August 2nd Roma Genocide Remembrance Day.
It was at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp,
that the Roma Genocide took place,
2897 men, women and children were taken
to gas chambers, as Hitler tried to destroy their race,
after the liberation of Auschwitz in 1945,
only 4 Roma had survived, for mankind a disgrace.
In May 1944 the Nazis began planning the end for Roma Family Group in Auschwitz, the date set was May 16th. After ordering them to stay in their barracks the building was then surrounded by SS men who then tried to force them out. To their surprise the SS men were met with a barrage of stones, wood and tools and had to withdraw. For fear of this happening in other camps on August 2nd on the orders of SS leader Heinrich Himmler, the 2897 Roma men, women and children were loaded into trucks and taken to gas chambers. After the camp was liberated in 1945 only 4 Roma had survived, a disgrace. In 1944, 4,000 Roma had suffered the same fate at this camp.
