Fear will always grip us at some point in our lives. Doesn't matter when, doesn't matter how, it just will. It's an inevitable occurrence that we can only lean back in our seats and wait for.
I don't think anyone ever really expects the first major appearance to be when you're nothing more than just a defenseless child. However, it happens more often than it should. It can happen because of something at school, at the park, at home. Sometimes it disgusts us to even think it can happen at home, however it does and many of our generation's youth are left to feel frightened of the one place they should feel safe. Most cases are taken care of and the young are sent away where hopefully they'll find a better home while the parents are sent to find a better cell. In his case, it was never stopped until he was finally of age and could leave the nest and fly in his own direction.
Fear can also be rooted via our relationships in many, many ways, not just the one you're thinking of. Fear in relationships can be of that special someone leaving or going to someone else while still with you or their hand hovering by your head until it finally makes that swoop and you're down on the ground. However, it can also be presented by verbal attacks. You may have stepped into relationships door with confidence and pride but when you go through, all that can be stripped away, leaving a weak shell of your former self. It scares us all that something like that can happen just because we loved someone. Once it's done, we fear that it will happen again and we close ourselves away from the idea of ever loving again. It scares us that we aren't putting in enough, that they'll go and do things because we aren't enough. We have to be enough for them, we can never be too little. Too little and you're gone. He believes that anyway.
Friendships often spawn fears, most are unintentional. Whatever the case, friendships can be scary. Scared of losing your friend. Scared of your secrets being spilled. Scared of them going behind your back. Sometimes even metaphorical friendships can give us fear. Our friendship with time is a prime example. Time is the foundation that our entire lives are built upon. It moves us forward and gives us new chances. However the thought of passing time scares some people. The thought of aging or prized moments passing us by hurts more than it should. When we should look forward to the new moments coming to replace the old, some despise it with all their being. They work hard to ensure that time won't stand triumphant over their worn and old bodies. They try so hard to not waste those precious minutes that they have before they pass. Becoming old and worn is so close, you can almost taste it. It can't happen, not yet. Not when there's so many more things to do. That's what his head kept telling him.
