Chapter 2
As Abigail let all her excitement out, Onix told the other wolf shifters to go back to sleep. Abigail turned to Onix, who gestured to a cave behind him that was half-concealed with vines. "This cave may look small on the outside, but on the inside it is filled with magic arenas to train in. This cave is hidden from non-shifters and others by a magical barrier that can only be passed by those deemed worthy. Now be careful, our light source is what we call "thunder in a jar", it is a nice light source."
"Where are we? This place is amazing! But also very confusing," she said to him, puzzled. Onix nodded slightly as he started walking to the giant cave. It was filled with training dummies. Although the room was large, there weren't any other shifters. Abigail wondered why that was.
"All are a bit confused when they first join the team young one. You see, we train for battles with the demon shifters. A demon shifter was a shifter that trained here, but they use their powers for wrong reasons. If you see someone suspicious sneaking around, tell everyone and pull this lever," Onix was pointing at a lever on the rocky wall next to the entrance with his snout, "We do drills for this occasionally. The lever makes a dark magic protector come down, and that will make our magic cave safe. Now, before I call over an assistant, here is a schedule for your training," Onix said as he handed a paper over to her. Abigail skimmed the schedule, but Onix continued explaining something to her so she decided to look at it later.
"Now, I will call over an assistant to show you around. LEO!" Onix shouted across the training grounds.
After a few moments, an animal appeared from a doorway. It was a small puma. He looked up at Onix and Abigail and shifted back into a human. He had dirty blonde hair, a white T-shirt, brown boots, and brown shorts. Abigail titled her head in confusion. Shouldn't the boy be in bed by now? He did look pretty tired.
"Yes, Onix?" he asked politely. Onix looked at him; his eyes staring straight at him. Abigail waved slightly as he smiled back.
"I want you to show Abigail how we do things here," Onix demanded. He nodded as Onix leaped off into another room. Abigail guessed that the boy was around 12 years old. He put his hand out to shake.
"Hi, I'm Leo. I am a puma shifter and I'm a warrior at Camp Northwest," Leo said happily, still he was holding out his hand.
"Hi, I'm Abigail," she said as she shook Leo's hand. "I was told I'm a grey wolf shifter and I'm new here. So, Onix said that you would show me around, right?" Abigail asked politely. She looked around at her strange new home; she saw a room that lead into a grassy, area that looked like a field It reminded her of the football field back at her elementary school. Then she saw another room that lead to a rocky area, like the slope of a mountain or something. There was another room that was almost bare and had really tall ceilings, and even another that seemed like it was filled with water, like a giant pool. There were so many!
"Ok, well this is easy," Leo said as he began the tour. He pointed to the room with water. "That is the room that you will be going to when you practice your swimming," he said. Then he pointed to the grassy area. "That is the place that you will be practicing your speed and hunting skills," he said. After that, he pointed to the rocky area. "That is where you will practice your climbing skills," he said. Finally, he pointed to the room Onix went into. " That is the meeting room, that is where the Greats will discuss boring junk." Leo suddenly stopped and turned to Abigail to explain. "A "Great" is the first shifter of their species. Onix is the Great of dogs. Do you get it?" he asked.
Abigail nodded as she followed Leo to somewhere that she hadn't seen before. Leo looked back at Abigail, then he stopped.
"And another thing, each animal species train in groups, so go with the other wolves and dogs when it's time to train." Leo seemed to be about to walk away but then he stopped, as if he had just remembered something. "Oh Wait! I have one more thing to show you!" he exclaimed, and pointed to a large staircase a bit away. "Up the stairs are the dormitories. Girls and boys are separated, girls on the left side of the hall and boys on the right. That's all!" he finished as he started to head up the stairs. Abigail noticed that it was 1:00 in the morning, so she should probably go to bed too.
Abigail walked up the stairs and turned to the left of the hall, where Leo said the girl's dormitory would be. She stopped in front of a large, wooden double-door, and after a moment of hesitation she pushed them open. Inside was a large, high-ceiling room with lots of couches and a big fireplace in the corner. Tons of books and weapons were on the tables and couches, and Abigail gave them wary looks as she started to explore the big, homey room. There was a big, fuzzy carpet in the center of the room with lots of colors, but because the lights were off Abigail couldn't see if there was a bigger design on it. She was staring at the carpet when she suddenly heard footsteps above her.
"Hey! What are you doing down there?" came a voice from above Abigail's head. As she looked up her eyes widened. There was a big balcony above her! Standing against the railing was what seemed to be a young girl, but Abigail couldn't see her very well.
"Um," Abigail started, unsure, "I'm Abigail. I'm new."
"Oh?" the girl's voice changed from suspicious to curious in a split second. "That's awesome! We haven't had anyone new in a while! Did you just get here?" the girl started to exclaim, moving across the balcony and coming down some stairs into the room Abigail was in. The girl hurried over excitedly to Abigail with a wide grin on her face, stopping only but a few inches from her. Now that she was closer, Abigail could see that she had wavy, shoulder-length hair and was wearing a t-shirt and shorts. She had a a fresh band-aid on her nose.
"Um, yeah, I-"
"So you probably haven't been in here before, right? Oh, this is so exciting!" the girl cut Abigail off. "I'm Alexa by the way! Do you want to see the bedroom! It is super late, we should be in bed. Oh, but don't tell anyone that I told you this, because I'm not supposed to be awake right now, okay?" Before even waiting for Abigail to give a response, the girl continued again, laughing to herself. " Of course okay! You wouldn't do that, right? Follow me, I'll show you the beds." Alexa then abruptly turned and hurried back up the stairs, not giving Abigail a moment to think. "Come on, hurry up!" Alexa coaxed, and Abigail had no choice but to follow.
Alexa led Abigail upstairs to another room, which was full of beds as far as the eye could see. Abigail could just make out the shapes of people on some of the beds, and she saw some other shapes that didn't look like people at all. Alexa turned to her. "This is the bedroom!" she said in a hushed voice, but she was still a bit louder than she probably should have been. "You can go find an open bed to claim. It doesn't matter which one, as long as it doesn't belong to anyone else!"
"Thanks," Abigail said, but Alexa had already hurried off into the dark. Sighing, Abigail looked around, trying to find somewhere open for her. She walked around a bit, being as quiet as she could so she didn't wake anyone up. Then, in the corner of the room, she found a bed that had no one sleeping in it, and there wasn't any decorations around it or clothes on the floor by it. Abigail slowly climbed into the bed, afraid it would creak or squeak like the orphanage beds she was used to. Luckily, it didn't. Abigail settled under the covers and closed her eyes, suddenly feeling much more tired than she had a few minutes ago.
