Silent and unseen

I am but a target

For those who seek to push and prod

With their pointed words and actions

Trying to incite a reaction from my facade

I grow weary of the constant prodding

The relentless poking and pricking

Expecting me to stay quiet and submissive

Enduring their taunts without kicking

But when I finally stand up for myself

And push back against their barbs

I am labeled the bad person, the aggressor

For defending myself from their jabs

Is it wrong to protect my own heart?

From the wounds inflicted by others?

Is it a sin to defend my own soul?

From those who seek to smother?

I will no longer suffer in silence

I will no longer be a willing martyr

I will stand up and fight for my peace

Even if it makes me the "baddest" character

For it is human nature to defend oneself

Against those who seek to harm

I will not cower in fear any longer

I will not let myself be disarmed

So poke me with your pins if you must

But know that I will no longer stay silent

I will roar like a lion in defense of myself

For I am not a bad person for defending what's right.
