Chapter 26 - Curious/Just Like Old Times

14th of December, 1992
Brooklyn and Janet are 26, Michael is 34

Michael: "That was great, everyone! Take ten!" I yelled into the microphone.

The entire crew cheered and started scattering all over the stage.

I handed my microphone to someone who also handed me towel.

Wiping the sweat off of my forehead, I looked at Brooklyn. She was gathered with Siedah Garrett, Jennifer Batten, and Michelle Berube, having a talk with them.

"Hey, Mike!" Greg called, and waved for me to come over.

I could tell he and Dorian were up to something.

Greg leaned his arm on my shoulder.

"Tell me, Michael," he started, trying not to crack up. "Doesn't Brooke look a little bloated to you?"

"What are you saying?" I squinted my eyes at them.

"Did you knock her up again?" Dorian questioned.

"What? What made you think that?"

"Look at her hips, man. She gained some weight, for sure." Greg said, his eyes traveling to Brooke's body.

I hit the back of his head, "Don't check out my wife."

"I wasn't." he mumbled.

I rolled my eyes and took a look at my wife's body myself.

She does look a bit wavier, and her hips are bloated. Oh, God.

"Who knows, with all that sex you've been having lately. There are nights I can't sleep." Dorian smirked.

"Shut up."

~

Brooklyn: Tokyo was very busy at this time of the day, especially when you're married to Michael Jackson.

The girls from the crew and myself decided to go grab something for lunch. Well, I made them, really.

For the last few days I've been eating way too much, and I probably know why, too.

It was that time of the month for me. And mother nature picked the perfect month to tear my body up to pieces.

We sat down and quickly ordered something to eat.

"God, I'm starving." I said.

"Yeah, what's up with that? Girl, you've been eating a lot lately." Siedah raised her eyebrows.

Jennifer and Michelle exchanged playful looks.

"I can't hold it in anymore. Can I ask her?" Michelle begged.

"You always have to ruin it." Siedah murmured.

Michelle clapped her hands,"I'm taking that as a 'yes'. So, Brooke, this is something that's been going around the crew for about a week, and the guys already asked Michael, but... Are you pregnant?"

"You think I'm pregnant?" I asked, quite amused.

"Yeah, I mean, you've clearly gained weight, you're moody, you're hungry. And let's not neglect the fact that we hear you and Michael almost every other night in your suite. The hotel walls aren't that thick." Jennifer looked curious.

I started laughing.

They really think I'm pregnant.

"What's so funny?" Siedah frowned.

"All of you are paranoid. Jesus, can't a girl even be on her period?"

I couldn't stop laughing when they all looked ashamed they asked.

"Okay, we get it, it was funny. Can we move on now?" Jennifer mumbled.

"Y- yeah, sorry," I stopped my laughter, still very amused. "Why is everyone so curious about our private life?"

"It ain't so private if we can hear you fuck." I heard Siedah say under her breath.

"Well, I'm sorry for having fun with my husband." I told her and watched as a waiter put our food in front of us.

"Ignore her, she just needs to get laid." Michelle said, taking a bite the salad she ordered.

Siedah scoffed and crossed her arms over her chest.

"So... No baby?" Jennifer asked, a frown on her face.

"No, no baby," I answered. "We're focusing on us at the moment."

"We know. Like I said before, we hear you."

"Sid, shut up."

~

Michael: "How was it?" Brooke asked as I walked into our hotel room after the long day I've had.

First thing in the morning we had rehearsals, then I had three interviews, and now there's my favorite part of the day: the performance.

"As fun as interviews can be." I answered, looking at her.

She was curled up on the couch, a book in one hand, and a coffee cup in the other. She looked adorable.

Ask her. Do it. Who knows, maybe Greg and Dorian were right.

"What?"

I blinked, "Oh, nothing."

She raised her eyebrows.

"Okay, um, well, G- Greg and Dorian asked me today if yo- you might be, you know... Because you've been moody lately, and you gained weight..." I said nervously.

My wife threw a pillow my way, but missed.

"I'm on my period, you ass."

"Oh."

She patted the space next to her, a slight smile formed on her face. I gladly took a seat.

"The girls asked me about it, too. They are all up in our business all the time." Brooke sighed.

"I know. Don't they have their own lives to worry about?" I said and leaned my head on her shoulder.

Suddenly, I heard bickering from outside the room, which instantly made the both of our heads rise up.

"Do you hear that?"

I nodded.

We got up and walked over to the door.

"Shut up, Grego, they'll hear us!" Dorian whispered-yelled.

I rolled my eyes.

"The both of you just shut up already." Siedah mumbled.

I clutched the door handle, quickly opening it. The three of them fell onto the floor in front of Brooklyn and I with a big 'thud'.

"Aren't you supposed to be at the Dome already?" I questioned.

I was actually kind of pissed that they weren't where they should have been, if I was ignoring the fact that they just eavesdropped on us.

They all groaned as they stood up.

"Sorry, we'll go right now." Siedah said, pulling both of Greg's and Dorian's arms.

"No, wait, I wanna know. I didn't sacrifice my job for nothing." Dorian stopped her.

"You actually did, because I'm not pregnant. And all of you need to get a life." Brooke said.

There was a silence from their side as the both of us just stared at them angrily.

"We'll be going now." Greg broke it.

"Good."

~

Brooklyn: "You know how I feel, I won't stop until I hear your voice saying 'I do'..."

"I do."

I watched as Michael rubbed up and down Siedah's thigh, singing the song he wrote for me on the first day of our honeymoon.

I love watching him perform the song, and I knew he was thinking about me as he sang it. And right after he would finish singing 'She's Out of My Life', he would run up to me and kiss me fully on the lips. It was a habit we've grown into ever since the 'Bad' tour.

"Someone's looking jealous." I heard a too familiar voice say behind me.

Turning around, I saw Janet, Chris, Cynthia, Jason, my dad, and Katherine smiling at me.

"Oh, my God, what are you all doing here?!" I asked, attacking each one of them in a hug.

Janet laughed, "Surprising you and Mike."

"Yeah, and little Jason here wouldn't stop nagging about wanting to see you perform." Chris tickled his son.

"I missed you and uncwe Mike, auntie Bwooke." he smiled innocently.

I smiled back and ruffled his hair.

Michael soon finished to perform both 'I Just Can't Stop Loving You' and 'She's Out of My Life', and ran backstage.

He didn't even notice our family members as he grabbed my face to kiss me.

I felt his arm wrap around me to pull me closer to his sweating self.

"Ewwww! No, uncwe Mike, don't kiss her!"

My husband pulled away at the sound of Jason's voice. He looked at everyone, confused and surprised just like I was before.

"Well, this is a surprise," he smiled. "I would hug you, but I'm all sweaty."

"That didn't stop you from kissing my sister a few seconds ago." my brother rolled his eyes.

"Uncwe Mike, can I go on stage with you?" Jason asked excitedly.

"Oh, I would love to have you up there with me. If it's cool with your parents, you can hold my hand during 'Heal the World'." Michael answered.

"Yeah! Daddy, can I go?"

"Are you sure you wanna do it, Jase? There are a lot of people watching."

"Yes, I do! Pwease, daddy?"

My lips formed into a smile at my nephew's excitement.

"Your dad's just messing with you, of course you can go. As long as uncle Mike holds your hand." Cynthia told him.

"Thank you, mommy!" he kissed her cheek.

"Michael, where are you?!" Bush's voice sounded annoyed.

"Duty calls." Michael sighed before being pulled by his designer to change.

~

Janet: "Can I steal Brooke tonight?" I asked Michael as we drove back to the hotel we'll be staying at tonight.

"Why?"

"Because I wanna spend time with my best friend."

"Fine, take her." he said.

I didn't even know why I was asking him for permission to have a sleepover with my best friend. He has been with her for the last two months, and by what I've heard from his crew, they couldn't keep their hands off of each other.

Gross.

Yes, I was a bit jealous. Just a little. After all, she is my best friend, I have the right to be with her, too.

I kissed his cheek, "Thank you."

~

"Popcorn, a movie, and a shit ton of candy? This is just like when we were kids." Brooke beamed at what I had ordered for our little sleepover.

"I realized we don't get to spend time together, and I miss you too much. Plus, a girl talk never hurt anybody."

"This came out at perfect timing, too, because I need a break."

I smiled and hugged her tightly.

"Let's put the movie on!" I clapped my hands excitedly.

~

"I honestly don't know how my mother and your dad let us do this when we were little." I said, surrounded by candy.

We were halfway through the movie, and already finished almost everything.

"Me neither." Brooklyn laughed.

I nibbled on a pipe of Twizzlers, returning my eyes to the movie.

The hotel phone next to my best friend rang loudly.

"Don't." I told her, knowing it was Michael.

"But-"

"Don't."

She looked at me with pleading eyes.

"I don't even care anymore." I mumbled after a few moments, waving her off.

Brooke picked up the phone, "Mike?"

They talked for a minute or two, and she turned to me when she hung up.

"He's joining us."

"I fucking hate you." I said.

"He sounded so lonely, I couldn't say no. You used to love it when he joined us for a movie." she nudged my shoulder, in hopes I would forgive her for ruining our sleepover.

"Whatever." I crossed my arms.

Soon enough my brother knocked on the door.

"Uh oh, Dunk's annoyed." he joked.

I flipped him off.

Michael wrapped his arms around me, "I love you, and I would really appreciate it if you'd let me stay and spend the night with my two favorite girls. Don't you remember that I used to join you sometimes?"

"You know what?" I wiggled out of his embrace. "If you really wanna stay, I have one condition."

He smiled excitedly and nodded.

"Give me your wedding rings." I told the both of them, putting my hand out.

"What, why?" Brooklyn asked.

"Because, if we really want this to be like when we were young, there has to be no romantic relations between you two. That means forgetting you're married as well. Rings, please."

They sighed and handed me their rings.

I examined my best friend's diamond she got from my brother.

It will never stop to overwhelm me, I don't get how she carries it on her finger everyday without it falling off. And don't get me started on that neatly lined wedding ring of hers.

Michael's simple gold ring shone in the lights of the hotel room, and I quickly hurried to put them in my pajamas' shirt pocket.

"Thank you," I smiled at them. "Now, let's continue this movie, shall we?"

Michael: I popped another popcorn in my mouth, and chuckled at yet another joke Eddie Murphy told.

After the movie ended, we switched to 'Delirious', since we all wanted to have a laugh.

"Ooh, Mike, this is your part!" Janet said excitedly.

Eddie did the perfect impression of me singing, and then started fake crying.

"Tito get me some tissues." Brooke imitated him.

"Jermaine stop teasing." my little sister followed.

They cracked up and high-fived each other.

I pulled my knees to my chest and hid my face in them so they wouldn't see me blush.

"Stop laughing at me." I murmured.

"It's my job to laugh to you." Janet said.

Even though I knew my presence was disturbing Janet at the beginning, she has forgotten all about it.

I will never mind her and Brooklyn spending time together, and I have no right at all to keep them away from each other, I didn't even have those kind of intentions.

But trying to fall asleep without my wife by my side was hard, especially when I knew she was so close.

"Oh, God," Brooke yawned. "I think it's time I go to sleep."

The clock on the wall read 4:45 AM. And, fortunately for all of us, Frank scheduled nothing for the day ahead. There wasn't even a concert planned.

"Yeah, I think we should call it a night. I'm wiped." it was my turn to yawn.

Janet nodded and stretched, "Mike, you're sleeping on the floor, unless you want to go back to your room."

"Why can't I sleep on the bed?" I wined.

"Because we're taking the bed."

"Then I'll sleep at your feet, you're the shortest women I know."

Both of them rolled their eyes and we organized the bed for sleep.

~

I woke up from someone's weight on me, followed by hot lips that pressed onto mine.

"Good morning." Brooke whispered.

I rubbed my eyes, "What time is it?"

"Late."

"Where's Janet?" I asked, looking around the empty room.

"Everyone is taking a tour around the city. They said you need to get your sleep, so I decided to stay with you." she answered.

I nodded and closed my eyes. I felt like my entire back was paralyzed, it didn't matter how much I wanted to get up, I couldn't. It would hurt too much.

"Don't fall asleep again."

"I won't." I reassured.

I felt her head on my chest.

"My back is killing me," I admitted. "Could you get off, please?"

"Aww, my poor tensed Michael. Would you like a massage?" my wide offered.

"That would be perfect." I gladly accepted.

~

Brooklyn: "Mmhmm, keep going, babe." Michael mumbled as I pressed his soft skin.

"We kicked you, didn't we?" I asked.

I knew it wasn't a good idea that he'd sleep on the edge of the bed, but he was just so stubborn.

"A bit." he groaned.

I leaned on his bear back and put my mouth to his ear, "Never underestimate short ladies."

He chuckled and I kissed the spot under his ear, then lifted myself back up.

"How's that?" I said, pressing a certain spot on his upper back, near his shoulder.

"Great, thank you." he sighed in relief.

It was quiet for the next half hour, here and there I heard Michael moan whenever I touched another tensed muscle.

There were speaking noises from outside Janet's hotel room door, and it opened to reveal her peeking her head in.

"Am I interrupting anything?" she asked.

"Yes." Michael answered, his voice muffled.

"Uncwe Mike, auntie Bwooke!" Jason's scream caught us all off guard.

He barged the door open, "Look what mommy and daddy got me!"

He climbed on the bed, and held up an action figure of Spiderman, smiling widely.

"That's great, buddy." my husband smiled.

"I know, I wanted you to come, too! This store had every superhewo thewe is!"

My nephew started jumping excitedly, which made Michael grunt.

"No, Jase, don't do that. Uncle Mike's back hurts, don't move him too much." I said.

"Let's find your parents, Jason." Janet offered him her hand to take.

The both of them left the room quickly and I returned my attention to Michael.

"Remind me to thank her later." he told me.

"Oh, she gave us our rings back. I almost forgot to give you yours." I suddenly remembered that my best friend gave me our wedding rings before she left.

I reached out a hand to take Michael's gold ring from the bedside table and slid it onto his finger.

"Now, let's get you into a hot bath, it'll make you back loosen up even more." I gently started helping him up.

"What would I do without you?" my husband questioned.

I smiled at him and helped him onto his feet.

"Thank you." he said and kissed me.
