Chapter Seven; Don't You Have Nerves?

Nicole's POV

After having my delicious dinner, I bid my parents good night and stayed in my room, looking out the window.

The stars looked so abundant in the sky as I stared at them.

Ever since I was a little girl, the stars seemed to be a mystery to me. I always wanted to know why they were there and why they were so pretty. But when I studied more and actually found out what they were, it only fascinated me more. Though, no one can really explain what they truly are, I don't mind. I just enjoy the calmness and euphoria I feel when I stare at them.

I let out a heavy sigh as I left the window sill. I left my window open to let in the cool night breeze. I walked over to my bed and switched off the lights before laying down.

I placed my glasses on my bedside table. I closed my eyes, ready to doze off, when I heard something move outside. It sounded like someone was using our ladder.

I scurried off my bed and quickly grabbed my Oxford dictionary that was laying on the floor and stood near the window. I was studying new words and I forget to place it back on the bookshelf, so don't blame me?

A black hooded figure jumped into my room and looked around. I felt the adrenaline pump into my veins as I clutched the big book of words tighter. I swiftly used it to hit the back of the figure's head as he fell to the ground.

He groaned out in pain as I continued whacking him with the dictionary. "How dare you come into my room?" I asked, still whacking the hooded man.

Suddenly, he grabbed my wrist and pushed me on the ground. He climbed on top of me and pinned me to the ground with his two hands. I was about to scream for help, when the hood fell off his head and the moonlight coming out from outside reflected on his face.

"Wes?" I questioned as he smiled at me awkwardly.

He chuckled nervously, "The one and only."

I furrowed my eyebrows, "What are you doing here?"

"I...uh..." He stammered. That's when I realized our current position and the close proximity of our faces. I felt the heat rush up to my face as I looked away from his piercing blue eyes.

I mean, what will one think if they saw Wes sitting on top of me?

He quickly got off me and helped me stand up from the floor. He cleared his throat awkwardly, "I..came here to talk go you."

I folded my arms over my chest, trying to sound as intimidating as possible even though my cheeks were still burning a little, as I asked, "And couldn't wait till tomorrow?"

"I knew you wouldn't talk to me." He countered as I kept silent, giving him a sign to continue, "I'm really sorry for everything that happened."

I scoffed, "I seriously don't get why you are apologising to me."

He looked confused as he said, "Then who should I apologise to? I mean, you're the one mad at me."

"Wes, of course I'm mad at you. You hit someone and caused them to go to the school nurse. I appreciate your apology but I'm not the one who needs it. Sam is. It might not change what you did to him but at least it will show you are a bit remorseful for what you did." He nodded his head slowly and gave me a tight lipped smile.

"You're right." He said before wincing out in pain after he rubbed his forearm lightly.

My hands dropped to my sides as I rushed to his side, worry being my only expression, "Are you alright?" I asked, my voice full of concern for the ash-blonde teenage boy standing in the middle of my room.

His blue eyes landed on me as he simply smiled, "Yeah, I'm fine."

I frowned because he was obviously lying about his present state, "No, you're not fine." He rolled his eyes at my antics, "Let me see."

He looked back at me with a confused expression, "See what?"

I pointed at his forearm. He hesitated at first before unzipping his black hoodie and removing it from his body as I quickly held my breath at the sight.

I know I shouldn't have thought about it, I know I shouldn't have stared but I couldn't help myself. He had a well defined torso. His abs were visible on his shirt and his arms were no joke either. It wasn't that large but they were muscular.

"Are you gonna help or stare at me all day, lil lady?" Wes smirked as I felt heat creeping to my cheeks.

I looked at the ground, to prevent Wes from seeing the blush on my face and walked closer to him. I felt his blue eyes on me as I looked away from the ground and moved my eyes to his bruised forearm.

"What happened?" I asked with worry.

"I don't know." He countered as I forced him to sit on the edge of my bed. I ran into my bathroom and brought out the first aid kit.

"How can someone not know when they get injured?" I spat as I looked through the first aid kit in a hurry, "I mean, don't you have nerves?"

He rolled his eyes, "Why are you acting lil lady, just admit it?"

I looked away from the first aid kit and arched my eyebrow at him, "Admit what exactly?"

"That you are worried about me." He smirked as he studied my expression.

I hit his bruised arm lightly as he let out another wince. I giggled lightly as I spoke, "At least we know you have nerves."

Wes frowned at my joke while I couldn't help but chuckle. The expression on his face while he held his arm was priceless.

"You know you're supposed to apply some ice on it, right?" Wes asked in an annoyed tone. I turned to him with a blank look. He must think that I'm stupid or something.

I knew how to cure a bruised arm but I got....distracted, that's all.

"Of course I do." I muttered as I got up and carefully walked to my room door. I quickly turned back to Wes, "Don't make a sound and most importantly, don't touch me anything."

Wes gave me a two finger salute before I walked out the door.

I have to take extra precaution when walking down the staircase in the middle of the night. My mom literally sleeps like a Tigress, the slightest sound can wake her up. That was why I was trying to be very careful. But my dad, on the other hand, sleeps like a rock. He doesn't move nor make a sound. Sometimes I think that he's dead but when I see his chest rising and falling, I feel relieved.

I tiptoed for my life because if she caught me outside of my room by this time of the night, I'll have a lot of explaining to do. After, I managed to get down the staircase, I made my way to the kitchen.

I carefully opened the refrigerator and brought out a pack of frozen peas.

I was about to close it and go away scot free when I heard a voice say, "What are you doing with that?"

I closed my eyes at my dumb luck and slowly turned around, only to be face to face with Wes. He leaned on the kitchen island with a smirk on his face. I glared at him as I resisted the urge to throw the packet of frozen peas at his head. "Did I give you a fright?" he asked.

"I thought I told you to stay upstairs." I gritted through my teeth.

Wes simply shrugged his shoulders and walked towards me slowly, "It got boring upstairs."

I sighed in frustration, "I wasn't even gone for two minutes."

"Yeah, the two of the most boring minutes of my life." Wes whined like a toddler as he propped his elbows on the kitchen island and rested his head on his hands. He actually looked kinda...

Cute.

I smiled at him as he returned the smile back. I honestly don't know how long we stood there looking at each other but it seemed pretty long.

He was just smiling at me, looking into my brown eyes while I was doing the same, staring into his entrancing blue eyes.

Suddenly, I saw a figure coming down the staircase at the corner of my eye. I turned to Wes with a surprised look. He must have seen what I saw too because his mouth dropped to the ground.

I quickly shoved Wes to the ground and hid him beside the kitchen island. I placed a finger on my lips and told him that if he made a sound, I would personally kill him. He nodded nervously while I turned to the mysterious figure that came down the staircase.

It was my dad. He was wearing his usual joggers and tee, but he didn't look tired at all. He didn't even look like he was asleep.

"Nicole, what are you doing down here by this hour?"I heard my dad ask as I handed him an awkward smile.

"I..uh..brusied my leg a little." I lied, showing him the packet of frozen peas in my hands. My father let out a sigh and rubbed his temples.

"You are being so careless these days." He walked towards me, "Let me see."

"No." I blurted out. I glanced at Wes, who was biting his bottom lip nervously, before looking back at my dad. He had a bewildered expression on his face. "Don't worry, I can do it on my own."

My father raised his arms in defence as he walked back to the living room, "So why are you awake by this time of the night?" I asked.

He flopped on the couch and replied, "I couldn't sleep. Besides, when I heard someone coming down the staircase, I thought that we were being robbed."

I ran my hand through my hair as I stared at my dad. He was just laying on the couch and I knew it would be impossible to take Wes upstairs without my dad spotting him.

"So..." I said rubbing my forearm, "Are you going back upstairs?"

"No, I'll just watch TV till I feel tired." My dad grabbed the remote control from the table and switched on the TV.

I groaned in frustration. I turned to Wes. He was handing me a questioning look, "What's wrong?" He mouthed.

I pointed at my dad as he peeked over the kitchen island to look at him. I scanned my mind for possible ideas.

And then I got it!

I turned to Wes, "On my signal, run upstairs." I whispered to him as he nodded his head.

I walked up to my dad and placed a hand on my head. His eyes met my figure as I sat stood directly in front of him before saying, "I have a headache, dad."

He furrowed his eyebrows as he stood up to my height. I glanced back at Wes, who was peeking over the counter waiting for my signal.

My loving father, quote on the term loving, simply rolled his eyes and said, "First it was your knee, now your head. Stop being so overdramatic and go take somewhere painkillers."

I pouted a little at his lack of concern. I mean, I'm his daughter he is supposed to care about me a lot, even if I just get a splinter. "Dad," I practically whined, "I'm being serious. My temperature is rising quickly."

"Then, go take some painkillers." he said in a monotone voice.

I looked back at the kitchen but I couldn't see Wes. He must have still been hiding behind the counter. He had to go upstairs or else I'll be in a lot of trouble.

I bit my nails, it was a usual habit of mine. I do it whenever I'm deep in thought.

My brown orbs suddenly landed on the remote which was lying on the armrest on the couch where my dad was sitting. I simply used my fingers to brush against it, without him noticing, and caused it to fall on the floor.

My dad loves the TV in our home more than any other object. When I was a kid, he usually told me to never play with the remote. According to him, the remote is the TV's baby so nothing should ever happen to it or else mommy TV would be very angry. And as dumb as it sounds, I believed him.

The remote crashed onto the ground as the batteries poured out of it. My dad quickly bent down to pick it up as he said, "Nicole, how many times have I told you to stop messing around with the remote control?" He was about to stand to his full height when I pushed him down again by accident.

"Sorry, dad." I apologized quickly as I turned back to the kitchen.

Wes suddenly peeked out of his hiding spot and I pointed at the staircase. He took that as his cue to leave and ran as quickly and as quietly as he could up the staircase.

I let out a sigh of relief as I looked back at my father, who has an annoyed expression on his face. "Nicole, I've told you that if you want my attention there are other ways to do it."

I pressed my lips into a thin line as I received a scolding about how I should stop trying to get his attention and also about harming his remote control.

After what felt like forever, my dad went back to his room, suddenly feeling the urge to sleep while I grabbed another packet of frozen peas and ran to my room.

I closed my door and locked it. I let out a sigh as I turned to the ash blonde teen sitting on my bed. Wes looked at me with an apologetic smile, "Sorry, about getting you into trouble down there."

I shrugged my shoulders and walked up to him, gently pressing the frozen veggies on his bruised hand. "Just leave it there for a minute or two." I instructed as he gave a light nod.

I plopped down on my bed, beside him and closed my eyes briefly. I was tired and honestly, I wanted him to leave. I forgave him but I need my sleep!

I opened one eye and was shocked to see Wes staring at me. My gaze locked with his gaze but he didn't look away. He seemed so confident. The staring became a little uncomfortable, so I broke the gaze first.

Wes cleared his throat awkwardly before saying, "I think that's enough for one night." He shuffled off my bed and dropped the peas on my bedside table. He grabbed his hoodie and slipped it on, hiding his glorious torso away from my sight.

I stood up too and walked closer to him, not really knowing what to say. "I...uh..guess I'll see you in school." I mumbled as a smile spread across his face.

"Yeah, I will." He walked towards the window and was about to climb out when I held his wrist.

"Please don't tell anyone about our encounter tonight." I said with pleading eyes.

He looked genuinely confused but he smiled and nodded, "I won't."

With that said, he sent me a flirtatious smirk and winked at me, before climbing out the window. I rolled my eyes as I watched him disappear into the night.

Finally feeling the urge to sleep again, I locked my window, not ready to deal with anymore chances of someone sneaking into my room, turned to my bed with a wide grin and laid down. I removed my glasses and covered myself with the sheets.

I smiled as I thought of Wes and his silly antics. He wasn't the same person that beat up Sam. No. That person that was here with me was the genuine Wes, the one that I first laid eyes on today.

I've seen the flirty side and angry side of Wes, it's nice to see him genuine for once.

And with the thoughts of Wes filled in my head, I slowly drifted off to sleep.
