The Recur
"Wow."
The others were soon to join him, shrunk to his size now. The door closed behind the last to leave, Jay, with a loud creak. The son of Jafar turned to look back at the small door, frowning when it was only a door. Nothing else. Like it led to no where.
He opened his mouth to ask one of the many question jumbling through his head, but never got the chance. He was too enchanted by the wonders of Wonderland as he followed behind everyone else. Harry stood ahead of all of them, leading the way down the stone steps to the gardens.
Harry's hand shot out in front of the boy, and Jay glared at him, immediately assuming he was gonna try something sneaky. He couldn't have been more wrong. A bewildered look lit up on Jay's face as a green spotted pig went running passed them at full speed, squealing. Jay watched it go, a hand flying up to cover his forehead. This was all so crazy, it was insane, it was-
"Mad," Harry muttered like he could read the boys thought. Jay looked at the pirate with furrowed eyebrows, "don't worry, they're all mad here." He barred a smile at them, flashing his pearly teeth. Jay could only assume when he said 'they're all mad here' Harry was including himself in that proclamation. Jay wouldn't doubt it.
A rocking horse flew passed them. And not like someone had thrown it. Like a tiny live horse, with rockers on it's feet and clear wings like a fly on it's back, fluttered passed them. "Whoa," Carlos muttered, reaching out to touch it.
Evie squealed when the buzzing filled her ears, swatting at the strange creature until it left. Evie slowly turned to see Carlos glaring at her for scaring it off. She puffed up her chest, quickly regaining her composure and strutting ahead like nothing happened.
Mal's Hazel eyes were wide as she took in the huge flowers. She would even dare to say the plants had faces, but that was ridiculous. That was impossible.
And she would continue to think so, until one bent down with narrowed eyes, "what a curious thing." Mal screamed, jumping back from the talking plant, a hand over her racing heart.
"Mal, what is it?" Ben was quick to her aid, an arm around her waist and pulling her back into his chest. She shook her head rapidly, pointing a finger up at the talking plant.
"Greta," Harry stepped forward with a charming smirk, bowing slightly to the pink petaled flower.
"Harry Hook!" She gushed, sounding more like an old lady than anything else. "You're back. It's been an age."
"Yes, it has," Harry removed his hat, brushing down his wild Charcoal locks. "I was wondering, could you tell me were Alison is? Hm?"
"Alison?" The flower Harry called Greta, straightened out and looked around the garden. "Alison Hatter? Where has she run off to now?"
Uma stepped forward cautiously, starring at the flower like it might attack at any moment. "Alison?" She echoed just the same, though the question was directed more to Harry while Greta's had been more to herself. "Who's Alison?"
"The daughter of Alice and the Mad Hatter, of course," He turned to address his Captain, speaking as though the answer should've been obvious. "She's going to take us to the Red Castle."
"Where Queen Heart is, right?" Ben asked, and Harry nodded.
"Harry?" A feminine voice came from behind them and Harry was quick to turn.
There stood a girl with a bundle of blonde waves, falling down over her shoulders and a sparkling smile twisting at her pink lips. She sported a light blue dress and black and white striped leggings.
Harry's own lips twisted into a charming smile once more, "Alison."
"Harry Hook!" She squealed, lurching herself at him and wrapping her arms around his neck. With one hand placed on her back, he raised her off the ground and spun her in a hug. She was giggling madly when he let her down, "What are you doing here?" She shoved his shoulder in a playful way, looking more than pleased to see the Pirate again.
"I've come to pay yer sister a visit," he bounced his eyebrows suggestively in a way he knew would have Alison squirming in her spot.
She crossed her arms with narrowed blue eyes, "Arty. It's always Arty with you, isn't it?"
Harry shrugged shamelessly, "always will be, darlin'."
Alison peeked around Harry to the others he had brought with him, her eyes wide with curiosity, "Who are you? You don't look like flowers," She puffed out her bottom lip, going over to Carlos and picking up his arm. "What kind of petals are these?"
"They're called arms," Carlos snatched his arm back from the over curious girl, but she merely giggled, clapping her hands delightedly.
"Oh, a boy. Goodie," her blonde waves swarm around her pale features as she looked around the others. "Oh, I know you," she pointed out a stern finger at King Ben, her eyes narrowed playfully. "You're the King of Auradon, my sister won't be pleased to see you." She sung the last vowel of the last word.
Ben's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "your sister? Who's your sister?"
"Artemis," Harry was the one to answer, his arms held comfortably out on either side of him. "Queen Heart. That's who ya wanted to see, yeah?"
"Wait, Queen Hearts your sister?" Jay asked in disbelief, his muscular arms crossed tightly over his chest. Alison nodded daintily, twirling the skirt of her baby blue dress.
"I thought Queen Heart was the daughter of you know," Mal shrugged. "The Red Queen."
Mal didn't understand what was so funny about her assumption, she was sure everyone else had assumed the same. But, none the less Alison broke into a fit of giggles, dropping to her bum on the ground and clutching at her stomach. She snorted, kicking out her legs in a fit.
Mal immediately got defensive, her arms crossed, "What's so funny?"
"Oh, I was just-" She broke off into short, choppy yips of laughter. "I was just picturing..." She took a breath to calm herself enough to finish her sentence. "Someone actually wanting to be with the Red Queen. I mean, her head was..." She mocked the noise you heard when filling up a balloon and she held up her hands by her head as her eyes went wide. She broke into a fit of giggles once more.
Harry rolled her eyes at her childishness and stepped over her out stretched legs, "Queen Hearts real name is Artemis Hatter. Alison's older sister." Alison, who had calmed down enough to think straight, gave a short, tight nod.
"Why wouldn't she want to see me?" Ben asked, over the initial shock of the new information.
Alison hoped to her feet, dusting off the back of her dress, "Because she's gone mad."
"Of course she's mad," Harry threw in his two cents. "It's what makes her, her."
Alison's eyes widened in a look of true fear, "No, she's Red Queen mad," She nodded rapidly, as her eyes moved from one person to the next.
Harry's eyebrows furrowed, "She's not evil, Alison."
"But, if she was she might be," Alison whirled on him, her nose turned up to him. "And if she was so, she would be."
Jay blinked rapidly, shaking his head in utter confusion, 'What?' He mouthed to Carlos, his shorter friend simply shook his head, just as confused as he was.
Alison rolled her eyes and stomped her foot like a child throwing a temper tantrum, "Abby will better explain. She'll tell you what's been going on. Come on," She nodded for the others to follow and with her dress gathered up in her hands she led the way to Abby.
They walked through the garden in silence, the flowers standing high above them all and the trees like skyscrapers. The green grass soon faded into muddy dirt as the flowery scenery they were once surrounded with was now tall Mushrooms standing above them like natural umbrellas.
Ben jogged to catch up with Harry and Alison who were leading the large group, "Um, who's Abby?" Ben asked, slowing down to long strides when he caught up with the Pirate and Alice's daughter.
"The wise and all knowing, here in Wonderland," Alison told him like a mother would tell her child a fairy tale of an all powerful wizard. Ben frowned in thought, who was this Abby? And why was Alison and Harry so sure that she would have all the answers?
A blue fog filled the garden, settling around their legs and blocking them from seeing their own two feet. Evie looked down at the mist in distaste and then around at the dark turn the garden took. Something in the distance caught her eyes, "Is that..." She pursed her lips, catching a bubble on her hand. "A bubble." As soon as the words left her lips, it popped causing her to flinch.
Harry smirked, his lips tilting up into a wicked grin as he caught a bubble on his fingertips - instead of popping like it did for Evie he pushed it back up, letting it continue on it's steady journey through the garden. "We're close."
Just ahead of them was a girl with perfect chocolate waves that fell down her back in bundles. She twirled around on the mushroom top, causing the black skirt of her dress to sway around her long legs with every move she made. The bubble wand she held in her hand was long and a dark navy blue, blowing out herds of every size bubble.
She stopped when she saw Alison and Harry approaching her, and the others were beginning to see how close Harry was to those in Wonderland - as the third person they stumbled upon lit up at the sight of him. "Harry," She breathed out, blowing into the wand. A million minuscule bubbles poured out and danced around the Pirate.
The son of Captain Hook waved a hand, pushing the bubbles from his face, "Abby," he bowed to the brunette. A wide smile took over her face and she delicately took the skirt of her dress in her fingers tips and knelt to him with a mad giggle.
Alison rolled her eyes at the two of them, "Abby," She broke in and Abby blinked innocently at the blonde. "Tell them about the Prophecy." Alison gestured out to the others that were with her and Harry.
Abby pushed up on her toes from her spot on her mushroom to peek around Alison and Harry, "Who are you?"
Uma took a small step forward, quirking an eyebrow at her, "Abby?"
"You are not Abby, I am." Abby looked deeply offended, a hand touching her chest. "I asked who are you?"
Uma looked over at Harry, her face silently asking 'is she serious', Harry simply shrugged. "Uma," She told the dark haired girl.
Abby narrowed her eyes, leaning in like she was assessing her whole being, "Maybe."
"Maybe?" Uma scoffed, her eyebrows shooting up in disbelief. "I think I know who I am."
"Yes, you should. Stupid girl," Abby's lips turned up in distaste and Mal's jaw dropped, a strangled chuckle leaving her lips. She was beginning to like this girl.
"What'd you just say to me?" Uma lurched forward, pointing at herself. She didn't get very far, because Harry stuck an arm out to hold her back from attacking the girl on the mushroom.
Abby giggled, spinning and letting much larger bubbles form around her bubble wand. "You want to know about Artemis and Cheney, yes?"
Ben was the one to step forward, "Yes," He nodded. "Alison said she wasn't the same. That she was like the Red Queen."
"Ah, yes," Abby dropped into a sitting position before them, her black and blue dress pooling around her. She sighed, "The recur. Once upon a time there was a Hatter and a girl," She took the bubble wand in her hand and drew a picture in the air.
They were shocked when things actually began to form from the action. A Top Hat and a stick figure with a dress. Mal and Evie shared a confused look, but stayed silent, watching in quiet awe of the story being told.
"And from them bore a girl who would soon take the throne of Wonderland," She blew the crown shaped bubble at them and Ben turned to watch it float away. "But, a dark shadow lay across her fate. A dark shadow with purple eyes and killer claws."
Harry frowned at the cat face, a purple hue around the bubble. "Cheney?" He asked, looking up at Abby and then over at Alison. The blonde silently nodded. Harry's brow furrowed as he turned his attention back to Abby, this couldn't be good.
"And from the sidelines he runs the show, turning our white angel," She was quick to sculpt an Angel out of the bubble, only to slash her wand through it and Harry watched as it turned into a heart with Devil Horns. "Into the Red Queen of Wonderland," the bubble popped with the echoing sound of Queen Hearts voice screeching 'Off with his head'!
The garden seemed much darker and colder than it originally was. Evie hugged herself uncomfortably, looking over at Jay and Carlos and then over at Mal. She could tell by the looks on their face they were thinking the exact same thing she was. Maybe coming to Wonderland was a mistake.
Ben obviously didn't think so, "there's got to be a way to fix it. She's not really evil," He pointed out what was obvious. If he understood what this girl was trying to tell him. Queen Heart wasn't as evil and cruel as everyone said she was, she was just under the wrong influence. It wasn't her fault. "She just needs someone to show her the right way."
Abby smiled, pointing a delicate finger at him, "Exactly." She pushed up, turning on her toes and holding out her bubble wand as she did. Slowly a bubble ring formed around her. "On the night of her 17th year she'll be greeted with true loves kiss," She bent down to blow at the ring around her and from it formed a pair of lips flying out to pop in Harry's face.
He flinched, waving the soap away. "Sorry, darlin, I'm not anyone's true love." He denied, shaking his head.
Abby didn't say anything, the only evidence of her contradicting his statement was the secret smile on her cherry lips. "And the girl with purple hair will join her on the battle front to defeat the malicious cat once and for all. And Wonderland will be saved." She slashed her hand through the ring and it popped in various places, like fireworks.
"Purple hair," Mal whispered, touching her magenta locks. She looked up at Abby with a question on her plump lips, but she never got to ask it.
For instead came the sound of a million footsteps at once, marching, charging. Abby's eyes widened and was quick to meld into the garden and out of sight. The only evidence she was ever there in the first place was the navy bubble wand sitting haphazardly on the mushroom top. A ferocious beast broke through the flowers, trampling everything in his path. He had a coat the color of the moon at night with midnight spots decorating the white. His eyes were beady and his snarl was chilling. His lips pulled back in an earth rattling roar, revealing his razor sharp teeth and venomous saliva dripped from his mouth.
"Bandersnatch!" Alison's fearful words reached the others ears as she reached out to grip at Harry's sleeve.
"Run." Was all Harry needed to say before they took off running through the Garden's trying desperately to escape the dreadful creature on their heels.
"What is that!?" Carlos screeched his voice raising seven octaves as he struggled to outrun the beast. He looked back, soon regretting the action as the creature, that Alison called a Bandersnatch, lunged at him. Rows and rows of men followed along side the beast in the official uniform of Queen Hearts army.
He screamed like a frightened child in the night as he was wrapped up in a net and pulled back into the army.
"Carlos!" Evie called back to her captured friend, her eyes wide.
Jay was quick to run up to her, his arm going around her to urge her along, "No time, Evie." He turned her to run her along only for the both of them to run right into one of the Jack's of Hearts. Evie stared up at him wide eyed and she and Jay were next to be wrapped up in the netting and captured.
Mal watched in horror as her friends were taken captive, but with the Bandersnatch and a million men on her tail she couldn't stop to try and help. She wouldn't be any help to them if she was captured as well. She didn't know where anyone was anymore, she was on her own with a beast that would no doubt kill her if it caught her, quick on her steps.
She didn't think it could get any worse. She was soon proven wrong when she came up to a dead end. She slammed against the rocky side, desperately trying to crawl and climb to the top. But, it was no use. She spun around, pressing her back into the mountain side, trying to make herself as small as possible.
The Bandersnatch came to a halt just in front of her, it's enormous claws kicking up dirt at the action. Mal felt her chest rise and fall rapidly in fear, her heart feeling like it would burst out of her chest at any moment.
It was taunting her, like a predator would it's prey. And there was nothing she could do about it, except stand there and wait for her end. It let out a ferocious cry, blowing her hair back with a mighty gust and she cringed back into the wall.
"Mal, run!" She blinked at the voice, looking up to see Harry charging at the beast. She looked around desperately trying to find a way to disappear, but she was trapped.
Harry launched himself off a mushroom top and onto the Bandersnatch's head. His boot's landed heavily and he let out a loud cackle. He stabbed his hook into it's beady black eyes and claimed it as his prize.
The beast cried out in pain, it's large paws coming up to cup his own face. The action caused it's claws to carve into Harry's exposed bicep. He cried out in pain, grabbing at the stinging skin. When he pulled his fingers back he could see the red blood painting his fingers tips, dripping from the three long, jagged claw marks on his arm.
Pushing the pain aside, he jumped from it's cranium and landed heavily in front of the purple haired girl who stared up at him with wide Hazel eyes. "Run," he held out a hand, and without a second thought she took it allowing him to drag her along as they made a break for it through the mushrooms.
