Ch. 13: Codominance

It was night outside of Scott's house, standing next to my car.

Liam had gone inside to talk to Scott.

"They're alive," Liam told him. "I mean, the Chimeras. Some of them, not all of them."

"I know," Scott told him.

"Oh, you do?" Liam asked.

"Yeah," Scott answered. "I--I'm sorry. I can't talk right now, Liam."

"It was Theo," Liam told him. "He's the one who brought them back, and now they're with him. Like they're his pack."

"I know," Scott told him.

"Hayden's one of them," Liam told him.

"She's okay?" Scott asked.

"She's alive," Liam answered. "I'm not sure she's totally okay, but she's definitely alive."

"That's good," Scott told him.

"Where are you guys going?" Liam asked.

"To get Kira," Scott answered. "Her dad told us that her mom took her out to New Mexico, to this place called Shiprock. They're trying to figure out a way to help her, but it's dangerous. so, we're gonna go find her and bring her back."

"I'll come with you," Liam told him.

"Nah, you can't," Scott told him.

"Let me help," Liam told him. "Let me do something. Just tell me what I can do."

"Don't do anything," Scott told him.

Scott walked outside toward us.

"So, what did he want?" Stiles asked.

"To help," Scott answered.

"You gonna let him?" Stiles asked.

"Eventually, I guess," Scott answered.

"Okay, but shouldn't he be a little higher on your priority list right now?" I asked. "I mean, since he's the only other actual Werewolf, your only actual Beta."

"You didn't see the way that he came at me," Scott told us. "You didn't see the look in his eyes."

"Well, I've been with you on a full moon, so I've seen that look," Stiles told him.

"You want to get the band back together, Scott, you don't leave out the drummer," I told him. "Come on. We have to get to Shiprock, New Mexico."

I got into the driver's seat of my car.

Scott got into the passenger seat.

Stiles got into the backseat.

We drove away.

We were on the road.

Scott was reading a book.

"You find anything yet?" I asked.

"It's mostly the same stuff you already knew," Scott told me. He read from the book. "'Damnatio Memoriae was a Roman practice, a government decree to destroy the images of the damned. And they would scratch off their names from inscriptions, chisel their faces off of statues. The Romans believed it was a punishment worse than death'."

Stiles nodded. "Being forgotten."

"Listen to this," Scott told us. "'Damnatio Memoriae was later used on a serial killer in 1598 known as the Demon Tailor. He lured children into his shop in Paris where he would kill them and boil the flesh off their bones to eat. The courts believed the crimes so horrible, they ordered all documents destroyed. To this day, no one knows his real name."

"So, the Dread Doctors resurrected a killer who was so bad that he had to literally be erased from history," I told them.

"A killer the became a Werewolf," Scott told us.

"Which probably made him a better killer," Stiles told us. "That's great."

I sighed, looking away.

Scott gave me a look. "I know that look. That's the look you get when you know something, but you don't want to say anything because you're trying to protect us."

I sighed. "I think I know what they brought back."

"So?" Stiles asked.

"So, you better pray that I'm wrong," I answered. Scott and Stiles exchanged a look. "Have you heard of the Beast of Gevaudan?"

"Uh, I have a feeling that I don't want to," Stiles told us.

"It's the original Werewolf," I told them. "One that turned by drinking rainwater out of a wolf's paw print. He turned into the Beast and killed hundreds of people in the Auvergne and South Dordogne areas of France from 1764 to 1767."

"I've read about that," Scott told me. "Didn't he kill, like, 113 people?"

"Don't believe anything you read," I told them. "It was closer to 500."

"How do you know all of this?" Stiles asked.

"The Argents aren't the only ones who keep a Bestiary," I answered.

Scott nodded. "Right. I remember. Peter showed us a Bestiary on the laptop when we were looking for Jackson."

"Right," I agreed. "An ancestor of the Argents finally killed the Beast. Some of the details were lost over time, but know this. It's a creature from hell."

We were still driving.

"You still not talking to Malia?" Scott asked.

"Uh, she's not talking to me," Stiles answered. "Or anyone, I guess."

"I think I know why," I told them. "I think she found her mother."

"Her mother?" Scott repeated. "As in the Desert Wolf?"

"Yeah," I answered.

Stiles sighed. "I knew she was still looking. She erased her name off my board, but I just... I knew she never stopped."

"When I was at her house, I'm pretty sure Braeden was there, too," I told them.

"Braeden?" Scott repeated. "What, did you catch her scent?"

"Actually, it was her motorcycle," I told them. "I smelled her exhaust."

Scott sighed. "What the hell do you think they're gonna do?"

"Something that Malia doesn't want to tell us about, so probably something bad," I answered.

"Oh, my God," Stiles told me. "You already know, don't you? It's like... it's like the chemosignals, right?"

I sighed, nodding. "Aggression."

"How much?" Scott asked.

"I think she's gonna kill her," I told them. "She's gonna kill her mother."

Scott and Stiles were frustrated, sighing.

We had to stop for gas.

I walked up to the doors, walking inside to pay for gas.

While Scott and Stiles were talking outside.

"There was a pin," Stiles told him. "There was one little metal pin attached to the scaffolding. He was trying to pull me down."

"He was trying to kill you," Scott told him.

"Yes," Stiles agreed. "And then I pulled the pin. And all these metal braces came down. And one of them just--just went right through him."

"Why didn't you think you could tell me?" Scott asked.

Stiles sighed. "It was just the way you were looking at me that night. You know, you're standing there with a wrench in your hand, you're looking at me like I just bashed you in the head with it. You know, like I'd broken your sacred rule, and that's it, there's no going back."

"I know the difference," Scott told him.

"What?" Stiles asked.

"I know what self-defense is," Scott told him.

I looked toward them outside, relieved to see them as friends again.

We were back on the road after dark.

I was driving again.

Scott was in the passenger seat.

Stiles was in the backseat, sleeping.

We came up to Shiprock, but it was obscured with storm clouds, lightning.

"Hey, Stiles," Scott told him. He looked back at Stiles, hitting him on the shoulder lightly to wake him up. "Stiles." Stiles woke up. "Take a look at this."

We looked at the storm for a moment.

"What the hell do you think's happening to her out there?" Stiles asked.

Scott shook his head to silently tell us that he didn't know.

I sighed, starting to drive faster.

We pulled over outside the storm,  getting out out of the car to watch the clouds.

Scott looked at Stiles.  "I don't know why I believed him. I don't know why we didn't just keep talking that night. Five more minutes, and we could've figured out that there were two different stories. We could've filled in a lot of blanks. Should've just kept talking."

"He knew you wouldn't," I told them.

Stiles nodded in agreement.

"I didn't want it to happen like this," Scott told us.

"Like what?" Stiles asked.

"I knew, sooner or later, one of us was going to get a little too much blood on our hands," Scott told us. He looked at me. "Before I became an Alpha, before you changed, I thought that it could've been you."

"Not the first time someone's said that to me," I told him.

"And then I thought it was gonna be Malia," Scott told us.

"Well, she definitely seems like she's working on it," I told them.

"Just always thought that if it were to happen, then it should be me," Scott told us. "I'm the one who's constantly putting you guys in danger, risking your lives for people you don't even know. It should've been me."

Stiles patted both of us on the shoulders. "Come on. We only got a few hours to sunrise. Come on. Let's go."

Stiles walked toward my car.

I was about to turn to follow when I heard a sword clanging in the distance. "Hey, guys, do you see that?"

We looked off in the distance, seeing flashes of light coming from the base of Shiprock, in time with the sword clashing.

"It's Kira," Scott told us.

We exchanged a look.

The sun had risen.

When we finally found Kira and Noshiko, they were facing off with three Skinwalkers, each having a weapon raised, swords or spears.

I drove up to them, jumping out of the car, rolling over the ground, standing, shifting, my eyes glowing blue, growling at the Skinwalkers.

Kira and Noshiko looked at us in shock.

"Get in!" I told them.

Kira ran toward Stiles and the car, getting into the backseat next to Stiles.

"Come on," Scott told them. "Come on, come on. Let's go."

Noshiko followed Kira, getting into the back.

A Skinwalker threw her spear toward us.

I jumped up into the air to catch the spear midair, flipping through the air to throw the spear into another Skinwalker's shoulder, making her fall, landing on the ground in a crouch, growling at the Skinwalkers, turning around, running toward the car.

"Come on, come on, come on," Stiles told me. Scott lid over into the driver's seat. I got into the passenger seat. Scott drove us away as fast as he could. "Everyone okay?"

Noshiko nodded.

Kira was breathing heavily in relief. "You came for me."

We nodded.

We got back to Beacon Hills, in Scott's house.

Scott was sleeping in the living room.

I sat next to him. "Scott, wake up."

Scott looked up at Liam, Mason and Stiles. "What's wrong?"

"I found out something from Cory," Mason told us.

"We know what Theo's doing," Stiles told us.

"He's looking for an Alpha," Liam told us. "A blind Alpha."

I gave Scott a significant look. "He's looking for Deucalion."

We didn't know why Theo was looking for Deucalion, but it couldn't have been good.
