looked a little relief. "Oh, why did you break it off?"

"I didn't," Ezra answered. "She did."

"Oh, why hasn't she taken down that photo?" Aria asked.

Ezra shook his head. "Oh, I don't know. Guess it was a great summer with lots of memories she wants to hold on to."

"And what about you?" Aria asked.

"Aria, that's her photo, not mine," Ezra told her.

"But if she hadn't given you back that ring, you'd be married to her right now," Aria told him.

Ezra nodded. "Possibly."

"And you've never told me this because..." Aria trailed off.

"I guess I'm one of those people that doesn't put things that didn't work out on my resume," Ezra told her. "What's--what's bothering you more? That old photo being out there, or the fact that you and I can't take a picture like that? Aria, that was then. You're very much now."

They looked at each other for a moment, holding hands.

Festival - Tent

(Song:) Something Inside - The Longcut

Jean walked toward Dakota. "Hey, sweetie, how's it going?"

Dakota nodded. "Good. You're still in uniform, which doesn't surprise me."

"Yeah, I still gotta go to work," Jean told her. "I just dropped in to see how you were doing."

Dakota nodded. "Also doesn't surprise me. Mom, I said I'm fine."

"Yeah, I know what you said," Jean told her. "Also know that sometimes what you say is far from the truth, especially when someone asks you if you're okay." Dakota sighed, but didn't deny that. "Did Caleb come by?"

"Haven't talked to him," Dakota told her.

"He came by the house," Jean told her. "I think he wanted to say goodbye. He's leaving Rosewood."

Dakota frowned. "He is?"

Jean nodded. "Yeah."

Dakota shrugged it off, pretending to be unfazed. "Well... good riddance."

"Don't do that," Jean told her. "Don't pretend like you don't care. I know that you do. And I know that he cares about you, too."

Dakota didn't answer, looking down.

Elsewhere

Evan was getting drinks for him and Pen. They looked at each other from across the way, smiling, waving.

Pen's phone went off. She looked at the text, her smile fading.

Poor Pen. Little Evan being the light in your dark Ali. Never been able to fill in all the pieces. Even when you have them.

Pen looked confused, frowning.

Flashback

Day - DiLaurentis House - Pen's Room

Pen and Alison were sitting on Pen's bed.

Alison took out a small box. "I know it's not your birthday until tomorrow, but I wanted to give you this."

Pen opened the small box, revealing a snow globe on a keychain, smiling. "It's beautiful."

"It's vintage," Alison explained.

"Wasn't this Grandma's?" Pen asked.

"Yeah," Alison answered. "She gave it to me, and me, knowing how much you loved it, I am giving it to you. I wanted you to have it. You're the only one that I don't have to be a bitch around, Pen. The only one that I can just be free. The only one that I can completely be honest with. You know, I wouldn't be able to fill in all the pieces of my little secrets without you. You have a lot of secrets, too, Pen. We always have them. Who knows? You might be the next me."

Pen laughed. "Yeah, I don't think so. I could never be you, Ali."

"No," Alison agreed. "You'll always be Pen. But we're like two pieces to a big game."

"The game of life?" Pen asked sarcastically.

"Mock all you want for now," Alison told her. "But you'll see that you'll always needs your big sister to know everything. If we're two pieces to a set, you're the little like to my dark Ali."

Pen smiled. "Sounds about right."

Now

Night - Festival

Pen was still standing in the festival, taking out her keys, looking at the key chain snow globe, looking around it, but didn't find anything around it. She tapped tightly over the glass and the bottom, finding a latch, opening it, pulling out a key with the number 135 on it, the tag saying 'Raymond Plus Storage'.

Ezra's Apartment

Ezra had fallen asleep watching a movie. Aria woke him up, drawing on paper bags.

"What happened?" Ezra asked.

"Here, put that over your head," Aria told him.

"Are you gonna torture me 'cause I gave somebody else a ring?" Ezra asked. "Aria, seriously, it wasn't even a karat."

"Get in the bag, Mr. Fitz," Aria told him. "We're taking a picture as a couple."

They put the bags over their heads, which had faces drawn on them.

"You know this is nuts, right?" Ezra asked. Aria took a picture of them. "Are we done? I can't breathe."

They both laughed, pulling the bags off, kissing.

Aria pulled away when her phone rang. "Time out."

Aria looked at the text from Pen.

I think I found the key. Call me now.

Aria looked at Ezra. "I have to leave."

"Now?" Ezra asked. Aria stood, grabbing her bag. "Are you coming back?"

Aria picked up her jacket. "Um, I--I don't know, I might. I'll call you. Love you."

"You, too," Ezra told her.

Aria walked out of the apartment, calling. "Hey, Pen, it's me. I'm on my way."

Garrett was standing outside of the apartment.

Festival - Funhouse

Peyton was making her way through the funhouse in boredom, looking around as two hands made their way out of the way on either side of her. When they pulled back, she continued on. "Pen? Evan? Madison? Hanna? Spencer? Dakota? Emily? Lucy? Anybody in here?"

Peyton made her way past a maniacally laughing fake clown, looking at a glow in the dark message on the wall:

Shut up or I'll shut you up

- A

Peyton nervously made her way to the other side of the funhouse, though she wasn't scared. "Spencer, where are you?" She was closed in a tube that led to a hallway, locked inside by a figure in black on the other side. "Hello? Hello?" She knocked on the door to the tube, trying to get out. "Hello? Can somebody please help me? Hey, can somebody hear me?"

---- -----

Outside

Hanna, Madison and Dakota were walking through the festival.

Aria walked up to them. "Hanna. Madison. Dakota, why didn't any of you answer your phones?"

"We left them at the booth," Madison answered.

Pen walked up to them. "You didn't get my test?"

"No," Hanna answered.

"I found the key," Pen told them. "The key that Jenna was looking for. I told Emily and Lucy to meet us at that storage place near Hollis."

"Where're Spencer and Peyton?" Madison asked.

Pen shook her head in confusion. "I couldn't reach them. Hopefully, they're on the way. Come on. Let's go."

Funhouse

Peyton was trying to get the door open. "Somebody please open this! Hello? Please open the door. Hello? Please!"

Ezra's Apartment

Ezra heard a knock on the door, going to answer it.

Garrett was outside. "Mr. Fitz, I'm sorry to disturb you. I'm Garrett Reynolds with the Rosewood police. You got a minute?"

"Sure," Ezra answered. "What can I do for you?"

"May I come in?" Garrett asked.

Ezra nodded. "Yes, please." Garrett walked in. "Excuse the mess. What is this regarding?"

Garrett looked around, seeing the two bags from earlier. "I'd like to talk to you about one of your students."

Funhouse

Peyton was still trying to get out. "Hello? Please!"

Peyton tried to get her phone out of her pocket but the space was too narrow, making her drop the phone.

---- -----

Outside

Hanna, Madison, Aria, Pen and Dakota walked through the festival. Aria was trying to call Spencer or Peyton.

"Why aren't they answering?" Hanna asked.

"I have no idea," Madison told them.

They stopped when they saw a bus nearby.

(Song:) I Don't Want to Leave - Matthew Perryman Jones

Caleb was about to get on the bus.

"Is he going somewhere?" Hanna asked.

Dakota shrugged. "I don't know. Arizona. Who cares?"

"Obviously you do, even though you're trying to convince us you don't," Pen answered.

"Dakota, hey," Madison told her. "Go over there and say something. Go... before he does."

Caleb looked toward them, looking at Dakota.

Dakota wanted to, but she didn't want to go through anything like this ever again. "I can't. Now, come on. Emily and Lucy are waiting for us."

They continued to walk. Caleb walked onto the bus.

Funhouse

Peyton heard the crowbar being removed from jamming the door. "Spencer, is that you?"

Spencer opened the door. "Peyton?"

Peyton sighed in relief. "Thank God it's you."

Spencer pulled Peyton into her arms. "Hey, I've got you. You're fine."

Peyton picked up her phone from the floor. Veronica, Melissa and Ian walked closer.

"Oh, honey, are you okay?" Veronica asked.

"You needed a crowbar to get her out?" Melissa asked.

"It's what was keeping her in," Spencer answered. "Somebody jammed the door with it." She looked at security. "Listen, nobody else comes in here until you figure this out. My sister could have been seriously hurt."

---- -----

Outside

Spencer, Peyton, Melissa, Ian and Veronica walked outside. They saw Toby, and Spencer clearly wanted to go over to him.

Veronica looked at her daughters. "Come on, girls, let's cut through here." Veronica and Melissa stopped walking when they realized that Spencer and Peyton weren't following. "Spencer? Peyton?"

Spencer hesitated, looking at Peyton. Peyton nodded.

Spencer walked right up to Toby, hugging him in front of everyone, pulling away so she could kiss him passionately. Everyone who watched was in shock except for Peyton, who smirked slightly.

Raymond Plus Storage - Locker

Emily and Lucy were already here. Pen, Dakota, Aria, Hanna and Madison met up with them. Pen used the key to unlock the storage unit. They raised the door. Lucy turned on the light.

"Guys, look," Emily told them.

Nothing but a Tweety Bird lunch box on the floor was in the storage unit.

"What is that?" Lucy asked.

Dakota walked toward it, picking it up.

"That's Ali's old lunchbox from when she was a kid," Pen answered.

Dakota  opened it, revealing a flash drive inside.

"What is that?" Hanna asked.

Dakota picked up the flash drive. "I don't know. But we're taking it."

"Dakota, wait," Aria told her.

Dakota put the lunchbox down.

"Wait for what?" Madison asked. "For someone else to take it?"

They walked out, leaving.

McCoy House - Dakota's Room

Spencer, Peyton, Dakota, Aria, Pen, Madison, Hanna, Emily and Lucy were watching the flash drive on Dakota's computer.

"Someone's been spying on us for years," Emily told them.

"And Ali didn't take the video," Madison told them. "She's in it. She's in a lot of them."

"Oh, my God," Peyton told them. "That's July 4th."

"She always said it was Toby peeping on us," Lucy told them.

"No, there's no way that this is Toby," Spencer told them.

"Well, then, who is it?" Dakota asked.

"How about why?" Pen asked. "Why did Alison have these videos?"

"Did the person who took this know she had them?" Hanna asked.

"Is this why she was killed?" Pen asked.

They continued to watch the footage.
