Summary: "Pollen Season, great." Or where Dan has hay fever and Phil wants to make Dan happy in the summer.
Word Count: 1,470
-------------------------------------------------------
"Pollen Season, great." He thought, staring at the flashing images on his television.

"Apparently, it's the highest it's ever been," his mum told Dan as she brought him a cup of orange juice and a hay fever tablet, "even with this, I wouldn't go outside."

Dan sighed, he wished he could explore the world more, but his stupid allergies had to block his path. He placed the pill on his tongue and took a swig of juice, swallowing loudly. It left a bitter aftertaste that soon disappeared from another sip of juice.

"Isn't that Phil coming 'round today?" His father said, in which he was right, Phil was visiting today. But he'd have to decline if it involved the outside, he didn't want to supposedly 'cry' in public every time he blinked.

He heard the doorbell, quickly running from his current position on the floor towards the source. He was met with a smiling boy with ebony hair and sparkling blue eyes.

"Hey Dan!" He grinned, showing off his white teeth. Dan sneezed, Phil instantly reacting as his hand reached out to hand Dan a soft tissue. "I'll come in." Phil wandered into the Howell household, taking off his trainers as Dan blew his nose.

"We can't go out, Phil. Not today." Dan sighed, leading Phil into the living room. "We can play Mario Kart though."

"Actually, I have a better idea."

"What do you mean, 'better idea'?" Dan looked at Phil, confusion plastered across his face.

"It's about the meadow." The meadow was a place that was clean of litter and perfect for any aesthetic photo. It wasn't like Hyde Park - which was loud and crowded - neither like something from the Lord Of The Rings - as their village was not placed in the middle of nowhere. The meadow - as Dan and Phil like to call it - was a field just of the outskirts of town, where people wouldn't go to play football and wreck its green grass, neither to engrave initials on the ancient oak trees. You could just sit there and admire the perfect view, have picnics in the sun, and roll down the small hills dotted around, surrounded by blooming daisies. They did all of that, until Dan's parents noticed the symptoms of hay fever affecting Dan. Now, they could only visit in the winter or when there is no 'pollen watch' on the local news.

"That's what I'm trying to avoid Phil!" Dan stated, he pointed at his nose, "this is what's stopping me." He exhaled in disappointment, "If it was winter, I'd happily accept your request; but now, I just can't."

"Oh, we're not going to the meadow."

"Pardon?" Dan chuckled to himself, "how does this idea of yours relate to the meadow then?" Phil thought hard for a second, then began to stand up.

"Wait here."

"It's my house, where else am I expected to go?"

Phil closed the door and ran down the road. He felt his back pocket, which had around £30 pocket money inside. 'That should be enough,' he thought to himself.

He entered B&Q, speed-walking towards the paint area. 'Dan has a spare room that no one really uses,' he remembered, 'with permission, I can move the smaller bed out and into a separate room, paint the walls and find some green rugs.'

"Anything I can help you with, sir?" A lady asked,

"Oh yes, have you got any paint that can be used to paint detail onto walls?"

"Oh yes, we do." She guided him towards the long aisle of paint, varying in shades. "May I ask why you would like this?"

"My friend has hay fever and I want to let him have the outside in his home."

"So I'm guessing you'd want green rug as well?" Phil nodded in response, she let him pick out the shades he wanted - which was a big can of green and blue and some smaller cans of white, other shades of green and blue, and some yellow. She led him towards an aisle with a variety of pastel rug, pointing him in the direction of the green ones. He nodded her a 'thank you' and selected the one that resembled the one in the meadow.

He paid the price - which was reasonably cheap - and carried bags of DIY things back to Dan's house. His parents let him in silently, offering to lay out newspaper and move pieces of furniture (in which they did). The room was already white, so a layer of white paint was not needed.

Phil was lucky that he was good with a paintbrush, passing art with an A* back in Year 9. It felt good to have a brush back in his grasp, sweeping the paint over the walls like it was a broom. He was listening to the radio, which was playing This Girl. This would be a popular song for him and Dan to dance to at parties, and was destined to be played at prom soon.

It took a while, but soon the room had been transformed into a sunny memory. It wasn't the best resemblance to the sunny meadow, but gosh did it feel like he was outside again.

After laying down the green rug and scattering some loose daisies from their front garden, it was finished. Phil brought some extra clothes from home to change into during the day, ready for this one moment.

"Dan!" He shouted down the stairs, causing a sluggish Dan to stumble up to the spare room.

"What is it, Phil?" He grumbled,

"Ok," Phil cleared his throat, "I know your not in the best of moods right now, but I'd wanted to do this for a while now. The only problem was that I never knew when the right time was to do so. It was when you said the same thing you'd always say when it was hay fever season I knew it was time. So, here you go."

Phil stepped back, letting Dan walk in and jump from shock. But it was a surprised shock, at least. The room was an exact replica of the meadow in Dan's eyes, looking like it would stretch back so they could explore more. Knowing that Phil did all this for him made Dan's itchy eyes water.

"P-P-Phil...it-it's..."

"Oh god, your eyes are watering!" Phil rushed around, looking for the source. "Where's the open window?"

"Phil! It's not my hay fever!" Dan laughed as he watched Phil rush around the room like a mad man. "I love it."

Phil stopped suddenly, smiling. He sat down and grinned, Dan following in suit. They're eyes met, Dan's hazel staring deeply into Phil's turquoise. Dan's head relaxed on Phil's shoulder, his arms wrapping around Phil's torso. Phil then knew he'd done right.

This Girl started playing again on the radio, Dan chuckled as Phil mimed the trumpet in the song. Dan pretended to be a DJ, sitting up straight with his legs crossed. The boys soon bursted into a long period of laughter after the instrumental ended, causing them to roll about on the green rug in a giggling fit.

After the song ended, Dan's mum brought them up a cup of fresh lemonade, which they drank as the sun set outside.

"Wow, Phil." Dan smiled, looking at Phil. "This was an amazing day."

"I wanted to see you smile, that's all."

"But why did you do this to me? Why make me feel special?"

"Because you are, Dan."

Dan squeezed Phil, droplets of water running down his cheeks. They both smiled as Phil joined in with the hug. He pecked Dan on the top of his head, making Dan blush. He stared into Phil's eyes, and connected his lips with Phil's.

Phil was shocked at first, not knowing how to react. Well, he thought, if he likes me back, why shouldn't I kiss him?

He leant closer, his arms wrapping around Dan's waist. He could hear the door open silently, knowing Dan's parents were looking at what was happening. He didn't let them distract him and Dan, who was giggling at the time. Out the corner of his eye though, Phil could see Dan's parents smiling as they backed away, at least they were happy for their son. Dan stopped, pulling away and grinning. They both wiped away a small string of saliva from the pull-away, laughing at each other.

"Thank you Phil," Dan spoke up,

"For what?" Phil questioned,

"Being my sun." Dan said, making Phil blush.

"Well, thank you for being my moon." He pointed at the moon in the open window, wrapping his arm and letting Dan - once again - lean on his shoulder.

Yes, it was Pollen Season, but at least someone could think outside the box for once.
