Chapter 15- Corruption
Ever since the coyote incident, Arius had made extra precautions to keep Angel and the pups safe. At lunch, Arius let Angel have all of the food, and when she denied, Arius just sat and didn't eat. And Arius continued to keep Angel warm, so after about an hour of walking, Arius looked hungry and cold. And when Angel says Arius can stop, he denies. Angel liked the fact he was being so helpful, but she was worried for his health.
Keighley decided to stay with the other three and not run off again, once again, due to the coyote incident. Miles got angry and growled or scoffed at anything that remotely bothered him. For some reason, the coyotes had affected everyone except for her. Maybe of she had been fighting, she would've changed too.
After three hours of walking, they spotted a moving bunch of wolves in the distance. Angel squinted and looked to see if it was their pack. Sure enough, they could make out Naomi and Baylee, and they could spot Dontas's bright fur.
"We found them!" Keighley exclaimed. She looked like she wanted to run as fast as she could towards the pack, but she restrained herself.
"We need to be careful." Miles said.
"Why?" Keighley exclaimed.
"Dontas could be watching for us. He may try to get us out. Get the guards to attack us." Miles said.
"Hope will stop him." Angel said. They all looked at her, and Arius nodded. "I agree." He said. Angel smiled.
"I'm glad you do." Angel said, and they continued to trail behind their pack. They were hoping someone would notice them and come to greet them. Other than Naomi and Dontas, though, but everyone else would be fine.
Sure enough, after a couple of moments, a grayish wolf turned and looked up at them. But, instead of turning to tell someone or coming to get them, it simply turned and acted like they had never been seen.
"Wha-" Angel stammered. Had they just been rejected? Angel thought maybe it was just a misunderstanding, but, she saw Harold turn, and turn right around again.
"Are they... Ignoring us?" Miles asked rhetorically.
"We may need to approach them." Keighley said.
"I think something is wrong." Angel said. She noticed Arius had stayed quiet the entire time, only warming Angel.
"Ya don't say?" Miles said sarcastically.
"Hey!" Arius barked. "Leave her alone!"
"Don't tell me what to do." Miles growled.
"Neither of you are helping." Keighley said sternly. Arius and Miles glared at each other and looked back forward.
"Let's go." Angel said. They all walked down towards their fellow wolves, as the sun began to dip below the horizon. It was almost night. "Keighley!" Angel exclaimed.
"What?" Keighley asked, followed by a surprised look. "Last day."
Angel nodded. "Isn't it ironic we found them on the last day? Right before night?"
Keighley just looked forward and continued. After some time, the pack stopped and everyone ran to find their mates or family. Others simply sat on the edge of the pack and fell into the snow, sleeping.
"We need to catch up." Arius said. They all agreed and began advancing towards them. When they arrived, Dontas, surprisingly, was the first to greet them.
"Did you fall behind?" He asked.
"No, you left us." Miles said.
"What's going on?" Hope had just walked over to the five of them.
"Hope!" Angel said.
"Nothing, sweetie." Dontas fibbed. "They just fell behind, that's all."
"You lier!" Arius screamed. "You ditched us at the cave! All three of us! You ordered the guards to take Miles and ship him off to another pack! What were you thinking?"
Heads began to lift up and turn to look at Arius, who breathed heavily and glared at Dontas.
"Dontas? I thought everyone was there when we left." Hope said, looking at Dontas.
"And they were." He answered. "It's not a big deal-"
"It is! You left us to save Miles, fight off a pack of coyotes, and while Angel is pregnant with pups!" Arius said. A guard glared over and looked away, as if threatening to hurt him.
"You be quiet!" Dontas yelled.
"You need to behave more like an Alpha would and treat your pack like anyone else!" Miles spoke up.
"Dontas!" Hope said. "Tell me the truth."
"I am, honey. Stay out of this."
"No he isn't!" Keighley yelled. "Arius tells the truth!"
"Shut up!" Dontas screamed back. "You were a danger to this entire pack! Leaving you was the only thing I could do!"
"You lied..." Hope said.
"It doesn't matter!" Dontas shot at Hope. "I had to do it for the pack!"
"You don't have to do anything!" Hope said. "You choose. And you chose wrong."
"You chose the wrong thing to say." Dontas said. Everything went in a flash. Dontas jumped forward and bit into Hope. There was a cry of pain from her as she fell to the ground. Blood ran out of a wound in her side as she struggled and gasped for air. Angel broke free of Arius and ran to Hope. Angel felt tears burn her eyes as she stared at the wolf on the ground.
"Hope..." Angel stammered. "I-"
"Angel..." Hope said quietly. Angel nodded and looked at her in the eyes. "You're brave... And sweet... Don't let Dontas... Win..." Hope took a gasp for air. Angel was quietly crying, tears running down her face and dropping onto the snow. "I know you... Can do... It..." She coughed and smiled her beautiful smile. "Good luck..." And Hope took her last breath.
Angel sat above her dead body, crying. "C'mon, sissy." She heard a voice say behind her. She turned and saw a guard looking into her eyes, an evil grin spread across his face. Everyone was watching, but no one did anything about it. Angel looked at the guard as anger boiled inside her.
"Hurry, you lazy brat." The guard croaked, kicking Angel along. She had enough. She clawed the eyes of the guard, blinding him, and then bit into his neck, killing him instantly. Another guard attacked from behind, but angel turned and rammed into him, sending him skidding across the snow.
"Angel!" Arius yelled. "Stop, stop, stop!"
"Don't tell me what to do!" Angel cried. She turned to face Dontas, who took a few steps back. "Why?" She said.
"It's Alpha stuff." Dontas replied. "So get your filthy snout out of my business."
"I can do what I want, you corrupted mutt!" Angel screamed, clawing Dontas's face.
"Stop!" Keighley said. But Angel ignored them. She bit into Dontas's leg, causing him to collapse. She stepped forward to kill him, but Arius pushed her pushed her out of the way.
"What are you doing?" Arius exclaimed.
"Leave me alone!" Angel cried. Before she knew what she was doing, she had clawed Arius right in the snout. He yelped and looked down. His snout was bleeding and dripping blood onto the snow. He coughed and there was a litre blood mixed in with the saliva. He looked up at Angel with a shocked look.
"I-I-" Angel looked. She had knocked out a guard, killed one, injured an Alpha and hurt her mate. She started to cry, and she ran into the woods. No one called her name. No one chased after her. She disappeared from everything she had known. She was as corrupted and evil as Dontas was.
