Smelly Teapots
Claire sat with her head in her hands on her bed in her and Morgan's dorm room. Morgan tried to sit next to her, but Claire would swat her away every time she tried. Claire didn't seem to be in a very talkative mood. The letter got to her, and Morgan didn't know how to help her.
"C, please just talk to me. It'll help. I'm sure it will. Evie said that a way to a girl's heart is to bring her a box of chocolates and flowers, but I don't think she meant it in this scenario," Morgan says, mostly thinking aloud.
"I'm fine, Morgan," Claire says through her hands, so it was mostly muffled.
Morgan puts an arm across her stomach and a hand on top of her forehead as she paced the room, mumbling nonsense to herself. She said things like "Mad Hatter's daughter", "Cheshire Cat's daughter", "Odd beginnings." Her mind just wasn't in sync with the way she was acting.
After minutes of Morgan's annoying pacing, Claire speaks up again and looks up at Morgan who looked ruffled.
"I wish I could just disappear..." Claire said as her body starts to shimmer. Morgan looks towards her just as she disappears and leaves just a dent in the bed from where she is sitting. Morgan frowns and walks out of the room, still muttering to herself. If Claire wanted to be alone, she could be.
Claire looked down at her hands and realized what she had done. When she got emotional it seemed she didn't have much control over her powers. Maybe her mom could teach her how to control that...
Her mom...
Claire lies back in the bed, lost in thought. So distracted, she didn't even hear the door open again. Walking through the door was Heather Heart. Heather closes the door softly as she walks in and looks around, seeing an empty room.
"Cat?" Heather questions as she sees the dent in the bed. Claire sits up and looks at her, though Heather couldn't actually see her.
Claire closes her eyes and opens them again and she reappears, beginning from her feet and shimmering all the way up to her head so she is visible again. Heather jumps back a bit, not realizing that she was actually there.
"What do you want--Wait, what are you wearing?" Claire's face contorts from anger to confusion as she sees what Heather had on.
Heather had her long curly blonde hair tied up into a messy bun, with strands of hair flying into her face. Heather's normally put together appearance was now a dark red and black romper that had a green belt wrapped around her waist and a black and blue back pack in her hands. Her wedged boots were an off-white and came up to her shins. This was a very disturbing look for Heather, even on Claire's standards.
"Oh this? I was in a hurry. Hey, a girl can't look pretty all the time. A girl's gotta have a dark side," Heather smirks as she takes a strand of hair and pulls it behind her ear.
"For the Queen of Heart's daughter, having a dark side is normal. But this is just ridiculous." Claire then adds, "I like it."
Heather does a little twirl and Claire frowns again, realizing her mistake of complimenting Heather. Heather rolls her eyes and puts a hand up to her chest, "Well let's go!"
Claire cocks her head to the side and questions what Heather meant.
"We are going to Wonderland aren't we?" Heather gestures to the sky out the window. Claire looks towards the sky and only sees clouds, getting the fact that she was trying to gesture to Wonderland though.
"You're kidding, right?" Claire stands up and looks back towards Heather.
"Course not. You need to go help your mom--" Claire cuts her off quickly.
"Mhmm, help her out of whatever mess your mother put her in."
Heather ignores her and continues, "And I need to get back home. I miss my luxury room and castle." Heather makes a pouty face and Claire puts a hand up to her forehead, shaking her head.
Heather puts her hands on her hips and tries to stare Claire down, "You got the letter. This is basically our invitation back home! You want to go home, I want to go home, the others apparently don't want to go home! Let's work together on this!"
Claire gives Heather a deadly glare, causing Heather to take her own stare back.
"What do you get out of this?"
"I thought I already went through this, Cat," Heather giggles before continuing. "I want my things back. Here I only get the necessities of life, I need a whole lot more than that. I am a princess."
"Not in that outfit you aren't," Claire walks over to Will's makeshift desk in the dorm and looks through his papers that he had left from the day before.
Heather giggles at Claire's 'joke' and walks over and stands next to her, "This is our chance. Pack your bags and let's go."
Claire looks towards her, cocking her eyebrow, "And how in the Hatter's head are we even going to get there? It's a floating island in the sky."
Heather flips her imaginary hair since it was tied up into a bun, "I have my ways."
Claire shakes her head and grabs her book bag and her phone, not even bothering to leave a note for Morgan that she had left.
"If this ends badly, I blame you," Claire points a finger in Heather's face as they both walk out of the room and head down the hall.
By now, it was already dark outside so they might leave and go undetected. Claire and Heather snuck out of the hallway and out the front door, making it to the front of the school. They headed towards the driveway and Claire waited there for a moment, expecting Heather was going to steal a ride on one of the limousines. Heather kept on walking down the road, and Claire now followed her curiously.
"Where exactly are we going?" Claire whispers to her as she catches up and walks side by side with her. Claire's coat brushed up some of the dust from the ground as she ran up to Heather. There was complete silence out on the road and they could only hear their footsteps and saw only the lights from the school behind them.
"To the bridge," Heather said as if it was obvious.
They kept on walking along the road, with Claire getting curiouser and curiouser as they kept on.
Morgan paced in the boys' dorms, muttering to herself about how she was wrong to snap at Claire like she did and thought she was going absolutely insane again. Will sat on the couch, staring at Morgan as she paced the room. Aaron was on the opposite side of the room, holding his book above his face as he lay down on his bed, reading.
"Morgan, try to calm down. You've been at it for nearly a half an hour," Will sighs.
Morgan stops and throws her hands up in the air as she looks at Will, "You must be as mad as me if you think I can just calm down! She won't even talk to me now! Who am I supposed to talk to if she isn't talking to me?!"
Will opens his mouth to start naming the people she could talk to, and actually was talking to now, but closes it abruptly as she starts pacing again. Aaron in the back drops his book on his face as he tries to flip a page and Will turns and laughs at him. Morgan sits down next to Will on the couch abruptly, nearly pushing Will off all together. Will looks towards Morgan and frowns, realizing how much this actually affected her.
"She'll be fine. You know Claire, she can jump back from legitimately anything," Will says, trying his best to be as comforting as possible.
Morgan puts her head in her hands, "This isn't the same thing, Will. This is about her mom--" Morgan is cut off by the door swinging open. Jay is at the door looking as if he had run all the way to their dorm, which he had.
"Jay?" Aaron questions as he sits up, rubbing his nose.
Heather stops at the end of the street and they look over the water and the Isle of the Lost. Claire, stopping just behind her, sighs as she looks over at the Isle.
"Who could imagine how horrible it is over there?" Claire continues, "Oh wait, I'm sure my mother can since she is currently in trouble under your mother's control!"
Heather ignores her completely and looks up towards the clouds, supposedly staring up towards the floating island. Claire crosses her arms, looking at Heather, "So how are we going to get to the Island?"
Heather turns to Claire and spins her backpack around from her back so she is holding it in her hand. She unzips her backpack and takes out a teapot and two plastic cups. The teapot had green and purple designs all connecting into a flower in the center of the teapot and had a extremely long spout that had a curve in the middle, making it seem like it would never be able to pour anything out.
Heather takes the lid off the teapot and an aroma smelling like flowers and poisoned, unripened apples flooded out, all at the same time. Claire pinches her nose with her fingers and coughs. Claire raises her eyebrows at Heather as the aroma fills her senses.
"Is that what I think it is?" Claire questions, still pinching her nose.
"If you mean the Mad Hatter's shapeshifting tea, then yes."
Claire keeps her nose pinched and is impressed by how the smell didn't affect Heather as much as it did her. Heather looks at Claire and realizes this. Heather laughs, "Don't worry, I think I already threw up in my mouth."
Claire's eyebrows crease together, thinking about how gross that was. "Where did you even get it?" Heather merely shrugs.
"I have my ways, you have yours. Let's get this over with," Heather says as she pours the dark green liquid into the two plastic cups. She fills them up to the brim and hands one cup to Claire while she holds the other in her hand, closing her eyes, preparing for the grossness.
Claire looks down at it, unpinching her nose and then looks back at Heather who was already trying to down the liquid. Claire sighs and presses the cup up to her lips. The cold liquid touches her tongue but turns boiling hot as she swallows it. It tasted as worse as it smelled, like moldy apples and old milk, but even worse than they could imagine. Claire thought about what this was for to get herself to swallow it. All she had to do was down the grossness and she would be able to save her mother.
Claire opens her eyes and realizes that she had finished the liquid. Her lips were chapped as she brought the cup away from her lips. Claire looks towards Heather and she was holding a hand over her mouth and stomach, looking like she was going to be sick. Heather takes her hand away from her mouth and breathes, trying to compose herself the slightest bit.
"Try to clear your mind, only think about something that can fly--" Heather says before groaning and pressing her hand to her mouth again.
Claire sighs as the liquid makes her stomach turn, but she focuses on the one thing she could imagine that could fly. The bird that sent her the letter from earlier today, that was the bird that would lead her to her mother so she would use it's form to reach Wonderland. As she thought about the dark crow, her stomach started churning even more.
"It's not working!" Claire says to Heather. Heather fell to her knees, clenching her clothing in her fist over her stomach, trying not to fall ill.
Claire shut her eyes, trying to think about the bird harder, but couldn't get past the fact the liquid wasn't settling properly. Claire takes a step back and falls backwards onto the ground and the burning in her stomach slowly started to fade. She opened her eyes again and felt as if the sky was getting larger, but at the same time she could see every small speck so much clearer. Sitting up, Claire could see why she saw things so much differently. She brought her hands up to her face and realized that they were no longer hands... In their place were black, glossy wings.
Claire stood up quickly and realized her entire form was now a ominous crow with a red splotch on the side of it's wing. Claire looks over to Heather and sees a white dove with a similar red splotch on it's wing, but it is in the shape of a heart rather than whatever was on the crow's.
Heather, the dove, takes a mini bow and Claire mentally rolls her eyes. Sure it worked, but they actually have to get there first before she thanks her, she thought to herself. Heather takes her wing and points towards the sky. Claire, the crow, nods and they both erupt into the sky, both of them flapping their wings violently.
Heather swoops down and picks up her backpack with her feet, which was thankfully much lighter now without the teapot and cups inside of it. Claire does the same and picks up her book bag. The bag may have been heavier than Heather's, but it was much easier since the crow she chose was so much larger than the dove. They swoop up towards the sky with Wonderland now in their sights.
The island's bottom was a rigid triangle-like shape that had roots stretching out from underneath it, and smaller dirt islands surrounding it. Some of which were big enough to live on, while others were too small and were merely covered in dirt and grass. Claire swooped higher up and got a good look at Wonderland for the first time from this angle.
Wonderland was decked in trees of every color and the Queen's castle in the very middle, shaped as a red and white chess board. The white side belonged to the White Queen's and the red side, of course, belonged to The Queen of Hearts. The small towns of people were shaped in strange formations and some even turned upside down. The entrance to Wonderland was facing where Auradon prep would have been located, with it's shining black gates held closed shut with a heart shaped lock to keep them closed. Even though it was already pitch black outside, the lights from all the buildings made all of Wonderland glow like a nightlight. The light didn't reach Auradon for some reason that was illusive to Claire. Wonderland used to be everything to her, and then Auradon because even more than that. Seeing it like this, she didn't know which was better.
Claire had to find her mother. She has to help her.
