Chapter 3- Picking Herbs
"Can you believe it?" Angel exclaimed. It was dark outside, and almost all the wolves were asleep. Few were awake, but those who were were most likely hunting for raccoons or birds. Angel and Arius were both in their bed side by side talking. "I finally get to put some of my skills to use!"
Arius laughed. "Same here. While I'm hunting, I could look for more objects. Plus, I've always had an urge to be a hunter."
Angel's eyes widened. She never knew that Arius wanted to be a hunter. "Well, it worked out great for both of us, then!" Arius nodded, and they both laughed. "Also, I can have a pup now that I'm not too busy with hunting."
Arius smiled as Angel lay her head against his. "What shall we name it?" Arius asked.
Angel smiled. "I was thinking maybe 'Riley' or 'Sam' if it were a girl, and 'Jordan' or 'Derrik' if it were a boy." Angel rolled on her side and stared at the wall dreamily.
"What about 'Chewbacca?'" Arius joked. Angel laughed and rolled back over to Arius.
"No!" She giggled a little more. It was a name he had heard a human mention a long time ago. "Other pups would make fun of her."
"Or him"
"Or him." Angel repeated with a yawn. I'm tired. We should probably head to sleep before someone complains."
"Ok, sugar." Arius said licking her cheek. "Good night, Angel."
"Good night, Arius." Angel said softly as she lay her head down, thought full of Arius and her with their new puppy. And she fell asleep.
Angel awoke the next morning with a yawn. Arius was standing a little away from the bed stretching his hind legs. She did the same and walked over to him.
"Good morning, my Angel." Arius said. Angel felt herself blushing. Arius used this compliment on times when he was in good moods. She felt happy already.
"Aww..." She said looking at the ground. "You're too sweet..."
Arius grinned. "C'mon, you gotta get some breakfast before you're first day." They both exited the den to see the average bustle to get to where they needed to be. They followed the crowd into a large room with little slabs for rocks for everyone to eat. Along the table were rabbit foot, a little bit of fox and a small bit of sheep for each wolf. When she saw the sheep, she automaticly suspected they were doing worse than before. Sheep was to easy to kill and very rare. Someone obviously took the chance to kill it; right now, anything was fair game.
She and Arius sat down and began to eat. "Do you know what happened to Naomi?" Angel asked after eating the rabbit foot in one bite.
"I'm not to sure," Arius replied.
Another wolf across the slab spoke up. "I heard she got punished and demoted. I believe she is a normal hunter."
"Really?" Angel exclaimed after eating the fox.
"Who's the Master Hunter now?" Arius asked, his food now gone.
"I think Dantos has taken it up until he finds a replacement." The other wolf replied. He had a brown fur and dark blue eyes. "The name's Miles." Miles said bye and walked out of the eating room. Angel finished her sheep, and they walked down the hall together. Arius said goodbye as he walked into the Hunting office and said, "Hello, Dontas!" Angel concluded what Miles had said was true after all, and continued past the scout's office, the Caregivers office, and finally to the Healer's office.
She entered to find multiple wolves quietly chatting. A Navy blue wolf turned to say hi, but immediately turned back to face a dark pink wolf, most likely his mate. The only other wolf in the room was a white wolf with grey legs and tail, with a black mark around her eyes that looked like a mask. She was looking up at the ceiling, as if in deep thought. She looked down in surprise, asked, "Where's Arius?" But quickly looked back up as if she never asked the question. They all seem like nice wolves, Angel thought to herself.
After a few minutes, another wolf walked in, he was a grey color like Angel, but instead had mixed hints of black in his fur.
"Attention." He said in a deep voice. It sounded tired to Angel. "Baylee is dealing with a sick wolf right now." He announced. "Harold and Tatiana, you two need to go into the Sick Room and help with the other wolves." The Navy blue and dark pink wolf walked out of the room. "Keighley, head east and collect some Farhide flowers." The white wolf gracefully yet quickly left the room. "And Arius- wait, you're not Arius."
"No sir," Angel replied. "I'm Angel, her mate. We switched. He's a hunter now."
"Oh?" He said. "Well then, nice to have you, Angel. You need to head west and collect herbs." He gestured towards a pile of packs. "Take one and collect the herbs in it. Oh, my name's Dameon, the assistant manager."
Angel walked to the corner and picked up a pack with her snout, and flung it over her head onto her back. "Thanks Dameon." She said as she exited the room and left the den.
She slowly walked through the woods. She was able to finally relax and roam free, without the stress of having to be quiet and watch. All she simply had to do was walk, look around for any herbs, and hum a run to herself. The birds were chirping quietly, making Angel laugh a small, happy laugh to herself.
Angel had eventually found a large patch of herbs, this was probably why she had been asked to head this way. She tossed the pach back over her head and opened it on the ground. She picked up herbs one by one with her mouth and placed them into the sack. After she had gotten about enough to fit the sack, she closed it and put it back on her snout, sliding it over her head, making sure not to spill any herbs.
Before she left, she spotted something move in the distance. It looked like a black wolf, so she got closer. It, sure enough, was another wolf. "Hey!" She called. The wolf looked at her and approached slowly.
"Who are you?" He asked. He had black beady eyes, and looked a little younger than Angel.
"I'm Angel." She answered.
"Where did you come from? Is there another pack?" Angel said nothing. The small wolf looked at Angel for a second, then ran off. Angel just realized what had happened. There was another pack. That was why food had been short; they were sharing it. She was about to chase him down when the worst happened.
The wolf hadn't even made it fifteen feet from angel when there was a loud bang. The strange wolf fell to the ground, blood ran quickly out of a hole in his side. Angel heard a cheer. After seeing the figure of a human walking towards the bloodied up wolf, she turned and ran as fast as she could. She heard another bang, and she thought either the human had shot at her or shot the wolf again, but she didn't care.
She ran into the den, gave the herbs to Baylee, ran to her den room and lept into the bed. She cried, and kept on crying. About thirty minutes later, Arius walked in, covered in mud. He shook himself off and snuggled with Angel while she cried to sleep.
