The Pop-Tart Run

Sydney

I woke up to extreme darkness.

I sat up in a panic, bad memories flooding my mind. Images of dark cars, bags, and a single dim light bulb swam before my eyes.

Then, the constant beep of my digital alarm clock forced its way into my consciousness, reminding me that I was still safe from that. I wormed my way out of my twisted covers. I dashed over to the light switch. I flicked it up and my room was flooded with light. Wonderful, wonderful, light. I trudged back to my bed, and then attempted to make it. It basically ended up as a very wrinkled blanket, hastily spread over my empty bed. "Oh cheesecakes." I mumbled to myself. I grabbed my pillow and my teddy bear off the floor, and shoved them under the covers. But on a second thought, I gingerly picked up my teddy bear. It was a gift from my grandma. She gave it to me when I was a week old, and exactly 24 hours before she died of a stroke.

I gave my teddy a quick hug before stashing it back under my covers. I then walked over to my closet. Not very quickly, might I add. I slid the door open, and grabbed the shirt on the hanger closest to me. It ended up being a blue T-shirt, with the words 'Love is the Key' on the front, right above a picture of a heart-shaped keyhole. Without a further thought, I shoved it back into my closet. I wouldn't be caught dead in that cheesy shirt. My parents had gotten it for me at who knows where. I decided that I actually wanted to look at my options.

I settled on a pink-and-blue swirled short sleeved shirt. I grabbed a pair of jeans. The next two minutes were spent as I ungracefully hopped around the room pulling on my pants. When I was satisfied, I walked out of my room and down the hall, flicking the light switch over-dramatically as I strolled out of my room.

At the last door on my right, I entered, hurriedly turning on the light. My feet curled at the chill of the tiled floor. I went over to the sink, snatching the brush on the counter next to it. My black hair was basically a rats nest now.  I dragged the blue brush all the way to the middle of my back. I was barely able to brush it to the ends without finding a new angle. Some people said that it went wonderfully with my Caucasian skin. I wasn't sure that I agreed with them. I wasn't even sure if I disagreed with them. I thought I looked pretty average.

"Except for my eyes. It's always  my eyes." I mumbled.

You see, my eyes were bright purple. My parents said that they looked wonderful on me. But they were parents, they always had to say that stuff. But the kids from 6 years ago begged to differ.

I carefully grabbed my colored contacts case. I popped them in, and looked at the mirror. My eyes were now a middle-brown. Due to how dark my eyes actually were, I had to use light brown contacts. By some miracle, they made my eyes look normal.

After I brushed my teeth, I glanced at the clock. "Cheesecakes, I'm going to miss the bus!" I exclaimed. I darted out of the bathroom. I tore the kitchen apart, until I finally found the last pop tart I had stashed in the silverware drawer. If I hadn't hidden it, my mom would have torn it from my grasp and eaten it faster than you can say 'My beloved child'. I dashed outside, desperate to catch the bus, and ended up waiting for five minutes. Because this was the one day the bus driver decided to be late.

How's that? Do you guys like it? Is there anything that you want me to change? Like maybe her features? I won't take any eye color suggestions though. Please comment!
