Ch. 7: Strange Frequencies

The Chimera that had been tearing the electricity apart was dead.

Stiles and Theo brought the body to Scott and me at the Animal Clinic, telling us that a Dread Doctor had killed him.

Scott looked at the body in recognition.

"Do you know him?" I asked.

Scott nodded. "His name's Josh. He was a junior."

I looked at Theo and Stiles. "Which one did it? The one with the cane?"

Theo and Stiles exchanged a look.

Theo looked at Scott and me, nodding. "Yeah."

"What are we going to do with him?" Stiles asked. "We can't just set the alarm and leave. That's how Tracy disappeared. All right, someone's got to stay here with him."

Theo sighed. "I'll do it." Stiles, Scott and I looked at him. "It's not like I had a big Saturday night planned."

Scott's phone vibrated. He looked at the text.

"What is it?" I asked.

"Another one," Scott answered. "Another Chimera."

Stiles, Scott and I had gone to Scott's house.

Liam had brought the Chimera named Hayden into Scott's room.

Hayden had locked herself in the bathroom.

Scott knocked on the door. "Hayden? It's Scott. I know that you're scared, but we just--we want to help."

I listened to Hayden on the other side of the door. "I can hear her heart beating. She's really freaked out." I looked at Liam. "What happened?"

"She was okay when we got here," Liam told us. He looked at Scott. "I went to take you for two seconds and she locked herself in."

"Why?" I asked.

"I don't know," Liam told us.

"She's definitely a Chimera?" Scott asked.

Liam nodded. "She said she heard a voice saying, 'Your condition improves'."

"Okay, that's unsettling," Stiles told us, knocking on the door. "Hayden. This is Stiles. Your sister works for my dad down at the station. Look, just open the door, okay? You can trust us."

"We just need to tell you the truth, Hayden," I told her. "And that kind of thing usually is better face-to-face. Listen. Either you're gonna unlock the door, or I'm gonna have to break it open. It's okay if you don't want to talk, or if you're not ready to believe us. But we just... we gotta know that you're okay in there."

There was no answer.

I sighed, bracing myself to broke the door open.

The door unlocked, opening.

Hayden was on the other side, transformed with gold glowing eyes, fangs and claws. "I believe you."

The next day, Stiles, Scott and I were meeting in the loft, standing around the table over a map.

"We're back to tellurric currents?" Stiles asked.

"If the Dread Doctors didn't like coming into Eichen House because of them, maybe we can use them to protect Hayden," I told them.

"Okay, so besides Eichen, where's the strongest convergence?" Stiles asked. I pointed at the Beacon Hills High School on the map. "You want to hide her in the high school? For how long?"

"If we have to, all night," Scott answered. "Liam convinced Hayden not to say anything to her sister yet. She's working a double tonight, and she thinks Hayden's staying at a friend's."

"But it's just a school, though," Stiles told us. "You know, it's not exactly a fortress."

"Lydia's got an idea for that," Scott told him. "Remember how Valack quoted Tesla?"

"Frequency and vibration," Stiles answered.

"She thinks he wasn't saying that just to sound smart," Scott told us. "She thinks maybe it was a clue."

"To do what?" Stiles asked.

"Disrupt their frequency," I answered.

"Parrish took three cell phone jammers from the station," Stiles told us. "He thinks he can broaden their range of frequency."

"It's a long shot, but it's the best we've got right now," Scott told us.

"What about Kira?" I asked.

"Uh, she's going to stay home," Scott answered. "She made whatever's happening to her worse by being at Eichen. The Doctors used her to get inside. She's trying to figure out what's going on with her before she tries helping anyone else."

"If this works tonight, what happens tomorrow?" Stiles asked. "Are we gonna keep trying to find places to hide her?"

"No," I answered. "If this works tonight, we're gonna catch one of them."

*****

Lydia, Malia and Parrish had set up the cell phone jammers all over the school.

Parrish was keeping watch from outside in his car.

Malia and I were keeping watch in the hallway.

We could hear Lydia and Scott talking in the boys' locker room.

"Is it me or is Liam not aware of the second part of the plan?" Lydia asked.

"I'm still not sure if there's going to be a second part," Scott told her.

"Or if it's going to work," Lydia told him.

Scott didn't answer.

Malia and I could hear the conversations in the locker room.

We could hear Liam. "Don't worry. You learn to control it."

We could hear Hayden. "I'm not like you. I wasn't bitten by a wolf. I was somebody's science experiment. This is so bizarre."

"I know," Liam told her. "But you're gonna be okay. I promise."

"What am I?" Hayden asked.

"You're Hayden," Liam told her.

"By the way, if you get me out of this, I'll forget all about the sixth grade," Hayden told him.

I looked around the hallway, sighing, waiting.

Malia realized something. "Tara." I turned to face her. "I was just thinking since we can't use our phones, we can't check in on Stiles and Theo."

"I didn't even think about that," I told her.

"Me, either," Malia told me. "So, we're standing here waiting for guys in masks and breathing tubes to show up. But who or what are Stiles and Theo are waiting for?"

*****

We could hear Liam's voice. "What are we gonna do with these?"

We could hear Scott's voice. "Brought them just in case."

"In case of what?" Liam asked.

We could hear Lydia's voice. "In case we had a chance to catch one of them."

"If we can't make the school a fortress, then maybe we can make it a trap," Scott told them.

"They're coming for her," Liam told them. "Doesn't that mean she's the bait?"

*****

Malia hesitated for a long moment, looking at me. "Did you tell Scott?" I looked at Malia. "About my memory?"

"I almost did," I answered, looking away.

"What stopped you?" Malia asked.

"Chimera trouble," I answered. I turned to face Malia. "And I meant what I said. If you don't tell someone, I will."

"I know," Malia told me. "You made that perfectly clear."

"I'm not doing this to try to be a bitch, Malia," I told her. "I'm doing this because someone needs to know. If something happens, then we might need help in trying to stop it."

Malia nodded, looking away. "I get it, Tara. I said I would tell, and I will."

"Good," I told her, turning away. We heard the car outside starting. "Parrish?" I walked outside, watching Parrish driving away. "Where..."

An animal trap sprung from the ground below me, snapping closed around my ankle, trapping me, making me groan a scream of pain. I fell to the ground. An animal trap sprung from the ground, snapping closed around my arm, making me groan a scream, trapping me. A spear sprung from the ground, piercing me through the neck.

Lydia, Malia and I met up in the locker room after the hallucinations had ended and Liam and Hayden had disappeared.

Scott and Mason walked in.

"They're gone," Malia told them.

"Hayden and Liam are gone," I told them.

Scott looked around in denial.
