Day 15

In a situation of survival, people have been reported to eat what parts of nature they have around them. Many famines have caused people to resort to a strictly grass diet. Depending on the region, others have been known to survive off of baked clays.

No matter how desperate one is to survive, NEVER resort to cannibalism as a way to stay alive. A side effect to eating human flesh can be what is known as Kuru, which is a psychological disease that eventually leads to death. Even recent cannibals have been known to contract severe cases of Mad Cow Disease.

I have decided to have another day to myself, which is mostly being spent learning how to live without food.

Despite the fact we only have two days worth of food left, neither Aniston nor I have mentioned the food shortage to anyone. It is going to be difficult to tell them, since the people we are with aren't exactly the nicest. Maybe we should hide all of the sharp items beforehand.

I just... I don't know what we are going to do after everything runs out. We are all a little irritated, and we haven't bathed in weeks. When Aniston bursts the cafeteria doors open and shamefully says there's nothing left... I don't think the others are going to be very happy. But then what? Are people going to get desperate?

Of course they will. It doesn't matter how much someone cares about the people around them, they will get desperate. It's human nature. We have a will to survive. And sometimes, people need to do bad things in order to keep going.

No, I shouldn't think that way! I've been telling myself that I can't let myself go.

No... you can't avoid this anymore Clara! People are changing, you are changing. This place, this place where you thought you were free... it's getting to you. It's eating everyone up, and slowly but surely, it will make everyone crazy.

Especially when you tell them. There's nothing left.

You know, you've just admitted it. People get desperate.

By the end of this month, there won't be anything left.

Nothing.

"No!" I shout in my empty room, throwing the survival book across the floor. I try to breathe slower, and eventually calm my voice to a whisper. "There will be people here. Alive."

I open the door and step into the hall. It seems like it was empty here too. At least no one heard me.

~~~
"Aniston." I say, the nerves in my voice are obvious. "I can't hold this in anymore."
He sighs disturbingly casually and puts down the book he was reading. "Can't hold in what?"
"You know what I'm talking about!" I exclaim urgently, inching my face closer so no one can hear. "The shortage."
He gets up to put his book on the shelf, then returns to his seat. "Clara, I know how serious this predicament is. But I have finally concluded that I will accept it. It's our fate, it was meant to be."
"Don't fate me!" I scoff. "A few days ago you were up at 6 AM waking up everyone with this, and now you are perfectly fine with starving in a school?"
"Yes." He says, almost as if he has heard this a million times.
My anger is bubbling up inside me. I stand up and walk to a teacher's desk, picking up an ID card labelled "Ms. Lane". I study the card, examining the features of her aged face.
"Well Aniston" I sit back in my seat. "While you'll be "accepting your fate", I'll be keeping everyone safe."
I slide the card across the table, letting it fall onto his lap. He looks down at it after a few seconds, but I exit the room before he can respond.
