Chapter 62 - Forever Mine
20th of April, 1998
Brooklyn is 32, Janet is 31, and Michael is 39
Brooklyn: "Mrs. Jackson!"
"Brooke, where are you?!"
"Brooklyn!"
I sniffled and wiped my tears as my entire family and the staff yelled my name through the ranch.
This was truly the first time I appreciated it being so big.
I knew there was no way I'd be getting out of here soon, so hiding seemed like the right solution. No one has found me for the last couple of hours.
"Brooke!" Jermaine called.
His voice got closer, and the fear that someone finally found me crept in.
In just a few seconds he appeared from between the trees, sighing in relief when he saw me.
"There you are... You had us all worried sick..." he said.
"Go away, Jermaine." I mumbled, wiping my face.
He took a seat next to me and pulled me into a hug.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
"Mike and Janet called everyone, they said you disappeared." he answered as he rubbed my back gently.
"I'm sure he didn't tell you why..." I rolled my eyes.
"He did."
I pulled away from his embrace.
"I don't get him," I said. "He wants a divorce, and when he finally gets it he's sorry."
"That's 'cuz he still loves you."
"Bullshit, Jermaine. If he loved me in the first place he wouldn't even think about it."
Jermaine snorted. "You don't really believe that."
"I don't know what to believe anymore."
"Well, I'm gonna go tell everyone I found you." he smiled, standing up.
I pulled him arm and he landed on his ass.
"Ow! Damn it, that hurt!" Jermaine whined.
"Don't dare call anyone. Especially not Michael."
"Jermaine?! Is that you?" Michael was heard from behind the trees.
Just my luck. Thanks, Jermaine.
"Oh, thank God you found her!" Michael gasped once he saw me.
I stood up and passed him, not giving him any attention.
"Brooke, wait, please!" he begged as he ran after me.
I kept walking towards the house.
Everyone's eyes were on us when Michael grabbed my hand and pulled me to him.
"Michael, just let me go..." I said, trying not to avoid his eyes.
"No, you won't run away from me this time," he stated and grabbed my face in two hands. His piercing brown eyes looked into mine with so much sadness, it actually hurt. "I love you. I will never stop. You have to know that."
"But you can't be married to me anymore." I murmured. The lump in my throat started forming again.
He looked at me for another brief second before crashing his lips onto mine. One of his hands was placed on the back of my neck to keep me from pulling away.
The kiss reminded me of the kiss we shared on our wedding day, when we sealed our marriage that was now over.
It was full of passion and love. But most of all it was comforting.
Butterflies formed in my stomach as he deepened the kiss.
Michael pulled away to breathe and the tears were staining his cheeks.
His face flushed red when he realized everyone just saw us.
"Is my dad here?" I questioned.
He let go of me, nodding.
"Maybe we both need a few days to think... I'll go to dad's for a while, okay? You stay and figure out where you want us to go from here. I'll do the same."
"Take the kids, they need you more than they need me." he told me.
"I-"
"Just take them."
I kissed his cheek, feeling the saltiness of his tears.
Of course, my dad was waiting for me with open arms when I approached him.
~
Michael: "It's gonna turn out fine, Mikey. We've all been separated and divorced before." Jermaine said as he watched me plop down on my bed.
"Yeah, Mike." Tito agreed.
"We're not separating." I mumbled into my pillow.
"Wait, what?"
"I want to be with Brooke... I just don't want to be married to her." I explained.
They stared at me, confused.
"Damn, no wonder she was so upset. You're messing with her heart." Jermaine huffed.
"I am not! It's simple."
"I think we need to teach Mikey a little lesson about women," Tito smirked. "You can't ask a woman for a divorce if you want to keep your relationship goin'. It doesn't work like that. Brooklyn is so damn upset with you because she can't understand if you still want her or not."
"I do, and I made that clear to her."
"But you also told her you want a divorce. She's a woman, Mike, they have a mind of their own. They understand what they want to understand." he rolled his eyes.
Jermaine nodded. "Tito's right, bro. Show her that you want her, or else she won't know it."
I want her. Damn it, I need her.
"I swear, Mike, if you drive her away from this family, I'll personally beat your ass."
I looked at my two brothers, "Will you help me?"
"I thought you'd never ask!" Jermaine smiled, helping me up.
"So what do I do?"
"Hmm," he furrowed his eyebrows, looking like he was deep in thought. "This might work... And don't get mad, but I don't think what you two need is a divorce."
"Jermaine-"
"Just listen. You told me your marriage was over... But, what if you guys get married again?"
"Like renew our vows?" I questioned.
"Yeah, something like that."
The room fell silent, until the smile crept to my face.
"Ooh, I think we have a wedding to plan!" Tito said excitedly.

Brooklyn is 32, Janet is 31, and Michael is 39
Brooklyn: "Auntie Brooke, grandma says you have to come downstairs!" Jason knocked loudly on the door.
I groaned, covering myself up. There was no way I was getting out of bed after spending the whole night trying to get Paris to sleep.
"Come on, auntie Brooke! Uncle Mike is here!"
My eyes shot open when he said Michael's name, and I dashed out of bed.
It took me almost no time to get ready. I looked at myself in the mirror for a brief second to fix my hair.
When I realized I was wasting time, I rolled my eyes at myself.
He's seen you in much worse conditions than this.
These last few days away from him were awful.
The kiss we shared helped me understand how much he actually loves me. How much he wanted me.
I was going to give him the divorce, for sure. After thinking about it, I knew that no matter how much we would try, this marriage was going nowhere.
~
I was super happy to see Michael with open arms when I came downstairs.
He looked at me, unsure, but I just ran into his arms.
We kissed for what seemed like only a second, until dad decided to interrupt.
"Michael, didn't you say we were going somewhere?"
"Oh, yes!" Michael chirped, putting me down. "Come on, babe, we have to get home!"
I raised my eyebrows.
"What are you so excited about?" I asked.
"You'll see."
~
"Janet, we're home!" Michael's voice echoed through the house when he closed the door.
Janet squealed as she ran towards us, "We need to get you ready!"
"Ready for what? Why isn't anyone telling me anything?" I frowned.
"Just go with her, baby. I promise you'll love it." Michael said, pushing me towards her.
"But we have things to talk abou-"
Before I could finish, Janet pulled my hand and led me up the stairs.
She took me to our bedroom.
"Get in the shower. You have 15 minutes."
~
I came out of the bathroom with a towel around me, noticing a makeup kit, hair supplies, and a white garment bag on our bed.
"Sit, and close your eyes." my best ordered.
I gave her a look.
"Oh, come on, trust me."
I nodded and sighed, then closed my eyes.
~
Janet: "Open you eyes." I told Brooke once I finished zipping up her dress.
"Oh, my... What's the occasion?" she asked, gaping at herself in the mirror.
"You'll find out soon," I smiled mischievously. "Now, let's go! We'll be late!"
~
Brooklyn wouldn't stop asking where we were going as we drove through the Neverland ranch.
"You are so impatient." I groaned.
"Well, sorry. I thought Michael and I were going to talk about the divorce-"
"Don't say that word anymore. It's jinx." I cut her off.
"Why would it be-"
"NO MORE QUESTIONS!"
I was so close to blowing this whole thing off. Michael would murder me if I accidentally let something slip.
Brooke scoffed and turned her back to me.
"Is- is that a tent in the middle of my lawn?" she gasped.
"Yup. And that's our destination." I said.
~
Brooklyn: The tent was decorated with flowers and lights. It shown slightly since it wasn't dark yet.
The white dress Janet put me in matched the color of the roses that were everywhere.
"After you." she smiled.
The tent was filled up with people. I recognized most of them.
Michael was nowhere to be seen, though.
"Go mingle! Say hello to everyone." Janet said, giving me a light push towards the crowd.
~
Michael: "They arrived, Mike," Jermaine informed. "You ready?"
I nodded. He gave me the little blue box, and I put it safely in my pocket.
"Go get her, Mikey." Randy patted my shoulder.
"Thank you for helping me do this." I thanked all of my brothers.
We shared a giant family hug before they joined me into the big tent.
~
Brooklyn: I was just talking to one of Michael's and Janet's cousins.
Suddenly, Michael's soft voice was heard through the tent.
"Um, hi. Can everyone hear me?" he asked shyly.
"We can hear you, Mike!" someone exclaimed.
He looked so handsome with a black tux on.
Michael blushed deeply and continued.
"Thank you all for coming. Most of you probably don't know why you've been invited to a celebration, but I promise it's worth it."
"Brooke," he called. "Would you please come here?"
I walked over to where he was standing, a little skeptical.
What is he up to?
~
Michael: I pulled Brooklyn close to me, looking at the DJ and giving him a thumbs up.
The first notes of George Michael's 'Kissing a Fool' started playing.
"Dance with me?" I offered Brooke a hand.
"With all these people watching?" she whispered.
I rolled my eyes. "Millions of fans watch us dance on tour, and you're afraid to dance in front of people you know?"
She giggled and took my hand.
"But remember this,
Every other kiss, that you ever give, long as we both live
When you need the hand of another man, one you really can surrender with
I will wait for you, like I always do
There's something there that can't compare with any other..."
I kissed her tenderly just as the song ended, then let her go.
"I thought divorce was the right thing to do... But then Jermaine suggested something that seemed perfect." I said.
I went down on one knee as I took out the little box and opened it.
A few people around us gasped.
"I know this last week was probably the worst for you, with everything going on... With Linda, and what we had planned. But I realized, with the help of my brothers, that getting divorced wasn't what we need. Brooklyn, I love you. So much. You have given me a family. You are everything I ever need.
Would you please marry me? Again?"
I held the ring box higher to show her.
It was the same ring, but there was one tiny detail. I had 'Forever Mine' engraved inside it.
'Aw's' and 'ooh's' were heard, and we were both blushing.
"A- are you serious?" Brooke asked.
"Very serious, babe. I can't lose you." I answered.
"Okay. Let's get married again."
I smiled wider than ever, sliding the ring back on her finger, where it belonged.
~
Brooklyn: Michael held my hand tightly as he said 'I do'.
It was my turn, and I said it with so much pride.
I couldn't be happier. I had him back, and we weren't getting divorced. No, we were getting re-married.
"You may kiss the bride." the pastor smiled.
We kissed, making everyone cheer.
"I love you." Michael whispered.
"I love you, too." I whispered back and gave him another kiss.
~
Michael and Prince danced with everyone while I was greeting people, and introduced them to Paris, along with Katherine.
"Isn't she beautiful?" my aunt Rose beamed.
"Just like her mother." Katherine chuckled.
"Is Michael around here?" Emma asked.
Georgie rolled his eyes at her, "This is his wedding, Em, of course he's here."
"I think I saw him talking to some people next to the buffet, dear." my mother-in-law said.
"Thank you, Mrs. Katherine!" my cousin chirped, and ran towards the big buffet table.
"I can't believe she still has a crush on him. The posters are still all over her room, by the way." her brother crossed his arms.
I laughed and hugged him.
"Georgie, she isn't that different from other teenage girls."
"But he's family, it's weird."
I looked up and noticed La Toya with Lisa Marie.
What the hell are they doing here?
"Excuse me, I need to go take care of something." I said, walking over to where Emma found Michael.
I swear, it looked like he was talking to a fan.
"Hey, guys," I smiled. "Em, can I steal my husband for a second?"
"Do you have to?" she whined.
"It's just for a little while."
"Fine."
Michael giggled at her and gave her a squeeze before joining me.
"Thank you. I thought I'd never get out of that conversation." he let out a relieved breath.
I snickered and intertwined our fingers.
"Did you noticed the new guests?" I questioned, nodding towards La Toya and Lisa.
"What are they doing here?"
"I was asking myself the same thing."
As we walked to them, we were interrupted by other guests saying 'congratulations' a few times.
"La Toya, I don't believe I invited you." Michael spat when we reached them.
"Oh, I just thought that as your sister I'm automatically invited." she gave us an innocent look.
"Well, you thought wrong."
The whole time, I was glaring at Lisa. I was so angry with her.
"And what are you doing here?" I said.
"Oh, I was invited by my boyfriend, who was invited by Michael." she smiled.
"Your boyfriend?" my husband gave his attention to her.
"Here, honey."
Nicolas Cage appeared next to Lisa and placed a drink in her hand.
"Michael, this is the Nicolas I told you about."
Michael seemed a bit shocked. I was, too.
Nicolas was a close friend of ours. We met him back in 1985. He even came to our first wedding.
"Hey, Mike," he held a hand for my husband to shake. "Congrats. It was a beautiful ceremony. Even better than the first one."
"Thank you." Michael muttered and shook his hand a bit.
"It was good to see you again. I wish you the best." Lisa faked a smile before leaving with Nicolas.
La Toya had a smirk on her face while Michael was still processing.
"Bet you didn't think it was that Nicolas, huh?"
"Oh, shut up, La Toya." I rolled my eyes.
"Get out of here." he said, a bit too loudly.
"Fine. I didn't even want to come, anyways."
"Bitch." I heard him mumble as she walked away.
I sighed, coming close to his face. "Hey, this is our night. We can ignore Lisa, right?"
"Yeah. Sorry about that."
I shook my head and kissed him deeply.
"Get a room!" Randy yelled.
I wanted to pull away, but Michael wouldn't let me.
~
