Out of Sight, Out of Mind

The five of them walked down the cave is silence, never coming to a fork. It was honestly kind of boring. The same stone walls, the same floor, the same sound. Sophie thought she would go crazy if something didn't change.

She started humming a happy little tune quietly as they walked, not sure where she'd heard it, but she liked it. At the start of the second verse, Biana and Fitz joined in, humming at slightly different pitches. Dex joined in a moment later with the occasional clap and Keefe joined in last, stomping his feet every once in a while and drumming on his chest.

Sophie looked around at her friends, grinning, as a memory flooded her mind.

She was sitting under a tree, surrounded by her friends, Dex on one side, Keefe on the other, with Fitz and Biana behind her. She was crying.

"I'm sorry, I don't know what's wrong with me," she said, sniffing. Keefe and Dex took her hands and and Fitz and Biana squeezed her shoulders. "I know," Keefe said.

"Absolutely nothing."

She smiled and found a new reason to get out of the cave. They had to get back and find their memories so they could be that happy group of friends again. Without having to worry about losing oxygen or going crazy in an endless tunnel.

After a while, Sophie stopped walking and leaned against the wet wall, sighing. "I don't know if we're ever going to get out," she muttered. Dex turned to Keefe. "Do you have the answer to your riddle yet?" he asked. Keefe shrugged. "I just assume it means find a pearl that glows smoky white. It's easy enough to answer, just not necessarily to find. Especially if this cave won't ever end."

"I've got an idea," Sophie said suddenly. "Since I'm the one with the memories, maybe I should go ahead a little bit and see if I find anything. If I find nothing, I could come back and tell you guys and we could head back to the cave. But if I find something, then I'll call you guys."

Fitz ran a hand through his hair. "But wouldn't it be easier if we just stayed together and all looked? What if something bad happens?" Sophie tapped her chin. "Okay, how about this, you four go ahead and try to find an end to this tunnel, I'll go back to the cave and see if I find anything."

Dex looked hesitant. "But why? Plus, what if we find a fork or something and get separated? Why do you want to be alone so badly?" Sophie tugged on an eyelash, flicking it to the ground. "I don't know. I just need to organize all the thoughts going through my mind."

Keefe cautiously put a hand on Sophie's shoulder. "We all have hundreds of thoughts going through our minds," he said, glancing around as if to make sure he was right. Dex, Biana, and Fitz nodded. "Wouldn't it be easier if we went through them together?" Sophie tugged out another eyelash.

"Please? I mean, what harm could it do? Plus, we'd be more efficient."

"I agree," Biana interrupted. "Besides, if we reach a fork or something we could just mark it so we know how to get back." There was a moment of silence and Sophie whispered, "Please just trust me." Keefe sighed, dropping his hand to his side. "Fine. But try and be quick, okay?" Sophie nodded. She paused before giving Keefe and quick hug and hurrying off in the direction they hQuest-Crushers

She smiled as she went down the path and mentally thanked Biana for agreeing with her. Wait... Sophie paused, creasing her brow. Who in the world was Biana? The girl was on the edge of Sophie's mind, but she couldn't reach it. She probably wasn't important, then. Sophie looked around the tunnel, confused.

What was she doing anyway? She frowned. Something involving caves...

"Sophie!" A hand grabbed her shoulder and jolted her from her thoughts, pulling her back. Two arms wrapped around her and the few memories she had came rushing back. Biana and Dex had scared looks on their faces and Fitz was breathing deeply, rubbing his temples.

Keefe hugged Sophie harder, before letting go. "What happened?" she asked. "I don't know," Fitz said with a shaky voice. "One moment, you were heading down the tunnel, then you disappeared. A couple seconds later, I could barely remember why I was looking down the tunnel and who I was looking for."

Keefe nodded. "It's like, as soon as you got too far away, you just disappeared from our memories. It took all my mental will to remember your name and where you had gone." Sophie rubbed her palms into her eyes. "Yeah, it was the same for me."

Dex ran a hand through his hair and whistled softly, "Well, we're not splitting up anymore." Fitz halfheartedly laughed and Biana chewed her lip, giving Sophie a small smile. "I don't remember you that much, Sophie, but losing you for those few seconds was really scary."

Sophie tugged out an eyelash. "I'm sorry, I didn't know that would happen." Dex shrugged. "Neither did we. But now we know." Fitz nodded and Keefe looked around. "So, I don't think you guys are going to like this, but...don't you think we should know how far away we can get from each other before we disappear? I mean, it would only take a moment. I just walk away from you guys for a couple steps, then jump back really quickly when I forget you guys."

There was a long pause. "I agree with Keefe, but, maybe you should go with someone? So you someone else to help you remember in case you get too far away?" Sophie nodded in agreement and Keefe shrugged, looking at her. "I know you just went through that by yourself, and it was scaring, but would you mind being my partner?"

Sophie shook her head and Keefe grinned, grabbing her hand and pulling her forward. She counted the steps. At six, Sophie could feel Dex's face fading from her mind and she jumped back, pulling Keefe with her. "Okay, six feet," she announced.

Everybody nodded. "Okay, I think that we should all have partners. Until we can figure out how to stop this," Fitz said. Biana nodded and turned to Sophie, "Wanna be mine?" Sophie opened her mouth to agree, but Dex jumped in. "I think you should be with your brother. Then Sophie, Keefe, and I can be a trio."

Keefe agreed and put his arms around Dex and Sophie's shoulders. "Team Quest-Crushers!" he announced. "Or maybe Questers." Dex laughed. "I think Quest-Crushers sounds better, but I don't know why it has to have quest in it. Maybe Riddle-Rats would be better." Sophie giggled. "Quest-Crushers actually sounds the best, sorry Dex." He shrugged. "It's fine."

Fitz looked at Biana and said, "We could be Riddle-Rats, I guess. Or just Riddlers." Biana smiled. "Riddlers is way better. Team Riddlers for the win!" She pumped her fist into the air and nudged Sophie in a playful way. "Okay, so it's decided. Teams Riddlers and Quest-Crushers are on a roll. Hiking through the Mary-Anna Trench -"

"Mariana Trench."

"Hiking through the Mariana Trench, on an awesome quest!" Keefe whooped and winked at Fitz and Biana. "Our team is totally better, even if the name isn't the greatest. Ya'll can be third if you want, but we count as two."

"That doesn't even make sense, Keefe," Fitz snorted. "Yes, it does. Two people per team, we have four."

"No, three. You, Dex, and Sophie." Keefe smirked. "Jeez, Fitz, get with the flow. Everybody knows I count as two people. Twice the man you'll ever be."

Fitz gaped at him and Keefe laughed, pulling Sophie and Dex a step ahead. "Come on! Let's crush this quest!"
