Chapter 2: Cassie
As mom grabbed my ear and took me into the den, she was muttering something under her breath, sounded like she was really mad. When we got to the den, I sat and touched my ear with my paw, hoping there was no blood. Looking at my paw, I sighed, no blood.
"Do you know what would happen if the earth pack saw you above their territory?!?!" My mom yelled. "They could have thought we were sending a scout to plan an attack!"
"I know mom, they didn't see me! And if they did, we could explain what was going on!"
"They wouldn't believe us! Do you know how many packs have threatened the earth pack? We have barely five warriors! If they launch an attack, they would wipe our pack off the face of the earth!"
"I doubt that would happen." I replied, rolling my eyes. Mom took a deep breath, and flew out of the den. Talking to my father, He walked over to the den, looked me sternly in my eyes and said, "Learn the rules, or you will be a terrible leader." I stared at the ground, fighting back tears, but they came anyway. Stacie came in and saw me crying. "Hey Cass, It's ok, all wolves make mistakes sometimes." Licking my face, she started humming the song mom would sing to us before we went to bed. Neither of us remember it, but Stacie knows the tune like the back of her paw.
That night, when mom, dad, and Stacie were asleep, I looked at my wing. Still red, but not bleeding. I should have never gone to the earth pack. They just might launch an attack and it will me all my fault. "Cass, are you OK?" Stacie barked. "Ya, I'm fine. Go back to sleep."
"Ok" She yawned. Quietly stepping over mom and dad, I walk out of the den and wander around our territory. Walking near the edge of the lake, I take a quick lap at the water, carefully listening around me. My ears perk up as I hear a rustle in the bushes. Quickly turning and carefully scanning the bushes behind me, I see a small figure, fox like. Ugh, foxes. The foxes have been a pest to all the packs for as long as I can remember. Were a lot bigger than them, but they can get really annoying when you are trying to hunt. The hackles lifting on my back and neck, I growl and glare at the fox. Scurrying away, I notice it run over to the earth pack territory. It's going to get killed if it goes over there! Running and taking off, I soar through the sky, watching the fox. It looks up at me and keeps running. Flying towards the fox, I hear someone yelling my name. "Cass! Cass!" I look behind me and I see Anna flying towards me. Anna is a white wolf with yellow wing tips and spots. "What the heck are you doing out here!" Anna called to me.
"Saving a fox!" I howl back
"A FOX? You are risking your life for a stupid little FOX??"
"Yes!" I snapped at her. My strong wings pushing me farther from where she was.
Anna slaps her paw on her forehead.
"He, or she, Has a life to live. And if it runs in the earth pack territory, It will die!" I snap at her again.
"Cass, you are the craziest wolf I have EVER met! Wait up."
Landing and running for the woods, I catch up to the fox. Running past it, I fling around and stop it in its tracks. The fox stops and looks at me with a tilted head. Looking at his neck, I see a collar around his neck. Glistening in the moonlight, a name is carved into the tag. Carson. "Are you ok?" I ask.
Carson nods
"Do you want to be killed"
Shakes head
"Than why did you run for the earth territory?"
Carson looks at the dirt and digs his nose into it. Anna walks up to me, sits, and tilts her head.
"What is he doing?"
"I have no idea."
Carson starts to move his nose. Anna and I watch with our heads tilted, trying to figure out what he is doing. Carson keeps moving around, his nose still in the ground. About three minutes later, Carson sits and points to the area with his paw. Anna looks at me and shrugs. Looking at the dirt, I can see letters.
"He wrote something in the dirt. Duh"
"Ohh"
Anna flies over the area, analyzing it. "It says he is from a human Zoo, and he was running into the Forest to get back."
"Humans? I thought they lived in their caves miles from here?"
Carson nodded at Anna and I.
"So are you running from them, or too them?"
Carson tilts his head.
"The humans" Anna says, rolling her eyes.
Nod.
I shake my head and say, "So you want to go to the Human Zoo, where they have big machines and keep you in small cages and give you food, and not let you experience the thrill of hunting?"
Nod.
Anna slaps her paw on her forehead again and wines, "How many CRAZY animals are out tonight?"
