While Boruto's soft snoring was heard through the baby intercom on the kitchen table, Hinata was humming as kneading some cookie dough to make small balls between her hands.
She was about to put her new making on the cooking plate of the oven when two strong hands grabbed her waist.
One big smile appeared on her lips while Naruto humed her song close to her ear too. With her long hair held in a hairband, he took the opportunity to breath in her floral perfume against her neck.
Hinata shivered when her husband's voice went much lower than her own could do.
He then let his hands slide on her hips while gradually emphasising his touch to such an extent that he was almost digging and marking his wife's milky skin with his fingertips through her clothes.
"Naruto-kun, you're putting flour on my dress."
He then put his hands on her belly, caressing it and spreading a bit more flour on the fabric. "You're wearing an apron. It's like you were screaming at me to put my dirty hands here." he murmured, "Or maybe you want them higher."
His fingers were already at the curve of her breasts. Hinata chuckled before gently pushing him away.
"This time, I would like to finish those cookies before Boruto wakes up."
"Excuse me, love! Are you making allusion to the other time we had sex on this table?" Naruto asked before gobbling a little bit of dough scattered with chocolate chips.
She had told him not to do that anymore. But instead of repeating herself about the dough or about what he just said, Hinata blushed, looked away and focused on her task again.
"Because of you, they were all burnt. I had never seen Boruto so sad."
"Because of me?" Surprised, Naruto opened a brown sugar bag. "You kept getting me all worked up this afternoon."
"Me?" innocently asked Hianta.
"I can perfectly recall what you said," he nodded. "'Given we have to leave the dough to rest for thirty minutes, we could do something while we are waiting, Naruto-kun.'"
"And we should've stopped as soon as I put them in the oven." Hinata protested.
"That's exactly not what you were thinking back then."
He leaned forward to look at the weight the scale showed, but he couldn't help glancing at his wife biting her lower lip with force to prevent herself from smiling as the past events flashed in her mind.
"It's what I thought." He stood straight, but he never lost his smirk.
Naruto took the bowl full of sugar off of the scale and poured it in a bigger bowl before doing the exact same thing with the flour.
"But I believe that before I say this, you came to see me in the kitchen to distract me on purpose." Hinata added.
"Me?" innocently asked Naruto as he turned toward her.
"I can perfectly recall what you did," she nodded, miming him. "You were back from the garden after spending the whole afternoon under the sun. You came close to me and you asked me if I wanted to take a shower with you-"
"This proposition was with no ulterior motives-"
"Well, of course."
"I swear!"
"In that case, they would've come after."
They looked at each other from the corner of their eyes before smiling at each other.
There they go again, acting like they were nineteen years old all over again meanwhile their baby was sleeping upstairs.
From the corner of her eye, Hinata saw Naruto come closer step by step. Of course, she did as if she hadn't noticed it. And when she pretended she wanted to go to the sink to wash her hands, would you believe, he was on her way.
Face to face, Naruto looked down and Hinata looked up.
He leaned a bit towards her to have a better look at her pink cheeks. "What're you thinking about right now?"
His voice was extremely low and close to her ear as he brushed her arms with his dirty fingers.
Hinata bit her lips, came a bit closer to him. When he wanted, Naruto knew how to play with her libido.
Suddenly, an alarm made them jump and they looked at the oven.
The first batch of cookies was ready.
They looked up at the clock then the couple looked at each other again. Hinata then nobbed to answer Naruto's quiet question.
It was time to wake up their little monster.
"We'll do it another time, then." He whispered as if someone could hear him.
"I hope so," she replied while tapping his chin.
Then, they went in two different directions.
Naruto went to the sink to wash his hands while Hinata opened the oven and took out the well-cooked cookies. As she put it down on the table, Naruto passed by her to steal a kiss from her.
After having won a smile from her, he went upstairs to wake up their son from his nap.
Through the baby intercom, Hinata heard the bedroom door open, then the CD player stopped and finally Naruto's soft voice rose to wake up Boruto without a start. "Booolt... It's time to wake up."
Naruto pulled the blanket and narrowly avoided a kick aiming for his nose. Boruto sighed then rolled on his side to stretch. A grunt echoed when he pushed away with his two hands his father's own that kept shaking him in every direction.
"Do you want me to tell you a secret?" Naruto asked, his faceover his son. "Kaa-chan and tou-chan made cookies."
"It's not true." the kid mumbled, rubbing his eyes.
"You were sleeping. How can you know what happened? Plus, I always say the truth."
"I'm sure only kaa-chan made the cookies. And you just looked at her and ate the dough."
Naruto opened and closed his mouth a few times, wanting to say something back. But if he was doing it, he would've been a lie. "You're right, but this time, I really, really helped her. Come and you'll see."
Boruto streachted one more time, but didn't move from his bed. Naruto pouted before leaning downwards towards his son and whispered something to him that Hinata couldn't hear.
It was dead silent when she opened the oven once again to slide inside a second batch of cookies.
Suddenly, she heard noises loud of steps in the corridor upstairs to the stairs, then several jumps at irregular intervals.
"Boruto! I already told you not to jump in the stairs!" Naruto said then softened. "You could fall."
His son stopped and waited for him to approach him and take his hand.
With his father's and barrier's help, Boruto did his best to lift his little legs up to go down the huge steps. Once on the ground floor, he let go of Naruto's hand and ran to the kitchen.
"Kaa-chan!" he screamed.
She turned around and saw her son with a huge orange cardboard shaped in a fox head mask before his face. Cardboard that Naruto and Hinata had spent the whole day cutting, sticking together and painting to finish Boruto's costume before he could go collect sweets with his friends during their last Halloween party.
"Hello, my love. Look at you, all energic, aren't we?"
Boruto sticked out his chest with pride which made Kurama chuckle loud enough for Naruto to hear him in the back of his mind. He knew that deep down the bijuu was moved to be liked by his son. However, he didn't take the opportunity to tease his companion today since his son was monopolising all the attention.
"...it's tou-chan!" Boruto was practically vibrating with excitement. "He said you've something important to tell me. Something my friends don't have!"
A few days back, Mirai had had to babysit the small group of children for a day. Everything went well, except that Boruto had come back with a grumpy look on his face before claiming that he was a big boy and that he knew how to take care of important things, but nobody ever took him seriously. When Naruto reported his words to Hinata, she decided to use that to annonce him that he would have to become responsible with the future little member of the family.
Facing her son's blue and bright eyes, Hinata gave him a soft smile and asked him if he wanted a cookie. Cookie he put in his mouth in one go.
"Easy, Boruto." His father said. "You'd choke yourself."
Chewing slower, Boruto curled his fingers under his chin and murmured his apologies. "So... You gonna tell me?"
"Of course, love. Let's sit down. Can you take the cookie jar with you?"
Boruto nodded as he held his hands out for Naruto to give him the "sacred tresor" his mum had cooked. He then turned and ran to the sitting room while his parents exchanged an encouragement gaze.
They didn't know how it was going to go.
If Hinata had been impatient to announce the news to his son a few days before, now having come back down to earth and with hindsight, she felt the apprehension knot in her stomach.
Even if she was older than her son when her own mother was expecting Hanabi, Hinata had no memories of this period.
Therefore, it was a first one for everyone.
Plus, it was difficult to speak about that to a four-year-old child, so explaining this to a two-year-old baby might be even harder.
Fortunately, Naruto's hand took hers and gently squeezed it for comfort.
A new smile given to each other and they made their way to the sitting room.
No sooner had they sat than Boruto quickly climbed on Naruto's lap and dove his hand into the cookie jar. As he was leaving crumbs around his mouth, he eyed his parents already looking at him tenderly.
"Ok, Bolt. Ready?" Naruto asked.
The young Uzumaki nodded, unable to wait any longer.
"You're going to prove to everybody that you're a big boy because we're going to give you a mission."
"A mission?" the kid repeated. "Like tou-chan's doing?"
"Yes and this mission is really difficult, that's why kaa-chan and tou-chan are counting on you for helping them." Hinata continued
"Huh-huh, I'm ready."
And when she looked at his blue eyes, almost identical as his father's, she noticed curiosity and the honesty of his words.
There was no fear or solitude.
Because he was loved and surrounded.
What Naruto and Hinata didn't have at his age. Yet, they had succeeded at built a healthy and peaceful place.
Boruto couldn't have a bad reaction when he would hear the news. He might even understand what Hinata failed to do when her father told her she was going to be a big sister.
"You're going to be a big brother." Hinata finally announced and it sounded so natural to her ears.
Her boy's eyebrows frowned then his eyes sparkled. "A big brother?" he repeated.
"Yes and you'll have to show us you're a careful big bother with the baby." Naruto continued.
Boruto looked at his father then to his mother when she took his tiny hand in hers to place it on her belly. "The baby is in here, Boruto."
"Oh! Like tou-chan?"
His parents laughed at the reference and Kurama made a face. He consoled himself with the thought that this tiny human would understand things better in the future.
"It's more complicated than that, Bolt."
His blue eyes then were filled with worry. "But... But it must hurt."
"Not at all," assured Hinata. "It's for protecting the baby because it's fragile."
Wanting a confirmation, he looked up at his father who smiled. "That's why when the baby is with us, the whole family will have to protect and take care of it. Do you understand, Boruto?" asked Naruto.
The blonde nodded before removing his fox mask to give it to Naruto then he slid between his parents and put his two hands on Hinata's belly.
She smiled "Are you happy?"
"Yeah. It bangs hard in here." Boruto answered, touching his chest where his small heart was beating. "It bangs for kaa-chan, for tou-chan and for the baby."
"Oh, honey. We love you too."
Hinata cupped her son's face to cover it with little feather-like kisses. With tears at the corner of his eyes, Naruto looked at his small family before taking them in his embrace as Boruto's laugh rose in the sitting room.
