Chapter 4.
Incredibly bored, I slouched in my chair as I half listened to what Mrs Briggs was talking about. It was the last half an hour of my class and my motivation was absolute zero when I suddenly felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. Sneakily sliding my phone out, I glanced down at the message that had popped up on my screen.
First day at work today! Excited? ;) x
I scowled at Noah's message and quickly sent a reply.
No. x
A few seconds later he messaged back.
Don't worry your pretty little head about it! It'll be fun! :) x
If your definition of fun is spending hours of your precious life slaving over Zach, I suggest you book yourself into a mental institute. x
You're probably right, but I'm far too sexy to wear one of those ugly white jackets! :P x
I laughed silently at his text as I replied. Alyssa gave me a questionable look from across the room and rolled her eyes at me.
Stop texting me, I'm in a class! Haha x
Oooh alright, don't get your knickers in a twist! I'll see you at work! ;) x
See you then! :) x
I sighed when I put my phone away and looked up at the clock - only twenty minutes left. I can do this. I tapped my fingers on the desk as I waited for my torture to end. Then I realised that I'd still have to go straight to work afterwards anyway. Great.
Twenty excruciating minutes later, the bell rang out and everyone got up from their seats. Alyssa walked over and raised an eyebrow at me.
"You were texting Noah, weren't you?" she accused playfully.
"No...?" I laughed.
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach when I thought about him and his stormy grey eyes causing a blush to quickly rise to my cheeks.
"Aw! Lou Lou's got a wittle cwush!" she teased as we walked out of the building. I gave her a look, but couldn't stop the grin emerging on my face.
"He's just a friend." I insisted.
"For now." she smirked, "I've seen the way you both ogle at each other like love sick puppies."
"No we don't." I blushed as she walked backwards, puckering her lips together and batting her eyelashes at me.
She suddenly stopped in her tracks, making me bump into her.
"What the he-" I began, before I saw the sight before me.
Leaning against a glossy black car in all his glory, Zach had his hands in his pockets before taking one out to glance at his Rolex watch clasped to his wrist. Most of the girls from my college had immediately noticed his presence and began whispering to each other about how 'sexy' he was. I had to admit, he was definitely a sight for sore eyes.
His dark hair was chaotic as usual, a five o'clock shadow remained along his chiselled jaw and he was wearing his black suit with a matching tie and a white shirt with polished shoes.
"I'll talk to you after work, yeah?" Alyssa smirked, shooting me a wink before disappearing into the crowd.
His deep brown eyes scanned the crowd before they fell on me. My heart shot into my throat as he caught my eye and all of a sudden I felt extremely self conscious as I combed my fingers through my hair nervously. I swallowed hard as I reluctantly made my way over, hating every step I took towards him and his devilishly handsome form.
When I got a metre away from him, I stopped and looked up at him, realising how tall he really was. His eyes raked down my body all the way from my head to my toes and back up again before they narrowed.
"You're not seriously thinking about going to work in that?" he asked distastefully.
I frowned and snapped, "Well, I don't exactly have anything else. Unless you want me to work in my underwear?"
Something flashed in his eyes before he sighed gruffly and pressed his lips together in thought. I couldn't help but stare at them. They looked so soft. My eyes widened at realised what I had just thought and I mentally slapped myself.
"We'll buy something on the way." he stated as he opened the car door and slid in.
He rolled down the window and ordered curtly, "Get in."
Feeling the eyes of most of my college on my back, I hurried around to the other side and opened the door before climbing in. I was immediately met with the sweet leathery scent of a new car mixed with the muskiness of his aftershave, it was strangely comforting.
"Put your seatbelt on." he said simply as he clipped himself in and started the engine. I glared over at him as I slotted the seatbelt over my chest.
"You didn't have to tell me, I was going to anyway." I muttered, getting comfortable in my seat.
He didn't answer and the car was filled with silence - the only thing audible was the sound of it driving and the occasional beeping of another car as it sped past. I stared out of the window, watching the blurs of the streets and people as we drove.
Bored of the sound of my own breathing, I turned in my seat to look at him. His eyes were fixed on the road, slightly narrowed as he concentrated on driving.
"I thought I damaged your car?" I frowned.
"It's a company car." he shrugged, keeping his attention on the road.
"Oh. So...where do you work, anyway?" I asked curiously.
There was a moment of silence before he answered.
"A brothel." he replied simply.
Horrified, I coiled back into my chair and my jaw dropped. "What?!" I yelled.
Erupting in laughter, his deep laugh resonated in the car making shivers go down my spine and he turned slightly as we came to a traffic light.
"I'm joking. I work at Ebony Records." he told me, turning back to face the road.
I glared at him, "That wasn't even funny. This car is creepy enough with it's black tinted windows anyway without you saying you work at a brothel."
"Take a joke, Lou." he smirked as the traffic light turned green and he began driving again. I felt a weird sensation in my chest as he said my name, but quickly shrugged it off as heartburn or something.
We came to a halt outside a upmarket shop and he turned off the engine before getting out of the car. I unclipped my seatbelt and quickly did the same. He turned around and locked it with his keys causing it to make a beeping sound before he shoved them in his pocket.
I followed him as he strode inside the classy boutique and I felt totally out of place in my boring clothes surrounded by so many stylish clothes. Momentarily stunned by the elegance of the store I was literally snapped out of it as Zach stood in front of me clicking his fingers.
"Follow me." he ordered abruptly.
He made his way through the clothes and I hurried behind him, trying to keep up with his large strides. Pausing for a moment, he glanced over a rack of items before grabbing one of the hangers with a dress on and inspected it for a moment before putting it back. He frowned and moved on to the next section of the shop.
I looked around and saw a woman coming towards us in skyscraper red heels with a black fitting dress down to her knees and her blonde hair pulled back into a fashionable bun with stray curls falling around her face perfectly. I was completely shell shocked at her beauty. Her plump red lips pulled back into a fake smile as she walked over to Zach, her hips swaying side to side seductively as she did so.
"Excuse me, do you need any help?" she asked a sickly sweet tone coating her words as she glared at me out of the corner of her eye. I bit my lip and fidgeted uncomfortably under her scornful glower.
Unfazed by her presence, he answered politely, "Yes actually, do you have any petite sizes?"
Petite sizes? I'm not petite! Well...at 5"4" I'm not exactly the tallest female in the world.
"Of course. Right this way." she replied, gesturing to the other side of the shop.
Zach glanced back at me then followed her as she walked away. I weaved through the clothes until we came into a clearing where a mannequin stood in the middle of two changing room doorways. I looked up at the mannequin admirably as it wore a beautiful white blouse with a black pencil skirt and suede black heels.
"How much for that outfit?" Zach suddenly asked after he followed my gaze still fixed on the mannequin.
"Well," the woman began, or Anna as it said on her name badge, "The blouse is £38 and the skirt and heels are both £30, so altogether it would cost £98 for the whole look."
"I'll take it all." he stated simply, taking out his wallet.
All colour drained from my face. Was he seriously going to pay that much for clothes?!
Ignoring the fact my stomach did one of it's infamous back flips when I touched him, I quickly clamped my hand on his arm just as he was about to hand over the money to her. His brows lowered as he leaned down.
"What are you doing?" he hissed under his breath.
"Can't you buy something cheaper? I already owe you enough money as it is!" I pleaded in a whisper.
Despite the fact I'd kept my voice down, Anna still heard and she placed her hands on her hips and raised an overly plucked eyebrow.
"If you want something cheaper, perhaps it's best if you go to a lower quality store." she sneered with disdain.
"Just give me your shoe and dress size." he ordered. I stayed silent, making him sigh with frustration. "Lou." he warned.
"I'm a six and my shoe size is four." I told him quietly, caving under his stern gaze.
"Right, dress size six, shoe four." he confirmed as he turned around to Anna and handed over the money. "Here."
She smiled sweetly at him before glaring at me as she strode off to get the clothes, her heels clicking on the wooden floor.
"We could have gotten something cheaper." I muttered.
"You're not wearing something cheap. If you're going to be my personal assistant, you need to make a good impression on anyone who walks into my office." he told me as Anna sauntered back with the clothes in an oversized bag.
"Here you go." she said pleasantly as she handed them over to Zach.
"Thanks." he replied curtly before turning to me. "Now get changed."
Instead of arguing, I took the clothes off him without protest as I walked into the changing rooms. Frowning at the clothes, I sighed. I couldn't believe he spent so much money on them.
When I was finished changing, I glanced at the mirror and my eyes nearly fell out of their sockets with shock; I did not look like me at all.
Forced to stand up completely straight to keep my balance in the heels, I looked much more professional than before, the silk blouse clung to my body more than I thought it would and dipped down, revealing a small amount of my cleavage without looking smutty and the pencil skirt hugged my waist as well as my behind, accentuating my curves as it ran down to my knees but the heels were really uncomfortable.
"Lou-" I heard his deep voice call. "Hurry up."
Frowning at his impatience, I quickly smoothed down the skirt, ran my fingers through my hair and walked forward towards the curtain, staring at my feet as I concentrated on walking in the heels.
I suddenly crashed into a hard chest and stumbled back but two strong hands clamped down on my upper arms to steady me, making a wave of shivers surge across my skin. My eyes darted up to see Zach stood in front of me, his hands still firmly on my arms. His jaw clenched as he stared down at me in silence, his umber eyes scanning down my body slowly.
We were so close I could feel the heat radiating from him as well as the warmth from his hands on my arms. I stood there awkwardly under his intense gaze until he cleared his throat, releasing my arms and stepping back a little. He swallowed hard before breaking the silence.
"You were taking a long time so I just came in..." he muttered, his voice low before he trailed off. I nodded.
"Is it okay?" I mumbled timidly, feeling uncomfortable from the tension filling the room.
He nodded brusquely, "It's good enough." he commented bluntly, one of his hands grasping my wrist. "Let's go or you're going to make me late."
I fought not the suck in a sharp breath when his hand touched my skin and a spark shot down my arm. He didn't seem to notice and confidently lead the way out of the shop, his hand still around my wrist. I followed him quietly to the car before he opened the passenger side, letting me get in before he went to the other side.
He started the engine without a word and drove off.
