Chapter 3 - Diagon Alley
"So I already have the money to pay for everything I need?" I asked Hagrid as we walked towards the gateway to Diagon Alley.
"Yep, Everythin' is righ' there in Gringotts, shared with yer brother." Hagrid replied.
We left the Leaky Cauldron from the back door, which lead to a little brick area for the rubbish bins. We were standing in front of the gateway to Diagon Alley.
"Since yer so smar' why don' yeh open the gateway?" Hagrid asked.
I stepped up to the wall and looked at it. Then I tapped the bricks in the wall in an anti-clockwise order, and the doorway to Diagon Alley was formed. We walked through the gateway and stepped foot in Diagon Alley, the gateway returning to its original state behind us. Diagon Alley was exactly the same as it was in the pictures, shops lined each side of the alley and in the distance in front of us I could see the famous wizarding bank, Gringotts. It was extremely busy, full of children and parents preparing for Hogwarts, just like me and Hagrid, although Hagrid wasn't my parent.
"This is where yeh'll get yer quills and ink, over there's all yer bits and bobs for doing yer wizardry. There's the broom-shop an' that's where yeh'll get yer robes." Hagrid explained as we walked past tonnes of shops, briefly describing what every single shop sold, until we got to Gringotts.
"An' this, is Gringotts Bank. Ready?" Hagrid asked.
"Of course." I replied.
We entered Gringotts through the front doors. Goblins sat at counters working away as we walked down the shining aisle to the main goblin sitting at the back of the bank. When we approached the goblin he lifted his head.
"Miss. Elizabeth Potter wishes ter make a withdrawal." Hagrid said, hesitantly.
"Does Miss. Elizabeth Potter have her key?" The goblin replied.
"Ah I have it here somewhere." Hagrid explained as he dug into his pockets, searching for the key to my vault. "Here we are." Hagrid said as he handed the key to the goblin.
"Very well." The goblin turned to another goblin and said something to him, then he turned back to us. "Griphook will take you to your vault."
We followed the goblin to a cart on a track, which zoomed through the many caves deep underground that held at least 100,000 witches and wizards' vaults. We came to a hault when we reached my vault and the goblin climbed out, followed by me and Hagid.
"Vault 687. Lamp, please." Griphook asked.
Hagrid handed Griphook's lamp to him.
"Key, please." Griphook asked, and Hagrid handed him my key.
Griphook unlocked the door to reveal stacks upon stacks of galleons, and I stared in awe.
"Didn' think you'd be lef' with nothin' now, didja?" Hagrid said.
I walked into the vault and took 500 galleons, just to make sure I had enough money. Then we zipped back through the caves to return to the surface of Gringotts bank. We stepped out of the cart and left through the front doors, returning to Diagon Alley.
"Now, do yeh wan' ter get yer robes, or equipmen' first? Or we could get yer books, or a new wand since yers isn' the best is it?" Hagrid asked.
I pulled out my old wand, a hand-me-down given to me when I was first allowed to start using magic for my eleventh birthday. I'd always wanted to get my own proper wand, but I wanted to do that last, so I could get everything else done first.
"Uh, robes?" I replied.
Hagrid set off to Madam Milkin's Robes for all Occasions on the north side of Diagon Alley, and when we got there we were greeted by a rather posh looking woman, most likely Madam Milkin.
"And what can I do for you today?" She asked.
"I, uh, need school robes and dress robes." I replied.
The woman ran off and brought back a pile of dresses and a few Hogwarts uniforms. I tried all of them on and eventually I had my uniform and dress robes. My uniform was pretty bland, but Madam Milkin told me that the uniform is slightly different for each house, so it would be different once I was sorted into my house. I also chose a light blue dress which fell to the floor, with a thin sliver strap around the waist, apparently it suited my skin tone.
Then we went to Scribbulus Writing Instruments, to get all of my writing equipment, Flourish and Blotts, where I got the books I needed, Broomstix, where I bought myself one of the fastest brooms in the world, the Nimbus 2001, I had enough money so why not? We also went to Slug and Jiggers Apothecary, where I got various potion ingredients and a cauldron, and I got everything else I needed for Hogwarts. Except my wand.
"I'll be right back, yeh go up ter Ollivanders and I'll meet yeh up there in a few minutes." Hagrid said. "I'm guessin' yeh know where it is." He added and then he walked away.
I entered the empty wand shop which rung a bell, alerting Ollivander someone was in his shop. The walls were covered with shelves holding thousands of different types of wands, an old man appeared from behind a shelf and spoke to me.
"Elizabeth Potter. I was wondering if I would ever see you."
He walked over to me.
"I presume your here for your wand?" He asked and I nodded. "Very well, lets have a look."
Ollivander disappeared behind the walls of wands and returned later with a dark red box, half the size of a shoe-box, and removed the top to reveal an ash 9" Unicorn Hair, which I tried but ended up breaking several things.
"Nope." Said Ollivander.
I went through multiple wands until I found the right one. I could just tell by holding it in my hand that it was the wand for me. It was a Blackthorn 10" Phoenix feather.
"This is the one." Ollivander said. "Your brother's wand is Phoenix feather too, you know. The same Phoenix that gave a feather for, You-Know-Who's wand." Ollivander explained as he walked over to the counter at the back of the store. I payed for my wand and when I turned around I noticed Hagrid standing outside the shop holding a cage containing a snowy owl. I left the shop with my new wand and went to meet him.
"I though' I'd get yeh the same owl I bought 'arry when I came here with him for his firs' year. So, here yeh go." Hagrid explained and then he handed me the owl.
"Thank you." I said, gleefully as we headed back though the brick wall and into the Leaky Cauldron.
