chapter 14 - Careful What U Wish 4
Outfits in the external link
From 1.13 "Know Your Frenemies", in Emily's room, Pam was going through Maya's backpack, finding the joint.
Evan: (voice over) "Previously on Worlds Colliding (Pretty Little Liars)"
From 1.13 "Know Your Frenemies", in Mara's room, Lucy, Mara and Emily were talking to Pam.
"Your friend left her backpack here," Pam told them. "I returned it to her parents." She looked at Emily. "Are you doing drugs with her?"
"What are you talking about?" Emily asked.
Pam reached out to touch Emily's cheek. "Are you stoned?"
Emily sat up to stop her. "No."
From 1.13 "Know Your Frenemies", in the Fields House, Mara and Emily were talking about Maya.
Mara smiled sympathetically, rubbing Emily's arm. "Where are they sending her?"
"Someplace called True North," Emily answered.
From 1.13 "Know Your Frenemies", outside the temporary DiLaurentis House, Pen and Evan were eating together on a bench.
"So, what were you and Noel Kahn talking about today?" Pen asked.
Evan shrugged. "He was just telling me about some stupid rumor he had heard."
"What kind of rumor?" Pen asked.
From 1.13 "Know Your Frenemies", in Ezra's apartment, Aria and Ezra were kissing.
Evan: (voice over from 1.13 Know Your Frenemies) "The English teacher is having a thing with one of his students."
From 1.12 "Salt Meets Wound", in the kitchen of the McCoy House, Dakota took the pasta box, pouring the contents, the money included, over the counter. Jean walked closer in shock.
"Mom, there are thousands of dollars in here," Dakota told her. "This is why those creeps took me. Because Dad stole from them."
From 1.12 "Salt Meets Wound", in the living room of the McCoy House, Dakota walked into her house to see that it was trashed like there had been a break in and robbery, looking around in denial, worried. Dakota ran into the kitchen to see it was even more trashed than the living room was.
Jean was standing at the kitchen island counter. She picked up the pasta box from the cabinet, showing Dakota that it was empty. "It's gone. All of it."
Jean walked out. Dakota sighed anxiously, shakily, overwhelmed. Her phone vibrated. She sighed in anger, already knowing who it would be, taking it out to look at the text.
You might consider this as repayment for saving you for worse things to come. Or you can consider my offer. You'll get your money back and save Daddy from jail. If you do what I say. Sweet dreams.
-- A
From 1.13 "Know Your Frenemies", in the Apple Rose Grille, Dakota found a note taped to the side of the mop bucket, slowly peeling it off to read.
Want the money? Destroy the mess you cleaned. I want you to explode. In front of everyone.
-- A
Dakota sighed, looking down angrily. She did as the note told her to do, exploding, destroying the restaurant, pushing over everything, tables included, while the boys were filming her.
Mara: (voice over from 1.13 Know Your Frenemies) "What happened?"
There was a note under one of the tables Dakota had pushed over. Dakota walked closer to peel it off and read.
Tell them you didn't take your meds.
-- A
Dakota: (voice over from 1.13 Know Your Frenemies) "It's a thing called intermittent explosive disorder. IED."
From 1.13 "Know Your Frenemies", outside the Grille, Mara and Dakota were talking about.
"I know what IED is," Mara told her. "Don't you have medication?"
"Yeah," Dakota answered. "But when my house was broken into a few days ago, my meds were taken. And I don't have enough money to get anymore."
Mara sighed worriedly. "Oh, my God. Who all knows about this?"
"You mean the destruction or my disorder?" Dakota asked. "Because I blew up in front of a restaurant full of people. Some of them the most popular jocks in school, and they were taking videos, so no doubt that they'll be online by the end of the night, and everyone in town will know."
From 1.13 "Know Your Frenemies", in the bathroom of the Grille, Dakota and Mara were talking.
"Listen, if you need help getting your medications after the break in, I can help you," Mara told her.
Dakota shook her head. "Mara, you don't have to do that."
"I don't do anything that I don't have to do," Mara told her. "I do things that I want to do. And I want to do this."
From 1.13 "Know Your Frenemies", in the Hastings House, the girls were all talking.
Dakota's phone rang. She hesitantly pulled it out, looking at the text. "'Don't say I never gave you anything. Turn on your computer. A'."

Day One
Same Night - Same Scene
Night - Hastings House - Living Room
The girls were rewatching the video sent to them by A.
Dakota received an email, opening it to the video of Alison at the kissing rock. "If the girls knew I was seeing you, oh, my God, they'd never shut up about it. I wish they were more mature, but... We don't have a lot of time. I have to get back before they wake up. I know you want to kiss me."
"She doesn't even look scared," Peyton told them.
"Did Alison ever look scared?" Madison asked.
Alison stood, taking the camera, turning it to the person who had been taking the video to reveal Ian.
Ian smiled into the camera, talking to Alison. "Come closer."
The camera fell to the ground, the only thing they could see until they heard Alison gasp and saw her hand fall to the ground in front of the camera, the hand clenching on the dirt before going limp.
"He pushed her, didn't he?" Hanna asked. "All that mumbling and groaning? Maybe she was gripping the ground because she was--"
"Looking for a weapon to defend herself?" Spencer suggested.
"Why are you snapping at her?" Lucy asked. "She's just trying to give your creepy brother an out."
"In-law, okay?" Peyton corrected. "Ian is our creepy brother-in-law."
"Okay, whatever he is, he just married your sister, and he might be a killer," Dakota told them.
"This definitely proves that he was with her the night she died," Emily told them.
"Can we just watch this video one more time and figure out what they're saying?" Aria asked.
"No, please," Pen told them. "I can't watch this again. This might be different for the rest of you because Ali was your friend. But this is my sister we're talking about here."
"Yeah, Pen's right," Madison told them. "Let's just give it a rest."
They backed away from Dakota's computer, sitting down on the couches or chairs.
"Is anybody else freezing?" Emily asked.
"I'll make some hot chocolate," Spencer told them, walking toward the fridge.
"Hot chocolate?" Hanna repeated. "What is this, Camp Tamarack? We can't just sit around signing Kumbaya. We have to hand over that video."
Ian walked in. "What video?"
Dakota stood, standing in front of her laptop so he wouldn't see. "Uh, we're talking about trying to take the video of me going crazy at the Grille offline."
"Oh, yeah, I heard about that from some of the guys on the team," Ian told her. "Said that they were there." Dakota nodded barely. "I'm... really sorry about that. What happened."
Dakota didn't know what to say.
Lucy looked at Ian. "Just a mishap with some IED issues and medications."
Ian nodded, looking at Dakota. "IED. Wow. I'm really... sorry." Dakota nodded, reaching behind her to close the laptop. Ian looked around them. "You're welcome to hang with us in the barn." He walked around the counter, looking at Spencer and Peyton. "Your sister picked some chick flick on demand. Where do we keep the popcorn?"
Peyton pointed. "That drawer."
"Oh, okay," Ian told them, taking out the popcorn. "Oh, Emily, Dakota, by the way, I've been meaning to ask you, you two ready to trade your goggles in for field hockey sticks? Yeah, we could use some speed on offense. Right, Spence, Pey?"
Spencer nodded. "Mm-hmm."
"Thanks, but I'm still into swimming," Emily told him.
Dakota looked at Ian hesitantly. "I guess I can give field hockey a try."
Ian smirked. "Yeah, you should. Great way to work out some anger." Dakota nodded barely. Ian looked between their apprehensive reactions. "What's up? Did I walk into the middle of a chick flick?" The girls didn't answer. "Okay, I get it. No guys allowed."
Ian walked out, leaving.
Aria sighed in relief. "God, that was close. Spencer, Peyton, how can you even sleep here, knowing that he's living in your backyard?"
"We have to give that tape to the police, tonight," Pen told them.
"And when they ask us where we got it?" Madison asked.
Ian walked in. "Forgot the salt."
Dakota put a notebook over her laptop, leaning against the island.
Ian grabbed the salt, turning to look at the girls, walking out, leaving.
The girls turned to watch him go.

Day Two
Morning - Rosewood High School - Recreation Room
(Song:) Your Kind of Girl - Jules Larson
Emily, Lucy and Madison were hanging signs for the Dance-A-Thon tomorrow night.
Dakota was on Hanna's laptop, looking at the video online on YouTube, seeing that it had literally gone viral.
"Okay, does this look even?" Lucy asked. "Earth to Dakota."
Dakota looked up. "Sorry, what?" Lucy pointed at the sign that they were hanging. "Oh, uh, yeah, it's fine."
"Okay, Hanna and I are chairs of the decorating committee, and I demand you to get off Hanna's laptop and stop torturing yourself with that video and help us decorate," Madison told her.
A group of jocks, including Sean, Evan and Noel, walked past. Sean and Evan were splitting up from the group when the others were looking at Dakota and whispering and snickering.
Dakota sighed, closing Hanna's laptop.
Sean looked at Hanna. "The printer guy needs to be paid. Did you order six Baracks and no Michelles?"
"Are you kidding?" Hanna asked. "Tell him no Michelles, no money."
The boys were still snickering at Dakota.
Pen was annoyed, turning to look at Evan for help. "Evan?"
Evan nodded, turning to the boys. "All right, let's go. All of you, now, go."
Evan and the boys walked away, leaving.
Emily and Lucy looked at Dakota sympathetically.
"Can I just trash this place, too?" Dakota asked.
"No, you can't," Aria answered. "This is all for tomorrow night."
"And if you trash this place, I'm gonna break your leg this time," Madison told her.
Dakota poked out her tongue.
They smiled.
Spencer and Peyton walked in.
"Hey, are we still doing this at lunch?" Spencer asked.
"If by 'this', you mean taking Dakota's laptop to the police, then yes, we are," Emily told them.
"But no one called over there, right?" Peyton asked. "They don't know that we're coming?"
"What's with the cold feet?" Pen asked.
"It's just... we were up all night thinking," Spencer told them. "What if this is a setup? A could've planted this video on Dakota's laptop, knowing that we would turn it in."
"Guys, let's no try to second guess A," Lucy told them. "We've been there. We ended up scared of an old con who turned out to be a bully looking for a better grade."
"Yeah, let's not forget A also tried to kill Madison for knowing too much," Hanna told them. "We could be walking into a trip."
Aria gestured to Spencer and Peyton. "They're already living in it."
Peyton shook her head. "No. Ian... might have done other stuff, but he's not A. There's no way he'd want us knowing this video even exists."
"But it does, and the police need to know what happened to Alison that night," Pen told them.
"Toby gave Alison his sweater before she saw Ian, and Toby shouldn't go to jail for a crime he didn't commit," Emily told them.
"They're right," Dakota told them.
Aria looked at Dakota. "I'll drive you to the station during lunch."
Dakota nodded in agreement.

Elsewhere
Sean and Hanna were talking.
"Hey, how did dealing with the delivery guy go?" Sean asked.
"Not well," Hanna answered. "You know, I should call the shop and get him fired. How much do you think he makes an hour?"
"What you should do is have him sponsor you for the dance," Sean told her. "Ask the manager to pony up a couple hundred bucks. How much have you raised?"
"Some, not a lot," Hanna answered.
"Your mom's gonna throw down, though, right?" Sean asked.
"Of course," Hanna answered with a smile.
"Have her pass that at work," Sean told her. "That's what my mom did."
Hanna turned to him. "Hey, do you think your mom would hire me again at the dental office?"
"Oh, I wouldn't go there," Sean told her.
"Why not?" Hanna asked.
"Hanna, you threatened a kid with a drill bit," Sean answered.
"He aimed at me for rinse and spit," Hanna told him defensively.
"Look, if you don't have enough pledges, you can split some of my sponsorship money," Sean told her.
"No, no, it's not that," Hanna told him. "It's just I'm saving up for some earrings. They're crazy expensive. So can you just ask her? Please? It'd be a huge plus that I get to spend more time with you."
Sean smiled. "Sure."

Elsewhere
Aria and Evan were wiping down tabletops.
Ella walked up with a woman. "Surprise."
"Simone?" Evan asked. Simone and Aria smiled, hugging tightly. "What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to surprise you," Simone answered.
"She's in town visiting her parents, so I hijacked her," Ella explained.
"Mom, we don't need a babysitter anymore," Evan told her.
Simone laughed.
"No, but my first period English class does," Ella told them.
"Your mom invited me to speak to her classes," Simone explained. "You know, try to convince them that there's life after Rosewood."
"There is?" Evan asked sarcastically.
Aria and Simone smiled.
"And it's actually a very impressive life," Ella told them. She looked at Simone teasingly. "Guess who is now a published author?"
"What?" Aria asked. "That's fantastic."
"Okay, okay, slow down," Simone told them. "Two short stories and an online journal, and your mom thinks I'm J.K. Rowling."
"Mom, why didn't you tell us Simone was coming?" Evan asked.
"Well, because some of us can keep a secret," Ella answered.
"It's so weird to be back in this building," Simone told them. "I came in and went right into auto-pilot, walked straight to my old locker."
"Oh, don't tell me you miss it," Evan told her.
"I do," Simone told them. "It's twice the size of my apartment in New York."
Aria laughed. "Well, I mean, do you have to leave after our mom's class? You should come to mine, too. Hanna, Spencer, Emily, Dakota... we're all in the same English class."
"Yeah, and then after their class, Madison, Pen, Lucy, Peyton and I are in the English class after that," Evan told them.
Ella looked across the room toward where Ezra was talking to a student. "Oh, why didn't I think of that? That's a great idea. I'll be right back."
Ella walked away toward Ezra to talk to him.
Simone looked at Aria. "Your mom tells me that you kept quite an intense journal while you were away."
"Yeah, well, I had to do something," Aria told her. "It was Iceland."
"The sun went down in October, and it came back up in March," Evan told her.
Simone smiled. "Don't diss it. There might be a really good story in there somewhere."
Aria shook her head. "No. No, I doubt it."
"And when you win that Pulitzer, you better thank me," Simone told them. "I made you turn off 'The O.C.' and read Wuthering Heights."
"It wasn't Wuthering Heights," Evan told her. "It was The Exorcist."
Ella walked closer.
"Okay, volume," Simone told them. "Mother on campus."
"Okay, so we're all set," Ella told them. "Mr. Fitz is in, and, Simone, you are booked till lunch." Simone nodded. "If you have time for a cup of coffee while you're in town, I think he would really like to pick your brain." Evan frowned. Simone looked interested, and Aria looked antsy. "Say yes. He's very single and very handsome. Am I wrong?"
Aria shrugged, looking worried.

Outside
Emily was standing on the school steps outside, on the phone. "Yes, I heard what you said, but can I at least--Can I at least say hello to her? Hello? Hello?"
Emily hung up, walking over to Lucy, Mara and Dakota.
"Was that Mom?" Lucy asked.
"No, Maya's prison guard at True North," Emily answered.
"How's she holding up?" Lucy asked.
"Wouldn't know," Emily told them. "They won't let me talk to her."
Mara turned to Dakota, taking out a medication bottle, holding it toward her. "Hey, just as I promised."
"You got her her meds?" Lucy asked.
"We went half-and-half," Mara answered. "Dakota didn't have the full payment, and now that she lost her main job, she needs help."
"Thank you so much, Mara," Dakota told her. "I don't know how to thank you."
Mara nodded teasingly. "I hear that a lot."
"She really does," Emily told her. She looked at Dakota. "You said that your grandparents sent your dad to True North when he was our age."
Dakota nodded. "Yeah. Obviously that didn't go over well."
"What do they have people doing over there in those woods?" Lucy asked. "Build a log cabin?"
Dakota shrugged. "All my dad said was 'building character, which is half the reason I am the way I am now, to get back at my parents for sending me there in the first place'. But that was just my dad, Em, and we all know how my dad was."
"Yeah, well, they've taken Maya's phone away and reprogrammed it so only her parents can call," Emily told them. "No texts, no emails, no nothing."
Mara sighed. "I'm sorry, Em. I gotta head inside."
The girls nodded in understanding.
Mara walked inside.
Dakota looked past Emily and Lucy to see a new boy talking to another guy, looking at Emily. "Give me your phone."
"What?" Lucy asked.
"Give it to me, Em," Dakota told her. "You'll get it back, and then you can call Maya 24/7."
Dakota looked past them toward the new kid and the other boy.
The other boy walked away, leaving.
Lucy looked at Dakota. "What are you looking at?"
"Not what, who," Dakota told them.
"That new kid?" Emily asked, shaking her head. "I don't wanna go there. I heard he's sketchy."
"He's not sketchy," Dakota told them. "I gave him 20 bucks, and he totally upgraded my phone. More memory, more apps. He'll hook you up."
"What's his name?" Lucy asked.
"Caleb," Dakota answered. "Caleb Rivers. We can talk to him later, all right?"
Emily and Lucy nodded.
---- -----
Courtyard
Pen and Evan walked into the courtyard.
"I wouldn't even recognize her," Pen told him. "When's the last time you saw Simone? Huh?"
"Oh, I don't know," Evan told her. "It's been a while. But she's doing pretty well, because she's willing to sponsor all of us at the dance-a-thon."
Pen smiled. "Nice."
"All right, I gotta go head to practice, but I'll see you later, okay?" Evan asked.
"Definitely," Pen answered. "Oh, and, I hope football's not the only sport that you're used to, because tomorrow night, dancing could be considered a sport."
Evan chuckled. "Yeah, so I heard."
Pen and Evan kissed slowly and sweetly for a moment, pulling away, smiling.
"I'll see you later," Pen told him.
Evan smiled, nodding, walking inside.
Pen walked over to a table, where Dakota, Spencer, Hanna, Aria and Emily were sitting down, and Lucy, Madison and Peyton were standing around them.
Dakota was on Hanna's laptop again.
"Tell me again why you're not using your own laptop to look up Help Wanted ads," Hanna told her.
"Because my laptop needs to be juiced enough so we can take it to the station," Dakota answered. "Yours, on the other hand, can die for all I care."
Madison laughed. "Wow. Thanks. Makes sense."
Spencer looked around at the staring faces, turning to Dakota. "How can you stand all the attention right now?"
"She is ignoring it the best she can," Aria answered. "Just like she can ignore us when she's looking for jobs online."
Dakota looked up. "Huh?"
Peyton looked at Aria. "Your point is easily made and proven."
The girls smiled. Dakota gave them a sarcastic look.
"Come on, Kota," Emily told her. "You can look at the 'Help Wanted' on the way over. I hear Rosewood PD is hiring."
"Well, Dakota does have experience with them," Pen told them. She looked at Dakota teasingly. "Just the wrong kind."
"Okay, come on, we have to go," Lucy told them. "We only have 45 minutes."
Dakota lowered the browser to see a message on the home screen.
"Wait, hold on," Hanna told her. "What's this?"
"What are we looking at?" Spencer asked.
Dakota frowned. "How come it shows my music library's online when my laptop's in my bag?"
Dakota pulled up her bag next to them, opening it, taking out a yearbook.
"Why are you carrying a yearbook?" Aria asked.
"Where's your laptop?" Emily asked.
"It was in my bag, and now it's not," Dakota told them. "This is insane. This bag has been plastered to my side all morning."
"What about PE?" Peyton asked.
"It was in my gym locker," Dakota answered. "But no one else has that combo."
"The coaches do," Pen told them. "Ian must've heard us last night."
"Well, if he did, then he knows what's on there," Lucy told them.
"If he has Dakota's laptop, he knows we've seen what's on there, too," Madison told them.
Dakota closed her eyes in frustration, holding her head.

Day Three
Morning - Street
Caleb was leaving a store, getting his bike.
Emily was walking down the sidewalk with a dress in a bag over her shoulder, walking toward him. "Caleb, wait up. Didn't you see me wave at you?"
"I saw you," Caleb answered. "You need something?"
"My phone," Emily answered. "Is it done?" Caleb looked around. "Did you crack the code or not?"
"Hey, let's do this Monday," Caleb told her.
"You said it would be ready today," Emily told him.
"I said I would make it happen," Caleb told her. "I don't give dates, all right? You want a speedy delivery, call Best Buy."
"What if I give you 40 more bucks?" Emily asked. "Would that make it happen any faster?"
"Let me put it this way," Caleb told her. "Yes." Emily started to reach into her back. Caleb held up a hand to stop her. "Yo, not here. Walk with me." They walked down the sidewalk with Caleb's bike. "So what's the rush?"
"I wanna speak to my friend tonight," Emily answered.
"Where is she, rehab?" Caleb asked.
"It's not rehab," Emily told him. "It's more like... who told you it was rehab?"
"Nice cushy town like this?" Caleb asked. "I'm guessing rehab is the new boarding school."
"Well, it's not," Emily told him. "She's not a pothead. She shouldn't even be there." Caleb smirked, looking away, which only made Emily get defensive. "Where did you move here from?"
"Why do you care?" Caleb asked.
"Why can't you tell me?" Emily replied.
"I didn't say I couldn't," Caleb told her. "It just might cost you an extra 40 bucks." Emily sighed in frustration. "All right, fine. I'll give you a discount. You can hear my whole life story for a chili cheese dog."
"You don't have time to eat," Emily told him. "You have a deadline."
"I chew fast," Caleb told her, smirking.
Emily ignored him, walking away.

Clothing Store
(Song:) Come to Nothing - Car Stereo Wars
Dakota was walking in a clothing store, talking with the manager. "Susan, I know your inventory back and forth. If you could just give me one shot..."
Susan turned to face Dakota. "Look, I think you're terrific, Dakota. If it were up to me, I'd love to hire you, but my boss would kill me."
Dakota sighed. "You guys saw the video."
"We saw the video," Susan answered. "I'm sorry. But the answer's no."

Town Square
Dakota walked along town square, sighing, sitting down on the bench to think. Her phone vibrated. She took it out to see the text.
Frustrated that you can't make enough to get by? You might not know where Daddy is, but I do. And this latest scandal might lock him away for god. Wanna keep him out of prison? I've got a job for you.
-- A
Dakota was trying very hard not to get angry, frustrated and desperate.

Ezra's Apartment
Ezra was sitting on a chair, reading. There was a knock on the door. Ezra stood, walking over to the door to open it, revealing Aria behind it with coffee.
"Is this a bad time?" Aria asked.
"No, no," Ezra answered, letting Aria inside. "I just, uh..."
"I know, I know," Aria told him. "It was impulsive. I should've called. I know that's our deal, but I just figured it's a Saturday morning, you got a stack of papers to grade, and we're not really gonna get a chance to talk tonight at the dance."
"I wasn't working," Ezra told her. "I was actually reading one of Simone's short stories."
"Oh, how is it?" Aria asked.
"It's really good," Ezra answered, chuckling. "She's talented." Aria was clearly nervous. "I figure I should read one before I meet with her, for coffee."
"So you're meeting with her now?" Aria asked.
"At noon," Ezra answered. He looked at the time. "Crap. It's 11:30 already."
Aria looked disappointed, nervous that Ezra could bond more with Simone than with her. "You didn't mention you were doing this."
Ezra sat down to pull on his shoes. "Well, your mother was pretty persistent, and I couldn't exactly tell her I was seeing someone."
"Oh, of course," Aria told him.
"You're okay with this, right?" Ezra asked.
Aria's voice raised slightly higher as a sign that she wasn't. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be? I mean, you should be seen out in public with someone closer to your own age."
"It's just coffee, all right?" Ezra asked.
"No, I know," Aria told him. "So, should I just stay here, wait for you till you get back? I could just read or clean out your refrigerator."
"There's nothing in it," Ezra told her, standing. He took a bag of food from Aria, smiling. "Well, there's this." Aria managed a small smile. Ezra leaned closer to kiss her for a moment, pulling her away, placing the bag on the table, leading her toward the door. "Oh, uh, you should probably go first. And I'll count to 50."
Aria nodded awkwardly. Ezra opened the door. Aria walked out of the apartment, looking hurt despite herself.

Hastings House - Kitchen
Ian was standing at the counter, cutting up sandwiches.
Peyton and Spencer walked downstairs.
"Hey there," Ian told them.
"Hey," Peyton told him.
"You haven't seen Dakota's laptop anywhere, have you?" Spencer asked. "She left it here by accident, but we haven't been able to find it."
"You had it the other night," Ian told them. "Weren't you and your pals looking at it?"
"Yeah," Peyton answered. "But Dakota thought she brought it with her to school."
Peyton and Spencer walked closer, looking at Ian's laptop bag on the counter.
"She didn't leave it anywhere else?" Ian asked.
"Uh, we've been looking, but Dakota's been a little out of it ever since the Grille, and the video," Spencer told him.
"Well, I haven't seen it," Ian told them. "She probably misplaced it somewhere else." He showed them the sandwiches. "Hey, listen, do you want any of this? We're gonna need plenty of energy for tonight."
"We?" Peyton repeated. "You're going to the dance? Why?"
"Well, they asked me to chaperone," Ian answered. "Yeah, it was either that or spending a night in Philly with Melissa and her business school friends. Yeah, school dance felt less painful."
"And Melissa is okay with that?" Peyton asked.
"Well, yeah, she knows it's not my scene," Ian told them. "I'm more comfortable here. Or at least I used to be."
"Why?" Spencer asked. "What's changed?"
"Well, you know how it is," Ian told them. "Small town, people gossip. They think they know you, but they don't."
"Who exactly are we talking about here?" Spencer asked.
"Listen, girls, what do you say we put the past behind us?" Ian asked. "We're living under the same roof now. Let's try and be a family."
Ian grabbed his laptop bag and a sandwich, starting to walk away.
Spencer and Peyton looked at each other worriedly.

Night - Rosewood High School - Hallway
(Song:) Love the Nite Away - DJ Kaos
Everyone was going through a line to get into the dance-a-thon, where chaperones, including Mara and Ian, were placing numbers on the couples' backs for their sponsors and so on.
Dakota, Hanna and Madison were in line.
Madison looked at Dakota. "You sure you wanna check your purse?"
"Yeah, why not?" Dakota asked.
"It's sloshing," Madison answered. "What do you have in there anyway?"
"Nothing," Dakota told them, pulling out a flask from her bag. "I just brought a little beverage in case the punch bowl has no punch."
Hanna chuckled. "You brought a flask? Jeez, Dakota."
Dakota put the flask away. "I need something to get me through the night if people are gonna be staring or making fun of me the entire time."
"At least fold your People Magazine around it," Hanna told her.
Dakota nodded barely.
Lucy walked up behind Dakota, looking at her in concern. "You sure you wanted to come tonight?"
"Had to make them see that them and A don't have a hold over me," Dakota told them. "At least, not anymore."
"Dakota, don't test A," Lucy told her. "Don't provoke whoever it is."
Dakota nodded. "I know that."
Ian walked toward Mara. "Excuse me. Mara, how are you?"
Mara smiled, walking into the dance.

Pen walked through the hallway, seeing Ian in his office, zipping up his laptop bag. She watched him lock the laptop bag in his desk and put the keys in his jacket. She walked away before Ian could see her.
Ian turned off his desk lamp, getting ready to leave.

Mara was walking around the party, smiling, shaking hands.
The girls were talking about what Pen saw in Ian's office.
"You sure Dakota's laptop is in that bag?" Lucy asked.
"Well, there's only one way to find out," Pen told them.
"Why would he bring it to school when he knows that we're all gonna be here?" Hanna asked.
Emily looked at Spencer and Peyton. "Maybe he thought you'd bail out early, go home and snoop through his things?"
"Why don't you?" Madison asked.
"Already did," Peyton answered. "We need the bag."
"Great," Dakota told them sarcastically. "Any brilliant ideas on how to get it?"
"No," Spencer answered.
"Me either," Aria told them.
Mara spoke through a mic to everyone. "I know you're all eager to get started, but first the rules, all right? Number one, there's no stopping during the dances. Your chaperones will be walking around, making sure you're all still moving."
Aria looked at the girls. "What if he already erased the video?"
"Well, then we know for sure he's hiding something, and we go to the police," Spencer answered.
"With a non-video?" Madison asked skeptically. "You think they're gonna take our word for it?"
"Look, we saw what we saw," Lucy told them.
"Something went down between him and Alison, and he buried her in the yard to shut her up," Peyton told them.
"If he's the one that killed my sister, I'm not gonna let him get away with it," Pen told them. "I'm gonna take him down. But I can't do it without your help."
The girls looked at each other worriedly.
Mara smiled as she spoke through the mic to everyone. "Now let's get this party started."

Ella was surprised when she saw that Byron showed up. "Oh, hey. I thought you had a faculty dinner."
"Yeah, I did," Byron told her. "It wrapped up early. So I thought I'd stop by and lend a hand. It's not like we need to be avoiding each other, right?"
"Of course not," Ella answered.
"All right then, where do you want me, boss?" Byron asked.
Ella checked her snack table. "Uh, how about the snack table?"
"Sold," Byron told her. "Listen, I've been a little out of the loop this week. What exactly is a dance-a-thon?"
"Well, you're sponsoring Aria, right?" Ella asked.
"And Evan, yeah," Byron answered. "Ten dollars a dance."
"So if they make it through 20 dances, you need to pony up 400 dollars toward their class trip to DC," Ella explained.
A woman called off screen. "Ella, we need you."
Ella pointed behind Byron. "Snack table's that way. To be continued."
Ella walked away.

Aria was putting a request down for a song.
Simone walked up to Aria. "Please tell me you did not request the Backstreet Boys."
Aria looked at her in surprise. "Simone." Simone smiled. "What are you doing here?"
"Do you not want me here?" Simone asked.
"No, I mean, yes, of course I do," Aria told her. "Here you are. How awesome is that?"
Mara saw them, walking closer. "Simone. Oh, my God."
Simone smiled. "Mara, hey." Simone and Mara hugged, pulling away. "I didn't know you would be here."
"I'm chaperoning," Mara told her. "I didn't know you were in town."
"Yeah, just for a little while," Simone told her. "Ella Montgomery set me up with a lunch date with Ezra Fitz today, and he mentioned that he was on the chaperone shift, too, so I decided to stop by and see if you would be here, too."
"Oh, so you and Fitz had a nice time?" Mara asked.
Simone smiled. "He's terrific." She looked at Aria. "You're lucky. They did not have English teachers like that when I was here."
Aria smiled nervously, gesturing to Mara. "I bet they didn't have guidance counselors like Mara here, either."
Simone looked at Mara, smiling. "You actually became a counselor. That is so awesome."
Mara smiled. "And a little subbing on the side. Nothing much."
"That's a lie," Aria told her. "You've been a big help to me and my friends. Especially Dakota here recently."
Mara smiled.
Simone sighed. "Don't you ever miss the red streaks in your hair?"
Mara laughed.

Outside
(Song:) Fire Eyes - Canyons
Dakota was standing outside, looking at the text on her phone.
Job description: Heartbreaker. $500 for each dance you can get with a boy. That's if they're not all too busy laughing at you.
-- A
Dakota sighed, looking down.
Emily and Lucy walked toward Dakota.
"Hey," Lucy told her. "Who are you texting?"
Dakota put her phone away. "Uh, my mom. Just telling me where she's gonna leave the keys, since she's working, and I'll be home before she will." Caleb walked toward them. Dakota was eager for the change in subject. "Hey. Do you have it?" Caleb nodded. "Where is it?"
Emily outright held money toward Caleb. Caleb pushed down her hand to be discreet.
"Wait," Lucy told him. "How much did you charge her?"
"It was a rush job," Caleb told them. "If you gave it away for free, nobody would want it." He took the money from Emily, putting it away, handing her her phone. "I threw in some extra ringtones, on the house."
Emily and Lucy walked away, leaving.
Dakota looked at Caleb. "Well, you should, considering you charged her three times the normal amount."
"Ever heard of supply and demand?" Caleb asked. "You know, I figured that you'd probably be the only one out of your group that would understand the kind of thing I gotta go through just to get a little cash."
Dakota chuckled without humor. "Oh, and what is that supposed to mean?"
Caleb smirked. "The first time we met, at The Brew, you were working, and you dropped your phone. I picked it up and noticed that it was a way less better version of a phone than it should have been, since the kind of girl that it belonged to in the kind of girl clique she was in, before I upgraded it for a simple amount of 20 dollars."
"You don't know the first thing about me," Dakota told him.
"No?" Caleb asked. "Then you weren't working two jobs before that video hit the Net?" Dakota didn't answer, looking away in annoyance. Caleb stepped closer. "I may always be working an angle, but you're always working, period. Go ahead. Tell me that I'm wrong."
Dakota looked at him, shaking her head. "No. You're not wrong."
Dakota looked at him curiously.
"What?" Caleb asked.
"You're officially the first one outside of my 'kind of girl clique' that hasn't treated me like a freak after that video got posted," Dakota answered.
Caleb chuckled. "I don't care about the video. I don't even care why it happened. A lot of bad happens that the only thing that can help or make it better is exploding like that."
Dakota looked down, chuckling. "Wow. Deep." Caleb walked toward the door. Dakota turned after him. "Hey, Caleb. Do you... wanna dance? Just one dance."
Caleb stopped, surprised.
Dakota sighed, nervous.

Emily was outside, calling Maya. "Should I call you tomorrow? Sure. Maybe Monday? No, no, I understand." Lucy walked outside, seeing Emily. "Okay. I miss you. Bye."
Emily hung up.
Lucy walked toward Emily. "Hey, was that Maya?" Emily nodded. "How is she?"
Emily took a deep breath. "Amazing. She seems really... happy."
"So why don't you?" Lucy asked.
"Me?" Emily asked. "No, I'm--I'm good. It's all good."
"I'm not sensing good here, Em," Lucy told her. "What's wrong? What happened?"
"It's just weird," Emily told her. "It was like she was there, but she wasn't."
Lucy wrapped her arm around Emily in concern. "Oh, Emmy. She's in wilderness boot camp. You know, she's been talking to bears. And besides, I bet her counselor was probably watching her the whole time."
"No, she was alone," Emily told her. "Maybe she's moved on."
Emily was so upset she walked away.
Lucy watched her go in concerned sympathy.

Simone and Ezra were talking.
"What made you choose Prague?" Simone asked.
"I figured if you're gonna spend a semester abroad, you might as well do it where they sell absinthe," Ezra answered.
Aria saw them talking, looking nervous and hurt.
"Ever been to one of those crazy marionette shows they have over there?" Simone asked.
"Oh, yeah, yeah," Ezra answered. "Why do you think they sell absinthe?"
Aria walked closer.
Simone and Ezra saw her. "Hey."
Ezra stood. "Uh, do you need your jacket?"
"You're not punking out on the marathon already, are you?" Simone asked. She looked at Ezra. "Oh, talk about somebody who loves their puppets." She looked at Aria. "Remember that huge Cookie Monster you had on your bed? You slept with him every night."
Aria smiled in embarrassment, shaking her head. "Uh, no, don't really remember."
"How could you forget?" Simone asked. "He had to be peeled off of you in the morning. You slept with him in between your legs."
"Actually, it was my ankles," Aria told them. "Can I get coat 62? My dad left something in his pocket." Ezra nodded, grabbing coat 62, Ian's jacket, handing it to Aria. Aria reached into the pocket to grab the keys. "Thanks."
"Mm-hmm," Ezra told her, taking the jacket back to put it up.
Aria walked toward Peyton, handing her the keys.
Peyton walked out of the dance.
Dakota had managed to convince Caleb to dance with her, looking around apprehensively for someone who would be watching them so she could try to find out who A was, but a lot of people were laughing and looking while they danced or stood at the sidelines.

Dakota looked around at the people staring at her. "What are you looking at? Dance." Caleb chuckled, turning to leave. Dakota grabbed his arm to stop him. "Wait. Just one more dance."

The song that came on was a slow ballad. Dakota and Caleb started to dance.
Caleb sighed, smirking, mimicking her. "'Hey, Caleb, do you wanna dance? Just one dance'. It's been five. I can take a hint, Dakota. You're nervous that after what happened, no one but me will dance with you."
"I'm not looking for a pity taker," Dakota told him.
"Then what are you looking for?" Caleb asked.
Dakota didn't answer, sighing. Dakota and Caleb caught themselves looking at each other, looking away.

Elsewhere
Evan and Aria were talking at the side of the dance.
"Hey, why aren't you dancing with Pen?" Aria asked.
"Bathroom break," Evan answered.
"Evan, do you know how long Simone plans on staying here?" Aria asked.
"No, I don't know," Evan answered. "She seems to keep flirting with Mr. Fitz, though."
Aria rolled her eyes. "Well, I think she's making a fool of herself."
"Why?" Evan asked. "You jealous?"
Aria looked worried that he caught her. "What? Why would you say that?"
"Well, she's our old babysitter, and she's your friend, and she's spending more time with Mr. Fitz than you," Evan answered.
Aria sighed in relief that that was what he meant. "Right. Right, yeah. I know I should cut her some slack. You know, it's hard to meet nice guys. Sometimes you gotta strike while the iron's hot."
Evan groaned teasingly in disgust. "Okay, too much information."
Aria smiled, laughing. "No, I'm serious. You're a nice guy. And I'm happy that you get to be happy."
"Mushy much?" Evan asked.
They smiled.
Pen walked up to them, wrapping her arms around Evan from behind. "Well, lucky for me, I got the nice guy." She whispered in his ear teasingly. "And the nice guy said that he would dance with me..."
Evan chuckled, taking Pen's arm from around his shoulders, spinning her around him onto the dance floor so they could dance to the slow song.
Aria smiled as she watched them.
Hanna and Sean were dancing in the crowd too.

Pen and Evan were dancing.
"Well, four hours down, two to go," Evan told her.
"Who asked to play this song?" Pen asked.
"I think Aria did," Evan answered. "It was our parents' song."
Pen nodded in understanding, teasing him. "You're not getting tired yet, are you?"
"Not even close," Evan answered. "Football player, remember?"
"Yeah, and I told you that dancing is another sport," Pen told him.
Evan laughed. "Yeah, you did."
"And was I right?" Pen asked.
"Well, you always think that you're right," Evan told her. "But in this case, yes, you definitely are."
They laughed softly.
"After this, what do you say that we go get pizza?" Pen asked.
"Pizza?" Evan repeated in amusement. "You rarely eat pizza, because 'it comes with a lot of toppings'."
"Yeah, but I am really hungry after all this dancing," Pen told him.

Everyone was dancing to the more upbeat song.
Aria, Peyton, Spencer, Lucy, and Madison were dancing.
"So then I couldn't get into the drawer," Peyton told them. "None of the keys worked."
Aria was watching Ezra and Simone laugh and dance.
"Aria?" Lucy asked.
"That is it," Aria told them. "I will kick her back to New York if I have to."
Madison stopped Aria from walking over there. "Wait, Aria, stop, before you do something you regret."
"Madison, let go of me," Aria told her.
Simone looked at Ezra. "I'd be happy to pass your stuff along."
"Really?" Ezra asked.
"Mm-hmm, sure," Simone answered. "My editor is coming over for a drink next weekend. You should join us."
Lucy looked at Aria. "There are teachers and parents here. Your parents."
"I don't care," Aria told them, pushing past the girls toward Ezra and Simone.
Spencer, Peyton, Lucy, and Madison followed.
Simone looked at Ezra. "It's just a train ride away and a 15 minute walk from Penn Station."
Aria looked at Ezra. "We need to talk."
"What's going on?" Ezra asked.
Spencer stepped in to save Aria. "Mr. Fitz, will you dance with me?"
"What?" Ezra asked.
"We're allowed," Spencer told him, pulling Ezra aside to dance with her. "Come on."
Madison, Lucy and Peyton were stunned.
Simone looked at Aria, Madison, Lucy and Peyton. "Wow. Someone's crushing on her English teacher."
The girls managed nervous smiles back.

Emily was sitting outside, drinking from Dakota's flask.
Dakota walked outside, sitting down next to Emily. "My feet hurt. My brain hurts. Everything hurts. Scoot over." Emily slid over. Dakota looked at the flask. "Hey, where'd you get that?" She took it from Emily. "This is mine."
"I helped myself," Emily told her.
Dakota turned the flask over to see it was empty. "To all of it?"
"Why are you dancing with Caleb?" Emily asked.
"What do you mean?" Dakota asked.
"I mean, you barely know the guy, and you've been dancing the night away," Emily answered. "I didn't know that you liked him."
Dakota sighed. "I... Like you said, I don't really know him. So I don't know if I like him."
"So you're just desperate for a dance partner, huh?" Emily asked. "Worried that he'll be the only one willing to?"
Dakota forced a small smile. "How else will I be able to get my sponsor to pony up the needed money to get to go on the school trip to DC?"
"You're using him," Emily told her. "Alison used to do the same thing. To everyone. It makes you feel powerful, doesn't it?"
"No," Dakota answered. "Just the opposite."
Emily stood. "Maybe after what happened to you, powerful is what you need to feel. Too bad Alison isn't here. She would've been really proud of you."
Emily walked away.
Dakota stood. "Emily."
Dakota sighed, following her.

(Song:) Your Love - Fay Wolf
Spencer walked toward Aria, Madison, Lucy and Peyton.
"What the hell was that about?" Aria asked.
"Saving your relationship," Spencer answered. "Five more seconds, and you would've ended up on YouTube right next to Dakota."
"That was a suicide mission, and you know it," Madison told her.
They watched as Pen and Evan / Hanna and Sean danced, looking behind them to see that Emily was pulling at the dance decorations drunkenly.
"What is going on with Emily?" Peyton asked.
Dakota walked up to Emily, pulling her away from the decorations. "Emily. Em. Whoa, okay. Come on. Hey, sit down."
Dakota led Emily over to a seat, having her sit down.
Lucy walked closer. "Okay, I'm gonna go get you some water. Caffeinated water."
"I'm not thirsty," Emily told them. Lucy sat next to Emily. Emily looked toward Ian on the dance floor, where he was talking to Mara. "He shouldn't be here. He's not a chaperone. He's a killer."
"Emily," Lucy told her.
"Why is Toby at home, wearing a LoJack, while this freak can go anywhere he wants, do whatever he wants?" Emily asked, standing.
Lucy and Dakota stood.
"Emily," Lucy told her. "Okay, Emily, come with me. Come on."
Lucy tried to pull Emily toward the door.
Emily walked toward Ian and Mara, past the other girls on her way to them, looking at Ian. "I know what you did." The girls followed her. "We all know. And you're not gonna get away with it."
Lucy tried to pull Emily away.
"Emily," Pen told her.
The girls pulled Emily away. Pen and Lucy were still standing with Ian and Mara.
Mara looked confused and concerned. "What was she talking about?"
"I--I don't know," Lucy told them nervously.
"And I think you do," Ian told them.
"Shut up, Ian," Mara told him in annoyance, pulling Pen and Lucy aside to talk to them away from Ian because she saw that he made them uncomfortable. "What was that about?"
"Um, we found out that Ian kissed Spencer last summer," Pen told her.
"Peyton saw them, and we weren't supposed to tell anyone," Lucy told her.
Mara sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. "Who else knows? Just you and your friends?"
"Yeah," Lucy answered. "Just us. We don't want anyone to get hurt."
Mara frowned in confusion. "You think that Ian would hurt you if the truth got out?"
Pen shook her head nervously. "She just meant that she doesn't want Melissa to get hurt if she found out that her husband kissed her sister last year, and that's why they broke up."
Mara sighed. "All right. Let's go get you guys home."
Lucy and Pen nodded in agreement.

Lucy and Mara led Emily outside.
Emily leaned against a wall. "Was that tree always here?"
Mara sighed. "Where did you get alcohol to drink?"
"Dakota," Emily answered. "She needed to drink to get through the night, and so did I, but I drank all of it. You're not gonna tell, are you?"
"No, I'm not gonna tell," Mara answered. "Who do you think you're talking to here?"
"Right," Lucy agreed. "Are you gonna drive us home?"
"Well, does it look like Emily's up to drive?" Mara replied. "Let's go home."
Emily shook her head. "No, I'm not going home."
Mara tilted her head at her. "Emily."
"I don't wanna see Mom," Emily told her. "If Mom sees me drunk like this, I'm gonna be feeding the bears with Maya." She reconsidered. "That's actually not a bad idea."
"Yes, it is," Lucy told her.
"Look, Mom's not gonna find out you're drunk, okay?" Mara asked. "Do you know how many times I came home drunk and she never knew?"
Lucy frowned a bit. "Do we really want to know the answer to that?"
Mara considered, shaking her head. Lucy smiled, and Emily laughed. Mara and Lucy walked Emily toward their car to get her home.
Spencer, Hanna, Dakota, Madison and Peyton walked outside.
"So, Aria's talking to Fitz, and Pen's going with Evan out for pizza," Hanna told them. "What are the rest of us gonna be doing?"
Spencer and Peyton looked nervous.
"Can someone stay the night over at our place?" Peyton asked. "I don't wanna be home alone when Ian walks in."
"I'll stay with you," Madison answered.
"Me too," Hanna told them.
"I would, but I gotta get home," Dakota told them.
"All right," Spencer told her. "See you later. Thanks, guys."
Spencer, Madison, Hanna and Peyton walked away, leaving.
Dakota walked toward her car, walking around to the driver's seat, reaching into her jacket pocket for her keys, accidentally dropping her scarf to the ground.
A bundle of money fell to the ground with it.
Dakota picked up the scarf and the money, flipping through the cash before putting it in her pocket, looking around swiftly, getting into the car to drive away.

Parking Lot
Ezra and Aria were talking next to Ezra's car.
"If you want, you should just leave with Simone," Aria told him sarcastically. "Take her home to New York."
Ezra frowned in confusion. "Why would you think I'd want--"
"Well, why wouldn't you?" Aria asked. "She's beautiful, and she's smart and funny."
"I met her yesterday," Ezra told her.
"She's successful," Aria told him. "You love her writing. She's your age. I--I can't compete with that."
"Nobody's asking you to," Ezra told her.
"Yeah, but it's true," Aria told him. "You two even look like a couple." She wiped away a tear. "You can dance with her and hold her hand in front of other people, leave your apartment at the same time without having to count to 50."
"Aria..." Ezra trailed off. Aria looked at him, jealous and hurt and insecure. "Why are we having this conversation? I'm... I am already in love with someone else."
Aria was surprised and touched and happy with this response. Ezra leaned in as if for a kiss, but they heard people laughing, looking down the way to see students walk away from the school. They looked at each other, smiling.

Fields House - Emily's Room
Emily, Lucy and Mara walked into Emily's room.
Emily looked at her phone, trying to make a call.
"Who are you calling?" Lucy asked.
"Maya," Emily answered. Mara took her phone away. "Give it back."
"Sisters don't let sisters dial drunk," Mara told her. "You'll thank me tomorrow, if you can remember my name." She had Emily lay down, covering her up, taking off her shoes. "Now, sit, lie, sleep."
Lucy smiled a small smile, looking at Emily. "If you need anything, we'll be right down the hall."
Lucy placed their jackets aside.
"Lucy?" Emily asked. "Mara?" They looked at her. "I said some pretty awful things tonight. To Dakota, and to Ian..."
"You were drunk after a long hard time," Lucy told her. "I'm sure they can understand."
Emily fell asleep.
Lucy and Mara slowly walked out of the room, turning off the light.

Hastings House - Peyton's Room
Madison, Hanna, Spencer and Peyton were sitting together.
Madison looked at a text on her phone. "It's from Lucy. She and Mara got Emily home safe and sound. She wanted to call Maya, so Mara took her phone."
"Smart," Spencer told them. "That could cause some serious damage."
Hanna looked at the papers on the table, moving them aside to reveal Dakota's laptop. "Peyton? Was this always sitting here?"
"No," Peyton answered, standing, walking closer. "Ian must have put it back before the dance."
Spencer opened the laptop, getting into it.
"Well, then, why didn't you notice it?" Hanna asked.
"He left after us," Spencer answered. She sighed. "The video's gone, and the trash and Dakota's email has been wiped."
"Surprise, surprise," Madison told them sarcastically.
Spencer pulled up a picture of Alison in the backyard by the barn.
"Oh, my God," Peyton told them. "It's Ali."
There was a message in the picture.
Watch your backs. I didn't.

"This was taken in your yard the night she disappeared," Hanna told them. "She's wearing the yellow top. There's a shadow right there like someone was following her. Guys, you know who that is?"
Spencer shook her head. "I--I have no idea."
The girls sighed in frustration.

Ella smiled.
