A Battle Against Burn
Coast and his battalion was on the front lines, a wave of SandWings flying their way. They had taken very few casualties in the battle against SkyWings just moments ago. Coast himself only suffered from a forehead scratch that made some blood run down his face. Nothing serious.
"Look lively, boys. We got company," Coast's commanding officer yelled.
"Looks like Burn's with them!" Someone else yelled in fear. Coast turned his attention to the large SandWing leading them. If this other SeaWing was right, they'd have one hell of a battle to deal with.
"Coast," his brother flew up beside him, "you doing ok?" He was worried. Staring into his brother's purple eyes as blood ran down his eye ridge.
"Yeah, I'm doing fine, Sand. You doing ok?" He asked back.
"Sure. Nothing I can't handle," he said with a cocky snicker. Sand was always like that, cocky and unwavering. Coast wasn't quite as brave, but he was determined as hell. Stubborn even. He'd fight till every drop of blood was drained from his body.
As the SandWings got closer, it was easy to tell that Burn was indeed among them. Leading her squad to the fight.
Everyone rushed in, hoping to be the one to kill the enemy's queen figure. She was covered in scars yet smiled the whole fight.
Both SeaWings and SandWings were dropping out of the sky one by one, but Burn still stood strong. Someone had to kill her.
Coast noticed his commanding officer being struck down by Burn. NO! Damnit, you son of a-. His train of thought was cut short as Burn lunged for him next, her sword already in motion aiming for his neck.
Coast tried blocking but could never hope to not take a devastating hit from her blood-stained sword. Sand jumped in the way last second to parry her strike. "Sand? Get out of here! I don't wanna see you hurt."
"Well I don't want to see you dead!" He laughed. He parried another strike and countered. He was actually able to hold his own against her! Ha! He may win!
Coast focused on keeping other SandWings away from their fight. Sand was bleeding from multiple places, but so was Burn.
After maybe some five different battles with soldiers, most were down or already preoccupied. Coast turned his full attention to Burn.
He tried rushing in to help. He stopped dead in his tracks before he could get to her. Burn's blade was protruding through Sand's back. "BROTHER!" Coast yelled.
In a final feat of strength, Sand raised his sword above this head. With all of his strength pouring into his arms he yelled and brought the sword down onto Burn's neck.
Sand's sword barely made it an inch into her thick neck before it was stopped. She gritted her teeth in pain, grabbing Sand's sword by the blade then kicking him off of her's.
I won't allow this. I won't let her walk away from this!
Coast dashed forward, screaming in a frenzy. Burn looked surprised at the SeaWing's speed. She blocked his blow, but barely. He kicked her away then darted down to his falling brother.
He raced down to grab him, but he was too far away, he'd never make it in time. Coast kept plummeting anyways, desperate that something would allow him to reach Sand in time.
He was almost there, just a few more feet, but the ground beat him first. Coast threw out his wings to halt himself as his older brother hit the ground. There was no coming back from that. Coast ran up to his brother but he was gone. Coast closed his eyes as tears fell down his dark blue scales.
Burn landed in front of him. She clicked her tongue. "How sad. I will give credit to him though, he held on for some time. Most dragons are taken down in a few strikes." Coast paid her no mind.
Only one thing crossed his thoughts. Make her pay.
He stepped away from his deceased brother, sword at the ready. "You're not going to flee?" Burn asked with a small laugh, twirling his brother's sword in one talon.
"Why do you do this?" Coast inquired. "Why do you kill?"
"Hmm?" Burn looked down her snout at him. She shrugged, "oh, I don't know. Maybe because it's fun? I enjoy watching dragons cry over their weak friends. I enjoy watching their fearful eyes as their life leaves their body." She laughed maniacally.
Her answer matched a psycho's, but he supposed he did get what he asked for. Coast poised himself. "Fine." He launched himself at the princess, ready to slash her head off in one blow.
Burn gasped at his sudden speed and parried for dear life. His sword violently clashed with hers, sparks flying off of them due to his sheer speed. Because of Burn's unprepared stance, he landed past her while she regained balance.
"Hmph!" Burn exhaled and rushed at him with her own strike. Coast wasn't going to back down. She swung her swords at him repeatedly, but Coast perfectly blocked every strike.
Even as Burn attacked from different angles with her and his brother's sword, Coast would block one then redirect it to block the other just in time. He wasn't sure where this newfound strength and skill had come from, but he sure as hell enjoyed the fearful look in Burn's eyes.
He never broke eye contact, staring into her black, soulless eyes with his purple ones. His stance never changed either, his poise was impeccable even to the largest of MudWings.
"I've had enough of you!" Burn yelled in rage, bringing her sword down over head. Coast again blocked it. Burn knew he would, which is why she attempted to stab him low with his brother's sword. Coast of course knew this plan. He redirected the sword he blocked to parry the one thrusting at his abdomen. He finally broke his unmoving stance to parry the thrust but keep blocking the slash. He now had his sword positioned over his shoulder, holding off Burn's blade.
Burn followed up these two strikes with a stab from her tail. Perhaps Coast was going insane, but the attack seemed so telegraphed that he swore he started countering before he even knew it was coming. He stabbed her tail barb straight through, impaling her most lethal weapon. He switched his grip on the hilt of his sword and stabbed the SandWing's poisonous barb to the ground, burying the top of his sword in the dirt.
Burn yelled in pain, which was music to his ears. The hissing of fire building up wasn't though. He used his sword to catapult himself over the fireball and then used gravity to help him slam his tail across her face.
Burn collapsed and for a second, Coast thought he won. However, Burn wasn't knocked out, just dazed. Coast spun around, ripping his sword free from the earth and Burn's barb. He used his tail to hold her's in place and brought the sword far over his head.
With a violent swing directly for Burn's head, his steel sword carved itself into her metal helmet, sliding down over the side of her lips and jaw. She bled profusely from the wound.
She tried to get him off of her by swinging at him again. Coast masterfully dodged and countered by stabbing his sword into her forearm. She grunted but ignored the pain to attack with the other sword. Coast repeated the process but this time slashed her wrist. Burn dropped the sword and yelled in pain.
Coast was ready to get this fight over with. He revered his grip and raised his sword to stab it into her throat. Burn caught the foible of the sword right before the point impaled her throat.
Coast struggled against her strength, but he'd be damned if he didn't kill her here. He grunted as he forced the sword down, but he didn't make any improvements. The hissing sound of fire being brought up came from Burn's mouth. It was now or never.
He screamed as he used every single cell in his body to force the sword down, slicing Burn's talons as he made progress.
Just before he could draw blood from her neck he had to jump backwards to dodge another spray of fire. Coast removed his tail from hers but at least got in another slash on her tail before he landed outside striking distance.
Burn scrambled to her feet, grabbing only her sword this time. She gasped for air as she stared him down. She looked tough, but he knew she was afraid of him. Coast didn't make a sound as he stood there, the burning exhaustion a second thought.
"You know what, SeaWing? I like you. I've never met anyone as skilled as you are," she said as she panted for air. "You have my respect, which isn't something I say a lot."
Coast remained silent, still poised to guard another attack.
"I hope one day we'll meet again so I can slay you. Until then, stay alive," she chuckled. Then she spread her wings and took off.
NO! I won't let you get away! He rushed after her, but only took a few steps before his legs exploded into a fiery pain. He collapsed and gasped desperately for air. He was so exhausted, so tired. Every muscle in him hurt to no end.
He laid there, taking fast, deep breaths as he watched his mortal enemy fly away. His brother still laying there, dead. He wanted to help him, he wanted to kill Burn, he wanted to go home.
Coast laid there and cried, so much grief and agony to pile on top of his physical and mental exhaustion. At least Burn had left his brother's sword.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Years later and he got news that the Dragonets of Destiny will be ending the war in a few nights. Obviously he wasn't going to miss Burn's demise.
He arrived there with a sea of other dragons, many of which he recognized from battles, ex-enemies now. He was happy to say that.
Seeing Burn bitten by a dragon bite viper was almost hysterical to him, seeing her scream in pain as poison destroyed her brain tissue. What a beautiful world.
After seeing Thorn become queen, he joined one of the small ring of dragons talking outside of Burn's stronghold. Or rather Queen Thorn's palace. When he got up to the dragons that were from all tribes, he noticed some of the non-SeaWings giving him worried glances.
"I'm guessing you know me?" He asked a SkyWing beside him, the main perpetrator of the weird stares.
"Yeah, I've heard some horrible stories about a SeaWing with purple eyes and a scar on his forehead."
He was proud of being a known nuisance to enemy forces. "Well, my fighting days are over from the looks of it, so you can cut the weird looks you're giving me," Coast said in a friendly tone. "All I wanted was Burn dead, and now I have that."
"Hm. My sister's battalion called you the Purple Rock. Said you had an otherworldly poise."
Coast couldn't stop the smile on his face. "I suppose that true, yeah."
"Well, you cut off my sisters arm. I was furious at first but that injury got her out of the war so, guess I can't be too mad."
He wished he could say the same for his older brother, but what's done is done. Maybe unconventionally, but he did kinda save a few dragons from death by beating them too severely to fight later. He pushed the thought aside and kept conversing with the other dragons, everyone else just as happy as he was the war was over.
AN:
Got a little bored and decided to write this whole thing in one night. Thought it was pretty cool so I hoped everyone enjoys. Maybe I'll get around to finishing the romance stories I have half-written 😅
