Diary Entry No #2
April 26th 1915
Today we pushed back the Turkish troops a few kilometers back so we had the warm beach to ourselves, to bad there are hundreds of dead bodies all over it, some crows may get full after this is over heh, although I am scared and sad. I am scared that I might die at any time and I'm sad because half these men laying on the ground I can remember from the training base back in Wagga Wagga, Australia. I am on break from moving these bodies and getting ready to bury them. It'll be hard but we'll get through it.
After looking at the beach, I feel scared if Australia was attacked. I got these thoughts of my family, friends, even my old school bullies being bombed and killed. But we still have a defence force there which hopefully will protect my home country. Some sunrays came through the clouds and something flashed in my eyes so I went to investigate, it was helmet with a silver clover on it, right next to a body with several bullet holes in him, God , hope he had a quick death. I looked at his Dog tags, Fredrick ' Lucky ' Johnson. 3 division, 14th battalion. Weren't so lucky today huh, I grabbed his dog tags, his rifle and his helmet. I made a small hole for the butt of the rifle to stay, I placed the Dog tags around the rifles bayonet and placed the helmet on the top of the barrel and I stood there in silence for a minute, thinking on how this all started and what would happen if this all played out different. Before I could think anymore, the commander called me over. I best leave it here I'll talk to you tomorrow.
Sincerely Private John Smith
