Chapter 14
Okay, so my plan wasn't a brilliant one, but hey, on the bright side we don't have to walk all the way to Ohio.
I watch Jack cringe back in the car seat as I sped pass a semi on the highway.
"M-mark..." Jack says, clutching the door handle tightly. "Can you please slow down a little bit?"
"Jack, this is the interstate. There is no such thing as slow long down."
"Well it would do me a little good if you dropped your speed from 100 to about 75.... That way we don't get pulled over!"
"Jack," I sigh, weaving carefully through slow people. "We need to get to Ohio fast. Don't know whether everyone is okay or not."
"Please Mark? It's already bad enough you stole a vehicle... twice. Least you can do is get us there in one piece." I sigh, annoyed with his perspective of "play it safe."
"Whatever," I mutter, letting my foot up off of the gas pedal a little, dropping my speed to about 80 mph. Jack relaxes a little bit, playing with something around his neck.
"You still have it?" Anti's voice causes us all to jump.
" Have what?" Vinny asks, turning slightly from the passenger seat.
"A piece of my soul I gave him a while back. I can't believe you still have it."
"Of course!" Jack exclaims as if he is offended by Anti's statement. "Why wouldn't I?" Anti shrugs.
"I dunno. I thought maybe you would've thrown it away... It is useless after all."
"No...," Jack says trailing off a bit. "I have my reasons for keeping it."
++++
After about four hours of driving, everyone got really quiet. Jack and Vinny were sleeping, Anti was staring off into space and Felix.... Well knowing Felix he was probably scrolling through Twitter.
The cars in front of me started to slow down drastically. I stepped on the brakes as the person swerves in front of me in attempt to avoid something.
"What the fuck?" I whisper, cautiously moving forward. The little car creeps forward a little bit only to be stopped by a police officer.
He signals me to roll down the window. I comply, as everyone else in the vehicle tries to piece together exactly what was going on.
"Good evening to you sir," the officer says cheerfully. I swallow hard.
"Uh... Yes. Good evening to you too."
"I'm sorry for the inconvenience," he says. The officer's right eye twitches skeptically.
Mark, be careful. I don't like the looks of this guy. Dark says. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Anti tense up in the review. The two demons knew something was up and it probably had something to do with this dude too. Whatever was going on, I decide to play along calmly.
"It's no problem, officer. What seems to be the hold up?"
"I'm sorry for the inconvenience," he repeats again. His right eye twitching a little faster.
"Mark," Anti whispers from behind me. I blink in response. "On the count of three, and for the love of god you better trust me on this. If you don't, everyone will die. Either Dark or I will explain later." I nod, clicking my seatbelt off, everyone else did the same thing.
"One." I scoot a little bit towards Vinny's side of the car, that way I can just jump out the passenger side door. Jack and Anti do the same thing only with Felix.
"Two." I watch the officer's eyes light up a bright red. My heart pounding in my chest while I was confused as hell. The only thing I could do right now was trust Anti's judgement and pray it is right.
"Three!" He screams. Everyone launches out the passenger side of the car, rolling across the pavement as the vehicle we were just in, bursts into flames. Everyone groans as Anti and Vinny, who realizes what was going on, stands straight up.
"Come on!" Vinny screams. "We need to get going!" The thing that was suppose to be a police officer flips over the burning vehicle, sending it flying over our heads and a couple of other vehicles. I stare as the eyes of the thing light up red again.
"Come on!" Anti yells. "We need to move and fast! If it catches a hold of you, you're dead!" As it started towards all of us, we scramble to our feet and do what we do best- we run for our freaking lives.
