Chapter 12 - Husband & Wife

4th of July, 1986
Brooklyn and Janet are 20, Michael is 27

Brooklyn: It's the fourth of July, and everyone, except for Joseph, is at our house to celebrate. Michael and I decided to invite both of our families, since they're all stressed about the wedding that's so near.
Janet, La Toya, Rebbie, Cynthia, and I, were gathered in the living room, while everyone else was in the back yard, waiting for the fireworks to come.
Chris walked in, smiling at us, "You better come, it's starting soon."
We all waved him off. He rolled his eyes, and headed to the back yard.
"So, where's the dress?" Rebbie asked.
"It's safe and sound in my closet room." I answered.
My bridesmaids exchanged doubtful looks. "And Michael wasn't tempted to catch a glimpse?" Cynthia said.
I shook my head, "I don't think so. I mean, he's patient."
It was my turn to ask a question now, and it was a very important topic: where my fiancé is planning on taking me for our honeymoon.
"Do you," I said, pointing at my three soon-to-be sisters-in-law, "Know what he's planning for our honeymoon?"
"We have to know, we're his sisters. Plus, what kind of best friend am I, not to know such an important detail?" Janet smirked.
I squinted my eyes at her, even though all of them looked satisfied with her answer.
"Oh, come on, Brooke. Even I know," Cynthia teased. "Michael told Chris."
"Of course he did." I mumbled.
"Girls, come outside! The fireworks are starting!" Katherine called.
I sighed, a bit annoyed, and we all made our way outside to the back yard. Explosions were heard everywhere.
"Why the annoyed look?" I barely heard Michael's voice as he wrapped his arms around my waist.
"I have the right to know what you're planning for our honeymoon." I said.
He sighed, and put his chin on my shoulder. "But then it won't be a surprise, right?"
"I don't like surprises."
"That's a lie." Michael whispered and kissed my cheek.

Katherine: I entered the house later that night, feeling exhausted. Joseph was already in bed, reading a book.
"Did you have fun?" he asked, not taking his eyes off of the book in his hands.
"Yes, I did. You would've too, if you came." I mumbled, taking off my shoes.
He didn't say anything. Typical.
"They want you to come to the wedding, Joe. Michael especially. He might not show it, but he wants his father there."
"That girl isn't good for him, Katie. He's marrying so early in his carrier, do you know what that could do?" my husband said.
I sighed, and decided to ignore him. I was fed up with his attitude.
"The wedding's still here. You decide where you're going to be that day." I told him. With that, I left the room.

8th of July, 1986
Brooklyn and Janet are 20, Michael is 27

Michael: "Rise and shine, lovebirds!" I heard Chris's voice in my ear.
I groaned, and tightened my grip on Brooklyn's waist.
"You'll have time for that tonight, Mike. Come on, we need to be at your parents' in less than an hour."
I opened my eyes. Chris and Janet were standing next to our bed, waiting.
"We're up. Now, can you please leave?" Brooke asked.
My sister mumbled something as Chris led her out of the room.
"Thank God." I said, stretching. "Good morning, baby."
"Good morning, Michael." my fiancée smiled.
I kissed her deeply before standing up and going into the bathroom, to get ready for the day that finally came.

Brooklyn: As soon as Michael and Chris left the house, the girls started getting things ready for me, and at the same time, getting themselves ready.
"Yeah, I'll tell her. Okay, sure. Thanks, Linda." Janet said into the phone. "Linda is on her way here."
I nodded, and she pushed me back upstairs to take a shower.
When I was done, La Toya pulled me into hair and makeup.
Linda arrived a few minutes later, hugging me, and telling me how happy she was for Michael and I.
I sighed, and La Toya smiled at me through the mirror as she put another bobby pin in my hair.

Michael: I looked at myself in the mirror, examining my tuxedo.
The red shirt popped out underneath the black jacket, just like I wanted it.
I was tying my tie when there was a knock on the door. I sighed, thinking it was Chris, because he already knocked a few times to hurry me.
"I'll be done in a minute, Christopher!" I yelled.
"It's me, boy." Joseph's voice was loud and clear. I froze. We haven't talked for nearly two months.
I took a deep breath before slowly walking towards the door.
I hesitated before opening it. But, when I did, Joseph stood in front of me, playing with his fingers.
To my surprise, he was dressed in a tuxedo as well.
"I thought you weren't supposed to be here today," I snapped. "Joseph, I don't have time for another lecture right now. It's happening today, whether you like it or not."
"I'm not here to lecture you, Michael. I'm here for the wedding."
I raised my eyebrows, "What made you change your mind?"
"Your mother." he mumbled. I smiled. Of course mother had something to do with this.
"Fine." I said.
I heard footsteps coming up the stairs, and Chris appeared.
He looked doubtful for a minute when he saw Joseph, but quickly recovered.
"Fix that tie, Mike."
I rolled my eyes, and returned to the mirror.

Downstairs, everything was going well. Chairs were being placed, and balloons were being steadied. My parents' back yard never looked more hectic.
I sighed, going into the kitchen, in hopes of finding my mother. Her face lit up when she saw me.
"Oh, Michael. Look at you." she said. A tear rolled down her cheek.
I embraced her in a hug, and she held onto me tightly.
"Mother, you'll need to save some tears for later." I joked. My mother laughed into my shoulder, and pulled away to dry her tears.
"I just talked to your sister," she smiled, "It's a mad house over there."
I shook my head, "Did you know Joseph decided to come?"
She didn't look surprised. "Really?"
I nodded. I'm glad he decided to come, but it won't solve everything. He knows that very well.
"Hey, Mike!" I heard Marlon call, "I think Paul's here!"
"Excuse me, mother." I told her, leaving the kitchen. I passed the living room, and opened the front door.
Paul stepped out of a black car, thanking the driver.
He walked towards me with a big smile spread across his face.
"I'll be surprised if Brooklyn will be able keep her hands off of you." Paul whispered in my ear as we hugged.
I chuckled in response, "Thank you."
"Am I the first guest?" he asked.
"Well, considering you are one of my groomsmen, you're early." I answered, leading him inside the house.
As soon as we were inside, mother greeted Paul in a hug, welcoming him.

It's been a few hours, and almost everyone was here. Almost. The girls were on their way.
As I greeted Barry Gibb, and thanked him for coming, I was called into the house by Chris.
I sighed, excusing myself.
Joshua, and my five groomsmen, Jermaine, Randy, Marlon, Chris, and Paul were waiting for me in the living room.
"The girls' car just parked outside. Get ready." my future brother-in-law said. He reached his hand to fix my tie, and winked at me.
I rolled my eyes at his action. Joshua patted my shoulder before embracing me in a hug.
"Go get her, Mikey." Marlon smiled. All three of my brothers hugged me tightly.
Paul was last, "Good luck."
We made our way to the front door, and waited. It opened a few moments later, revealing Janet in her red dress. She was smiling widely at all of us.
My heart beat faster with every second. This is really it.
When all of Brooke's bridesmaids took their place next to their assigned man, my future wife finally came into view.
She was so breath taking. My smile got bigger, and so did hers.
I slowly made my way over to her. Brooklyn wrapped her arms around my neck, which automatically made me lift her up and spin her around.
"You're so beautiful." I whispered into her ear. She buried her face in my neck, mumbling the same to me.

~

Brooklyn: "With the power invested in me by the state of California, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Michael, you may kiss your bride." the Justice of Peace finally declared.
Michael put his large hand on the back of my neck, and pulled me into a deep kiss.
Cameras snapped here and there. All the guests were clapping, and Michael's brothers were cheering. My cheeks started burning.
We pulled away, and my husband's cheeks were flushed in red as well.
I looked at Katherine, whose eyes were full of happy tears. I walked over to her and hugged her tightly.
"I'm so proud of you, both. I can't believe it finally happened."
I nodded, and saw Joseph in the corner of my eye. He was talking to Jermaine, with a little smirk on his face, like always.
"Go talk to him, dear." Katherine smiled softly. I slowly made my way to my father-in-law.
Jermaine saw me, telling Joseph he wants to talk to Michael. As he passed me, he whispered "Good luck" and squeezed my shoulder.
"Congratulations, Brooklyn." Joseph said.
"Thank you." I murmured, playing with the rings I had on my finger. "And thank you for coming."
"My pleasure."
He lifted his eyes, and met Michael's unsure ones.
"I was wondering where you went." Michael told me. I kissed his cheek lightly, and he took my hand in his.
"Once again, congrats, both of you." Joseph smiled lightly before disappearing into the crowd of guests.
