Diary Entry No#7
May 10th 1915
It's been five days since we got up the hill and we made it, we have been building defensive. I was placed in a squad, squad Cursed Crusade, anyways me and the squad where building a MG nest, pointing down at the beach, just in case of enemy reinforcements. It was rather cold but we couldn't argue, we got some rations of food and water. I say for everyone, since day one we all have been scared, a bomb could drop on us at any time. Our commander decided to have a smoke and offered us one, I said No, I wasn't a smoker, Anyway I was staring out into the river and I took a big breathe though my nose and I could smell gunpowder, smoke and some dust from the lads whom were digging the trench for the MG nest.
"Bloody hell Greg, watch where you're chucking that dirt". Said Jack in an angry tone. Jack was a childhood friend of mine. We heard distant gunfire, the soldier beside me grabbed his rifle, "Don't worry Private Galloway, most likely warning shots" said our commander. The soldier lowered his rifle.
It is my turn to start digging talk to you tomorrow dairy
Sincerely Private John Smith
