Chapter 2: Not as welcoming
The lights of the town had started to fill the night sky with an orange glow.
The town was small and it seemed that everyone but a few had headed inside for the night.
Dream decided to go up to one of the citizens, "Hello sir, we are travellers on a journey, do you by chance know a place we could rest?"
The old man looked at Dream, then at the group, He huffed, "No".
"No?"
"No".
Dream was bewildered at the unprovoked aggression, even if he asked so kindly.
"Hey. What gives, old man?" Killer snatched a knife off of Horror's shoulder, leaving his taller companion stunned.
"Don't." Dust growled at Killer,
Unshaken by the skeleton with a knife, the old man slowly walked away.
"What do we do now?" Blue asked, worried for his companion and mad at how the old man treated Dream.
Dream sighed, "I guess we could look around".
Nightmare was pissed at the mistreatment of his brother, but was mostly surprised that he felt mad for Dream's mistreatment.
There wasn't much they could do now, since all the other civilians that were outside saw their interaction with the old man and retreated into their homes, afraid of what the newcomers may do.
The town wasn't that big so it didn't take long for them to look around.
"Ugh, why doesn't this place have anywhere to stay? I'm freezing!" Dust rubbed his arms humerus, attempting to warm himself up.
Horror felt bad for his freezing companion, so he took off his hood and covered Dust with it. Dust sighed as the hood helped him with the cold.
"Look over there," Cross pointed at a small, wooden cabin, "We should check it out, maybe we'll find something".
The group agreed and continued their walk towards the cabin.
"Wait," Blue called, stopping the group from barging in, "We should knock first, it's more polite that way".
The gang gave him a blank stare, which made Blue uncomfortable. He was saved by Ink as he knocked on the door of the small cabin.
The door slowly creaked open, allowing what little light from the moonlight to enter through the door. This allowed Ink to peer between the open door into what seemed to be an abandoned house.
It was very dark inside the house, not was seen, but what was seen was by the limited moonlight that entered.
"Wow, it's dark," Ink commented, continuing to open the door wider. This allowed the moonlight to fill the house.
"Yeah, no shit Ink," Error snapped.
"We should look around, see if there's any dangers that lurk around," Cross suggested, stepping into the house.
The others followed suit, looking around the cobweb infested home. With the minimal light that the moon gave them, they were only able to spot a short hallway that had two doors on either side of it, beside the hallway leading to a small kitchen. The kitchen was old fashioned and was surprisingly tidy for being abandoned, yet it was so empty.
The main room they were standing in was a small living room, it had enough room for all of them to walk around freely, but not enough for them to stretch.
"Hey boss, there's only two bedrooms here!" Killer had poked his head out from one of the doors in the small hallway, "There's a bathroom too!"
'Jeez', Nightmare muttered under his breath, he guessed it'll do as the towns folk weren't of any help. "Alright, we must figure out who's staying with who." Nightmare mused, looking to his comrades, "There's nine of us, so that means we'll split into three groups, two groups will be in the bedrooms and the rest of us could stay here," he said as he gestured towards the couch.
"We should draw sticks!" Blue suggested, "It'd be more fair."
"With what sticks? And how will we know who will be staying where?" Dream asked.
Blue beamed at the group, causing Nightmare to flinch and Dream to sigh in relief from the positivity, "I have these!" The blue cladded male pulled out nine sticks with colours at the top, from behind his back.
"Where-" Horror questioned but was cut off by the cheerful skeleton.
"We will be using these! Now take your sticks."
Once everyone got their sticks, it was revealed.
"What! Why am I with Killer?" Dust exclaimed, throwing his stick to the ground.
It turned out that Dust, Cross and Killer were together, Blue was with Nightmare and Horror while Dream had Ink and Error.
"Can we switch?" looking towards KIller.
"Sorry pal, but I want to stay with Criss-Cross here," the empty eyed male placed his hands onto the soldier's shoulder.
Horror pouted, he wanted to stay with Dust.
Blue walked up to the very tall male, "Hey, um, I could switch with Dust so you both can be together if you like?"
Horror looked down at Blue, "Really? Wouldn't you mind?"
"No no, I don't mind at all, happy to help a friend out," Blue quickly reassured.
'Friend?' Horror thought before smiling at the shorter male. He then walked over to Dust who was arguing with Killer, as Cross was shuffling away from the mess.
"Dust..."
The said male turned his head towards the big guy, seeing that he was smiling, confused him. "What happened?"
Horor continued to smile, "You're staying...with Night and I".
Dust was shocked, "How?"
"Blue switched with you, so you can stay with us."
He smiled back at Horror, but quickly stopped smiling as he saw his boss walking towards them.
"I heard from Blue that you switched with him," Nightmare asked but more like stated.
Horror nodded. His boss nodded back at him and gestured for them to follow. It seemed like the others had already gone to their rooms, besides Dream's group. They were getting ready for bed in the room they were in.
Once they entered their room, it had a bed and a single recliner, surprising for such an olden themed home.
"Since you both are so close, you both can take the bed". Nightmare started to sit comfortably on the recliner.
Horror sputtered in embarrassment, realising what his leader suggested. "J-just close friends, that's all".
Nightmare's eye widened a little, that was the first time that Horror spoke in a complete sentence without needing to take a second.
Dust was saddened, he hoped his relationship with Horror was more.
"Oh... I guess we should rest now, it is getting quite late," Nightmare paused, "I believe Dream is going to teach us how to use our abilities in the morning".
The three settled into bed and let sleep take them.
✦•······················•✦•······················•✦
The sun seeped through the curtains of their room, waking the three skeletons' almost peaceful slumber.
Horror was the first to be awoken from his sleep. He felt arms wrapped around his waist, causing him to look towards the owner. He blushed when he realised that Dust had a tight hold on him, he couldn't get out. He didn't want to wake him up because he looked so peaceful.
"Are you alright?"
A voice startled him out of his thoughts, he looked towards the voice to see his boss staring at him.
"yeah..."
Horror could hear him chuckle.
"I'll go make breakfast." Horror announced.
Nightmare nodded, staying in his seat while Horror got up from the bed.
✦•······················•✦•······················•✦
Dust had just woken up, having also been woken up by the sunlight hitting the bed. Dust felt the emptiness of the bed as he sat up on the bed and looked around. Horror was missing, which Dust assumed may be in the kitchen.
"Good morning Dust" Nightmare greeted when Dust flinched and began to wake up more, "How was your rest?"
A small sound was made by Dust, "mm, g'mornin..."
Nightmare chuckled at his attempt to wake up. He got up from his seat and straightened up his clothes. Once he finished, he noted that he should get up now and began to walk out the door, leaving a still half asleep skeleton in the room.
The scent of beef and fruit floated in the air. Nightmare continued down the short hallway as the scent got stronger.
He got into the living room to see that Error had his back towards him and had taken the couch for himself. Beside the couch was Dream, he was awake and sitting on the floor next to Ink, who was asleep on Dream's shoulder.
Dream looked at Nightmare, "my shoulder is numb, please help".
Nightmare smirked, "how about no, Ink seems to be sleeping so peacefully, I wouldn't want to wake him up".
"Just come help me." Dream growled.
"Alright alright, I'll help." Nightmare chuckled while pushing Ink off Dream's shoulder, making Ink slump onto the floor. Surprisingly, Ink is still dead asleep.
"Why did you ask for my help? He didn't wake up after that push."
"I wanted to see if you would still help me, and it seems you did, brother," Dream smirked.
Nightmare huffed, "I wouldn't have, I just needed you to show me how to find my abilities."
"Yeah, yeah" Dream continued to smirked.
"I'm going to the kitchen, don't follow me" Nightmare walked off into the kitchen.
As he entered, Horror and Blue were in the kitchen, preparing breakfast while chatting with one another.
Blue noticed Nightmare enter the kitchen, "Good morning, Nightmare. How was your sleep?"
"It was fine" he replied as he stared at the Blue clad male, he nervously chuckled at the watchful gaze.
"Everyone should be getting up now." Horror then handed his boss his plate.
On his plate was some fruit that was unknown to him and what looked to be beef.
"I'm sorry but we couldn't find anything else, as there wasn't anything here." Blue noted.
Nightmare nodded and started to eat his food.
✦•······················•✦•······················•✦
More of the group started to come in and ate their meal, so now they were waiting for Dream to get ready to teach them how to find their skills.
"Alright, so is everyone here?" Dream clasped his hands together.
A chorus of affirmation followed, which allowed Dream to continue, "So you bring out your hand like this." He opens his right hand in front of him. Something similar to the inventory that they were all used to, appeared in front of them. They could see themselves, a box that was labelled as 'role' and some skills with a short description.
"Healer!!" Killer's voice startled the curious group, "Why the fuck am I a healer?!"
"Language!" Blue scolded, shaking his head at the furious murderer.
"What role did you get, Horror?" Cross asked.
Horror turned towards Cross, "I got the assassin".
"WHAT!" Killer yelled again, after hearing Horror's role, "Why couldn't I get something cool like big H!" The black eyed male continued to rant.
The gang ignored him as it was a common occurrence within their hideout. Continuing to talk to each other about their role.
"What did everyone else get?" Nightmare questioned.
"I got beast?" Dust revealed, unsure what the role meant.
"I think my role was tank", Cross answered.
"I-"
"We know Killer, you got healer." Error grumbled, "I'm a magic attack user."
Nightmare nodded as the group revealed their role, "I seem to be a magic defense user." Looking over to Error, "I don't think we have the same skill set, do we?"
Error paused for a minute so he could look at his skills, then shook his head, "I don't think so I have summon abilities and projectiles, but everything else seems to have a lock on it."
After Error had said that, Nightmare realised some of his skills are locked as well. 'Hmmm'.
"Are you lot finished with your chit chat, I'm starting to get bored." Ink pouted.
Error growled, but didn't say anything else.
Horror was sitting to the side, just watching the group.
"Yes, I believe we are done with our discussion." Nightmare confirmed.
"Since it seems that we're in a game, I think there should be some quests we could do." Dream suggested.
"Why would we do such minimal tasks?" Nightmare was disgusted at such a suggestion, a king like him wouldn't stoop so low into helping mere mortals.
"Come on, it could really help us find a way out."
"And how would that help?"
"Like I said, it could help."
The twins started to bicker, while the group groaned. They knew that they would start to argue about something like this.
Horror sighed, walking up to the twins, "We need food, I think we should look for some."
Nightmare sulked, he couldn't believe Horror would side with Dream, "fine, I guess it would do us some good."
Dream grinned at Horror, a silent 'thank you' was directed at the big skeleton.
Horror smiled back at the yellow cladded skeleton.
"Then it's settled, we are going into town to search for resources and quests!" Blue clasped his hands together, getting the attention of the others.
"What? No!" Killer was against the idea, as the old man from before lived in this town. All Killer wanted to do was to get out of here.
"I can't believe I have to agree with Dream, but Killer, we need to find a way out therefore, it's possible that this could aid us to freedom", Killer grumbled, Nightmare did make a point.
So the group decided that the best option was to go back to the town and find some clues.
