Hazel's House

As Kipo as the crystal to her ear ('Like a phone?' Luz questioned), her eyes suddenly widened. She wasn't in this room anymore, Luz guessed.

"Dib?" she gasped, and Luz tilted her head.

"Uh, who's Dib?" Luz whispered, leaning over to Kris. "Oh... one of her friends from before. What are they like?... oh, you haven't met... Huh, I'd thought you two had known each other for longer... Wait, you were in a what?! Man, that sounds so cool!"

Luz's voice gradually raised as she talked to Kris, but she only stopped when she watched Hazel turn his head towards them. She gave an awkward wave and a sheepish smile, and turned back to Kris.

"Hey... I'm going to distract Hazel," Luz whispered to Kris. "You go out and try and look around. For what?... Well, anything, I guess. Escape routes, suspicious things, dead bodies, evidence. You know."

Kris, to their credit, did not look the least bit alarm, and they nodded.

"Great." Luz glanced back at Hazel. "Go when I give the symbol... actually, go when you think it's safe, you can do it."

Again, Kris nodded, and Luz decided to keep it at that, stepping away from them... and up to the terrifying rabbit man, staring up into the empty black eye sockets. Hazel stared back.

...Luz decided to talk with Alice instead. It was practically the same thing anyway, a conversation with Alice was a conversation with Hazel. If Luz trusted Hazel a little more, she might've said they were great friends.

Luz was right. Hazel's attention was focused solely on her, and Kris was able to sneak out easily, closing the door softly behind them. They found themselves in another long, dark hallway, with even more of though creepy stuffed animals. Well, 'creepy', Kris thought they were kind of cool, not in the way that they looked, but in the way they seemed to make Kris feel unnerved for some reason.

This was better than any weird, out-of-the-way place in the dark world.

Kris stepped through the hallway, ignoring the feeling of eyes in their back. There didn't seem to be anything in this place, so Kris opened the door at the end of the hallway. It technically might as well, just be a room, it wasn't a very long hallway.

The next room, though... was a far cry from what Kris had seen before. They had to pause, staring at the room stretched open before them.

It was a large room, larger than any other room Kris had seen in this building, and looked like it might have been some sort of shop at one point, but now, it was overgrown with red flowers like weeds, all over the place, and on ever surface. The entire room was a bright red.

Once Kris got over their confusion, they stepped into the room, kneeling to study one of the flowers closely. It was one they didn't know (maybe because they'd never actually cared to listen to their dad when he was talking about flowers), but one they'd seen before, in the area. But in the arena, there had only been one or two, growing in the cracks of the cement in some of the empty cells. Here, it was like a jungle.

Eventually, Kris tore their attention away from the flower to take a closer look around the room.

Hey, look. A door.

"Dib?" Kipo blinked, unable to really believe what she was saying. "You're... but how did you-?!"

"Oh, FINALLY!" Dib shouted, glaring at her with a, frankly unfair, amount of aggression. "How did it take THAT LONG for you to finally answer our call?!"

"..." Kipo didn't really know how to respond to that. "I was... asleep."

Well, that seemed to throw Dib for a loop. "You were what?"

"It probably doesn't matter, I'm fine now," Kipo said quickly, though his question didn't really seem to be one of concern. "I think there are more important things to worry about. Like... how exactly did you call me? This has never worked like that before..."

Dib huffed, leaning back and crossing his arms. He was sitting cross legged, with a crystal identical to Kipo's in his lap. "Well, according to Six, it's because each of the crystals are... catalysts for a specific frequency of energy in the air that technically exists on another plane of existence, and a powerful enough person can connect with that energy and 'travel through it', or connect to each other."

Kipo's fell open; she had no clue what to say that. "Um... I'm sorry."

Dib chuckled. "I know, it's like some explanation from some dumb sci-fi movie, but when I told her that, Six just shrugged."

"O-Oh?" Fumbling, Kipo grasped onto the only part that she'd really understood. "So, Six helped you with that?"

"Well... as much as I hate to admit it, Six did most of the work," Dib grumbled. "She told me what to do, and I did it, but I didn't really understand any of it."

"I see... but I guess that really doesn't matter," Kipo thought out loud, and Dib glanced up, seemingly surprised.

"It's not?"

"No... we can figure that out later, after all," Kipo explained. "What I really want to know... is where in the world Luz, Kris and I are... and how we get out."

"Looks like this 'Dib' guy is a little strange, based on Kipo," Luz noted, both her and Alice studying the girl closely. "My guess is that he's like some eccentric old guy! You know, like Dumbledore."

"Ah... he does seem to be... confusing..." Alice agreed, but Luz could tell that she wasn't really listening. Luz frowned, glancing at her, but before she could ask, Alice continued. "Excuse me, Luz, but I've been wondering... where are you all from? From what I've been hearing, you're new to this place, like I am."

"Huh?" Luz blinked. "Oh, well, yeah. It seems there are a lot of us that are here from other worlds, all different ones. But most of them aren't here right now, because Kipo, Kris and I came to this part of the world by accident. It's like some weird secret easter egg from a video game!"

Suddenly, Hazel tilted his head, and Luz, who had been way too aware of him while simultaneously trying to ignore them, flinched.

"Kris..." Hazel said thoughtfully, as if he's just remembered them... oh no.

"Where are they?" the rabbit continued while Luz panicked. "They seemed to have disappeared."

"A-Ah, n-no they haven't!" Luz cried, far too loudly. Hazel looked taken aback. "I just forgot to tell you, they had to go to the washroom!"

If Hazel had eyebrow's, he'd be raising one. "What?"

"Yeah... but they didn't want to bother you, so they went to look for themselves!" Luz continued, but she knew all she was doing was digging herself into a deeper hole. "They'll be back soon, I'm sure."

Hazel didn't look convinced, stepping passed Luz towards the door Kris had disappeared through earlier.

"No, wait-!" Luz tried, but Hazel shook his head.

"This place is dangerous," Hazel said, and there was a certain edge to his tone. "No one should wander off on their own."

The door slammed shut, and Luz winced. But before she could follow Hazel, there was a comforting hand on her shoulder. Luz looked back to see Alice smiling softly at her.

"Don't worry," she said. "Your friend will be alright. Hazel will protect them!"

'That's kind of what I'm worried about...' Luz thought worriedly, but she tried to match Alice's smile regardless. Kris... would probably be fine. They could take on Hazel, right?"

Kris peered through the glass doors, complete with about a million scratches and cracks, making it nigh impossible to make out anything other than blurry shapes, and with pitch black darkness, it was hard to say what was shadows and what was real.

But, of course, that wasn't the real important part here. Kris raised their hands, and pushed. Success! The door opened behind their palms. Well, there's the escape route checked off.

Now for the other things Luz told them to look for. The flowers certainly were weird, but Kris doubted they counted as evidence. They moved on, through a door on the other side of the room.

This time, it looked relatively normal, but relatively normal wasn't really on par with most things here, Kris noted. Therefore, they made sure to study the room closely.

The room they found themselves in looked like an old office, converted into a child's bedroom, Alice's probably. After all, Kris didn't think that the childish drawings of different creatures and flowers all over the walls really fit Hazel's character.

The room, despite being as dark and creepy as the rest of the building, was noticeably brighter and more welcoming. The drawings were clearly supposed to be cheerful, and, despite themselves, Kris felt themselves relaxing. This room seemed... comfortable.

However, there weren't many personal belongings, Kris noticed. In fact, the only thing in the room was a makeshift bed (it was a table) by the corner, a bunch of uncomfortable looking fabric on top of it. Kris frowned, and felt it. Scratchy. They dropped it immediately.

Well, there didn't seem to be anything else here, not even something that someone would be able to write with. That was probably in another room. In any case, there didn't seem to be anything let in this room, so Kris left, moving along the same wall of the room until they came to a second door, opening it like the first.

Oh.

Well. This was different.

"Where you are...?" For once, Dib was looking at her with skepticism and creepy intrigue. He seemed interested in that mystery as well. "Yeah, that's a good question."

Kipo nodded in agreement. "Well, where ever we are, the moon's here, too."

Dib blinked, looking surprised. "The moon?"

"It's missing. From your place, anyway."

"It is?" Dib frowned, suddenly looking troubled. "I..."

"You hadn't noticed either, right?" Kipo asked, smiling reassuringly. "Yeah, me neither... ever since I've gotten trapped in this world, I've noticed that I've been getting more and more gaps in my memory... I feel like I'm forgetting obvious things."

Dib's nose wrinkled, but he didn't say anything. He didn't look like he knew what to say. Kipo... didn't really know what to say either, so she changed the topic.

"So... do you have any clue how any of this works?" Kipo asked.

"How any of what works?"

"Anything!" Kipo replied, sounding a bit more annoyed than she meant to. "The portal, the crystals, the new place we've ended up in... I don't get any of it at all, and, well, I'm kind of panicking right now! I don't want anyone... to end up like Adam..."

Kipo winced at the thought, but thankfully, Dib continued before she could sink into her thoughts.

"Um..." Dib looked thoughtful. "I have some theories, maybe..."

"Then tell me!" Kipo urged him, but Dib shook his head.

"No, they're vague guess at best, and probably all wrong," Dib explained, looking embarrassed. "I don't know anything either."

"Oh..."

For a second, the two of them thought in silence.

"Well... has Six said anything?"

'Adam?' Luz thought, tilting her head. She had picked it up from when Kipo was talking, but Kipo didn't seem to want to talk about him, moving onto something else next. But Luz couldn't help but wonder... what happened to him?

Well, she didn't wonder very long, because Alice was suddenly talking to her.

"Say, Luz... are you a traveler?" Alice asked. Luz glanced down at her.

"Huh? Well, I guess that fits, I've been all over," Luz explained, pride evident in her tone. "Kipo and Kris, too, by the sound of it."

"Oh," Alice gasped, sounding enamored and awed. "That sounds amazing."

"It was!" Luz agreed. "I saw all kinds of cool places, like the upside down waterfall, and the tunnels that somehow get you across the world in like, fifteen minutes!"

"That sounds amazing..." Alice said, and Luz enthusiastically nodded.

"Yeah!" she said. "But... I have to admit, it got a little lonely sometimes... I could never find anyone to talk to, other than Six. And don't get me wrong, she's great company but..."

"She's only one person," Alice finished. "I understand. I've been here for months now, and while I was awed by this place at first... it's gotten dull."

"Really?" Luz was taken aback. "But the outside looked so exciting..."

"I'm sure it is, but like Hazel says, it's dangerous as well," Alice said. "That's why we stay in here."

'Right... and that's not suspicious at all,' Luz thought, but before she could continue that, Alice was once again speaking.

"Hey... you and your friends look strong," Alice noted. "When you leave, can I go with you?"

Luz blinked, and then her face split into a wide smile. "Of course!"

The room has fabric all over the place, like clothes spread around in a messy room, and on the table, it was cluttered with needles and spools. Dirt and mud was scattered around the room, and all over the walls.

This room was a mess.

There was also something else, pushed against the wall over on the other side of the room. Kris tried to step towards...

But they were suddenly yanked backwards by a hand on the back of their shirt.

Dib looked annoyed. "Six? Well, she seems to know everything, so probably. I guess I should ask her..."

Dib looked around, as if expecting her to appear right in front of them.

"Uh, you can't communicate with anyone else while you're using this," Kipo explained, holding up the crystal. Dib huffed.

"Oh, well that's just perfect," he grumbled. "Well, we'll disconnect this, I'll get my answer, and call you back. Six said it'd be easier from now on."

"Really?" Kipo asked, surprised. "Well, that's convenient."

"Yeah," Dib agreed. "Well, see you later."

"Huh- Oh! Uh, bye?"

After that awkward goodbye, Dib slowly fell away, being replaced by the familiar grey room that she'd found herself in earlier, but some people were missing. Kipo was just about to ask Luz where they were when a door suddenly slammed open, and Hazel walked through, fuming. The face of the costume was scrunched in a terrifying animalistic rage, and he growled as he hurled Kris into the room.

"I would have thought that you three would have the sense NOT to snoop around!" Hazel shouted. "But if you can't even do that, that's fine. You'll just have to stay locked in here!"

With that, Hazel slammed the door shut again, and a click echoed throughout the room.
