Chapter 13 - Dress Robes
"Aren't you going to eat anything?" Draco asked as I stared at my empty plate.
"Hm?" I blankly replied. I hadn't been listening. Harry had told me that the egg he had gotten from the first task didn't exactly give a clue for the next task, it just screamed. Surely that was the clue, or we had to do something to reveal the clue.
"You didn't eat at breakfast either." Draco added.
"I'm just not hungry." I muttered while pushing my plate away as Draco returned to his food.
I looked over to the Gryffindor table to see Harry staring at a Ravenclaw girl. When she noticed Harry looking at her he spilt his drink all over himself.
Smooth.
Then a rather angry Hermione and blank as always Ron joined Harry, as well as a younger boy carrying a package, which he gave to Ron. Ron unwrapped the package to reveal traditional dress robes. The students around him chuckled at Ron's confusion over the dress robes, then he gave them to Ginny, his younger sister, who gave them back. Immediately the table erupted with laughter.
"They're not for Ginny they're for you! Dress robes." Hermione laughed.
"What's Weasley holding?" Draco asked.
"I don't know I can't see." I lied.
After everyone had finished their food we were sent to the assembly room where we found McGonagall and a gigantic music player standing in the center. The girls and boys were separated and sent to sit at opposite ends of the room.
"The Yule Ball has been a tradition of the tri-wizard tournament since it's inception. On Christmas eve night we and our guests gather in the great hall for well mannered frivolity. As representatives of the host school I expect each and every one of you to put your best foot forward, and I mean this literally because the Yule Ball is first and foremost... a dance." McGonagall explained.
Groans and excited squeals filled the hall from opposite sides of the room. The girls were obviously more excited than the boys.
"Silence." McGonagall insisted and the room fell silent. "The house of Godric Gryffindor has commanded the respect of the wizard world for nearly ten centuries. I will not have you in the course of a single evening besmirching that name by behaving like a babbling, bumbling band of baboons."
"She does know that not everyone in this room is a Gryffindor student right?" I whispered to Hermione. I had snuck in with the Gryffindors, honestly, I didn't want Snape telling me how to dance.
"Now, to dance is to let the body breathe, inside every girl a secret swan slumbers longing to burst forth and take flight." McGonagall beamed. "Inside every boy a lordly lion prepared to prance. Mr Weasley, will you join me."
Hermione and I exchanged a look of laughter and joy as Ron sat still, his eyes wide with confusion. McGonagall grabbed Ron and pulled him up to dance.
"Now, place your right hand on my waist." McGonagall insisted.
"Where?" Ron shrieked.
"My waist." McGonagall demanded.
I couldn't help it, I burst out laughing and a wolf whistle erupted throughout the room. McGonagall turned around to face me and looked in confusion.
"Miss Potter this is not a la-" She trailed off. "Miss Potter? What are you doing here this is for Gryffindors only! Oh never mind." McGonagall turned back to Ron "Now, bend your arm. Mr Filch..."
Mr Filch turned to the music player and started playing an old classical record. McGonagall started to dance and Ron trailed behind.
"One two three, one two three, one two three." McGonagall repeated. "Everyone come together."
"She can forget it." I scoffed to Hermione as the rest of the girls stood, but the boys remained seated. "I am not dancing."
I looked up and spotted Harry and Ron still sitting with the rest of the boys.
"Oh come on Elizabeth!" Hermione laughed, pulling me off my seat.
"I'm going to go grab my brother to dance with so I'm not stuck with some idiot. Maybe you should take Ron." I chuckled and walked over to Harry.
As I walked across the room to the group of remaining boys Seamus approached me.
"Fancy a dance?" He asked and a group of Gryffindor boys whistled.
I looked over at Harry who was still sat in the same place watching us, he nodded his head, telling me to say yes.
"Why not?" I laughed as a grabbed Seamus and headed to dance.
-
"You had to dance with Seamus?" Draco smirked.
"He's okay, but considering his reputation with magic I am surprised he didn't blow me up." I chuckled. "Any thoughts on who you're going to take to the dance?"
"Not really but-" Draco was interrupted by Goyle, who was holding a card with my name written on it, spelled completely wrong.
"Dance?" Goyle bellowed.
"Are you asking me to the dance Goyle?" I asked and he nodded, Draco stood with a slight smirk on his face. "No thanks."
Goyle paused then turned around and left, when he was gone I turned to Draco who burst out laughing.
"Oh shut up, at least someone's asked me." I joked.
"And that someone was Goyle." Draco smirked. "I'm so jealous."
I will be honest, I did get my fair share of Yule Ball requests, which I declined. Although Harry wasn't doing as well, with a total of 0 requests and 0 acceptions. And it was the same with Ron. But not Hermione.
"Elizabeth!" Hermione yelled as she came running down the hallway towards me a few days later after the Yule Ball was announced. "You will never believe who asked me to go to the dance with them!"
"Harry?"
"No."
"Ron?"
"Nope."
Neville?"
"N-no."
"Thank god."
"Victor Krum!"
My mouth dropped. Victor Krum was extremely popular among the girls at Hogwarts, everyone had been trying to get him to go to the dance with them.
"Shut up." I joked.
"No! He asked me this morning!" Hermione squealed excitedly.
The two of us stood in the middle of the hallway jumping for joy at Hermione's date to the dance, screaming with excitement. We were so excited McGonagall came out of her class to tell us to shut up, but in nicer terms.
"So I have a date to the dance." Hermione beamed. "But what about you? You need one."
"I will be honest, I don't think I can beat Victor Krum." I replied with disappointment.
