The Hero

Link thought he was used to his solitary lifestyle, but there was still something missing. He chalked it up to his memories being gone, and tried to ignore it. He had to focus on saving Zelda after all, in addition to survival. There was no time for deep introspection on his emotional turmoil over his situation.

So instead, he put his attention into looking for shelter for the night. It was going to be dark soon, and Link had been awake long enough to learn that skeleton of monsters could rise at night. If he had a shelter, he could at least get some rest and not have to fight as many monsters. The closest thing he found was a makeshift rain shelter, used by travelers when it was storming. It would have to do.

Link stood under it, still aware of his surroundings as the sun began to set. He didn't want to be caught off guard by anything. Soon enough, as twilight set in, he heard a clanking chain in the distance. Link reflectively drew his weapon, this time a woodcutter's axe. He'd never heard this kind of sound before, as far as he knew. The sound was getting closer. Link looked in the direction, and saw a shape moving towards him in the fading light.

Link's muscles tensed, and he found he couldn't move. His breath caught in his throat as the beast came into clear view. It was the largest wolf he'd seen. It's fur was an unusual shade of green, like moss. The eyes were a striking, human like blue that seemed to look through him. The face, though beastly, was also intelligent. There was a chain on the wolf's ankle, the source of the noise.

Link and the wolf stared at each other. The wolf sat down and continued looking at him. Link found he couldn't swing at the wolf and instead crouched down to the beast's level. They continued to look at each other, until Link reached out a hand and the wolf nuzzled it. An understanding had been reached, and companionship had been acquired.
