Chapter 4: Sleepover
I'll tell you the truth. Storms make me uncomfortable, unless I have someone with me. If I'm alone, I may just soil my pants, in all honesty.
Knowing my mom won't be home, in order to avoid me, I call Alex.
"Hello?"
"Hey, Alex," I greet, pacing back and forth in the living room.
"Austin!" His voice seems to lighten upon recognizing me. "What's up, man?"
I rub my forehead, in a stressed state. "Do you wanna come over and hang out?" I ask hopefully. "Maybe spend the night?"
"Sure!" he agrees almost immediately, making me raise an eyebrow. "I mean, uh, yeah."
I hear a chuckle escape my lips before I can help it. "Well, you should hurry, because the weather report says that we're do for a storm."
"Okay, I'll head over now." He hangs up the phone, making me chuckle. He's absolutely adorable. He reminds me of a little kid, one that is in a teenage body. And it isn't morally wrong for me to be attracted to him. Bonus.
Cleaning up the small amounts of dishes and trash strewn around the house, I decide to make some pasta for dinner. I stopped by the store on my way home, because we were running low on things like milk and sugar. So, I decided to splurge a little and buy some things in order to make pasta.
As I'm cooking up the chicken and vegetables, I hear the doorbell ring. Making sure the food won't burn, I open the door, greeting a disheveled looking Alex. I let him in and immediately head back to the kitchen. Thankfully, the food didn't burn. Taking it off the burner, I check the noodles, which are done boiling, and I strain them.
"I didn't know you cooked," Alex comments, leaning on the counter nearby.
I smile a little at that. "Oh, yeah. I'm the whole package," I joke, finishing the pasta.
Alex chuckles at me as I get out some plates. "You didn't need to cook for me," he reprimands gently, taking the plates.
"Maybe, I felt like showing off," I return, grabbing the silverware for each of us.
"You don't need to impress me, Austin," he tells me as I fill our plates up. "I already think you're amazing."
My face heats up at the compliment, and I can't help looking to my feet, feeling rather shy. "I'm not that great," I tell him quietly, glancing up to his face.
He smirks at me. "Don't sell yourself short. You're pretty awesome." He takes the plates to the dining table, successfully ending our conversation with the last word.
We eat together with comfortable small talk, joking around every once in a while. I feel so at ease with Alex, like we click together perfectly. I don't feel like I have to lie about being okay, because, when I'm with him, I am okay. I don't feel like I'm out of place. I don't feel like I'm some broken freak. I feel special when I'm with Alex. I feel like I matter. I feel like someone who is worth it.
Bringing our plates to the sink for later, I join Alex in the living room. I sit down about a foot away from him, even though I want to practically collapse on top of him. I swear that I see him frown out of the corner of my eye, but, when I glance over at him, his face is blank.
"Wanna watch a movie?" I ask, grabbing the remote and starting to channel surf.
I see him nod out of the corner of my eye, and decide on some action movie that's just started. As it goes on, I can tell that neither of us are really into the movie, but when did he get so close? I could've sworn that he was farther away earlier. A yawn escapes my lips, but I try to keep myself awake.
"We should probably head to bed," Alex tells me, gently resting a hand on my shoulder.
I nod and get up from the couch, tiredly staggering to my room with Alex in tow. I pull out a very thick long sleeve shirt and some pajama pants. "I'm gonna go change and stuff," I tell the brunette, leaving the room to change in the bathroom. I also brush my teeth and do my business.
Returning to the room, I'm greeted by a shirtless Alex, digging through his bag. He glances up and sees me standing there. "I sleep without a shirt," he explains blatantly.
I nod dumbly and sit on the bed. At least, I had enough sense to leave my gloves on. Alex leaves the room to brush his teeth, and I climb into bed. He comes back in a few minutes later, looking a little confused.
"Where do I sleep?" he asks, scratching the back of his head.
I roll over onto one side of the bed and pat the empty spot next to me. He climbs in without a word, laying on his side and facing away from me.
"Night, Austin."
"Goodnight, Alex."
