love.

if there's ever a word to describe such an excruciating feeling, love would have to fall under the top category.

as children we read cheesy romance novels where the naive damsel in distressed is saved from the fire breathing dragon by the handsome knight in shining armour. they get married almost directly on the spot, despite the fact they knew little too nothing about each other, let alone simple things such as each other's favourite dessert. we grow up, believing that love is the answer to all our problems, that nothing could ever be so horrid if we have love.

it's a naive way to think.

the truth is, love isn't enough. loving someone else unconditionally means giving yourself, means rendering yourself completely helpless at the hands of another. people warn us of our first heartbreak as we grow older, and we question it, telling ourselves 'no not me. it'll never be me,' because how could it be? we grew up watching first lives blossom into a forever type of love, full of honey and sunshine mornings, full of gentle touches and elated smiles.  

the truth is, love leaves you covered in deep set tears, leaves you feeling like your heart is truly shattering into millions of broken glasses. dreams, plans, whispered love filled words against your skin, all disappeared in the wind with a simple sniff, as if they were never there at all.

if love were to come with a warning, the first one that would pop up in shining red letters would be the obvious. never fall in love when your world is full of lies and secured masks. it will most definitely end with blood smeared on your hands.

a growing war is no place for romance, but then again, love always seeps its nails into you somehow. and before you know it, you're choking on the cracked pieces of your heart.
