Today is to pay tribute to aid workers,

who risk their lives each day,

providing humanitarian aid around the world,

and no matter how dangerous, they stay.

They are there for natural disasters,

to help with clean water and sanitation,

to support refugees in their struggles,

the world should applaud their dedication.

World Humanitarian Day was established by the General Assembly of the UN in December 2008. The date August 19th is the anniversary date of the 2003 Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad. That day 22 people were killed including Sergio Viera de Mello, who was the UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights and also the Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq.
