CHAPTER 1.B: Not So Long Ago

I yelled at the top of my lungs, pulling his ear mercilessly. It was almost like taking down a burglar in a supermarket. Hovering over him, he shrieked of pain as he held tightly to my working arm.

"I have nothing to say to you, Nathan. Last time I checked, it's unethical and not to mention, downright disrespectful to read someone else's journal," I said, attempting to throw a punch with my fists clenched tightly. I took my journal and hid it inside the drawer near my dresser.

"Now, get out, Nate! You have no business here," I added. As I brushed off the dust in my hair, out of no where, he pushed me playfully like a rowdy boy in his child-like world.

It hurt like hell.

My mirror broke into tiny little pieces spread all over my room, some barely seen. Looking at the mess he made, he laughed boisterously as he panted for more air to breathe. He clapped hysterically and made funny, short-paced noises like the obnoxious kid he was. After his swift capture of raw entertainment, he thought I needed some fun as well. Dragging me into his rowdy world, Nathan pushed me playfully, that I tripped and fell to the ground. As a result, I landed miraculously over a few centimeters away from the minute splinters of glass.

Having been slightly injured and my room in total catastrophe since that scoundrel arrived, I would expect a stellar, top-shelf apology from him if that was remotely possible. Granting there is even the slightest chance a 'Nathan Trevmore' would gracefully cooperate, I'd be damned.

"What more can you destroy in a day? I give up." Groaning with my head down in pain, I called for a truce. He pulled me up gently, grabbed my waist, and led my eyes to look at what was left of the shattered glass.

I saw the very few, broken pieces barely holding onto its wooden frame, reflecting the iridescent light from the sun outside the window, glistening through my eyes.

Suddenly, the whole room fell silent. Neither of us said a word, nor moved a muscle. I breathed too heavily, dazed by the hammering sounds drilling through my head.

And in just a split second, I heard my heart racing in percussive, stubborn beats. I felt uneasy, but at the same time, calm, and surprisingly at ease. It certainly felt like I was longing for that feeling a long time ago; way back when I hadn't understood the mere concept of love.

Just when I was about to break the silence, he covered my lips with his finger. Quietly, he requested me to keep myself together and swerve the nagging aside as his swift, gentle bodily movements have suggested. Tingling sensations ran through my veins like a one-of-a-kind spark that was impossible to extinguish. An abrupt rush of energy clouded my senses.

My own heart betrayed me.

"My feelings for you have always remained untamed. They surpass all the reasons we are no good for one another. This kind of love defies all the laws the universe claims to impose, as it is as ruthless as me. The kind of love you've yearned, and continue to yearn. The kind of love that consumes you, and sweeps you off your feet. The kind of love I continue to express no matter the distance, no matter the circumstance; in more languages than one," said Nathan, standing very closely to me.

With every minute that passed, the harder it was to pretend to be dumbfounded. My muscles were tightened as if they were paralyzed by his voice, and I was absolutely speechless. I froze in a heartbeat when his trembling hands slowly danced across my skin. Both of us gazed at our broken reflection in the mirror intently. And sure, I loved what I was feeling.

Magical. Heavenly. Surreal.

Until reality had to ruin it for me.

"Ah, I knew I still had it in me. You never could resist my charms. You're so predictable, Carter," he mocked, feeding his ego yet again.

Before I could even begin to express the disgust plastered across my face, my phone rang. It was a call from Professor Brawston himself.
