Chapter 2

As Aaron shut the door quietly, the aroma of newly made baked goods hit my nostrils. I could easily tell what was in the oven from the fresh scent-french pastries, baked alaska, baked potatoes and so many tantalizing baked goods.

As if on clue, a young woman, probably in her forties rushed out of one of the doors in the hallways, which is assumed to be the kitchen.

"Arrière ainsi bientôt Aaron?". said the young lady in a low gentle french tone. It was very clear that she was a frenchwoman. Upon that all, she was really a gorgeous looking lady-the way her silky red curly hair was hugging the sides of her chest made me feel a little timid for once. Not to mention the strict look that she has been wearing since she faced our direction.

"Si, this is...". He started and turned at me, raising an eyebrow, like to let me complete his statement. Right, I didn't tell him my name.

"It's Rosalie". I introduced myself, bowing swiftly to the young lady. "The new housemaid".

"Ah, yes". She gave me a warm smile while cleaning her soiled fingers with a towel. "I heard the masters say something about your presence, you're welcome...it's Rosella by the way".

"Rosella". I mouthed with a small smile at how our names almost looked alike. "Thank you, and you're the...?".

"The head chef". She said, tapping the pale- colored tag on her chest. "I'm in charge of the foods and drinks in this house".

Oh.

We both reached out our hands to have a handshake, but something terrible happened, before we could say shake our hands, a high-pitched bloodcurdling scream rumbled from another side of the hallway. My face went pale at what could have happened. I shifted my eyes to the two workers besides me, only for me to see fear and worry in their eyes. Who was that girl? And what could have gone wrong? I tried to calm myself by doubting it had anything to do with the Lords. I mean, they couldn't have done anything horrible to her, right?

I was about to run to check it out, but Aaron held my arm tightly, making me flinch at the sudden fierceness.

"You can't access any of the halls without showing your face to the one person that hired you in". He stated with a stern look of seriousness. I knew he was right, but the same time, hiding something. "I'd go inform the masters of your presence".

Glancing at Rosella, I noticed the goosebumps that appeared on her skin, there was visible fear on her face. She quickly walked away to where she had come from, murmuring some strange words to herself.

"This way". Aaron tugged at me before marching up the spirally stairs with my luggages. I stole one last glance at the other hallway and dashed towards the departing butler-the last thing I wanted to do here is get lost and end up elsewhere.

I wanted to ask Aaron what could have possibly gone wrong but the fear of getting the assumed answer stung me. He seemed to have noticed the look on my face because he gave me a small smile. Seeing him smile for the first time made me sort of relieved and comfortable.

I stared at some sightings as we past different french doors and windows by some corners. There were glassy chandeliers hanging here and there above the ceilings of all the ends, but the strange thing was that, each of them had a certain symbol at it's bottom. I was distracted by the sound of clattering dishes and turned to see some chefs and ladies lingering from different corners, with Rosella giving them certain instructions. Each doors before them had a huge writing written on a small metallic door plate but I couldn't see any of them as I wasn't wearing my glasses at the moment.

Finally, Aaron stopped at a door step which happened at the far end of the hall. It seemed different and strangely odd from the rest. Unlike the other doors, this particular door had a scary-looking gargoyle as the doorhandle. I also noticed some deep scratches and chips at the bottom of the door frame.

I shook my head to let go of any negative feelings and held my luggages as the butler rung the doorbell by the side of the door.

There was a dull noise from the inside of the room but as Aaron kept pushing the button, there was a disturbing silence from inside.

"I thought I told you not to disturb me tonight". An unmistakeable hint of anger was detected in the familiar deep voice. My blood went cold as Aaron glanced at me and the door, he wanted me to speak up but words couldn't come out of my mouth right now. I was nervous and scared.

"Sorry M-master Nicole, you told me to get the girl and I did sir". Aaron stuttered a bit. I would like if I said I wasn't trembling. I was trembling real bad. First, I leave home, second, weird screams and now, an angry boss? What could possibly happen next-leaving me stranded?

"Take her to her room". The voice ordered before letting silence consume us. "I'd get to interview her tomorrow morning". The breath that I've been holding for a long time finally escaped my lips as a relieved sigh. At least I get to freshen up before eventually having a talk with them. I'm so tired to start a conversation at this time of the night even.

I gave Aaron a nervous look but he lets out a small sigh and nods at me, signaling us to go. A small squeal left my lips when the voice spoke again, making both of us to freeze in submission.

"Do not leave your room during the midnight hours". The voice ordered, addressing me as the guest this time. I shouldn't leave my room?! What if I had an emergency or something?!

"Have I made myself clear?". He questioned in an intimidating tone. I could feel his glare piercing through my skin from the inside of the room.

"Y-yes". I quickly answered, narrowing my eyes at what he said. That word alone can made me very curious on what goes on in this mansion. I turned to Aaron to see him looking away and glancing at the huge clock that was standing against a wall.

"This way". He whispered and stomped down the hall, with my belongings tightly clutched in his arms. Stealing one last glance at this mysterious door, I dashed towards the impatient butler breathlessly.

We past more doors and odd looking corridors, the hallways even had more staircases and corners. Like seriously, how many rooms are in this mansion? Hundreds?! When would the turns and twists end?

After what seemed like forever, we arrived at another door, my door. I sighed in relief as the door wasn't creepy like the rest. It had pink coral flowers which looked like they were stretching to meet their pointed ends, above my door frame. And just like every normal door, it was plainly wooden, just the way I like it. The door knob normality- Check. Non creepy statues-Check. No marks or old dents-Check. No more c-

Before I could finish my thoughts, Aaron twisted the knob and burst open the door, revealing what the inner part of the room actually looked like.

I could feel my tired limbs trembling in happiness, but before I could ask anything, Aaron bade me goodnight and disappeared into the ends of the walls. It's like he was trying to avoid my questions, not that I blame him. He knows almost everything here than I do but probably likes to keep things to himself.

"Shoot, 11pm already?".
