𝒙𝒗𝒊𝒊. "you're not some toy"

𝒓𝒚𝒂𝒏'𝒔 𝒑𝒐𝒊𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘

I SAT ON THE front porch of my family and I's home. The heat inside my bedroom was unbearable as I tried to sleep earlier. With nothing but a fan blowing on my sweaty body, I felt like I was going to melt.

My grandfather-like father always had to have the house burning hot at night, for some odd reason. It's a situation my siblings and I complain about almost every night.

With that high level of humidity, there was no way I was going to sleep. Not even if I'd try. My tired and frustrated body tossed and turned for at least 30 minutes.

I decided to come outside and get some fresh air on the front porch. The time was around 11 o'clock and everyone had already gone to bed or were in their bedrooms in my household. It was still warm outside, but at least it was bearable.

My day wasn't the best, considering I had to work around the farm and had scattered thoughts in my mind all day. I was frustrated, hot, and wanted to get inside and take a bath as soon as possible.

The night before had ruined my mood slightly, and honestly I was mostly being childish.

I couldn't wrap my head around why Louis would tell me all of these flirtatious things, but he still had feelings for the girl that used him for his wealth. It's not his fault he still has feelings though, which I completely understand. But, if he liked her, why is he making me feel this way?

The night at the Halloween gathering, was that nothing? Was the whole dancing situation just a one time thing?

And honestly, I shouldn't be feeling this way in the first place. I met the British boy at least 2-3 weeks ago, I shouldn't care for if he likes me or not at all.

But, when you're a teenage girl, it's just what happens.

The front steps of the porch creaked which lead my stranded thoughts to end. Darting my head towards the left, my eyes met with my grandmother in her fluffy pink bath-robe.

"What are you doing up?" I questioned. Standing up and approaching her, I helped her up the stairs. We both sat in two rocking chairs beside each other.

Grandma Lydia tightened her robe moderately. "Couldn't sleep with the fact your mind was filled with some silly ole' boy."

My eyes widened. Furrowing my eyebrows, I replied, "How did you-"

She laughed.

"Ryan, I know everything." She boasted. "Evelin also couldn't hush about some boy yesterday so I put two and two together."

I playfully scoffed, which lead her to quietly laugh.

We both rocked back-and-forth in the white wooden rocking chairs for about 2 minutes. We stared at the luminous stars in the dark black sky which shined down on our family legacy. Her grayish-brown hair flowed within the slight breeze.

"So, tell me, what happened?"

I rested my head on the back of the rocking chair and focused my eyes on her. "He hung out with this girl who did him wrongly, and he still likes her," I mumbled. "But he keeps saying weird things to me so it's giving me mixed feelings, ya know?"

My grandmother nodded her head "yes." She took a few seconds to think.

"That's how your grandfather did me, whenever we first met."

She began to chuckle and she placed her wrinkly hand onto mine, "But, I showed him who was boss, Ryan. I went up to that man and told him I wasn't going to put up with it."

The smile on her face became larger.

"He loved it, though. I showed him a strong-independent woman and he loved it for some odd reason. Which don't get me wrong, some men hate it when you do that. There's some who can't stand the fact they're not in control. But, we're married now so now he'll have to put up with all of this."

My grandparents came from down South all the way to California in the early 60s. They wanted a change, and didn't like the fact their "friends" acknowledged racism but didn't do a single thing about it. Which lead to them cutting them off at all costs.

My parents and grandparents raised my siblings and I to love others as Christ loves us. It's not something we ever questioned, or wanted differently.

She cleared her throat. "Tell him what you actually think. Show him you're not some toy that he has control over. And if he doesn't like that, screw him. Men aren't essential anyways."

My grandmother spoke up one last time, "And honestly, he might not even know he's doing it. Boys your age are clueless and their head isn't as mature as yours. Maybe he's just unmindful."

She was right, mostly. Louis acted completely unobservant in our text conversation.

A smile grew brighter onto my face. The woman beside me squeezed my hand tighter.

"Thank you, Grandma."

Nodding her head, she stood up. She straightened out her comfy robe and gestured me to stand up.

"Now get your butt in bed and turn that thermostat down! Your dumb father won't even notice."

I laughed and helped her down the porch stairs. As I watched her walk back to her house in across from mine, I began to replay the tips my grandmother recited to me earlier.

She's always been a woman of awesome advice.

The yellow-toned porch light of their house turned off, which notified me she was inside safe.

I headed back into my home and walked up the creaky stairs.

As quietly as humanly possible, I tiptoed down the hallway. Past Evie and Margot's room I went.

I turned the door-knob to my bedroom as silent as I could. Soon after, I closed the door behind me.

Flopping down on my bed, I covered myself with my white duvet cover. The comfort eased me a slight bit.

I fell fast asleep, with a little relief from the earlier advice circling throughout my mind.
