World's End • 2
Barry Allen woke to the incessant beeping of his beat-up, ten-year-old alarm clock. He stumbled out of bed, blearily rubbing his eyes and somehow making it downstairs to the kitchen without running into anything.
Joe was already up, as usual, and a pot of coffee was already made. Barry poured a cup and collapsed onto the couch beside Joe.
"What's up with you?" Joe asked, looking over the top of his newspaper at Barry.
"Cisco and I bet each other that we couldn't each pull an all-nighter. He won. I now owe him fifty dollars." Barry grumbled, slurping his coffee.
"How late did you make it?" Joe returned to his paper.
"Uh, around four-thirty I fell asleep. And Cisco was relentless with letting me know I had failed."
"Ouch. You're not gonna avoid that today, ya know. He will not let you forget," said Joe.
"Yeah, I know. He's probably told the whole team already. Yay, teasing all around." Barry rubbed his temples.
Joe chuckled. "You got yourself into this one, I ain't doing nothing about it."
Barry just slumped further on the couch and slurped his coffee.
__________
"Look here, it's the man who couldn't pull an all-nighter! The man who now owes me fifty bucks!" Cisco proclaimed this to the whole lab as soon as Barry walked in. He then held out his open palm, expectantly awaiting payment. Barry begrudgingly gave him the bet money.
"You don't have to announce my failure to the whole world, ya know." Barry said.
"Yes, I know this, but it's more fun this way." Cisco grinned and waved his cash in Barry's face.
Caitlin came over and leaned against the desk. "If it makes you feel any better, I can't pull an all-nighter either. Haven't since collage." She offered a sympathetic smile.
"Thanks, Cait. That makes me feel tons better." Barry rolled his eyes. Cait kissed his forehead.
"That's what I'm here for." She winked and walked back to her station.
Cisco smirked at Barry. "You're one lucky man to have that woman as your girlfriend."
Barry's eyes followed Caitlin as she worked. "Yeah, I am."
Harry stalked into the room, coffee mug and pencil in hand. "Ramon, what's the status on the latest meta?"
Cisco typed on his computer for a minute. "Meta is a twenty-eight-year-old female. Sarah Gray. Currently a waitress at Smoky Bear Barbecue."
"Was she in town for the particle accelerator explosion?" Barry asked.
"Yes. I'm assuming she's been hiding her powers and keeping them under control for two years, but they're becoming too strong. She accidentally caused a fire to break out at her apartment complex. Police wrote it off as a kitchen fire."
"So how do we know she set it?" Cait asked.
"Good question. Because it's not the first fire she's been present at, and came out of unharmed." Harry explained, reading the screen.
Cisco glared at him. "Stop taking my job."
"So it seems she can control fire and also has an immunity to it." Barry concluded.
"Yep. That appears to be the case." Cisco said.
Barry opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off by his phone ringing. It was Joe. "I'm gonna take this," he said, walking out of the cortex, and into the halls.
"Barry, have you heard from Iris this morning?" Joe asked, worry clear in his voice.
Barry was tempted to reply with, "Good to talk to you, too," but decided that probably wasn't appropriate given the current circumstances. "No, why?"
"She hasn't called me this morning. She always calls me. And her boss over at the news office called asking if she was sick."
"She didn't show up to work?" Barry's brow furrowed.
"Doesn't sound like it," Joe replied.
"I'll try calling her. Maybe she went for a late breakfast."
"Maybe." Joe sounded doubtful.
"Okay, I'll text you if I hear anything." Barry assured him.
"Alright, I'll just-" He was cut off.
"Joe?"
"Singh's not here. Neither are Blackwell or Thompson. Hold on, I'm running upstairs."
Barry waited while Joe investigated. Then Joe's voice returned. "Julian isn't here either. Bar, something's up. Let your team know. Get going on this!" Joe hung up.
Barry pocketed his phone and went back into the cortex. "Something's wrong guys. Singh, two officers, Julian, and Iris are all MIA."
Caitlin's brow furrowed gently. "Missing? Are you sure?"
"No. They're all absent form work though. And Iris never called Joe this morning."
"Ooooo-kaaaay. This isn't weird or creepy at all. Actually, this is one of the most normal things to happen to us. How sad is that?" Cisco threw his hands in the air, then started typing at his computer again.
"What're you doing?" Barry asked.
"Trying to locate Iris based on the tracker I placed in her phone." He frowned. "I got nothing. No signal, no Iris."
"What about the other earths? Are they missing people, too?" Cait asked.
"Don't know. It's probable." Cisco crosses his arms.
"Should we go visit one and see?" Barry asked.
Harry nodded. "I think we probably should. Allen, pick an earth."
"How about Earth-38? We can go visit Kara. If anyone knows what's going on, it'll probably be her and her team." Barry decided firmly.
"Excellent idea. Ramon, Snow, get your things around. We're going to Earth-38." Harry announced.
__________
Several minutes later, Barry stood in his suit in the breach room, duffel bag containing extra clothes and necessities in hand. Cisco was suited up as well, also holding a travel bag. Caitlin had a small bag and a backpack, and Harry was holding his rifle and backpack.
"Open the breach, Ramon." Harry ordered. Cisco obeyed. Barry grabbed Caitlin's hand, who grabbed Cisco's, who reluctantly grabbed Harry's. Then the four members of Team Flash sped through the breach into Earth-38.
__________
"Barry! What a surprise! What are you doing here?" Kara hugged her friend tightly. All the air was expelled from Barry's lungs, and he was fairly certain she'd crushed one or more of his ribs.
"Hey Kara. We're here because we have a big problem." Barry explained the situation.
Kara grew serious. "We have the same problem."
Barry grimaced. "Let's get to work then."
