It was even warmer than usual. I need a break... Just a little pause... I've been travelling all day and it's really late... I leaned against a big tree, panting and sweating.

To be honest, I didn't even know where I was going. I was only doing what my mother had told me to. Looking for a better place to live. Saving myself. I wondered whether she was still— Don't think about it, Nic. Just don't.

A sudden blast and a bullet that was suddenly stuck right next to my head made me jump. What the— I looked around. There! Two silhouettes between the bushes and trees! Not them! I took out my gun, fired back, turned around and started running as fast as I could. Another blast and a sudden pain in my shoulder. Crap! I ran even faster. Looking for a place to hide, I noticed a large bush. This is it! I crept into the shadowy shelter. Wrapped my arms around my body to suppress the tremors. Calm down, Nic. Just breathe. I just hoped they hadn't seen me hiding here, prayed to Aphne that they hadn't followed me. This was when the pain in my shoulder came back and I noticed something warm running down my arm. I looked down at it. Blood. Of course. I ripped off a strip of cloth which had lost its blue color a long time ago from my T-Shirt and pressed it onto the wound. I would wash it out tomorrow, it was too dangerous to get out the bush now. Laying there, I soon fell asleep from exhaustion.

When I woke up the next morning, the first thing I noticed was the fact that I was hungry. Like, really hungry. I opened my eyes, got up and crept out of the bush. And smiled. A bird was sitting nearby a big tree and it hadn't seen me yet... I took out my slingshot, aimed and—

At once, I was laying on the ground, with somebody kneeling on my back.
