Chapter Two

Mary's POV (Yeah, you read that right)

I had gotten out of bed and was headed downstairs to make breakfast when I heard the baby crying from the guest room. I walked into the room. Her mother- it hit me that I didn't know either of their names- was awake and looked exhausted and close to tears. I definitely remembered that feeling with Wally. I walked over.

"Ah, sh**, she woke you up, didn't she? I'm so sorry! I swear, I just fed her like fifteen minutes ago!"

I chuckled. "She didn't wake me. I have to wake up early if I'm going to have enough food to feed Wally." The girl cracked a smile. "How about you go back to sleep, and I'll take her. You could definitely use the sleep."

"Izza isn't usually this fussy. I guess it's the weather."

"Izza?"

"I can't believe I forgot to tell you our names! Why didn't you say anything?"

"You two needed some good sleep fast. We figured that it would be easier to ask later."

"Well, I'm Artemis Crock, and my daughter's name is Isabelle. Or Izza, Izzy, Belle, or Bella. Any variant works."

"That will probably be important information," I said, picking up the baby. Artemis still looked skeptical of me, but I met eyes with her and she nodded, relaxing. She was asleep by the time I got to the door. When I got downstairs I used some formula and made a bottle for Isabelle.

Soon the baby was happily sucking on the bottle. Before long, she was asleep again. I set her on a blanket on the floor, careful not to wake her. I made the breakfast, and soon Rudolph came downstairs. "Good morning, Mary." He kissed the top of my head.

"Morning."

He looked over at Isabelle, shaking his head. "Count on Wally to bring home strangers. Though she's a cute baby, so I suppose an exception can be made."

I laughed. "Agreed."

"Where's her mother?"

"Sleeping. I took over for her. Figured she could use the sleep."

"Probably."

"I SMELL FOOD!" Wally's voice called from the top of the stairs. He suddenly appeared in front of me. The baby started to cry. Rudy and I gave Wally a pointed look.

"Oops," He said, speeding over to her. He picked her up, shushing her. She calmed down. Wally smiled. He carried the baby over, settling into a chair. "What's her name?"

"Isabelle, according to her mother."

"And her name is..."

"Artemis," I grinned.

"Does someone have a crush?" Rudy teased.

Wally's face turned red. "No! I just met her! She's pretty, though."

"So that's why you brought home some random person," I said.

"I mean, uh, she also has a baby, and they were freezing. It was only decent."

"Uh-huh."

"Shut up!"

I was about to tell him off when a girl's voice called, "Shut up about what?"

I turned to see Artemis. I hadn't been able to recognize her voice when it wasn't croaky and tired.

"Nothing!" Wally exclaimed. Artemis arched an eyebrow, but simply took Isabelle from him.

"Thanks for your hospitality, guys. But I really should go. I don't wanna impose on you."

"You're not imposing on anyone, Sweetheart. You're our guest for at least the rest of the week. The weather is terrible." I told her with a smile.

"Thank you, Mrs. West. I don't know how I'll be able to pay you back for this."

"There's no need to."

"But there is. I can't just stay here and not do anything."

"Ok, how's this? You help out around the house, and we'll consider it as payment for your room and board, alright?"

She nodded. "Alright. Thank you."

"You're welcome, Sweetheart."
