Who knew a few months could fly by so quickly?
A few months that have made relationships grow and become stronger than a heavyweight wrestler.
Ever since that fateful night, Seungcheol constantly visited the Yoon family after school, most of those times consisted of him staying over. They would buy takeout after school and eat it on the way to the forest, Seungcheol eating most of the vegetable-based foods as Jeonghan stole all the meat. Studying, dancing, talking, eating, they were always doing the same things on repeat, yet Seungcheol didnt mind. As long as he can fulfil his dream of being his crush's boyfriend, he will spend every day with him. Jeonghan didn't care either, he enjoyed having someone his age to hang about with, not to mention the fact that he finds the older cute.
"We have maths to do, correct?" Jeonghan asked, his mouth full of the flavourful chicken.
"I thought we completed that in class." As he picked up another chip, Seungcheol answered.
Casually walking down the same, practically abandoned street that caused their meeting, their fingers touched gently as they bounced, both boys' hearts beating a little harder at each interaction. It was a bit quieter, although Seungcheol started playing some music of Jeonghan's choice to lighten the mood. The song happened to be Cheer Up by Twice, so he was obviously satisfied with his crush's taste in music. He looked up at the long-haired boy, admiring his fabulous features. Part of his hair sat on his scalp in a loose bun, the rest cascading down to his shoulders. Seungcheol liked the man bun look on Jeonghan today - not saying that he doesn't look stunning everyday, of course. The boy's skin was clearer than Seungcheol's future, not a single spot of acne in sight, and his plump lips were stretched up into a gleeful smile. Seeing that beautiful face everyday changed Seungcheol's perspective of the world, seeing people in a new light and not judging them by what they look like. You could say that Seungcheol fell completely for Jeonghan's personality once they met, the looks just being an added bonus that he would be forever grateful for.
Throwing the paper bag in someone's black bin, Jeonghan took Seungcheol's cold arm and dragged him deeper into the woods, not caring if their navy uniforms were stained with the sludgy mud. The older realised that Jeonghan was leading him in the opposite direction to where the cave was, and started questioning where the younger could be leading him.
"Where I'm taking you is a place that no one knows of except for me." Jeonghan smiled, looking back on his friend. "People don't dare walk west in the woods, let alone even walk into the woods in the first place. So this placed is just like a little getaway where we can have some peace, away from my hormonal brothers. I call it 'Angel's Creek'."
"So you named it after yourself?" Seungcheol muttered, a smile creeping higher up his face.
"Pardon?"
"Never mind."
They saw the opening, and the view was stunning. The bright lights in the sky shimmered on the lake waves, gently passing over the rocks beneath. It was relatively large, around the size of a school swimming pool, yet the surrounding trees made it seem so much more secluded and hidden away than it actually seemed. The oak trees acted as a backdrop for the river, the quiet sounds of crickets the soundtrack to the area. The navy horizon touched the lake, the reflection of it glistening like glitter and the waves shook it softly. Fluffy clouds that dotted the skyline were scarce, not blocking the way for the moon or its shining stars. Seungcheol felt relaxed, the calm atmosphere floating around the lake gave him a small relief. Little gems around Seoul like this are precious to the ones who find it.
"I...it's...stunning." Speechless Seungcheol found the words to comment on the matter.
"Let's go sit on that log by the lake," Jeonghan pointed to a long chunk of wood, that had moss growing on the left side. The scenery was more breathtaking from their front row seat, being so close to the waters that their school shoes became soggy at their toes. The long haired angel looked at Seungcheol, giving him a smile and then a sigh.
"What was that for, Mr Mixed Emotions?"
"Well, I want to tell you something and it's been bugging me for a while." Jeonghan began, the older nodding for him to continue his story. "There's this boy in my maths class that I like. He wants to try and seem tough, but the way he isolates himself from everybody but his close friends, and hunching up behind a good book before class, makes him cute. His giggle sounds like a bird's song, and his voice makes me weak at the knees. He's so different to all the other boys at my school, going out of his way to do things for others. If you need the support, he seems like the guy to go, and his hugs make me feel as if I've been covered in a warm blanket. But he won't notice my love, and takes it for granted."
"Who is he?" Seungcheol asked, worried for the answer. What if it isn't me? There are quite a few socially awkward potatoes at my school, including myself. But why would Jeonghan like me? I'm only a close friend, according to him.
"Are you really that flipping dense?" Jeonghan cackled, "who else in my school is socially awkward, reads John Green books before class, gives me hugs, and is in my maths class?"
"I don't know, maybe Kyungsoo?"
"Kyungsoo?! Not only are you dense, but you're horrible at finding rumours!" Jeonghan was practically wetting himself by now, laughing so hard his stomach started to hurt. "He's going out with Jongin!"
"Really? Then who are you talking about?" Jeonghan gave himself a facepalm, looking back up at Seungcheol and giggling.
"Who has two grandparents, a name beginning with S, and looks like a camel?"
"...ME?!" Seungcheol's soul jumped out of his skin when the younger nodded and made a dinging sound with his voice. "You really do?" He nodded again, "well, that's lucky actually. Because, I...like...food-I mean you! I like you too. Like too as in as well, not the number two, I don't listen to U2, the band. My grandfather does though-"
"Cheollie!" Jeonghan's voice rang, interrupting Seungcheol's awkward breakdown. "I understand what you mean, and I'm glad."
They sat there for a while, staring into the distance and admiring the atmosphere, and then back at each other, spotting each of the other's perfections. These shared glances made butterflies run wild in their stomachs, unsure of what to do next. They confessed, it's just who would be the one to take it to the next level. With the crickets and frogs as their background music, the long haired boy inhaled, and then exhaled the same amount.
"Do you wanna kiss?" Jeonghan asked, hoping for permission. "I mean, you don't have to if you're uncomfortable. I don't mind."
Seungcheol grabbed Jeonghan's waist, pulling him closer until their bodies touched. Gently stroking the younger's jawline, Seungcheol smirked and chuckled, whispering softly to a flustered Jeonghan as their eyes met. "Yes sir." The younger was shocked at first, realising that his question was being answered as Seungcheol connected their lips like a charger to a plug socket. He smelt of strawberries, fresh and ripe from the fields, and his smooth lips felt wonderful on Jeonghan's own. Running his hands through the younger's hair, Seungcheol deepened the kiss, hearing Jeonghan giggle like a small child. Deciding not to pull away, he slowly leaned the boy back, Jeonghan soon laying down on the circular log as they continued their make-out session in the silence of 'Angel's Creek'.
But, something happened that felt weird to Seungcheol. It was almost like his bones were being restructured, aching pains spreading across his back like wildfire as he continued to osculate with Jeonghan and tried to ignore it. Obviously, when people kiss their soulmate, their stomach swirls like whipped cream and electric sparks fly about their presence, but Seungcheol didn't think it was as horrible as this feeling. His stomach stretched and twisted inside him like an elastic band, causing him immense pain, and his ears went numb from high-pitched frequency sound waves digging through his ear drums. He could barely cope with the pain, but carried on snogging Jeonghan, so he would know that everything is alright and he has no need whatsoever to worry. He then felt the draught pick up and the leaf litter flying around him like lost birds. Warmer was Seungcheol, unaware of the cause of this situation as he cupped Jeonghan's face in his hands as if it was a hot bowl of soup - meaning he had to be gentle with such a fragile object.
They pulled away, catching a breath before sitting back up on the log. Jeonghan rubbed his eyes from the protracted make-out session with the older, blinking a couple of times before taking another look at his crush. However, what sat in front of Jeonghan wasn't what he expected, and because of it, the boy almost fell back-first into the lake. He had to pinch himself to see if he was still dreaming, yet what the world displayed through his eyes was reality. Jaw dropped, Jeonghan was speechless.
"What is it? Are you shocked at my kissing skills?" Seungcheol laughed, trying to boost his self esteem while Jeonghan was stressing out over this boy. Spotting the older's phone on the ground, Jeonghan quickly opened up the camera and shoved it in Seungcheol's face.
"Have a look for yourself!" He said, waiting for Seungcheol's eyes to adjust to the bright light. In front of him, the camera displayed what seemed to be himself, yet he was shocked at the actual image as well. A black and brown animal sat tall in Seungcheol's place, irises like the daylight skyline surrounding his pupils. His ears stuck upwards, sensing any far away noises, and his paws patted the ground as he tried to stay comfortable. As a tail wrapped around his side and popped out in front of him, he realised full what had happened. He had turned into a wolf himself, and when he tried to speak up, all Jeonghan could hear was a wolf's howl.
"Oh god, oh god, oh god!" Jeonghan stressed, locking the device and shoving it in his back pocket for Seungcheol. "How could I have let this happen?"
Seungcheol whimpered, rubbing his nuzzle against Jeonghan's calf. Squatting down to his level, Jeonghan gave a warm hug to the wolf, sniffling in sadness. "I'm so sorry, Cheollie." He stood up, regaining balance, and called for Seungcheol to follow him back to the cave, where Yoon Yoongi would be waiting for his son's return.
---
After what seemed like years of running, they finally reached the cave, Jeonghan practically out of breath from the long distance run. The run from the forest entrance to his current location was nothing, but this recent run felt like he had just ran two marathons. Yoongi and Joshua were sat around the fire as they were talking about future events involving other packs; Jihoon was getting his fur washed by Chaerin, and it was obvious to tell that Jihoon would rage out at any given moment because of this; and Seungkwan and Dokyeom were having a vocal battle to see who was the best singer out of the two, singing complex melodies with demanding notes that required wide vocal ranges like theirs. Jeonghan ran straight to his father of course, being the member of the family who interacted with other packs more often than the rest.
"Appa! Appa!" He shouted, Yoongi turning his head towards his son, and tilting his head in confusion when he saw the brown and black wolf following behind. "I need your help desperately!"
"What's the matter?" Yoongi questioned, scratching his head of mint hair. "And where's Seungcheol? Is he not joining us today?" The wolf barked.
"This is Seungcheol, appa." Jeonghan confessed, stroking the back of the wolf. "We shared a kiss and then when we parted, he ended up like this..."
"So I was right!" Yoongi mumbled to himself, Jeonghan pouted in bewilderment.
"Pardon me?"
"Jeonghan," he patted the group next to him, offering a seat to his son. "There's this old wives' tale that I heard when I was a young pup. When a human ends up becoming a wolf's mate, there are specific reasons behind it. If said human and wolf kiss on the lips, the human will gain the abilities of a wolf like yourself, meaning he can switch between forms with a simple phrase. But, what I'm afraid of is the fact that Seungcheol might get caught by someone if he goes out into the city after this."
"He needs to attend school! He has a family to tend to! You can't just deprive him of his life, appa! That is selfish and cruel, and you know it!" Jeonghan shouted,
"That is not how you should be speaking to your alpha, Jeonghan!" Yoongi raised his voice, causing the boy to whimper in his place. "Especially considering the fact that you are the next in line to run this pack, because that can easily be moved on to the next of kin, can't it Joshua?" Joshua looked over in surprise when his name was called, clueless of the conversation as he was daydreaming of a random fantasy.
"Sorry," Jeonghan sighed, "it's just that I don't want to leave Seungcheol like this. I can't even talk to him currently."
"If you want to talk to him so badly," Yoongi began to state, "all he has to say is the last sentence he spoke before the kiss. Simple enough?"
Seungcheol tried to recall the past events, thinking around for the correct phrase.
"Do you wanna kiss? I mean, you don't have to if you're uncomfortable. I don't mind."
"Yes sir."
Wolf Seungcheol barked immediately after he remembered the moment, which drew the attention of Jeonghan and Yoongi straight to him. They assumed that he knew, and let him find a way to turn himself back.
"I think I have it, let me try it out." He mumbled, his monologue unknown to the others. "Yes Sir."
It worked. Spinning spirals of leaf litter circled his body, and he felt his bones rebuild themselves into the familiar form he knew for his whole life. The fur that covered his skin sunk back into his body, the long nose pushed back into his face forcefully. Finally back to normal, Jeonghan grinned, pressing his face up against Seungcheol's chest and wrapping his arms around his waist. "Thank god you're okay." He heard the muffled whisper come from the younger, in which he stroked the back of Jeonghan's head like he was a pet.
"You have to be extremely careful in what you say now, Seungcheol." Yoongi interrupted, the person mentioned looking up at him. "If you get caught, you could get turned into the authorities, and sent to a kennel." Seungcheol's eyes widened.
"Didn't that happen to the two Chinese wolves?" Jeonghan spoke, detaching himself from his mate and facing his father.
"Yes, Junhui and Minghao got turned in." Yoongi bowed his head in respect, "Junhui managed to escape with a few injuries, but when he went to find Minghao..." he gulped, "he was already long gone. They were mates as well, god knows whats happened to Junhui now."
"That is why we howl every full moon, to show our respect to those who were taken." Joshua butted in, rocking back and forth as he crossed his legs. "And that is also one of the reasons my brothers and I don't go to school, knowing how clumsy we are. The only person we trust is Jeonghan, to be honest, but not even he thinks he's safe."
Seungcheol sighed, looking up at the night sky, and then down at his digital watch. 9:46pm. He was about to get his phone out and call his grandparents, saying he was going to stay around again, but he hasn't seen them in a long while, and if they just drop dead all of a sudden, then Seungcheol wouldn't be able to forgive himself for the amount of time he spent with them. "I'm gonna get going, don't worry about me for now. See you tomorrow, Jeonghannie! Thank you Mr and Mrs Yoon! Bye Josh, Jihoon, Seungkwan, and DK!" They all replied back with a gleeful goodbye as the older made his way through the woods and back to his small bungalow.
---
'Cheollie...' he mumbled, leaning back for his boyfriend to place special marks along his neck as if he was making his body a work of art.
'Your skin is so smooth, baby. So pale. It's just wishing for me to kiss it right now.' Seungcheol smirked, tracing circles on the younger's chest. 'Your body was made just for me to explore.'
'Just you?' Jeonghan smirked, 'you're lucky I'm not an international playboy, honey boo.'
'My sweet cheeks, my princess, my one and only. I'd make sure you were mine only, not matter what it took.' The older leaned in, passionately bashing his lips against Jeonghan's. He heard his mate giggle as he kissed against him, gripping ahold of his shirt, and then Seungcheol awoke. [this is so cringe oml stop meeeee i'm sorryyyyyy]
Seungcheol sat upright, mentally cursing himself for waking up so early. It was a Friday, and seeing as he had already taken his maths exam, he didn't have to be in school until 10am with Mingyu and Wonwoo. Looking at himself in the mirrored wardrobe, his eyes went in and out of focus at his figure in front of him, scratching his head as he dragged himself out of bed. Might as well make some breakfast while I'm awake.
What he didn't expect when he walked into the living room was his grandfather sitting on the green sofa, watching war movies as he fiddled with his antique collection. The old man looked up, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose and smiling weakly at his grandson. The antique box was made of mahogany, a golden lock on the front to secure it shut. It was filled to the brim with trinkets and papers that could be worth millions today. Of course though, his grandpa wasn't going to sell them on eBay to earn a few bucks, these memories were precious to him, and had to be kept safe in the right hands.
"Morning, Seungcheol." His grandpa spoke up,
"What are you looking at today?" Seungcheol responded, curious as to what the leather book in his hands contained.
"It's an account by my father, saying what he did during the war. The routines, the food, the fighting. All of it was recorded until this book in story form. Did you know your great grandfather wanted to be an author?" The boys shook his head, and they both looked at the TV when the general shouted 'attention!'. "Remember when we used to play that game when you were younger, Seungcheol?" He nodded as a reply, "let's play it again!"
"How does it work again?" Seungcheol questioned, "it's been years since we've done this."
"When I say attention, you stand straight. When I say at ease, you step your left leg out to the side. When I say about turn and an angle, you turn clockwise. When I say salute, you salute and say yes sir." His grandfather announced, and Seungcheol realised how deep of a hole he just dug himself into. 'He's going to find out! I'm going to be sent to a kennel!' But instead of panicking, Seungcheol stayed casually still, knowing that this day had to come at some point. "Attention!"
Following his guardian's orders, he laughed when he messed up and applauded himself when he succeeded. Surprisingly he never said salute, Seungcheol hoping that he might get away with it today, so he can live a normal life until he graduated. But - of course - that wasn't the case, and the word slipped through his grandfather's cracked lips. Seungcheol saluted, averting his eyes away from his grandpa, but kept his lips sealed shut.
"Seungcheol, you're meant to say 'yes sir!'"
"Was I?"
"Yes, I said it in the rules."
"No you didn't."
"I didn't?"
"Either that or I'm deaf."
"You're not. Now salute."
The boy wished he could freeze time and run away, just leave society and live without fear, but of course the world didn't work like that. Being part wolf now, he could understand Jeonghan's struggles, and how he feared for his and his family's life when he realised that Seungcheol knew his secret, and of course it made him scared of other people's reactions. He couldn't not obey his grandpa's rules now, after they'd been explained crystal clear to him. So, after exhaling and crossing his fingers, Seungcheol proudly let the two words pass through his lips, and enabled the transformation to occur.
His grandfather was in shock, clutching ahold of his chest and the box as he watched his grandson briskly change into his new form. He looked majestic afterwards, sitting upright and tilting his head in front of his grandfather, but all his legal guardian could see was a hybrid, a so-called monster, one that was unwanted by the old man. Having a bad history with wolves in his younger years, his grandpa was furious, yet slight fear was still present in his eyes. As his grandma strolled in and saw the wolf on the floor, she screamed. "WOLF!" Her voice was shaky, grabbing the broom beside the door and ready to hit the wolf into oblivion. "Seungcheol! Help me get rid of this thing!" While her back was turned, Seungcheol licked her hand to show her he was here, in which once again, she screamed. "Mutant! Mutant! Kyuwon, are you going to help me or not!"
"Get out, you monster!" His grandfather angrily kicked the wolf until he was out of the front door. "Don't you dare come back, or else we'll call the kennel on you! I refuse to call a werewolf my grandson!"
"Yes sir..." and with that, Seungcheol was back in his human form and ran all the way to the woods, ignoring Mingyu and Wonwoo who were sharing a quick kiss before they were due to pick him up.
---
Run. Just run. Don't stop. Not ever. Those were the words that passed through Seungcheol's mind as he made his way expeditiously through the woods. His eyes were as red as strawberries, bags hanging low from his lids. It was from the tears. He tried to prevent any of them land in the cut, given to him by his grandfather as a farewell gift, as he avoided tripping up over sticks hiding on the floor. He didn't want to face Jeonghan, not like this, but that smiling face was all he wanted right now. The long, chocolate coloured hair that loves to get tangled in Seungcheol's fingers; the sparkling eyes that can show thousands of emotions; the sweet smile that could light up an entire country. All of Jeonghan's perfections - and imperfections - were what made Seungcheol fall head first in love with the boy. He's the only sort of comfort he can resign in right now.
After a long session of constant running, a trail of tears dotted behind him, he found his way to Jeonghan's, and tried to spot him amongst his family. Jihoon was threatening Dokyeom for something random; Joshua was teaching Seungkwan English, and Seungkwan was failing to pronounce the word 'quality'; Mr and Mrs Yoon were trying to separate Jihoon and Dokyeom, Mr Yoon leaving a red hand mark on Jihoon's cheek; and Jeonghan was standing by the cave, nibbling on some meat that was left over from the night before. He looked so cute, his eyelids fluttering and he innocently took each bite, it made Seungcheol weak at the knees. Once last sprint got him to Jeonghan, and he shocked the boy when his arms wrapped around his waist, letting all of his terrified tears drip down his cheeks and stain Jeonghan's shirt.
"Seungcheol-" he spoke, surprised at the sudden contact. Never in his life had he seen Seungcheol cry, not even once. Giving off the emotionless vibe, Seungcheol would be the last person Jeonghan would expect to cry. However, having to admit it, he didn't mind Seungcheol crying in his arms. It hurt him, obviously, but it gave him a reason to call himself his friend. Jeonghan wrapped his arms around Seungcheol, cooing him to a silent whimper. "Cheollie, what is it?"
"M-M-My grandparents, they...t-they..." he choked on his words and bursted into more tears, and that when Jeonghan noticed the scar on Seungcheol's cheek.
"I shouldn't have let you go back," Jeonghan guiltily admitted, his eyes starting to well up. He could hear his dad silently whispering to Joshua 'I told him so', but he had good intentions. "And I'm not letting you go back."
"B-But, what about my..."
"They don't care about you, obviously." Jeonghan whispered into the older's ear, "not like how I can." He moved Seungcheol's face to have them share eye contact, and sighed. "You're going to stay here with me, we're dropping out of school."
A wave of shock hit the Yoon family at Jeonghan's words, realising that he was giving up his dream for one boy. That boy happening to be his mate, of course. "But, Hannie, what about you joining an idol company and becoming famous like you told us?" Seungkwan asked, walking up to the pair.
"Not if Seungcheol isn't safe." Jeonghan mumbled back, just loud enough for his brother to hear the reply. Turning to Seungcheol, he gave a weak smile. "Now, give me your phone."
"It's only on 1%." The older spoke back, taking it from his back pocket and placing it in the hands of Jeonghan. "I left my charger at home..."
"We don't want to keep contact with anyone else outside this forest, so that's a good thing." Jeonghan said, typing in the school's number after turning the phone to No Caller ID.
Ring Ring...Ring Ring...
"Hello, Pledis School of Performing Arts, reception speaking."
"Hello, this is Yoon Jeonghan's dad calling on behalf of Yoon Jeonghan and Choi Seungcheol." Jeonghan was speaking in a voice deeper than the Pacific Ocean, and Seungcheol had to admit, he did sound extremely sexy. "Seungcheol's grandparents have had bad throats recently so I've said that I'll speak for them. My son and Seungcheol have been struggling in school recently, and have tried to ask for help but nothing has been given in return. We feel as if we shouldn't have to ask for help for our children, so we have come to the conclusion that we are going to pull our children out of school and give them private tutoring."
"Hmm, okay. We will send both families a sheet of information so we can provide you both with private tutoring, but I seem to have misplaced your addresses."
"We are 12 Sesame Street, and the Choi's are 64 Zoo Lane." Jeonghan spoke, still in his husky, older man accent.
"Okay, thank you sir." Then, Jeonghan hung up.
"Are 12 Sesame Street and 64 Zoo Lane even addresses?" Seungcheol questioned, causing Jeonghan to shake his head. Bursting into laughter, Seungcheol felt happy, he felt loved. So, this is what being in a family feels like.
--
Running. The beautiful summer zephyr rushing through the hairs on his being. The sun was shining brightly, creating shadows and highlights across the land. The lakes and puddles shimmered with equal light, and the cotton candy clouds bounced on the skyline. He looked to the side of him, admiring the majestic wolf that was Jeonghan. He was smiling, giggling, trying to outrun the older. The sun reflected off of his brown eyes, causing them to sparkle like stars. His tail swiftly moved from side to side, his paws gently brushing against the floor before being lifted up again as he ran. He looked ravishing, racing in front as they made it closer to their home.
"Yes! I won!" Jeonghan cheered once he was in human form, his eyes smiling with his lips as well.
"Maybe next time," replied Seungcheol, also in human form, giggling at how cute Jeonghan looked at this point in time.
"Dinner won't be ready for a while," Chaerin looked up from around the fire, "go inside and have a nap or something, I don't know." She chuckled to herself as the boys walked in.
"I'm surprised Jihoon isn't in here sleeping," Seungcheol said, "he's never one for being active."
"Father probably asked him to get something, don't expect him to be in a good mood when he's back though." Jeonghan beamed, grabbing a hold of the older's hand without warning. Seungcheol had a small wave of shock when they made contact, feeling the younger's fingers rub against his own. Comfort came rushing in after, Seungcheol reaching out for their vacant hands to join. Of course, Jeonghan accepted, their fingers intertwining and their eyes meeting in the middle. The long haired boy brought himself closer to the latter so that their bodies were touching, looking up at the taller boy. He reached up on his tip-toes and pecked the older's lips, holding them their for a long and slow kiss. Seungcheol, when Jeonghan was about to pull away, leaned in and continued the kiss, smelling the fresh scent that surrounded Jeonghan due to his extensive amount of time outside. Jeonghan was sure he could hear fireworks erupting around them, and his stomach twisted in knots at the enjoyment. After about 10 seconds, they pulled away, staring into each other's brown as Seungcheol pushed some of Jeonghan's astray hairs away from his face.
"Damn, you're so beautiful." He whispered, causing a rosy pink blush to spread across Jeonghan's cheeks. Nuzzling his head into the crook of Seungcheol's neck, he wrapped his arms around the older's waist, smiling from ear to ear.
"Damn, you're so handsome." Seungcheol felt a cold liquid drop on his shoulder, when he realised it was Jeonghan's tears. "So handsome that I'm crying. How did I deserve someone so stunning like you?"
"I could ask you the same thing, baby." The taller grinned, squeezing on tighter to the boy, never wanting to let go.
