Artemis groaned. She tightened her blanket cocoon more snugly around her, trying to get back to sleep. But the sound of crying pulled her to her feet. She tugged her hair up into a ponytail as she walked out of the room.
She walked downstairs. She smiled at Wally, who was attempting to calm Isabelle. He was failing miserably. "I've got her," Artemis assured him, taking her daughter out of his arms. The baby's cries quickly died down now that her mother was holding her.
"Artemis, you're supposed to be sleeping!" Wally objected.
"I know, I know. And I was. But then my mom radar went off." She laughed.
Isabelle started fussing again. Artemis rolled her eyes. "Oh, you're hungry, are you?" She looked to Wally. "I'm gonna take her upstairs. You have fun with your friends or whatever. Thanks for letting me get some sleep. I needed it."
"No problem. Izza is amazing. Aren't you baby?" He cooed.
Isabelle gave him a smile.
"Oh, Artemis, your mom called while you were sleeping. She said it was something important."
"Oh, thanks!"
"Yeah, I'll get Mom's phone for you. Just a sec." He ran off. Artemis noticed how fast he was. Jeez. This kid had better be on the track team.
Wally returned a minute later with his mom's phone, which he handed to Artemis. She thanked him and headed back upstairs, settling back into the bed. She fed Isabelle, and called her mother.
"Artemis?" Paula questioned.
"Yeah, it's me. What's up?"
"So, your dad and I are separating."
"What?" Artemis almost dropped the phone in her surprise. But she didn't, luckily. "Really?"
"Really."
"Wow."
"Yeah."
"Well, we've got a strong vocabulary, don't we?" Artemis joked. "And is this like for good?"
"Yeah. Your dad is moving out later tonight."
"Oh, I can help, you, Mom. You shouldn't be doing this yourself!"
"No, sweetie. It's fine, don't worry about me."
"I want to help. I have no reason not to."
"And you have no reason to. Stay with your friends and take care of your daughter."
"But I want to help, Mom. I'm going to help!"
"Fine, but wait a couple weeks until I've got the place set up, ok?"
"Ok. I love you."
"Love you, too."
Artemis reluctantly pressed the red 'end call' button. She wanted to keep talking to her mother, but she didn't know what to say.
She thought about her call with Cam, remembering that she told him that she'd send him pictures of Isabelle. She glanced down at the baby, who had fallen asleep.
She smiled, gently moving the baby off of her and onto the bed. She pulled out the phone, FaceTiming Cameron, who picked up.
"Hey, Arty! What's up?"
"Nothing much."
"It's so good to see you again. It's been forever."
"Yeah. Speaking of which-" She flipped the camera image around so he could see Isabelle.
Cam gasped. "Is that her?"
"No, it's some random baby," Artemis snapped sarcastically, making Cam laugh.
"She's so cute. Isabelle is her name, right? Oh, god, she's cute."
"Yeah, she gets it from me."
"Oh, shut up," Cam said, smiling. "Now, I'd love to keep talking, but I've got a date to prepare for. Talk to you later?"
"Of course. And don't dress like a hobo!"
Cam laughed and hung up.
Artemis grinned, closing her eyes. Might as well catch a few more z's while she could.
